He and hiswife Orsolina had travelled all over Europe and loved beauty and charme. After their return to Italythey planned to create something which could express, in the middle of one of the most beautiful lakesin the world, class and elegance. They decided to build a Grand Hotel, suitable for the top-qualityinternational tourism of that time. It was a rich and cultured tourism coming from England, Germany,France and Austria, from Belgium and Switzerland, even from tsars' Russia. They chose this extraordinarylocation, bordering with the park of Villa Carlotta, because, from the natural terraces ofthe ground, you can admire an incomparable scenery: simply the most beautiful view on Lake Como.In July 1910 they inaugurated the Grand Hotel Tremezzo. It followed a period of great splendour tillthe beginning of the First World War, which changed the world. For more than a year the Grand Hotelwas requisitioned and used as a clinic for the army. Then peace came back and it began the rebirth.In the meantime the tourism had changed: the romantic tour, with cultural and sentimental goals,was replaced by the pleasure trip and the relaxing holiday stay. In the middle of 20th century theGrand Hotel was bought by the Sampietro family, that remained owner till 1975. The outbreak of theSecond World War brought with it the collapse of the international tourism but the Hotel never closeddown, even in those hard years, which have been followed once again by a period of splendourand revival. Today, after exactly one hundred years, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo is one of the oldestluxury Hotels on Lake Como, and it is proud to celebrate a century of charme and authentic Italianhospitality.
