Some people, in fact,think that there are too many magazines and that they are tooexpensive: the national magazine “Rotary”, the district bullettin,the local magazines edited by several clubs. Some othersthink that the magazine is outmoded and expensive and thatit is time to switch from printed paper to multimedia diffusion.But most of all, there are people who do not read any of thesecommunications media because of “lack of time” or because“they always tell the same things”.Dear friends, if you really want to know what good Rotarydoes around the world, if you want to make a difference inquality and appreciate the spirit of internationality, then makethe best use of all Rotary’s information media, visit the R.I.website and the district website as well. Read our magazinesand the news, partecipate to the district meetings and to theinternational meetings as the Lisbon convention.You will experience a totally different atmosphere than theone you do normally live in your local club. If you feel thatyour club activities are good enough for you, then let me tellyou that you are missing the best part of Rotary. In order toenjoy the social life of your own town any local associationcould do, but as you are members of an international club, tryto make the best out of the opportunities which will surely elevateyou in terms of knowledges and human relationships andlinks that you will be able to build.Most of all the presidents of clubs will have the opportunityto get, from the magazine and the website, ideas for their activities,sparks for their speechs, news on how the Rotary ischanging and on the status of international projects as scholarshipsand the fight against polio. Have you read, for example,the article in the last number of “Rotary” on how tointroduce to the public our campaign against the polio? Orthe piece on how to organize fundraising events?I remember reading, in an old number of the magazine, a listof the contemporary artists who had been affected by polio duringtheir childhood: the composers Joni Mitchell and NeilYoung, the violinist Itzhak Perlman, the saxophonists DavidSanborn and Cokney Rebel, the singers Steve Harley and IanDury, the pop singer Donovan and many others music idols.Besides the personal stories described in the article, it was thetitle that most caught my attention: “the survivors of polio”.This and much more can be found on our magazine and website.I hope this will convince you not to file the parcel withouteven removing it from its package, to dedicate some minuteof your time to leaf through the magazine and the bulletin enclosedto this number, to read the article that most catch yourattention in order to give a sense to the costs we face by printingout this magazine.I prossimi appuntamentiAssemblea distrettuale: 17-19 maggio a Campofelice di Roccella al Fiesta hotel GardenBeach: è il debutto ufficiale del governatore incoming e delle sua squadra.Congresso distrettuale: 31 maggio-2 giugno a Palermo; conclude di fatto l’anno rotariano2012-2013 anche se l’avvicendamento ufficiale avverrà l’1 luglio.Convention Rotary International: 21-27 giugno a Lisbona.Manifestazione interdistrettuale: 27-29 settembre a Venezia (teatro La Fenice: La Traviata).Rotary Foundation Day: 24 ottobre a Palermo, Teatro PoliteamaArea NissenaCome rafforzare l’effettivoUn Forum sul tema dell'effettivo ha riunito nel teatro comunale di Serradifalco i Rotary clubdell'area nissena (Caltanissetta, Gela, Niscemi, San Cataldo, Valle del Salso) con l'intervento delgovernatore distrettuale Gaetano Lo Cicero e del governatore incoming Maurizio Triscari. Larelazione è stata tenuta dal delegato d'area Aldo Tullio Scifo, che si è soffermato in particolaresulla spinosa questione delle dimissioni, sulle loro cause, su cosa fare per evitarle. "Non v'è dubbio- ha detto tra l'altro Scifo - che una prima causa è da addebitare alla frettolosa ricerca dinuovi soci suggeritaci alcuni anni fa dai nostri vertici rotariani di Evanston; non può essere sottaciutoche la precedente quantità di nuovi soci non è stata sempre di pari qualità, per cui trannequalche caso sporadico l'effetto è stata una costante emorragia di dimissioni. Altra causa è daattribuire alla mancata capacità di alcuni presidenti di coinvolgere i nuovi soci a una partecipazionepiù diretta alle attività del club, non rendendoli compartecipi ai programmi del club, nonaffidando loro un incarico specifico sia in seno alle commissioni sia nella gestione del clubstesso". E' necessario che siano eletti presidenti di alto profilo, che vengano cooptati soci di qualità,e che i club svolgano un'adeguata attività di formazione e di coinvolgimento dei soci anchenelle iniziative distrettuali.
