THE ARDA VALLEY– Among vineyards and castles
It is the valley that stands in the eastern part of Piacenza area and borders on the province of
Parma, including the course of the Arda river and the Ongina, Stirone, Chero and Chiavenna
streams. It develops from the Po river to the Apennines among wonderful river landscapes, hills
cultivated with vineyards, evocative hill erosions of the natural parks, Roman excavations,
medieval villages, Renaissance towns and abbeys. The eastern zone of the valley, crossed now by
the Emilia road, was in the past covered by medieval pilgrims who, following the old Roman
consular road layout that coincided with the Francigena road, turned towards the pilgrimage
destinations. The higher part offers a road with hills, precipices and gullies, witness of the Pliocene
age when the sea lapped on the Apennines slopes and whales and fishes swam there, whose rests
can be found in the local grey and blue clays.
THE NURE VALLEY – An uncontaminated nature
A visit of this valley means to dip in an evocative nature, to discover itineraries covered in the past
by mules loaded with the oil of Genoa's merchants and the cereals of Piacenza's traders, to mingle
with the surrounding mountain territory, still full of local noble castles and stone houses similar to
forts and mills.
In the level area you can admire the most strategically important castles like Altoè and Grazzano,
where a characteristic village, now a very famous place for tourists, has been built.
In the Apennines sector you can lose yourself among peaks interrupted by rocky spurs, meadows
and woods rich in mushrooms and chestnuts. Here you can do interesting excursions towards lakes
of glacial origin, unique for the richness of flora and fauna.
THE TREBBIA VALLEY – landscapes of light and tastes
The large valley, that has always had a great importance as way out towards Liguria, extends along
all the Trebbia river course that winds for about 110 km. While the lower part is traditionally
dedicated to wine growing, the higher Trebbia valley, bordering on Liguria, shows off some
landscapes of extraordinary beauty. In these places, where the river water is still fit for swimming
and flows drawing tortuous meanders among the rocks, you can practice different sports in the
open air, from the easier excursionism to canoe and fishing.
THE TIDONE VALLEY – Old tastes and fabulous castles
It is the western valley of Piacenza's province; it divides the Emilian territory from the Lombard
area and is crossed by the homonymous stream.
For its strategic connection position between the Po Valley and Lombardy, it has been a bordering
and passage place since ancient times, testified by some protohistoric and Roman age finds, by the
various castles and the Romea road that crossed the valley.
The wide and sunny valley, with meadows and gentle hills cultivated with orchards and vineyards,
coppice forests and pine-woods in the higher part, promises quiet and relaxation and is ideal for
naturalistic excursions.
