NANA ARAKHAMIAARTIST’S INTENTION AS THE CATEGORYOF BELLES-LETTRES’ FORMMultifarious and noteworthy opinions have been expressed in thescientific literature on the problems concerning the literary and folkloreand sources of the poem “The Hermit” by Ilia Chavchavadze. It is quitenatural not to be able to embrace all of them in one article. However, thepresent work is only an attempt at clarifying the existing point of viewon the folklore sources of the poem in the Georgian literary studies and atverifying more or less their trustworthiness. With this in view the givenwork surveys the works of V. Itonishvili, P. Ingorokva, M. Janashvili, M.Chikovani, S. Makalatia, Sh. Radiani, T. Jvaridze. N. Makhatadze, V. Sidamonidze,L. Minashvili and others. In our opinion, the folk legend forIlya is his perception of one of the means of manifestation of a naturecreative thought (containing the significance of a poetic impulse) and notnecessarily the source for creation of the poem.132
