Uppennino to live sport, Uppennino to live culture.
Snowshoeing with friends, skiing at night, a horse ride or an MTB adventure
surrounded by landscapes that make you really feel life, canoeing down the drops of a
gushing stream, thus becoming the accomplices of a fabulous natural environment …
But don't worry if you aren't too adventurous: a pair of golf shoes or walking boots
will be enough to make you feel naturally unique.
And don't forget your need to relax, celebrate with people: village fairs, folk music
played all along slopes, opera in a fascinating medieval borough, Latin drama with a
rich Roman town as background, meetings with authors at a film festival.
Or spending time with children, smiling at the funny shows of street artists:
colours and creativity from all over the world!
Capitolo terzo: Periodo Postglaciale.
Luigia d'Austria.
Ebbene, l'Aquila è tornata, insieme al Lupo, qui naturalmente.
la natura racconta
nature and its history
Chapter one: Placentianum (Middle Pliocene, 3.600 - 2.588 million years ago).
The sea withdrew and left behind dolphins, whales, crustaceans, corals, light-blue and goldenyellow
calanques, sulphur waters. Free admission: find your fossil, even Leonardo Da Vinci
appreciated them.
Chapter two: Ophiolites.
Popular superstition thought they had been made by the devil, actually they are simply magmatic
rocks emerged from the ocean. Some of these here, are so imposing that you will wish to see them
from all sides: if you find the rock excavated basin with alpine tritons, respect them.
Chapter three: Post glacial Period.
The region's only specimens of Dwarf Pines reflect themselves in the glacial origin lakes.
And then there are iron, copper, oil sites.
Longing for something less scientific?
Trails across pastures, woods, streams, surrounded by smooth or rugged landscapes. The bright,
bending rivers, seen from above, invite you to follow them, and to dive in.
Still wild valleys, as naturally unique as the first draft of a painting representing waterfalls amid
rocks and round pools at their feet.
At the time of Marie Louise of Austria, the royal eagle used to nest here, over one of those
waterfalls, on a rocky spur.
Well, the eagle is back, and so is the wolf, here, naturally.
secoli e millenni
centuries and millennia
Inaccessible places, where Ligurians and Romans hid themselves in castles and tower houses,
where the wild Boreca Valley still bears signs of the passage of Hannibal, up to the real battlefield,
in the valley crossed by the river Trebbia.
Right, the valley… where someone (who knows when) lost the only bronze liver belonging to an
Etruscan aruspex, which is now preserved in Farnese Palace Museum.
Moving southwards, the ever more rugged soil reveals the rich Veleja Romana, a Neolithic village
on the banks of the river Trebbia, Bronze and Iron age settlements, an altar for sacrifices, a
dolmen.
The mountains preserve memories of Longobardic kings, of lands donated to the monks to forget
centuries of anguish: that's how a very important monastery was born, and then, mysteriously,
vanished, erasing the name of a whole valley.
Columba, patron saint of Europe, was able to found his monastery, which aimed to safeguard
human knowledge; here Cicero, Plautus, Seneca and Virgilius were faithfully transcribed.
The different tracts of Via Francigena, are marked by rest areas for pilgrims, and saw the
construction of hospitalia and oratories, pure and precious Romanesque receptacles of faith.
Even very important families, fighting against each other, searched our Apennines, finally
choosing that rocky spur or that peak where to build some among the most beautiful castles and
boroughs in Italy, here, naturally.
Full moon night, untouched snow… a fun snowshoe walk with friends, or skiing at night down a
skiing if legs are strong enough.
And finally, after thaw, backpack on your shoulders, get ready for walks across woods and fords,
peaks, clearings and deserved pic-nics.
Some rock climbing – amid spurs, walls and chimneys – will lead the bravest to a Tibetan bridge
and to landscapes which will make you love your life more. Climbing the 12 steps of a stream,
stubborn and brave amid the rocks, will make you the accomplices of a powerful nature.
If you aren't really 'reckless', here you'll learn about outdoor experiences, orienteering, canoeing,
There are circulating events, music spreading from the nicest mountain and hill locations:
Valtidone Festival, with Classical and Ethnic/Jazz music by international artists, and Appennino
Folk Festival, with Europe's most important traditional repertoires.
Celtic sounds will be performed in Bobbio, to celebrate Saint Columba's Irish origins.
Or… there is Opera, performed in the fascinating borough of Vigoleno; while the ancient Veleja
Romana is the background for Latin drama; and there is also 'Teatro Natura', in the woods of the
provincial Park … you can't save on scenography!
And even more magic is available and it is characterised by juvenile exuberance, amazement and
smiles: the colourful performances of the Youth International Festival and the eccentricities of
the Street Artists Festival, with artists from all over the world.
famosa e potreste quasi saltare queste righe.
DOP cheeses: our cuisine is famous and you might nearly skip these lines.
But…
But eating (without paying in Pound Sterling!) is totally different for us.
When you usually go in the cellar to check if 'pancetta', 'coppa', salami are ready; or the kitchen is
at a few metres from the table and your host enters carrying a plate of 'anolini di stracotto'
(stuffed pasta), of macaroni especially made with a knitting needle, of venison or escargots, then
eating becomes an ode to happiness and the spirit is full of gratitude.
Let's applaud the 'mariola' (a type of cured meat), 'tortelli', figs and chocolate cakes, the potato
the products of the wood… and all the other courses, with no exceptions.
le valli
VAL D'ARDA – Tra vigneti e castelli
VAL NURE – Una natura incontaminata
naturalistico.
THE ARDA VALLEY– Among vineyards and castles
It is the valley that stands in the eastern part of Piacenza area and borders on the province of
Parma, including the course of the Arda river and the Ongina, Stirone, Chero and Chiavenna
streams. It develops from the Po river to the Apennines among wonderful river landscapes, hills
cultivated with vineyards, evocative hill erosions of the natural parks, Roman excavations,
medieval villages, Renaissance towns and abbeys. The eastern zone of the valley, crossed now by
the Emilia road, was in the past covered by medieval pilgrims who, following the old Roman
consular road layout that coincided with the Francigena road, turned towards the pilgrimage
destinations. The higher part offers a road with hills, precipices and gullies, witness of the Pliocene
age when the sea lapped on the Apennines slopes and whales and fishes swam there, whose rests
can be found in the local grey and blue clays.
THE NURE VALLEY – An uncontaminated nature
A visit of this valley means to dip in an evocative nature, to discover itineraries covered in the past
by mules loaded with the oil of Genoa's merchants and the cereals of Piacenza's traders, to mingle
with the surrounding mountain territory, still full of local noble castles and stone houses similar to
forts and mills.
In the level area you can admire the most strategically important castles like Altoè and Grazzano,
where a characteristic village, now a very famous place for tourists, has been built.
In the Apennines sector you can lose yourself among peaks interrupted by rocky spurs, meadows
and woods rich in mushrooms and chestnuts. Here you can do interesting excursions towards lakes
of glacial origin, unique for the richness of flora and fauna.
THE TREBBIA VALLEY – landscapes of light and tastes
The large valley, that has always had a great importance as way out towards Liguria, extends along
all the Trebbia river course that winds for about 110 km. While the lower part is traditionally
dedicated to wine growing, the higher Trebbia valley, bordering on Liguria, shows off some
landscapes of extraordinary beauty. In these places, where the river water is still fit for swimming
and flows drawing tortuous meanders among the rocks, you can practice different sports in the
open air, from the easier excursionism to canoe and fishing.
THE TIDONE VALLEY – Old tastes and fabulous castles
It is the western valley of Piacenza's province; it divides the Emilian territory from the Lombard
area and is crossed by the homonymous stream.
For its strategic connection position between the Po Valley and Lombardy, it has been a bordering
and passage place since ancient times, testified by some protohistoric and Roman age finds, by the
various castles and the Romea road that crossed the valley.
The wide and sunny valley, with meadows and gentle hills cultivated with orchards and vineyards,
coppice forests and pine-woods in the higher part, promises quiet and relaxation and is ideal for
naturalistic excursions.
15th century altar. In the bedrooms and in the Jr. Suite, all bearing female flower
names, guests may breathe the past, thanks to the 19th century furniture and
wrought iron beds. Guests are awoken by the delicious scent of pastries, biscuits,
bread and jams made from seasonal fruit, while the garden gives the scent of
daffodils or white roses in spring.
tradizioni, i sapori genuini.
Castelvetro Piacentino, Cortemaggiore, Monticelli d'Ongina, San Pietro in Cerro e Villanova sull'Arda.
Po river and dine route through the low piacenza plain
In the area of Piacenza Province, among the different climatic and morphological realities, we meet the foggy low plain of the Po river
with its tributary streams and poplar plantations: we were born here, crossing the coastal municipalities of the Po river with the
traditions and cultures that all the territory is permeated with. The traveller who covers this itinerary with the intention of dedicating
himself to a tempting shopping is attracted by the strong feeling of identity which one can breath along the route. Not only castles or
coastal villages, nor rows of poplar trees along the embankments, but a slow and balanced dipping in a mix of all these things:
excellent wrapping sausages and cheeses, tasted after visiting the castles and the historic city centre or riding along the
embankments… We just would like to express this: history, territory, traditions, genuine tastes. The new sensitivity with whom the
modern tourist-traveller approaches some realities - traditionally different from the familiar ones -, may find a special path along the
food and dine itinerary of the low Piacenza plain. The about 80 kilometres route develops circularly along the villages behind the wide
Po meanders: Besenzone, Caorso, Castelvetro Piacentino, Monticelli d'Ongina, San Pietro in Cerro e Villanova sull'Arda.
collinari.
Wine and dine route through the hills of piacenza
A tile dated 1330 and preserved in the Museo Civico di Palazzo Farnese in Piacenza reports the following epigraph in the vulgar tongue:
“Signori vu sie tuti gli benvegnù / e zascaun chi che vera sera ben / vegno e ben recevu” (Ladies and Gentlemen, you are all welcome here
and everybody who comes will be welcomed and accommodated). Piacenza and its province represent an authentic territory where the
values of the quiet living and amusement have large room, cheered by a simple but tasty food and by well known guaranteed wines. Not
only medieval castles or villages, nor ancient monasteries and magnificent abbeys, nor a quick taste of some products, but a slow
plunging into all this: a specialty tasted slowly with a glass of local wine after visiting a Romanic parish church or a late roman tower,
maybe rich in legends and histories that have been handing on for years; in short, an inseparable whole of history, territory and
traditions. The course of the Wine and Dine route through the hills of Piacenza develops from the boundaries between the Northwest
ward province of Pavia, and the Southeast ward province of Parma, and crosses the hilly strip of the Piacenza area, where you can meet
the Tidone Valley, with its ancient tastes and marvellous castles, the Trebbia Valley, with its light and water views, the Nure Valley, with
its uncontaminated nature and the Arda Valley with its vineyards and attracting hilly erosions.
A duchy of castles
In the duchy of Parma and Piacenza, history, art and gastronomy have always marked the land that gently declines towards the Po. Time
seems to stop and not run away like the green spring, the summer sun, the autumn mist and the white blanket snow. Time flows leaving
all the things unchanged.
Today, the treasures of the taste still increase the charm and the reference to the noble tables prepared for the “Ricordanze di Sapori”: the
many DOP white and red wines of Piacenza's hills, the coppa piacentina and the salame of Felino, the ham of Parma, Zibello culatello
ham, shoulder ham of San Secondo, Parmigiano Reggiano and Grana Padano.
With the Ducato card, on sale in ticket offices of the castles for 2 euros, the visitors deserve, for one year, a discount of 1 euro for the
entrance ticket in all the castles of the Association Castles of the duchy of Parma and Piacenza in addiction to a reduction in restaurants,
hotels, local museums and the Fidenza Village Outlet Shopping.
