In general, the literary genre ofthe novel is connected with the crisis of the mythological consciousnessand the dying process of the “epic protagonists” but it is not so juvenile.From this point of view, fundamental is Korneli Kekelidze’s view whosees the source of the novelistic elements in the ancient prose. Moreover,the spiritual prose – the ancient texts of the martyrdom cycle and thecourse of life – contain the elements of the biographical novel, where thehistorical events are exposed on the background of the life and the worldview of a protagonist. The abundance of biographical novels in themartyrological labour of Rostom Chkheidze is not incidental. His prose,imprinted by intellectualism and high professionalism, counts elevenbiographical novels among his thirty monographic works. R. Chkheidze’seleven biographical novels with their inherent individual, their originalnarrative style, occurrences and characters have their own definiteobjective – to accumulate the history of the Georgian morality andconscience and to formulate them to the nation as an eternal instruction.Each epoch has its own heroes and that is the universal truth but R.Chkheidze’s achievement in the promotion of the biographical novel cansurely be counted among the heroic deeds. By unveiling the biographies ofthe knights of the Georgian morality and conscience – AlexandreOrbeliani, and others he inspires, invigorates the country, fortifies its rootsand sustains its belief in the future. His biographical novel about KakutsaCholokashvili: “The Black Tunic” aims at sobering the country andawakening the nation’s responsibility. This novel is about the fear defeatedby the will, about a person whose sense of duty crushes the claws offortune and whose spirit triamphanty subdues the body. It is a novel whichR. Chkheidze dedicated to the legendary name of K. Cholokashvili.159
