nel 2007 dall’iraniana Marjane Satrapi e candidato all’Oscar, tratto
dall’omonima grafic novel autobiografica d’esordio dell’Autrice ”Persepolis.
indipendenti.
I suoi autori
Giovanna Grossato
Editorial “The only art that is a child of our times?”
have a dream”, a Vasco Rossi song from a few years ago (recalling
“I the beginning of Martin Luther King’s famous speech), was later
transformed into a graphic novel with the same name, published last
spring. Its publication further increased the already growing exposure
of this literary genre to the rock-pop public. The graphic novel is almost
half a century old but has only recently begun to enjoy widespread
popularity in Italy and has been called the “adult age of the comic” and
the “only art that is a child of our times”. It certainly belongs to art and
has its own precise identity and there should be no equivocation about
it, especially now that all the culture supplements of the dailies include
top ten ratings and countless titles were published in Italy in 2011. But
are these books just comics (mainly serial strips published in the papers
and/or periodicals) or are they novels in which the graphics really provide
a tool that is absolutely organically linked to the text?
An aid in marking the difference, which is fundamental, comes by retaining
the English term, graphic novel, (or GN for the authors/dedicated
readers), all the more so since the origin is American. In any case they
are books aimed at the bookshop market and at an adult public, complete
works with their own complete narrative unity.
One of the first examples in Italy to gain a certain prominence in the
media resulted from the Oscar-nominated cartoon film, “Persepolis”,
made in 2007 by the Iranian director, Marjane Satrapi, and based
on the author’s autobiographical graphic novel, “Persepolis. Histoire
d’une femme insoumise”. Written in French, it tells the story of a girl in
Iran just before the revolution with a taut narrative rhythm and a graphic
style which follows the drama of the tale.
Early examples of graphic novels include “A contract with God” by Will
Eisner (1978) and “Maus” by Art Spiegelman (1986) which marked the
rupture with traditional comics. The world is that of the underground culture
in the United States when young authors who could not find outlets
in mainstream publishing, published themselves in small independent
publications. The post-war American super heroes and the Japanese
manga are therefore the progenitors of the graphic novel, a mix of the
comic, art, design and literature but with a precise physiognomy. Its
authors are the sole creators of both text and drawings with quite a
well-defined artistic identity and they often dedicate years to producing
one work. They are intellectuals and artisans marked by their high
profile who will not delegate any part of their work to teams of serial
illustrators, as is the case with traditional comics. It is consoling that the
international list of the best also includes many Italians including the
Venetian by adoption, Hugo Pratt, who in far-off 1967 published “Una
ballata del mare salato” (Ballad of The Salt Sea - Harvill Press 1996),
a precursor of the graphic novel, and the first in the fortunate series
featuring Corto Maltese.
BODO
GASTON
BOHEM
Visioni di territori
in trasformazione
Boehm. Luoghi all’apparenza immaginari che vivono immersi
Ammettendo
questi luoghi come rappresentazioni fantastiche resta comunque
Desertificazioni
massicce hanno interessato vaste aree lasciando all’asciutto ettari
BODO GASTON BOHEM
Vision of changing landscapes
by Federica Santoro
It is the landscape that is the star in the works of Bodo Gaston
Boehm: apparently imaginary places that live in absolute space
and time; visions of a bleak land where human presence is
banned.
Always attracted by the typical wonderfully alive veiled horizons
of Renaissance paintings in which air and light seem to move
freely and merge into a single whole heaven and earth, and by
the three-dimensional space created by vanishing lines and perspective,
Boehm chooses to refocus attention on the landscape
by using it as an archetype of a state of detachment and isolation
between man and nature. It is as if an imaginary and wild place
could act as a sublime mirror held up to the sinister emptiness of
consciousness that keeps man from worrying about his natural
environment, and as if a mutating landscape could raise questions
which demand obligatory answers.
Even if we accept these places as fantastic depictions we are still
required us to ask why: why such a bleak imaginary world? The
artist, through the virtuosity of plastic research, frames the environmental
issues in a deterministic and subtly provocative lens,
that of a tourist of possibility who reflects, observes and faithfully
reports what he sees. Sometimes, attracted by the force of events,
he focuses on what appears critical to him, sometimes he indulges
in ecstatic visions of lonely and barren places or converses
with a mental world that slips into the surreal and metaphysical
dimension of dreams, as in the series of islands where the hollows
and ravines photograph a landscape in which it is impossible
to draw the boundaries.
Unlike figurative painting, which celebrates the myth-figure of
man, the landscape devoid of actors becomes itself the main
attraction. Only man is completely absent from the depicted places
but life has not disappeared entirely. Craters of old withered
gardens boil in whirls where the redundant material is used to
capture the attention around an unstoppable movement that both
attracts and frightens at the same time. A destructive force pervades
the scene just like a flow of incandescent lava observed very
close at hand. The viewer’s sensory perceptions are shaken while
matter that in other works calms down to recover the soft form of
a refuge or a cradle here alienates and disturbs.
For the artist, the landscape is a theatre in which men are given
the freedom to create their own sets and live their lives. The skyscrapers
of the metropolis, the rural houses, the folds of a hand
or cracks on a wall: for him it is all the same, everything is a sort
of landscape by connection or reference and as a result by putting
certain environments into focus, by isolating them from their
immanent horizon, we can almost see these folds and crevices,
hostile surfaces but seething with life.
Nature can be amazing, startling us with its beauty, but if it is
neglected, or even worse constantly ravaged, it will stop providing
the privileged scenario for existence anymore. In Boehm’s
works, man who for years has greedily subjugated nature to his
needs is the great culprit for the transformation that is occurring
under his eyes, and his absence from the scene is more than
proof: it is an indictment. Water and land have been contaminated
with waste from industrial production to make huge areas of
the planet unrecognizable. Massive desertification has affected
large zones, leading to the aridity of vast tracts that were once
arable and letting them become immense expanses of scorched
earth. The artist’s challenge is to awaken man, to open his eyes
to what he pretends not to see every day: the landscapes depicted
do not belong to an unknown planet, nor are they the result
of an apocalyptic fantasy: they are the reality. There is no moral
intent but only the hope that faced with images of such inhospitable
and hostile nature man will reconsider the landscape as a
common good to preserve, to live with in a relationship of mutual
exchange in a primordial manner, and return to being the main
protagonist of its destiny.
GABRIELE
GRONES
Ritratto e concetto
dello spirito
incarnato
di Gianluca D’Incà Levis
8
statico, compiuto in sé stesso.
minuziosi è illusoria, infatti i dettagli scrupolosi (intesi come capelli,
in base all’idea che intendo rappresentare.
riproduttiva in senso iper-realistico.” (da un’intervista rilasciata a Francesca
Gaio).
autoptico, dove Grones, dolcemente, definitivamente, li apre. Ci ricordano
devono giacere fermi, supini, come morti.
Cercando
I ritratti
divengono pozzi psichici, di profondità impressionante. Uomini vivi e
GABRIELE GRONES
Portrait and concept of the incarnate spirit
by Gianluca D’Incà Levis
Gabriele Grones was born in 1983 in Arabba (Belluno) where he lives and works. He graduated in painting from the Accademia di Belle
Arti in Venice. His training was the classical type received in art schools: European painting of the XIX century as well as American painters
from the end of the nineteenth century such as Robert Henry, Hopper’s master, and other latent “presences” that surface in his work, while
the painstaking attention to detail and the study of light recall illustrious seventeenth century examples. After patient and reasoned exercise on
traditional subjects, around 2007 the artist initiated a period of reflection and personal reprocessing of the acquired images. The genre type, fullfigure
portrait is static, complete in itself. The much-loved past painting is stationary, locked in history, while Grones was now driven to seeking
an original and contemporary model capable of renewing this language. Continuing to work on the frontal portrait, the artist strove to make a
sort of icon from it in order to paint a centred image, formally complete and autonomous. Men, the predominant subject, are represented and
synthesized in their faces which constitute a sort of carnal biography. Grones then proceeds with the digging activities to bring the sedimentations
to the (pictorial) surface, the traces of those private vicissitudes, those emotional events that are made flesh on the face. A radical and
frightening task is entrusted to the portrait: it is capable of representing the very vital essence of a person. But for this to be possible the portrait
must be rigorous. Attention which is humanistic and surgical at the same time allows Grones to depict the model with precision. The format of
the canvasses is generally quite small (30 x 40 cm), consistently with the microscopic analysis of the emotional sign. The abolition of distracting
backgrounds, the extreme craftsmanship in the execution of the plot, the fabric, the micro-variations, the total structures, colour, lighting: these
are the investigative tools with which he penetrates into the emotional maps which surface on the men’s faces. It is a sort of pictorial speleology,
slow and meticulous, practiced calmly with patient concentration. The dredging of sediments, intended as traces of life, is carried out in silence,

through micrometric circumspections and absolute control of the sign. This work method is therefore intended, through a reaffirmation of painting,
to transcribe – in a human manner – the truth of the emotional facts life is composed of. This is evidently an attitude, far from the visual purity of
the hyperrealist type, in which everything is already there, present on the image, detail is copied, and the finished work is nothing more than an
impressionist frame. “The representative precision of the minute details is illusory. In fact the scrupulous details (intended as the hair, pores in the
skin, etc.) in my paintings do not reproduce the model precisely, but are recreated and redistributed using a criterion suggested to me by the view
of the subject and as a function of him. I try to filter what I see in order to restore what I want to be perceived on the basis of the idea I intend
to represent. In this sense the degree of abstraction is very high and I could say that there is no reproductive precision in the hyperrealist sense.”
(from an interview with Francesca Gaio). Grones’s portraits are very far from being copies of faces. The approach is existentialist, spiritual and
conceptual (that the basis of the reflection and of Grones’s painting, is also conceptual appears evident in the large Self-portrait of 2009-2010).
The facial expressions are not calm. The subjects do not smile obligingly at the painter as he portrays them. So frontal, they appear to be spread
on an autoptic panel where Grones gently and definitively opens them. They recall Mantegna’s Dead Christ, rather than Richard Estes. In
order to be grasped, translated into the painting and without disturbing this operation, they must lie still, supine, as if dead. That is why they are
immobile. The artist has frozen them. And it is in this suspension that Grones can complete their acquisition with the extraction of the filaments
of humanity, seeking in those faces the foundation of their truth as men, their soul. The portraits become psychic wells of impressive depth, men
who are living and vitreous to the point that they seem to be prisoners of themselves, incarcerated in the self. And painting, as always, is a
technique of analysis and of self-analysis.
e l’incisione:
dall’artista singolarmente o in modo interdisciplinare. Infine
E in tempi storici, assieme all’invenzione della stampa,
trasferimento a Cremona.
letteraria dello scrittore polacco Witold Gombrowicz.
d’arte grafica (Lubiana, Cracovia, Portland, Tokyo, Kanagawa,
Sapporo, Pechino, Sarcelles, Praga, Guanlan, Taiwan, Il Cairo,
Milano, Sofia, Qingdao, Lodz, Varna, Rio de Janeiro Chamalières,
edizione.
stata insignita del premio “Friends of the Silesian Museum”, in
italiani contemporanei (A. Perilli, A. Pomodoro, M. Paladino, G.
VLADIMIRO ELVIERI
and engraving: a world, a life
by Giovanna Grossato
Engraving is an art form that encapsulates a world. It is not
merely a question of a technique: it is a procedure that per se
informs the artistic expression right from the germinal idea. Learning
the skills is particularly complex: first of all it implies great
general artistic ability especially in drawing, and then practical
knowledge of a vast range of quite different procedures that the
artist can use both individually or in an interdisciplinary manner.
Finally, working on a plate, whatever the material, also means
using sculptural gestures: when cutting, removing, carving and
then inking, when etching the plate, when using the press to tame
the paper rendered receptive by the right amount of humidity ...
In short, a certain dose of physical as well as creative energy is
necessary when making engravings. Engraving is a very ancient
and universal manifestation of human thought right from the prehistoric
graffiti created by homo sapiens on the walls of sacred
grottos using rudimental tools. And in historical times, along with
the invention of printing, it constitutes the first form of illustration
for books and, in general, of widespread depiction outside the
courts.
Vladimiro Elvieri, born in Vicenza (1950) but active for many years
in Cremona and abroad, is one of the rare “pure” engravers
who produces his engravings both by applying refined traditional
techniques and by experimenting with new and original ones.
After training artistically at the Istituto Statale d’Arte per la Ceramica
at Nove, in 1975 he began collaborating profitably with
Armando Martini’s “Torchio Thiene” artistic printing works until
he moved to Cremona. Then in 1979 he frequented the atelier
of Henri Goetz in Paris as well as those of other graphic artists
and masters such as Hayter and Friedlaender, and collaborated
with the Milanese ‘Grafica d’arte’ review in which he published
articles regarding engraving on Plexiglas.
Up until 1994 he directed the biennial course of traditional and
experimental chalcographic techniques in Cremona and at Kaus
in Urbino, along with Maria Chiara Toni, also an engraver and
life partner, and at the same time dedicated himself to a rich
output of engraving which comprises 560 works to date, mostly
produced by drypoint on Plexiglas or PVC. Also famous are
his “luminous drawings” and his “graffiti on Cibachrome”, works
created using two media, photography and graffito, the contents
of which were initially inspired by the literary works of the Polish
writer, Witold Gombrowicz.
Inspiration from literature is one of the characteristics of the art
of Elvieri who often draws on it for the production of a very rich
repertory of images in which light always plays a fundamental
role both as a means and as a pictorial element per se.
His refined awareness of his craft, the “insatiable technical and
formal curiosity” (D. Formaggio), the originality of the themes
developed through unsettling surreal paths or with biting humour,
make Elvieri a tireless scholar and experimenter in his own discipline
as well as a master.
A participant in the most prestigious international biennali and
triennali of graphic art (Ljubljana, Krakov, Portland, Tokyo, Kanagawa,
Sapporo, Beijing, Sarcelles, Prague, Guanlan, Taiwan,
Cairo, Milan, Sofia, Qingdao, Lodz, Varna, Rio de Janeiro, Chamalières,
etc.) where he has received important awards, Vladimi-
o Elvieri has also been able through his chalcographic activities
to develop bustling exchange activities in his Cremona studio
with artists from different countries. He is the originator and curator
of the international engraving biennale of Cremona, “L’Arte
e il Torchio / Art and the Printing Press”, which reached its VII
edition in 2011. Today this review has acquired great prestige
and over the years, with the donations of the invited artists, it
has been helping to form a rich Collection of Contemporary Graphic
Art housed in the Drawings and Prints Gallery of Cremona’s
“Ala Ponzone” City Museum. In February 2012, the Biennale was
awarded the “Friends of the Silesian Museum” prize following the
donation of 94 engravings by the most significant contemporary
Italian artists (A. Perilli, A. Pomodoro, M. Paladino, G. Zigaina,
etc.) to the Muzeum Slaskie of Katowice, in Poland. A very recent
show at the ab/arte Gallery in Brescia entitled “Ai confini del
segno” successfully showcased a series of new engravings by the
artist and by his partner, Maria Chiara Toni.
Both recently received an invitation to exhibit their graphics
works from June 2012 at the prestigious Galerie
Michelle Champetier in Cannes, specialized in engravings
and works on paper by the leading artists of the
Riuscire
- caratteristiche simili a quelle sudtirolesi.
BRESSANONE
Comparisons and assimilations
on themes of the contemporary
by Tazio Cirri
photos by Oskar Zingerle
Bressanone’s Galleria Civica is located under the town’s Portici
Maggiori and was inaugurated in July 2008 under the aegis
of the town council. With the guidance of its current director, Alex
Pergher, it has shown itself over four years to be able to confirm
and consolidate the premises behind its foundation: become a
venue for dialogue and a meeting place for the town and some
of the leading artists both local and foreign from various origins.
These premises are shared by all town galleries that propose not
only to provide a primary cultural service to the area in which
they are located but also to act as a connecting network in an
ambit which, perhaps more than others, appears to be tightly woven
into international relationships or, as they say today, common
to the “global village”. In short, a place dedicated to the promotion
of art – a world which is extremely variegated per se – acquires
all the more added value to the extent that it is capable of
interweaving moments and trends, personalities and sensibilities,
into a perennial fluid transiting in time and space. Being able
to focus on one of the neurological points of contemporary art or
on its protagonists, elaborating on their contents and intentions
and extending the reflections on them to the community of nonexperts
is certainly a virtue if not actually a need.
On the basis of these premises, the artists and those who work
in the ambit of Bressanone’s Galleria Civica are mainly asked
for “suitable specific and exemplifying action for requalifying the
function of the new gallery. Therefore, the more diversified the
programme the higher the level of the exhibitions.”
The spirit of openness to foreign artists from different cultural areas
therefore appears clear and they are provided with an opportunity
for proposing experiences that can be compared with local
ones and develop a profitable exchange with them. This then
also gives rise to a very particular and non-contradictory need
for the Galleria Civica to support twinning with other “mountain”
towns and localities, ones that culturally and morphologically
have characteristics that are similar to those of the South Tyrol.
It is in this light that critical interventions, symposia and guided
tours are planned, with an attentive orientation of an educational
character.
Another aspect of the Gallery is the weaving of relationships
and collaborations with different institutions such as Bressanone
University, the scholastic institutes, and artistic clubs and associations.
Its exhibition plans envisage two events of particular significance
every year – an anthropological or retrospective one and a recurrent
one – three appointments with contemporary art, a show
organized by an arts club of Bolzano, two reviews organized by
the “Circolo Artistico S. Erardo” and an exhibition of an artist
from a twinned town.
These were the needs and requests placed at the centre of the
propagation and hosting of contemporary artistic culture which
Bressanone had been calling out for for some time and which the
Galleria Civica is now able to offer.
The Galleria Civica has substantially two aims: provide the gallery,
and the town by extension, with a powerful cultural magnet
through the shows by attracting the interest of visitors and particularly
of those who occasionally attend cultural events; seek
new orientations among the scenarios of contemporary art while
avoiding sensationalism but attempting to sustain a gradual comprehension
process among a wider and wider public.
The first criterion therefore fulfils a need for representation while
the second aims more specifically at the development of the contemporary
artistic culture in the area.
Hence the need for plausible decisions to be taken, governed by
a policy that fundamentally follows the canons of the “new figuration”,
conceptual and informal art, sculpture and installations.
The executive, chaired by Alex Pergher who is also the Gallery’s
genius loci, is composed of the director of the Südtiroler Künstlerbund,
Lisa Trockner, by the art critic, Fiorenzo Degasperi, by the
sculptor Sergio Sommavilla, and by the director of the Diocesan
Museum, Johann Kronbichler, as well as the councillors for the
arts (German/Italian) respectively, Albert Puergstaller (Mayor of
Bressanone) and Gianlorenzo Pedron (Deputy Major) and Alessandra
Scorrano (Head of the Culture Office).
TONI VEDÙ
Umorista eclettico
artista
esporre in numerose città.
Ogni idea, strumento e tecnica dell’arte affascina Vedù
dell’oggetto comune, quotidiano.
Titoli accattivanti come Segno
Come
dice, ancora, Mark Twain, “l’umorismo è una gran cosa, è quello
che ci salva!”
TONI VEDÙ
Humoristic eclectic artist.
by Silvia Neri
graduate of the Venice’s Accademia di Belle Arti, a career
A as a high-school teacher of Drawing, History of Art and Pictorial
Disciplines and a passion for the theatre and its company
of actors: Toni Vedù is this and more – teacher, painter and actor,
a fusion of theory and practice, of teaching and learning as well
as of innovation. Vedù is in fact the ironic “inventor” of the artistic
“movement” named Surrealumorismo, a sort of current that mixes
Surrealism and Humour, obviously in a semi-serious way, which
has led him to exhibit in many cities. His recent book, La pittura
ha le gambe lunghe (“Painting has longlegs”) is a hymn to the
“art of the crisis” as he defines it, and to its artists who continue
to work despite today’s difficulties. Every idea, instrument and
technique of art fascinates Vedù but he chooses the watercolour
as his favourite expressive technique: light and thoughtful, it makes
it possible to apply considered but rapid brushstrokes. The
subject depicted: reality. Nothing simpler, nothing more difficult.
Mark Twain once said, in fact, that the great difference between
reality and fantasy was that fantasy has to be credible. This is a
little pearl of truth that Toni Vedù adopts as a model, while giving
free rein to his unrestrained imagination. In his watercolours,
everyday objects become the stars of intrepid adventures, and
isky games of daring architectural constructivism reveal themselves
in their form, those of the tools of the artist himself, so that
the pencils and felt-tip pens become the fundamental bases for
vessels with unfurled sails heading towards boundless horizons.
Grandmother’s silver sugar bowls become ships with great paper
sails that navigate towards deep abstract seas with iridescent
nuances. Toni Vedù is a creative and shrewd adult who brings
with him the spellbound and fantastically uncontaminated gaze
of the child as well as a zest for discovery, adventure, gambling,
and error compensated by the satisfaction of success, the conquest
of the goal, joyful and playful unawareness. The artist’s
seriousness can be seen in the commitment that he nourishes in
his work, which he has cultivated for over thirty years, with the
proposal to the public of images that are always fresh and new,
full of genuine material creativity and intelligence. Exploiting the
infinite possibilities of application that the watercolour technique
offers to his faithful supporters, the Vicentine artist conquers with
his charisma and consummate mastery. Vedù loves the reflection
of the surrealists, introspection and putting the io and the self into
play, the dualism between personal interpretation and comparison
with reality, just like an actor who, in order to perform, must
intuit, understand, re-elaborate and interpret. The painter’s cursus
studiorum proposes the same stages as the study of the theatre,
because it is in their crafts that fiction and reality merge, a unique
surrealism, fleeting nuanced limits, no boundary except perhaps
a fine line where the artist’s personal eclecticism takes life. It
is here that his artistic talent appears. But among the historical
avant-gardes, Vedù is also close to Metafisica, an exclusively
Italian movement in which the conception of the common object,
the quotidian, can be found. Furthermore, it is also possible to
note the typical irony of cartoons in his works, another great skill,
where humour combines with literature and poetry in the titles of
the works in which the quotations appear to be transformed by
the free and brilliant playfulness of the mind. Engaging titles such
as Segno di una notte (“Sign of a night”), A vele spiegate (“With
unfurled sails”) or Non vedo l’ora (“I can’t wait”). And yet, it is
specifically in the relationship between fun and responsibility that
references to great contemporary artists like Jeff Koons can be
found: in his poetics he speaks of his works, affirming that: “My
work is amusement. But I do not want it to be ‘easy amusement’.
I believe that a part of this amusement is difficult.” To be serious
in fun you must have experience of play and Toni Vedù blends
responsibility and playfulness seriously, taking life with humour
and irony, savouring the perfume of being, immersing himself in
the everyday nature of common objects and elevating them to
elements of fantastic adventures. As Mark Twain also remarked:
“Humor is the great thing, the saving thing after all.”
COSTANTIN
MIGLIORINI
Dicotomia
dell’esistenza

25
26
intervento pittorico ma anche tridimensionalmente,
con un bassorilievo in gesso posto
sulla sommità dell’opera, che diventa naturale
continuazione dell’elemento grafico.
Dichotomy of existence
by Giulia Querenghi
Un lui 2010
Olio, acrilico su carta + pennarello | Oil, acrylic on paper with felt-tip pen
cm. 100x70
The double and the opposite are themes that many artists have expended time and
energy on in the tireless search for an aesthetic response. Costantin Migliorini’s
solution to this ancestral enigma is a canvas that is no longer locked in two dimensions
but a space from which painting seems to be able to escape through the use of
oil while the graphic sign flattens totally on the background. The body takes life from
the materiality of the vivacious and intense pictorial sign while the “unsustainable
lightness of the ideas is recounted by the felt-tip and by the pen. On the canvas the
stories interweave life lived and life imagined, life dreamt and life feared. If the body
is a complex, fascinating and deceptive mechanism, the mind is the cradle of the Id,
of feelings. Both are as nothing without the other and have a sense of existing only
where their opposite exists in an encounter-clash which becomes the live wire of entire
existence. In this way Constantin’s painting generates paradox, ambiguity and contrast
and gives form to the dualism between being and appearing, between matter
and thought. A dichotomous presence takes form on the canvas, a presence aimed at recounting the essence of every individual and
especially the feminine being towards which the artist nourishes a particular affection. The subjects unfurl wings towards a more complete
and complex existence with the abandonment of the limits of physicality to discover their own essence. The skin itself becomes a
diary charged with strokes that recount the human being in its complexity, sometimes no longer anatomical but spiritual. Zoomorphic
figures appear everywhere and invade the mind of the protagonists portrayed by the painter, metaphors of their emotions. These are
open-eyed dreams depicted with the livid tones of the night and clash with the soft rosy tonalities that normally characterize the human
figure. There is a continuous interplay based on the double and the opposite.
It is the sign rather than the word that narrates their story; what really says who they are is no longer the face, weathered by living,
but their backs, the shoulders that bear the weight of being, where deluded expectations, dreams realized and awaiting a tomorrow
that must still arrive, come together.
In the stories recounted by the artist every human being is a unique exemplar modelled by experience, while the body, rather than
being a simple container, is transformed into a fundamental element for understanding the ego. Graphic signs of scientific origin
make space for themselves on the canvas, put there as interrogation marks by the artist with regard to a science that claims to explain
everything but which finds itself irremediably blocked by questions for which it has no answer. These elements become the manifesto
of human limits and at the same time an emblem of man’s continuous striving towards the discovery of himself. Migliorini’s investigation
concretely reaches the third dimension when he is called on, along with other artists, to give life to the “Uova d’artista” (“Artist’s
egg”) project, created with a view to the establishment of a dedicated museum in the town of Tredozio, in Emilia Romagna. Starting
from drawings that recall the genre scenes painted on pots and amphorae during the classical and Hellenistic periods, but revisited
in a contemporary key, the artist has created a sculptural work from a terracotta egg. In an unusual project for Migliorini which
combines harmoniously with research, the egg, a universal symbol of the origin of life, also becomes the starting point for the artist
for the duality that characterizes our existence and the cosmos in general. He has interpreted the egg not simply through pictorial
action but also three-dimensionally, with a plaster bas-relief placed at the top of the work which becomes the natural continuation of
the graphic element. It is the artist’s wish to recount his hypothesis of myth, the one that takes form: the hope of being able to investigate
the primordial matter from which everything originated. Hominid-rabbits and hominid-pigs are given the task of proliferating
and rapidly populating the earth, giving rise to the first civilization of which we are the last descendants. Once again in Constantin’s
works the zoomorphic figures are the key to understanding in order to explain the intangibles and irrationalities of human nature in a
humorous manner. The artist’s intention is to induce the observer to reflect on himself and on the other of himself intended as double
and opposition.
ALBERTO
progetti sviluppati in multidirezione: oggetti ripetuti e trasformati
una direzione vagamente onirica, allucinata eppure lucidissima;
una dimensione che teatralmente potremmo definire “tragicomica”
dove emerge il senso occulto del quotidiano. Oggetti troppo
(Chiodo, 1998, bronzo, 110x40x9 cm; DNA, 2001, ceramica,
recupera l’allusione come valore creativo.
The relationship with Alberto De Braud’s art is happily conditioned
by his sculpting qualities and by his ability to manage the
spaces in which his works move. The compositional clarity, the
polish of the structures and the extraordinary formal invention arrived
at by the artist make it possible to assess each of his works
not as inert material but as animated matter from which the compositional
act expresses his curious and intelligent vitality, making
it his strength, the epicentre of every possible conceptual interpretation.
Between homage and irreverence, De Braud’s sculpture
often appears as a condensate of processes rather than as a
fixed representation, also as a result of its installation propensity:
based essentially on traditional techniques (bronze, iron, ceramic
and terracotta) it does present itself in unequivocal forms but ones
that are nevertheless charged with a special transparency. This
is one of the elements than renders his special creative corpus
stimulating, especially as regards the ability to combine craft and
experimentation in a single expression on a fulcrum that eliminates
the sterile contrasts of history and contemporary gesture. The
immediate recognisability of the objects, open to metaphorical
intertwinements of visual relationships, traces a symbolic path in
which the middle is the intermediate point between individual,
collective and historical memory. The borderline between tradition
and innovation appears as a weak and irksome memory
compared with the complex faceting of such an intensely elusive
and provocative personality: in this way Alberto De Braud implies
research which invites us to reflect on the continuity that art
produces inside culture and the formation of communication, a
practice that envelopes his entire opus which is proposed as a
model of language without dimensions and limitations, both of
sense and of time. This involves a system capable of presenting
itself in itself as a result and never as a code of predefined structures;
an overcoming of barriers to reach places in which the sole
logic remains that of an imaginative and working persistence
in which it is natural to perceive the desire to create language
and communication with renewed tensions. This entails a neces-

sary vitality which only art can offer and realize and which De
Braud agitates in the groove of a formal elegance channelled
back to inspiration. Over everything, then, is the quality of the
poly-materiality and polychromy (it is no accident that ceramic is
one of his preferred materials) which makes it possible to create
projects developed in many directions and render them concrete:
objects repeated and transformed in which the proliferation
of associations of sense dictated by his vocabulary reveals the
essence of things beyond every rhetorical attitude. The singular
presence of an artist such as Alberto De Braud not only in the
national panorama (his long stay in America and then in France,
before his return to Milan, the city where he was born in 1959) is
certainly implied by his impossible classification dictated by the
apparent diversity of the visual structures at which he arrives, with
the genial stylistic distortions that characterize that creative path
of his in which the more attentive and sharper observer must be
able to recognize the recapitulation of a consistent development
of ideals and concepts that provide the real stylistic key to his
work, work that acts in a vaguely oneiric direction, hallucinated
yet extremely lucid; a dimension that we could define as theatrical
and “tragicomical” in which the occult sense of the quotidian
emerges. Objects that are too small or, more often, too big to
be considered to be “toys” (Chiodo, 1998, bronze, 110x40x9
cm; DNA, 2001, ceramic, 350x160x116 cm; and Le pinces à
linge, 2007, 17x3x2.5 m) restore a powerful sense of ambiguity
beyond an initial surprising encounter. It is specifically through
the conscious emphasizing of the contradiction that the value of
ironic stylization and pretence is revealed and exhibited at more
intense levels, thereby presenting itself as a metaphor for the
involvement of the public which these works presuppose. Hence
the stylistic contamination and the succession of different expressive
peculiarities are concentrated in a personal grammar that
engulfs the object in which capacity and transgression are concentrated
DOLOMITI
CONTEMPORANEE
Unesco), utilizzandone/evidenziandone diversi contenuti specifici.
Contemporanea, nell’area dolomitica.
a cittadella dell’arte.
Andraz, Casso, Agordo, Taibon, Vas, e in altri siti dolomitici,
e performances.
L’attività riprenderà a luglio 2012.
DOLOMITI
CONTEMPORANEE
An art and
networking project
by Gianluca D’Incà Levis
The Dolomiti Contemporanee (DC)
project, launched 30th July 2011, is
alive and doing well.
In the first months of activity DC has carved
out a space for itself on the national
contemporary art scene.
The project is an open cultural and dynamic
experience which originates in
a territory (the Unesco Dolomites) using
and highlighting specific content. The
project is very “hospitable”. Through systems
such as the Artists’ Residence and
the exhibition blocks, DC brings people,
factors, elements – all quite different
from each other –within this territory (…),
creating a sort of centre for meeting and
exchange. The project however does not
coincide perfectly with the territory, as
it continuously shifts from its central location,
bringing with it ideas, concepts,
projects, and content. DC is thus primarily
a mode of action, a channel.
One of the key elements is this: a bond
with the territory, a cultural choice, precise
and deliberate, rather than a vernacular
reflection. DC is not a sedentary
experience, but a mobile and multiverse
process, which identifies some primeval
elements (real and metaphorical: basic
elements, strong, clean, generated from
an inexhaustible and integral environment).
These elements are used as principles
of renewed action. At the same
time a centripetal model (hospitality) and
centrifuge (extroversion).
Networks are the cultural, social, political
(in the broad sense: territorial) backbone
of this project/process.
The networks are diverse and their integration
create the support structure.
There is an institutional network (Veneto
Region, Belluno Province, Municipal
Councils, BIM Piave); environmental
network (Ministry for the Environment,
Dolomite Unesco Foundation, Belluno
Dolomite National Park, along with festivals
like Oltre Le Vette, CAI, company
sponsors such as Salewa, Dolomiti Rocce,
etc); artistic network (among our
partners are Fondazione Bevilacqua La
Masa e Palazzo Riso. Together with the
museums Mart e Museion and Reinhold
Messne MMM, DC is part of the Kun-
Start group of works. Talks and collaborations
have recently started with Museo
Rimoldi di Cortina, and Museo Madre di
Napoli. Either through its own stands or
individual artworks, DC participated in
ArtVerona, Artissima Lido, Expodolomiti,
KunstArt); industry network (numbering
over eighty sponsors thanks to the support
of Confindustria Belluno Dolomiti);
and finally schools, associations, etc.
The idea is to create an engine, a Centre
for Contemporary Art, in the Dolomite
area. An experimental Laboratory, capable
of producing new images of the
mountains, without celebrating them, but
rather assailing them.
In 2011 the fulcrum of DC was Sass Muss
(Sospirolo Council, Belluno). This large
industrial archeological complex, made
up of several large pavilions immersed
in the natural environment and owned
by Società Attiva Spa, was reclaimed
and re-equipped as an art centre. We
invited local and foreign artists, and organised
contemporary art exhibitions in
an area of almost 5,000 square metres.
The artists (over 80, produced 8 exhibitions
viewed by 8,000 visitors) lived in
this centre, in the artist Residency. They
explored the Dolomites and selected themes,
many of them producing their own
artworks in the Lab, thanks to the materials
donated by our partners, who allowed
us to initiate a process of cultural
productivity.
DC is a visual arts Lab on location: art in
the environment. This year the project is
moving, with initiatives for direct contact
with the environment planned at Cortina
d’Ampezzo, Andraz, Casso, Agordo,
and other Dolomites sites through installations
and performances.
Activity resumes in June 2012. Another
series of exhibitions, along with meetings,
debates, and educational workshops
are planned. Various new collaborations
are emerging. Among them, a
partnership between DC/Sass Muss and
Forte Marghera/Parco del Contemporaneo,
financed by the Veneto Region.
This project is a focal point between the
Dolomites and Venice, and is a Venetian
candidate for the Nord-Est Capitale della
Cultura Europea 2019. It envisages a
series of joint artistic initiatives planned
for the summer of 2012 at both locations.
40
The subterranean contemplations
of Elio Ciol
by Alessandro Benetti
Elio Ciol’s poetics sink their roots into a personal interpretation
of the neorealist climate of post-war Italy, stripped of the leftleaning
political connotations and charged with a more universal
“humanist commitment” (Silvia Paoli) of Catholic inspiration.
In the words of Angelo Maggi, the Friulian photographer tackles
the powerful reality of an innate “conscious joy of aesthetic per-
ception”. The filter of this attraction towards the real, composed and enthusiastic at the same time, is the fundamental premise of the
gaze Ciol focuses on it, a gaze which frees it from the contingent and elevates it to a non-historical and timeless dimension that tends
towards perfection.
The path towards the latter involves refining the most appropriate techniques for depicting it. The intense research into the theme
of light and experimentation in the infrared field are carried out with the rigour and severity of one who understands its expressive
potential but at the same time distrusts the dangerous distortions of perception to which careless use of such instruments can lead.
The painstaking work of the instrumental component of photographs is the indispensable support for the deployment of Ciol’s skill
in organizing the shot. Perfection in this case springs from the considered composition of its constituent elements on the basis of
a measurement ideal which is intended to bring the incidental back to the necessary order of things. Measuring space in Ciol’s
photographs means indentifying the rhythmic scans passing through it and structuring it: rows of vines, balustrades and people are
immortalized above all in their role as sequences that subdivide the picture. The intense chiaroscuro alternations constitute a further
point of reference in the comprehension of the three-dimensional architecture of the real translated into the two-dimensionality of the
photographic plane.
The landscape that is impressed on the latter is therefore always precisely measureable: the Friulian photographer prefers “cultivated
nature, constructed and conserved by the work of man” through “the gestures of always” (Robi Ronza) to untamed nature. Ciol does
not idealize the real: instead, he provides observers with the tools necessary for orienting the gaze towards its interior to permit them
to abandon themselves completely to contemplating its beauty without fear of getting lost.
The shots from the series entitled “Concrete Astrazioni” (“Concrete abstractions”) constitute a fundamental change of direction in
Ciol’s work in which he was called upon for the first time in his career to tackle “an object without iconography” (Sergio Momesso)
after many decades during which he dedicated himself to eminently figurative photography. The spectacular landscape of Antelope
Canyon is the point of departure for an interesting reflection on the relationship between representation and abstraction: “I realized
how the real can suggest the abstract”, says Ciol in this regard. It is not a question of “documenting”, as in his previous works dedicated
to artworks, or of “representing”, the way the Veneto landscape, fruit of centuries of human intervention, can be represented.
Instead, in this case, Ciol grasps the abstraction inherent in the
natural conformation (wild nature) of a real place which in the
translation into photography is transformed into “a continuous
emotion of forms and light.” Despite the palpable emotional involvement,
which seems to allude to a higher spirituality, the space
of the canyon is not simply dematerialized interplay, always
technically perfect, between light and shadow. On the contrary,
the chiaroscuro passages – more tormented here than ever given
the rough conformation of the rock walls – restore the impression
of devastating materiality, the materiality of nature stratified over
the centuries. Never catching the totality of this stratification but
only a part of it, the photographer’s lens alludes to the possibility
for man to intervene in this mighty underground process by
placing his own earthly works in direct continuity with it. The
images of “Concrete Astrazioni”, therefore, represent a successful
attempt to renew the poetics of Ciol who, far from reneging on
the conceptual premises of his previous experiences, expresses
them here with original strength: Ciol re-emerges from the depths
of the underground enriched by the supreme contemplation of
the primordial form of the stratification over time.
13 Mostra Internazionale di Architettura
Common Grounds.
Coltivare il terreno comune
di Anna Livia Friel
46
edizione dovrebbe rassicurarci: Common Ground sembra promettere
scambio e confronto.
chiamato a rispondere.
The 13th International
Exhibition of Architecture
Common Grounds.
by Anna Livia Friel
W hat unites most of the events of international appeal these
days is a certain information overkill which creates
difficulty for all kinds of people: countless images, objects and
reflections stud the Venetian kermis generated by the art and
architecture Biennials which, on the one hand, deafen without
fully managing to define a debate, and on the other continue
to attract with their ambition to recapitulate the panorama of
worldwide output.
As regards these premises, the title announced for the forthcoming
edition should be reassuring: Common Ground seems to
promise a little clarity and at the very least sets itself the aim of
laying down solid foundations.
The objective of the director, David Chipperfield, is to find the
starting point at which everyone can identify themselves by exhibiting
architecture’s common ground in order to provide a forum
for exchange and comparison. Without losing sight of the theme
of architecture in artistic and intellectual speculations that are too
remote, the aim of the exhibition is to trigger the same types of
connections that constitute the contemporary architectural debate,
with the reanimation of the basic knowledge that has perhaps
been lost or forgotten and which require a sort of refoundation
in this new era.
It is a curating method which provides an opportunity for triggering
relational circuits capable of crossing geographical, ideological
and generational boundaries. The participants will not
only be invited to produce works and installations but also to
propose other names to collaborate with, thereby calling around
them the entire cultural and human context linked to the project
– the media, publishing houses, galleries, schools and research
institutions – in order to complete the genealogical picture of the
creative process and fertilize the common ground.
Common Ground, Chipperfield points out, also alludes to the
space created between the buildings, not only in terms of the
interstitial surface that constitute the binder of the city but pausing
to consider the urban dynamics inherent in the architectural
project and the social, public and public ambits the architect is
called on to respond to.
According to the curator this ought to eliminate another shadow
cast upon architecture today: individual objects without any apparent
respect that rise in the middle of cities and countrysides
with the sole intention of catalyzing the broader public’s attention,
ones that seem to resolve their aspirations in scintillating
exhibitionism. The show refutes this situation and shows how
architectural interventions can condense intentions, nature and
opportunities of different kinds by reasoning on countless levels,
influenced by different problems.
In reality, and all the more so today, Architecture can provide an
important contribution to defining some of these social questions
and, though veiled in a certain voguish patina, it knows how
to and can concentrate – and sometimes resolve – problems of
great interest.
A complete description of the architectural “grounds” will, Chipperfield
hopes, make it possible to obtain a “non-critical inclusiveness”,
open to cross-fertilization and enriched by the contributions
of the invited participants and, in a certain way, self-generated.
“We wish to give the participants an opportunity to explain work
within the wider context of architectural practice, not only as a
demonstration of their own talent, but also to unite us in defining
our ambitions and responsibilities,” says the director of this exhibition:
will it really be the curatorship of an “archistar” that will
be able to reaffirm the priorities of architecture in the context of
the new economic and political pressures imposed by the recent
global difficulties (and new awareness)?
41 countries will participate at the 13th International Architecture
Exhibition which will open on 29 August, some of them for the
first time: Kosovo, Kuwait and Peru. The moment has still not yet
come for Vatican City whose presence at the event in the lagoon
has been rumoured for several years.
The traditional venues of the Giardini and Arsenale will be used
for the great show but there will also be the capillary diffusion
throughout the city of other pavilions and of “collateral events”
proposed by international bodies and institutions.
Fabrizio Plessi al passo del Brennero:
un’ex dogana di frontiera diventa
per chi viaggia tra Austria e Italia
spazio estetico d’accoglienza immerso
artista.
Tirolo, Alto Adige e Trentino.
all’unitarietà dell’intero complesso polifunzionale in quello che oggi
Così come
51
52
Fabrizio Plessi at the Brenner Pass: a former customs house on the
border for those who travel between Austria and Italy becomes a
welcoming aesthetic space immersed in the landscape.
by Giovanna Grossato
Valico del Brennero
Autostrada del Brennero A22 - www.autobrennero.it
Today, a new architectural complex is at the final stage at the
Brenner Pass on an area once used by the customs authorities.
The intention of the construction is to provide the zone with a
particular significance, capable of symbolically welcoming motorway
users when passing between Italy and Austria.
The design, by the general technical director of the A22, Carlo
Costa, to whom Fabrizio Plessi made a significant contribution in
artistic terms, pivots around a work by the artist himself. This is a
great sculpture, created on the occasion of Expo 2000 in Hannover
for the Euregio stand, consisting of three triangles oriented
differently that depict the earth, air and water, vital elements with
which the Alpine landscape is profusely endowed. Around itself
it harmonizes the spaces of the architectural structure which in
turn provides facilities for travellers across the territories of Euregio,
a recently constituted “enlarged” region which is not just a
physical place but also an idea of a consortium of three regions,
Tyrol, Alto Adige and Trentino.
Euregio is therefore represented in this polyvalent construction as
the desire for collaboration of a composite trans-frontier zone,
located in an environment defined above all by its precious, particular
and rich orography. Its population numbers around 1.67
million inhabitants, about 62% of whom are German-speakers,
37% Italian and 1% Ladin. It borders with Vorarlberg, the Salzburg
Land of Bavaria, Carinthia, Veneto, Lombardy and the Swiss
canton of Grisons, from all of which it draws further elements of
cultural variety.
The creation of the new multi-purpose building sprang from the
main aim of developing and promoting the area, both in terms
of cultural identity and of a modern touristic vision. And for this
reason its artistic centre of gravity was placed in Plessi’s great
installation through which the symbolic values linked to water,
with which the region is particularly rich, reveal themselves: the
Tyrolese glaciers, the torrents of the Alto Adige and the lakes of
Trentino, a sort of window towards Europe.
As well as the setting of this “symbolic pivot”, the purchase was
ordered by a presidential decision of October of October 2009,
of other Cor-Ten steel sculptures by Plessi; they will be installed in
the interior spaces of the new structure, the inauguration of which
is scheduled for early September.
Some significant contributions to the architectural project per se
are provided by Fabrizio Plessi: these include the access stairway
to the conference room and to the building’s first floor, and various
furnishing elements which are perfectly in line with the unity
of the entire multi-functional complex which not only envisages a
series of new parking areas for various kinds of vehicle but also
a comfortable rest and refreshment zone.
And as it is required to harmonize with the constructed part the
development, the outdoor space has also been conceived with
particular care with the identification for the main façade of the
building of a silver quartzite stone which blends particularly organically
with the surrounding landscape, and which was extracted
from a local quarry in the Commune of Bolzano. A sort of underlining
and tensioning of the potentials of the open space at the
front is created by pathways, accesses and flights of steps, modular
organisms. And the incorporation of these new elements,
which are superimposed on what already existed without, however,
hiding it or saturating it, was accompanied by a reflection on
the modalities for the development of these lands, in the way that
it has been stratifying and consolidating itself over time.
The minimal quality of the architectural intervention surrounded
by a broad paved band – a real architectural promenade – enriched
by Plessi’s artistic work, contributes to strengthening the
link with the surrounding environment in which all the elements
become part of a single interconnected organism.
Born in Reggio Emilia in 1940, Fabrizion Plessi’s artistic formation
was in Venice where the presence of water constitutes a
fundamental component. Video artist, creator of installations,
films, videotapes and performances, today Plessi is present with
his works in the world’s most important art museums and, since
1968, water has always been the central theme of his work.
Morì infatti a Venezia
otteneva importanti commissioni, oltre a relazionarsi familiarmente
intriganti e a volte misteriose.
Museo Casa Giorgione at Castelfranco Veneto
by Tazio Cirri
Humble and phantasmal, the presence of the great Veneto painter, Zorzi da Castelfranco, welcomes visitors into what was his home,
opened again in May 2009 after a painstaking restoration and reorganization lasting four years, completed in time for the celebrations
of the 5th anniversary of the Giorgione’s death. Here it is now possible to clearly perceive the thought of the artist who, in the early
days of the XVI century, was opening out towards a figuratively renewed world whose extraordinary season would mature with Titian and
with Tintoretto. Even though Giorgione’s pictorial life only lasted a few years, ten all together, his fame was quite consolidated even when
he was still alive and his relatively few works were sufficient for bringing him the recognition of his contemporaries as a master of the first
magnitude and, over time, for building him up to mythical stature. Of the works that have remained, all poorly documented, only one is certified
historically. This is the famous altarpiece depicting the Virgin and Child between Saint Francis and Saint Nicasius with a magnificent
Veneto landscape in the background. This painting provides a link with the Museum a short distance away, and is still in the place for which
it was commissioned in 1502: the main altar in the Cathedral of Castelfranco, the city in which Giorgione was born around 1478 and in
which he lived that little that was allowed him by fate and/or by the plague epidemic that exploded in July 1510, and very soon mowed
down a substantial number of the inhabitants of the Veneto. The first known document of the painter’s activity is the inscription dated 1 June
1506 on the rear of a portrait, the Vienna Laura attributed to him, while payments by the Venetian Senate for the creation of an otherwise
unidentified canvas intended for the Audience Chamber of the Council of Ten in the Ducal Palace were made between 1507 and 1508.
Also curious is the information that can be gleaned from a document of 8 November 1508 relating to a legal action taken by the artist for
non-payment of frescos painted by him in the Fondaco dei Tedeschi
in Venice. These are signs that despite his youth Giorgione obtained
important commissions and also had relations with notables such as
Isabella d’Este with whom he exchanged correspondence in 1510,
the year of his own death. The jewel in the crown of the Museum
is the lovely “Frieze with the Liberal and Mechanical Arts” which
decorates the top of the walls in the main room, on the house’s piano
nobile, and reveals a man who was abreast with his times and
familiar with the latest humanist culture. It is probable, in any case,
that the painter shared the house with the astronomer, Giovan Battista
Abioso. But all the rooms add something towards reconstructing
Giorgione’s personality despite the paucity of information available.
The layout provides various keys along the exhibition path for understanding
not only Giorgione’s biography but also the territorial and
cultural context in which he was immersed. And if his works speak in
clear language from the artistic point of view and constitute one of
the most interesting aspects of the period of transition from the painting
in Bellini’s style to a fully Renaissance one, there is a feature that
renders almost all of them intriguing and sometimes mysterious. Their
interpretation in almost never univocal or free from recondite meanings
and hidden allusions: the people portrayed, both immersed in
landscapes or placed in the foreground with a backdrop of indeterminate
and obscure interiors, almost always lend themselves to a
metaphorical or allegorical reading. This is the case with the famous
Tempest but also with the Portrait of a gentleman in arms with equerry
From the Uffizi Gallery or the Self-portrait in the guise of David
in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig: none entirely
exhaustive, all reticent and fascinating. The quantity of iconological
and metahistorical ideas in Giorgione’s paintings justifies the wealth
of literature that has flourished around his meagre biography. Some
are scientific annotations such as the one by Marin Sanudo whose
Diaries contain precious information on some of his paintings, while
others are more fanciful as in Neri Pozza’s novella, Donna dalla
Dalmazia, in which the Vicentine writer imagines Giorgione in the
backdrop of the 1510 Venice plague during which the painter died.
Canova e la danza 03|03|2012 - 30|09|2012
La danza nella
cultura classica
greca, a cui si
ispirava Canova,
aveva numerose
e diverse manifestazioni:dall’agitazione
delle
Menadi, invasate
dalle divinità
dell’ebbrezza, ai
movimenti marziali
dei giovani
danzatori pirrici
che simulavano
le posizioni di
attacco e di difesa,accompagnati
dal suono
del flauto. La
tradizione letteraria
dell’antica
Grecia e della
civiltà romana ci
riferisce inoltre
Dance in Greek culture, from which Canova drew inspiration, manifested
itself in numerous and different ways: from the agitation of
the maenads, invaded by the divinities of rapture, to the martial movements
of the young pyrrhic dancers who simulated the positions
of attack and defence, accompanied by the sound of the flute. The
literary tradition of Ancient Greece and of Roman civilization also
refers us to some very widespread popular dances with actions of
mixing participants combined with leaping movements; then there
were also many young people’s dances such as the Cordax which
is sometimes assimilated to Italian dances like the tarantella, still
fashionable today not only in Southern Italy but all over the world.
Canova was genuinely enthusiastic about dancing and particularly
loved popular and theatrical dancing. A few years after Canova’s
death, his friend Antonio D’Este recalled that the two of them went
“strolling on holidays in the Monti and Trastevere regions to watch
the girls of the populace dancing”. But other artistic sources that
influenced Canova’s production included the wall frescos in Herculaneum
and Pompeii and Titian’s Bacchus and Arianna where
a dancer appears with tambourines, similar to the one produced
by Canova between 1809 and 1812 and which is exhibited in the
Possagno Museum until the end of September.
“The merit of these relics is that most of them would bring honour to
the most illustrious Museums of Italy.”
It was with these words in 1867 that Cesare Bernasconi, curator of
the city’s museum, convinced the city council of Verona to purchase
the entire collection belonging to Jacopo Muselli around the middle
of the eighteenth century. Today it is housed in the Archaeology
Museum while the coins went to the medal collection of the Castelvecchio
Museum.
The collection, of which only a small part is usually on view, has
many points of interest for getting to know the culture of the XVIII
century and the archaeology of the Verona area.
From a noble family, Jacopo Muselli dedicated himself to research
into various scientific and humanist topics but, in particular, he carried
out in-depth studies into ancient numismatics and archaeology
and came into possession of parts of the collections of great Veronese
scholars such as Francesco Bianchini who lived in Rome for
a long time and Scipione Maffei who presented him with a set of
coins.
As well as growing his collection with purchases in the antiques
market, Muselli undertook the excavation of a necropolis from the
Roman age, not far from S. Giovanni Lupatoto, and found countless
tombs containing glassware of considerable quality.
31|03|2012 - 17|06|2012
Padovanino, i Liberi, Giulio Carpioni, Francesco Guardi e
molti altri.
An unusual encounter between museum collections and the antiques
market triggers a reflection on collecting and provides an
unmissable occasion for admiring and comparing works by great
Veneto artists.
The exhibition showcases around seventy works including paintings,
sculpture and bronzes by great artists including Jacopo da
Montagnana, Andrea Briosco, Alessandro Vittoria, Paolo Veronese,
Palma il Giovane, Padovanino, the Liberi, Giulio Carpioni, Francesco
Guardi and many others.
Patrons, collectors and the art market have always played a fundamental
role in determining the developments in artistic output, establishing
the fortune of its protagonists and delineating the destinies
of the individual works.
The formulation of the show is absolutely original with museum
collections being called on for the first time to dialogue with and
measure themselves against the “art market”.
rame, stagno, oro, argento,
avorio, vetro, lavagna,
legno ecc.).
presents a selection of over one hundred miniatures belonging to
the collections of the Museum of Medieval and Modern Art. The
use of this term refers to small-scale works, no greater than 20
centimetres in height and width according to the nineteenth century
convention, created on different supports (parchment, copper, tin,
gold, silver, ivory, glass, slate, wood, etc.).
The works exhibited, especially portraits, cover a time span that
ranges from the end of the Cinquecento to the end of the nineteenth
century, as indicated by the style and costumes of the people
depicted.
The selected pieces are of particular interest for their decorative
character, for the physiognomic vivacity of the subjects depicted
and for the attention to the details of the clothing and hairstyles
which offer a cross section of the fashions associated with the various
periods.
Robert Capa “Retrospettiva” 25|03|2012 - 16|09|2012
Riusciva
Seguono i reportage in Unione
Sovietica e in Israele, fino a quello in Indocina, dove perderà la
Faulkner, Matisse e Picasso.
“If your photographs
aren’t good
enough, you’re not
close enough” said
Robert Capa, one
of the most important
photographers
of the XX century,
describing a precise
– participant
and emotional –
way of understanding
photography
and reportage.
Capa tried to personalize
war by
grasping individual actions and close-ups, thereby putting sensibility
back at the centre of attention. The writer, John Steinbeck, a
great friend of the photographer, highlighted this capacity when he
wrote that Capa knew that you cannot photograph war because
above all it is an emotion, but he was able to photograph that emotion
by grasping it from close up: he was able to show the horror
of an entire people on the face of a child.
The show recounts Capa’s work on various war fronts in 98 dense
black and white images, ranging from the Japanese invasion of
China to the Second World War with the allied landings in Normandy
and the liberation of Paris. Then come his reportages from
the Soviet Union and Israel, and from Indochina where he lost his
life after hitting an anti-personnel mine of 25 May 1954. The show
concludes with portraits of some of Capa’s friends including such
renowned artists as Hemingway, Faulkner, Matisse and Picasso.
Pinacoteca Civica di Palazzo Chiericati
Vicenza
Vicenza’s Municipal Art Gallery has reopened a part of the north
wing of Palazzo Chiericati following building activities: the Roi rooms,
intended to host the works donated by Marquis Giuseppe Roi
to the city museums in April 2011. These three rooms with elegant
coffered ceilings, reclaimed in the attic, were inaugurated in May
three years after the death of the enlightened benefactor who had
already been supporting the city museums since 1988 with the
Foundation bearing his name. A catalogue – the sixth in the Pinacoteca
Civica’s series of scientific volumes – has been published to
accompany the new arrangement of the Roi bequest.
The one hundred or so pieces including painters (Pisanello, Maffei,
Canaletto, Tiepolo, Manet, and Picasso), drawings, engravings, a
numbered edition of Marco Polo’s Milione and a terracotta work by
Neri Pozza, were conserved by the donor in his homes in Vicenza
and Rome. The Roi collection reflects the character of its owner, a
cultured and refined collector, who selected works that would then
live with him. With the new setting, it was intended to reconstruct
the lived-in atmosphere of the domestic spaces with the creation for
this new section of the museum collections of a formula that differs
from the rest of the museographic path, a sort of “museum-house”.
FALSAREA
Falsi, falsari, equivoci e travisamenti nell’arte
Restaurato o falso?
Giovanni Anselmo, Jannis Kounellis,
Mario e Marisa Merz, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto,
o elementi biologici velocemente deteriorabili.
E vanno sostituiti,
quando si alterano
o di disperdono, i
semi, le foglie, i fiori,
la paglia, i mucchi
di terra che compongono
le opere di
Anselm Kiefer. Anche
per altre materie atipiche
manipolate dagli
artisti si impone
un continuo aggiornamento
scientifico
sul modo di preservarne
o sostituirne
parti degradate. Ciò
che rimane è ancora
l’opera che l’artista
aveva in mente?
FALSAREA
Fakes, counterfeiters, equivocations and misrepresentations in art
Restored or fake?
If everyone has a clear idea about what restoring an ancient or
modern work means, the restoration of certain contemporary art is
something completely different. Take Arte Povera for example. Giovanni
Anselmo, Jannis Kounellis, Mario e Marisa Merz, Giuseppe
Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Pino Pascali and others whom the
critic, Gaetano Celant, gathered around him in the mid sixties, often
work which great experimentalism where the materials are concerned.
The artists’ intention was not to create something that would be
“immortal” but, on the contrary, the production of “occasional” works
using plastic or biological elements that deteriorate quickly. They
also challenged the concept of the uniqueness and unrepeatability
of the work of art, to the point that their installations give rise to a
radical change in the exhibition venues which could no longer be
private houses or traditional museums, while the problem of restoration
is inherent in the artefacts. Faced with the deterioration of the
constituent elements of the works, the idea of “substitution” replaces
the idea of “conservation”. Anselmo’s provocation in Scultura che
mangia (1968, Sonnabend collection, New York), composed of two
blocks of stone that crush a head of real lettuce, requires daily replacement
while the fluorescent tubes of Merz must also be changed
when the neon gas content is exhausted. The seeds, leaves, flowers,
straw and piles of soil that make up the works of Anselm Kiefer must
also be replaced when they alter or are dispersed. Continuous scientific
updating is also required for the other atypical materials manipulated
by artists so that their deteriorated parts can be conserved or
substituted. Is what remains still the work that the artist had in mind?

della stampa fotografica e
Mauro Fiorese, autore e docente di
capolavori dei grandi maestri
della scena internazionale, il lavoro di
talenti nuovi ed emergenti con l’intento
di divulgare il valore della Fotografia
nell’arte e nel collezionismo contemporaneo
attraverso competenze altamente
Bassano del Grappa (VI)
“ADDIZIONE”
Claudio Brunello, artista di Bassano del
Grappa. Si presenta con un’originale
ed articolata tri-personale, con esposte
un centinaio di opere. L’artista bassanese
propone “ADDIZIONE”, con catalogo curato
dal grafico Tony Arduino. La mostra
si articola in tre importanti e noti siti bassanesi
per tutta l’Estate: De MARCHI Casa
Design, AURUM gioielli e l’OTTOCENTO
Simply Food.
Nato nel 1954, la sua formazione culturale
fino ai venti anni avviene a Torino.
Nel 1972 si diploma vetrinista. Nel 1974
avviene il trasferimento a Bassano del
Grappa dove tuttora risiede.
“ADDIZIONE”
Claudio Brunello, an artist from Bassano
del Grappa, is presented here with an original
and varied triple-personal exhibition
of around one hundred of his works. The
artist is proposing “ADDITION”, with the
catalogue designed by the graphic artist,
Tony Arduino, and with the exhibition
spread over three of the most important
and famous sites in Bassano for the entire
summer: De MARCHI Casa Design, AU-
RUM Jewellery and OTTOCENTO Simply
Food. Born in 1954, he was educated in
Turin until he was 20, where, in 1972 he
got his diploma as Window Dresser. In
1974 he moved to Bassano del Grappa,
where he still lives today. By combining
materials that are “dense” in traditional
functions, the artist pursues a form of highly
symbolic-conceptual post-production,
which enables him to transform the spaces
he chooses into surfaces that undergo
events/tales in a key of recovery and
rebirth, which, as it progresses, reveals a
true discovery.
elementi fondamentali della sua opera
il riferimento alle tematiche dell’interazione
sociale e urbana. A guidare il
Dorothea van der Koelen’s La Galleria
presents a solo exhibition dedicated to
the Belgian artist Arne Quinze. Born
drawings, paintings, and large-scale
installations. Recurring fundamentals
in his oeuvre are the use of different
types of wood, steel and fluorescent
Quinze is the vision of an idealistic
Fluida propone per la Venice Art
Night 2012 “intuAzioni” una rassegna
collettiva di artisti emergenti sul
tema dell’intuizione artistica. Fulminea
e dirompente, o lenta e ragionata,
ossessiva e persistente o inaspettata
e illuminante, l’intuizione artistica non
prevede regole. È una scintilla scaturita
dalla mente dell’artista che cerca
ogni via per palesarsi. Ognuno trova il
proprio metodo per fissare nel mondo
reale quanto gli frulla in testa. Non si
tratta ancora dell’opera finita, ma della
sua prima incarnazione essenziale.
intuAzioni vuol essere l’occasione per
un gruppo di artisti emergenti, attivi
a Venezia, di presentarsi mettendo a
nudo il proprio intimo approccio all’arte
attraverso azioni e lavori dal vivo.
Fluida is presenting “intuAzioni” during
Venice Art Night 2012. This is
a collective exhibition showcasing a
group of emerging artists working on
the theme of artistic intuition. Sudden
and disruptive or slow and reasoned,
obsessive and persistent or unexpected
and illuminating, artistic inspiration
knows no rules. It is a spark triggered
from the mind of artists seeking
every route for bringing their ideas
into the light. All of them find their
own way of transferring what goes on
in their head into the real world: not
yet a finished work, but more often the
first essential incarnation. intuAzioni is
intended to provide an opportunity for
a group of emerging artists working in
Venice to present themselves and bare
their intimate approach to art through
live action activities.
AMBIENTI
Mostra fotografica ed esposizione
tappeti in fibra vegetale.
L’idea di foto e tappeti AMBIENTI ci
collega direttamente alla Natura. Suggestivi
scatti fotografici si abbinano
ai tappeti della Collezione Ambienti,
materici e setosi, annodati a mano,
dai colori vegetali e realizzati in corteccia
d’albero. Nati da una filosofia
di nuova concezione, vengono da noi
proposti per la prima volta in esclusiva
ed in edizione limitata. Fortemente
ispirata al rispetto della Terra, è una
collezione contemporanea di tappeti
dal design italiano, personalizzabile,
adatta a vari ambienti. La collezione
richiama graficamente linee e forme
di intrecci di radici, geometrie di rocce,
incisioni rupestri, profondità di caverne,
ambienti urbani. Un percorso
visivo che ripropone in foto e in arte
AMBIENTI
Photography show and exhibition of
vegetable fibre carpets.
The idea of photographs and AMBIEN-
TI carpets is linked directly to Nature.
Evocative shots combine with carpets
from the Ambienti Collection: material
and silky in texture, hand-knotted, with
vegetable colours and made of tree
bark. The result of a newly conceived
philosophy, they are being proposed
exclusively by us for the first time in a
limited edition. Powerfully inspired by
respect for the Earth, this is a contemporary
collection of Italian-designed
carpets that can be customized and
adapted to various environments. The
collection graphically recalls the lines
and forms of interweaving roots, the
geometries of rocks, cave engravings,
the profundity of caverns and urban
environments. This visual itinerary reproposes
the suggestion of Nature in
Fabio Inverni, Servizio pubblico - 2009
olio su tela - cm 80x70
Fabio Inverni, nato a Firenze alla fine
degli anni ‘60, sviluppa sin da piccolo
un’innata passione per la pittura trasmessagli
dal padre, il pittore Francesco
Inverni. La mano dell’artista è meticolosa
e minuziosa nei minimi particolari
oggettivi.
delicato. In ogni quadro gli oggetti
emergono in primo piano con la “materia”
di cui sono fatti, colpendo il nostro
occhio che percepisce inevitabilmente
la poesia dei piccoli particolari. È una
visione nostalgica e romantica quella
che Fabio Inverni ci propone attraverso
le sue tele iperrealiste.
Right from his childhood, Fabio Inverni,
born in Florence at the end of the
sixties, developed an innate passion for
painting transmitted to him by his father,
the painter Francesco Inverni. The artist’s
hand is meticulous and detailed in
the minimum objective particulars. His
work is projected towards recollection:
the aged sheet or the mailbox as synonyms
for a past and for memories that
are still alive. In all his work the light
is crepuscular, aimed at softening the
chiaroscuro and rendering it delicate.
The objects in every painting emerge in
the foreground with the “material” they
are made of, striking our eye which inevitably
perceives the poetry of the smallest
detail. The vision proposed by Fabio
Inverni through his hyperrealist canvases
is a nostalgic and romantic one.
