Residents First and Public Reporting Initiatives
Residents First is a quality initiative that is provincial in scope. The initiative is being
implemented in partnership with Ontario’s Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs), the
Ontario Health Quality Council (OHQC), and sector associations such as OANHSS,
OLTCA, Ontario Association of Residents’ Councils and the Ontario Family Council
Program, all of whom strive for quality care for residents living within long term care. It
is being implemented over a five year period, beginning in 2010, within four regions of
the province: Central East, Hamilton Niagara Haldiman Brant, Mississauga Halton and
North West. The initiative is also being extended to homes such as Villa Leonardo
Gambin that participated in an existing collaborative with the MOHLTC and Ontario
Health Quality Council, (the Pressure Ulcer Awareness Program [PUAP]).
The expected outcomes for the initiative are:
• Improved resident experiences and staff satisfaction
• Reduced Emergency Department Transfers
• Reduced adverse events and improved clinical outcomes
• Elimination of waste and improved efficiency
• Facilitation of the ability of staff to “take back” time that they can then spend providing more direct care to residents
Villa Leonardo Gambin has volunteered to partner in the Resident First program and has chosen to focus on
the pressure ulcer prevention program to sustain best practice that has been implemented through our first
year of the Pressure Ulcer Awareness Initiative. The home is striving to ensure our residents are monitored and
receive timely interventions to reduce their risk of developing pressure ulcers.
Through the Residents’ First initiative, training is provided to the leaders within the home to help them build
on proven and recognized leadership skills. The enhancement of these skills will help ensure quality practices
within the home, will increase staff familiarity with performance measurement tools that can be used to evaluate
improve and report on processes used within the home, ensure enhanced accountability, as well as enhancing
both leadership and resident and family commitment to quality care.
The home has also volunteered to be part of another program imitative, Public Reporting, sponsored by the
Ontario Health Quality Council. Currently seventy homes across the province are involved in this program. The
public website provides information on key areas where long term care homes are measuring quality. The main
purpose of this site is to encourage residents, families and staff in the homes to discuss information together
and work cooperatively on ideas to improve quality. There are currently four indicators being tracked including:
falls; pressure ulcers; and worsening bladder function. We are very pleased with results which currently demonstrate
that we are above the provincial average in all areas. For more information please visit the website as
suggestivo incontro.
Domenica 14 febbraio tutti i villottesi
e simpatizzanti, si sono recati presso
la Chiesa San Fidelis per ascoltare una
Santa Messa celebrata dal parroco Fr.
Mose’ Gasperini coadiuvato da Fr.
Vitaliano Papais.

World Cup 2010 At The Famee Furlane
It’s that time of the decade once again when soccer becomes the focal point of
everyone’s interest in the GTA. The tradition started in 1982 when Italy beat
Argentina, Brazil and Germany on its way to its 3rd World Cup Title and Toronto
saw a celebration that even the Leaf’s Nation would envy with 200,000 jubilant
‘tifosi’ on the streets of Little Italy.
It was close in 1994 when Italy lost to Brazil in the final in Los Angeles in overtime
penalty kicks. But that was made up by the tremendous overtime penalty kick
overtime win 4 years ago in Germany as Italy beat France in the Final. Can Italy do
Friuli Centre Toronto Volunteers Recognized
The week of April 18th was Volunteer Week in Canada. It is a time for organizations and
groups around the country to recognize the work done by volunteers throughout the
year. Statistics Canada has calculated that if volunteer work were recognized as paid
labour, it would be the largest grossing industry in the country.
The Friuli Centre Toronto Campus hosts a volunteer dinner every year during National
Volunteer Week to honour the dedicated people and their spouses who give up their
valuable family time to help with activities and events associated with the Famee Furlane
Toronto, the Villa Leonardo Gambin Charity and residence and the Friuli Terrace and its
Adult Day Programme. This year in excess of one hundred individuals were recipients of
the Friuli Centre Toronto 2010 Volunteer Recognition certificates. A heartfelt “Thank
You” to all who have volunteered their time and effort this past year…lets do it again.
A “Grazie” is also directed towards Mary Lovisa for organizing the celebration.
Furlan nominated for an Oscar
Anastasia Masaro was nominated
for best Art Direction at the
Oscars this past February for the
movie “The Imaginarium of
Doctor Parnassus”. Anastasia is
the daughter of Ermes and Rosa
Masaro. Ermes Masaro was
involved with the Executive of the
Famee Furlane from 1966 to
1973 in the years before the club
was built at it’s present location.
Anastasia, along with her co-art director Dave Warren, was
up against a very formidable nominee from the movie
Avatar, the biggest grossing movie of all time which ended
up winning the award. Anastasia received the phone call
about the nomination from her publicist and she said after
that “There was screaming, and then the phone calls and
the e-mails started. I will be screaming for the rest of the
day!!”
Congratulations to Anastasia and her parents Ermes and
Rosa Masaro from the membership at the Famee Furlane
of Toronto.
Theme Nights Return to the al Fogolâr Restaurant
After a short sabbatical, theme nights at the al Fogolar Restaurant made a much
anticipated return this past April 30th. Being somewhat more bold and adventurous
than past offerings, the restaurant has developed a theme night series based on the
four seasons of the year. This has provided Chef Boris Rubstov and Chef Dylan
Caswell, al Fogolar chefs for the past five years, a unique stage that highlights
ingredients that are “in season” and also emphasises culinary styles and influences
from around the globe and not just from the cradle of gastronomic excellence, Italia.
The “Spring Awakening” prix fixe four course dinner ($55, taxes, beverages and gratuities
excluded) offered patrons the following: starter, Spring Rolls Two Ways [duck confit
with spicy mango sauce and spring vegetables and noodles in a peanut hoisin sauce];
first course, Calzones of Lobster [in a sweet pea emulsion served with a pea shoot
salad]; main, Rolled Loin of Spring Lamb [with caramelized garlic and herbs in a sweet
mint jelly, grilled asparagus and spring onion croquette]; and dessert, Strawberry
Panna Cotta [with berries and caramel sauce with a homemade cookie].
Specifically selected wines that guests could choose to accompany their meal included:
Chianti Rufina Basciano DSOG, 2007, Toscana, Italy; Valpolicella Superiore “Ripassa”
DOC, Zenato, 2007, Veneto, Italy; Merlot D.O.C., Le Due Torri, 2006, Friuli Venezia
Giulia, Italy; Cabernet Sauvignon, Bianchi, 2005, Paso Robles, California; Gavi di Gavi,
Volpi, 2008, Piemonte, Italy; Pinot Griogio D.O.C. Il Colle, 2008, Veneto, Italy;
Chardonnay D.O.C., Le Due Torri, 2008, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy; and Prosecco
Mionetto Valdobbiane, Veneto, Italy.
CELEBRAZION DAL 3 DI AVRÎL
E TRIGEMINUS CUL SPETTACUL TEATRAL
Maura and Bruno perform their skits called “Muri di Ridi”.
they are still able to gain enjoyment from the group
activities and interactions.
Some of the program activities include exercise, arts
and crafts, music activities, games, discussion groups
and religious functions.
VILLA LEONARDO GAMBIN RESIDENCE
Resident Ambassador Program
The Villa Leonardo Gambin Charity’s residence is currently implementing a
Resident Ambassador Program, as developed in conjunction with our colleagues
at Specialty Care. The Villa Leonardo Gambin residence’s mission is to partner
with residents, staff, families and the broader community by creating communities
of caring through our core values.
The goal of the Resident Ambassador Program is to provide residents with
opportunity for personal growth, self determination and informed decision making.
The Program will acknowledge the resident’s involvement in meaningful activity
and will be defined as a resident who is proudly affiliated to a cause. The
Program will identify areas in which a Resident Ambassador is needed; and will
Sausage Making
On Sunday March 14th residents, volunteers and staff
had a hand in making Villa Leonardo Gambin sausages.
This annual undertaking was a way of remembering and
reengaging in an activity that our seniors once did in
their younger years and was a great success. We would
like to thank all the volunteers, staff and especially Mr.
Nardi for their hard work. A special “grazie” to Albert
Iaboni for entertaining the residents!
Good Friday Procession
The residents, families, volunteers and staff took
part in an annual tradition at the residence with the
re-enactment of the passion of Jesus Christ
through reflection, reading, and acting out the last
moments before His crucifixion. Many thanks to
the various volunteers and residents who organized
this celebration.
be outlined by role descriptions and job functions, such as; pick up and deliver
newspapers to the residence floors, resident who runs the Bar, makes espresso
and cappuccino in the evenings, Tuck Shop assistance, resident who porters
others to and from programs and out of the Dining Rooms, resident who waters
the plants on their home area, resident who is responsible for caring for the
birds in the lobby, table setting and watering plants.
It is anticipated that this program will help residents in better adapting to life in
a long term care residence and provide them with the opportunity to contribute
to their home and improve their quality of life.
Mother's Day
Our female residents were honoured
on Sunday May 9th in celebration
of Mother's Day. Lino Gallotta, who’s
mother is a resident, serenaded all
the mothers who make Villa
Leonardo Gambin as their home as
well as those visiting their mothers
on this very special day of the year.
Friuli Terrace at Villa
Leonardo Gambin
The tenants at Friuli Terrace made a
