INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORSThe publication is free of charge.Authors’ responsibilitiesManuscripts are accepted with the understan<strong>di</strong>ng that they havenot been published or submitted for publication in any otherjournal.It is however <strong>per</strong>mitted that preliminary or partial results bealready published elsewhere. Prior abstract presentation shouldbe described in a footnote to the title.Authors must submit the results of clinical and ex<strong>per</strong>imental stu<strong>di</strong>esconducted accor<strong>di</strong>ng to the Helsinki Declaration on clinicalresearch and to the Ethical Code on animal research set forth byWHO (WHO Chronicle 1985; 39:51).The Authors must obtain <strong>per</strong>mission to reproduce figures, tablesand text from previously published material.Written <strong>per</strong>mission must be obtained from the original copyrightholder (generally the Publisher).Manuscript presentationAuthors must submit the text on floppy <strong>di</strong>sk (MAC andWINDOWS Microsoft Word are accepted) with two copies of themanuscript and two sets of illustrations. Manuscripts must bewritten in English language in accordance with the “UniformRequirements for Manuscripts submitted to biome<strong>di</strong>cal journals” definedby The International Committees of Me<strong>di</strong>cal Journal E<strong>di</strong>tors(Ann Intern Med 1988; 258). Manuscripts in Italian languagecan be published if translated (expense for translation willbe charged to the Authors). As a general rule, manuscripts an<strong>di</strong>llustrations are not returned, whether published or not.Manuscripts should be typed double spaced with wide margins.They must be sub<strong>di</strong>vided into the following sections:Title pageIt must contain:a) title;b) a short (no more than 40 characters) running head title;c) first, middle and last name of each Author without abbreviations;d) University or Hospital, and Department of each Author;e) last name and address of the correspon<strong>di</strong>ng Author;d) e-mail and/or fax number to facilitate communication;f) acknowledgement of financial support;g) list of abbreviations.SummaryThe Authors must submit a long English summary (300 words,2000 characters).Subhea<strong>di</strong>ngs are needed as follows:Objective(s), Material and method(s),Result(s), Conclusion(s).After the summary, three to ten key words must appear, takenfrom the standard Index Me<strong>di</strong>cus terminology.TextFor original articles concerning ex<strong>per</strong>imental or clinical stud-iesand case reviews, the following standard scheme must be followed:Introduction - Material and methods - Results - Discussion- Conclusions - Summary - References - Tables - Legends -Figures.Size of manuscriptsLiterature reviews, E<strong>di</strong>torials and Original articles concerningex<strong>per</strong>imental or clinical stu<strong>di</strong>es should not exceed 20 typewrittenpages inclu<strong>di</strong>ng figures, tables, and reference list. Casereports and notes on surgical technique shouid not exceed 10type written pages (references are to be limited to 12). Letters tothe e<strong>di</strong>tors should be not longer than 1000 words.ReferencesThe Author is responsible for the accuracy of the references.References must be sorted in order of quotation and numberedwith arabic <strong>di</strong>gits between parentheses. Only the references quote<strong>di</strong>n the text can be listed. Journal titles must be abbreviated asin the Index Me<strong>di</strong>cus. Only stu<strong>di</strong>es published on easily retrievedsources can be quoted. Unpublished stu<strong>di</strong>es cannot be quoted,however articles “in press” can be listed with the pro<strong>per</strong> in<strong>di</strong>cationof the journal title, year and possibly volume. Referencesmust be listed as follows:Journal articlesAll Authors if there are six or fewer, otherwise the first three, followedby “et al.”. Complete names for Work Groups orCommittees. London:Academic Press Inc., 1964; 115TablesTables must be clearly printed and aimed to make comprehensionof the written text easier. They must be numbered in Arabic<strong>di</strong>gits and referred to in the text by progressive numbers. Everytable must be typed on a separate sheet and accompanied by abrief title. The meaning of any abbreviations must be explainedat the bottom of the table itself.Figures(graphics, algorithms, photographs, drawings)Figures must be submitted in duplicate as well, they must benumbered and quoted in the text by number. On the back sideof each figure the following data must appear: figure number;title of the pa<strong>per</strong>, name of the first Author, an arrow pointing tothe top of the figure.Figure legendsFigure legends must all be collected in one or more separatepages. The meaning of all symbols, abbreviations or letters mustbe in<strong>di</strong>cated. Histology photograph legends must include theenlargement ratio and the staining method.Manuscript reviewOnly manuscript written accor<strong>di</strong>ng to the above mentioned ruleswill be considered. All submitted manuscripts are evaluated bythe E<strong>di</strong>torial Board and/or by two referees designat-ed by theE<strong>di</strong>tors. The Authors are informed in a time as short as possibleon whether the pa<strong>per</strong> has been accepted, rejected or if a revisionis deemed necessary. The E<strong>di</strong>tors reserve the right to make e<strong>di</strong>torialand literary corrections with the goal of making the articleclearer or more concise, without altering its contents. Submissionof a manuscript implies acceptation of all above rules.ProofsAuthors are responsible for ensuring that all manuscripts areaccurately typed before final submission. Galley proofs will besent to the first Author. Proofs should be returned within sevendays from receipt.ReprintsA copy of the issue in which the article appears will be providedfree of charge. Reprints are not provided.The cost to obtain the PDF file of the article (on a 3.5-inch<strong>di</strong>sk) is Euro 50.
