Brillante carriera, forte personalità, pieno
d’entusiasmo, alla guida di uno dei
più importanti alberghi del mondo, un
job da sogno… Tutto questo è Hans
Olbertz, General Manager dell’albergo
da “Mille e una notte” situato nel cuore di Abu
Dhabi, the Emirates Palace, albergo a 7 stelle, rino-
mato gruppo alberghiero di lusso Kempinski.
Da quando tempo svolge il ruolo di General Manager
all’Emirates Palace?
Sono passate 8 settimane. E’ uno dei posti più interessanti,
se non il più importante in tutta la mia carriera
alberghiera. L’Emirates Palace è l‘icona negli
Emirati Arabi.

Ci può descrivere un mese vissuto da General
Manager?
In questo breve periodo il nostro albergo ha ospitato
le delegazioni ufficiali e le personalità di calibro
come George Bush, il Presidente degli USA, Nicolas
Sarkosy, il Presidente della Francia, Gerhard
Schroeder, Microsoft Meeting con Bill Gates, il Presidente
d’Islanda, il Presidente di Djibouti, European
PGA Golfer con 120 persone, Elton John che ha fatto
il concerto da vivo con 13.000 persone sulla
spiaggia d’albergo, Tony Blair, la Regina di Giordania.
Abbiamo inaugurato la mostra The Arts of Islam,
abbiamo ospitato la Conferenza sull’Energia, l’Economic
Forum, il Presidente dell’Egitto, il Re di Malaysia,
il Presidente di Giordania, il Re di Swaziland
e l’ex-Presidente degli USA, George Bush senior .
Il suo percorso professionale?
Ho lavorato per più di 30 anni con il gruppo InterContinental
e per me svolgere oggi questo ruolo presso
L’Emirates Palace è il culmine della mia carriera.
Ho lavorato per l’InterContinental a Hong Kong, a
Bangkok in Tailandia, e dal 1988 al 1990 in Abu Dhabi
che in passato era l’albergo ufficiale del governo;
mentre adesso questo ruolo è stato assegnato all’Emirates
Palace. E poi ancora a Francoforte, in Stuttgart
, in Amburgo, in Egitto, in Giordania, in Palestina,
in Grecia (responsabile per Turchia, Cipro, Malta),
a Vienna dove dirigevo tutto il territorio dell’Europa
Centrale e Orientale.
Quando ha iniziato la sua carriera?
A 16 anni facendo uno stage,
come cameriere e cuoco.
Ho percorso tutti i ruoli che la
carriera alberghiera offre, dal
cameriere e cuoco, passando
poi per tutti gli uffici amministrativi.
Ho ottenuto il diploma
in Management d’albergo
presso la Scuola Alberghiera
a Bad Reichenhall
in Germania, sono laureato
come Economo Alberghiero
presso la School of Hotel Administration
per Business
Management a Berlino. Infine,
ho continuato a seguire
gli studi presso la Cornell
University a New York che
prepara i leader per la nostra
industria.
Nonostante il lungo percorso
lavorativo, ho solo 55 anni, e
sono ancora giovane!
Quali sono le cose più
esclusive che offre l’Emirates
Palace?
L’albergo stesso è molto esclusivo.
Per chi cerca il riposo e vuole rilassarsi, è il posto
giusto. Alcune location ed alcuni servizi meritano, in
modo particolare, di essere menzionati: le 2 piscine

esclusive solo per gli ospiti, ognuna
con il proprio ristorante; 4 campi da
tennis ed il club dedicato ai bambini.
Emirates Palace gode di un’enorme
spiaggia che si estende per 1,3 km.
Poi offre una straordinaria esperienza
culinaria, tra i ristoranti più rinomati il
Sayad, una fusione Pacifica tra l‘Asia
e il Medio Oriente. Poi il ristorante italiano
Mezzaluna con il suo chef Luigi
che prepara le prelibatezze italiane
agli ospiti dell’albergo. I ristoranti sono
famosi anche per la loro architettura,
il loro design interno e le decorazioni
particolari. E’ come un palazzo
con tanti swarovski e alti soffitti.
Poi abbiamo anche il ristorante libanese
Diwan L’Auberge e il ristorante
iraniano Anar. L’immagine fiabesca
dell’albergo è arricchita all’esterno
con “ giochi d’acqua”. Le fontane e le
cupole di notte cambiano colore.
L’albergo poi ha una meravigliosa
Spa realizzata in stile marocchino
con particolari di design tailandese
e 20 terapisti provenienti dalla
Tailandia. La Spa ha 7 suites private
con le docce a vapore,
hamman, jacuzzi e lo spazio riservato alla vendita
dei prodotti della bellezza scelti con particolari criteri
della produzione naturale.
La specialità dell’albergo sono “Rolls Royce Royal
Golf Package”. Prenotando l’albergo con questa
formula gli ospiti vengono portati dall’aeroporto in
albergo con un servizio Rolls Royce.. Poi si spostano
sempre con il Rolls Royce all’Abu Dhabi Golf
Club, possono giocare a golf utilizzando le macchine
da campo golf griffato Rolls Royce.
L’albergo è in questo momento impegnato anche in
un altro progetto che sarà pronto tra qualche mese,
la costruzione del porto marino nella loro baia con i
posti parcheggio per più di 170 barche.
I visitatori possono passare il tempo in Havana Club,
Cigar Lunge Bar oppure in Embassy Club, una vera
esclusività dell’albergo aperto solo un mese fa. Embassy
Club è una conosciuta location notturna a
Londra, adesso anche in Abu Dhabi in joint-ventures.
I Club di questo genere esistono solo negli alberghi
a 5 stelle. La serata inizia nel club con una
cena preparata dallo Chef dei livelli di Michellen
Star. Verso la mezzanotte il locale si trasforma in un
lounge privato con tanta musica disco fino le 4 di
mattina, è fortemente selettivo, solo per i propri
membri e gli ospiti dell’albergo. E’ aperto durante il
weekend locale, cioè le sere di giovedì, venerdì e
sabato. Nell’albergo lavorano 47 nazionalità. Il numero
dei nostri dipendenti è circa 2000. Ci sono 394
stanze, di cui 92 suites. Abbiamo 8 suites riservate
solo ai Capi Stato.
Come definisce l’Emirates Palace?
Un colosso che Ti lascia senza il respiro,
eccitante, emozionante, puro
lusso, il migliore servizio e
standard, il miglior

luogo dove stare. Abu Dhabi aspira a diventare
un luogo dell’incontro della cultura mondiale e
l’Emirates Palace ospita una mostra dedicata
proprio al progetto Saadiyat Island “Isola della felicità” in
Abu Dhabi, una isola su cui si sta costruendo un intero
complesso multiculturale.
Quando costa la camera nell’Emirates Palace, dal
minimo al massimo?
La suite più cara costa circa 15.000 USD mentre la
camera semplice parte da 300 USD. Dipende sempre
dalla tipologia della stanza. Il nostro albergo è stato
costruito in 3 anni, circa 20.000 persone eranno
coinvolte nel periodo della costruzione ed è l’albergo
costruito con i costi più alti del mondo di circa 2,2 mld
USD. Oggi svolge un importante ruolo, è l’ albergo
governativo che ospita tutte le delegazioni ufficiali da
tutto il mondo. ■

An interview with Hans Olbertz,
General Manager of the Emirates
Palace Hotel, Abu Dhabi
Abrilliant career, a strong personality, full of
enthusiasm and manager of one of the
world’s major hotels. A dream job…
All that represents Hans Olbertz, General Manager
of “Thousand and One Nights” style Hotel located
in the heart of Abu Dhabi. The 7 star Emirates
Palace Hotel belongs to the renowned Kempinski
luxury hotel chain.
How long have you been covering the role of
General Manager at the Emirates Palace Hotel?
I have been here now for five weeks and two days.
It is definitely one of the most exciting places if not
the most exciting place I have ever worked in my
whole hotel career.
The Emirates Palace is the icon of the United Arab
Emirates. So how is one month in the Emirates
Palace of General Manager. Well, the hotel has hosted
official delegations and personalities such as US
President George Bush, President of France Nicolas
Sarkozy, Microsoft Meeting with Bill Gates, the President
of Iceland, the President of Djibouti, the European
PGA Golfer with 120 people, Elton John who
gave a live concert on the hotel beach with 13.000
people, Gerhard Schroeder, ex UK Prime Minister
Tony Blair and the Queen of Jordan Ranya. We had
the Opening of the Conference of “The Arts of Islam”
exhibition, hosted the Energy Conference, the Economic
Forum.
The President of Egypt, the King of Malaysia, the
President of Jordan, the King of Swaziland and former
US President George Bush senior.
How was your professional career?
I worked with Inter-Continental Group for over 30
years and then to have the opportunity to join the
Emirates Palace was the highlight of my career. I formerly
worked in places like Hong Kong, Bangkok in
Thailand and from 1988 to 1990 in Abu Dhabi. The
Intercontinental Hotel used to be the Government
Hotel at that time. Now since 3,5 years of the Emirates
Palace, this is the official Government Guests
Palace Hotel. I also worked in Frankfurt, Stuttgart,
Hamburg, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Greece (also responsible
for Turkey, Cyprus and Malta) and Vienna
where I was responsible for Central and Eastern Europe.
And then I went to Seoul in Korea.
When did your career start?
I started when I was 16 as a waiter and as a cook, I
did my internship. I started from scratch. I then went
through all the steps within the hotel industry, from
the roles of waiter and cook to all administration positions.
I graduated with a Diploma in Hotel Management
at the Hotel School in Bad Reichenhall,

Germany and obtained a Diploma as a Hotel Economist
at the School of Hotel Administration for
Business Management in Berlin.
I then continued my studies at the Cornell
University in New York, an institution well-known for
providing excellent training for leaders/senior
executives in the hospitality industry. In spite of my
long working experience I am only 55 and still
young!
What are the most exclusive location in the hotel
and most exclusive services offered by the
Emirates Palace Hotel?
I think the hotel itself is very exclusive, just mindblowing.
If you really want to chill out and relax, you
have our two exclusive swimming pools, each of
which includes its own restaurant, for the exclusive
use of registered guests, four tennis courts and a
special children’s club. The Emirates Palace is
located on a 1.3 km stretch
of private sandy beach. As
well, it offers an amazing
culinary experience, we
have two absolutely rewarded
restaurants, the Sayad –
Pacific Rim Seafood. It is a
fusion of Asia with the Middle
East concept. Then we
have the best Italian Restaurant
Mezzaluna, with its Italian
chef Luigi. And it is really
fantastic. It is not that you
only enjoy the fantastic
food. I think these two
restaurants you have to see
also from the architectural
point of view, their design, it
is like a palace with the high ceiling and Swarovski
chandeliers. Then we have a fabulous Lebanese
Restaurant Diwan L’Auberge and the Iranian
Restaurant Anar. The fairy-tale atmosphere at the
hotel is increased by the “water play of the fountains”
around the hotel changing the colours in the
night. The domes are changing their colours as
well. Something really exquisite we have is the
Anantara Spa which is Thai Group.
It is made in Moroccan design and Thai style decorations.
We have 20 therapists from Thailand. It is
composed of seven treatment rooms equipped
with steam showers, hammam and Jacuzzi
whirlpool baths and also includes a special area devoted
to the sale of Spa’s own brand of exclusive
natural products. The hotel’s flagship is the “Rolls
Royce Royal Golf Package”.
By booking this package the guests will enjoy a
Rolls Royce transfer from the airport to the hotel for
the accommodation and then will be driven in Rolls
Royce to the Abu Dhabi Golf Club where, once
again, they will use the special Rolls Royce-designed
golf carts. In a few months another exclusive
facility will be completed, the marina port in the hotel
bay that will include a parking lot for over 170
boats. Visitors can spend their time at the Havana
Club, Cigar Lounge Bar or at the Embassy Club, a
unique place opened just one month ago.
The Embassy Club is very well-known night spot in
London and it has now been joint-ventured with
Abu Dhabi Emirates Palace. Only 5 star hotels host
clubs like this. The evening starts in the club with a

fine dinner prepared by
Michelin-Star Chef. At
about midnight the
restaurant turns into a private
lounge with disco
music playing until 4 am.
It is very selective and only
reserved to its own
members and registered
guests. It is open during
the local weekends, that
is Thursday, Friday and
Saturday in the evenings.
A staff of 47 nationalities
is employed at the hotel.
The number of our dependants
is about 2000.
The hotel has 394 rooms
among which 92 suites and 8 Rulers suites reserved to Heads of State.
How would you define the Emirates Palace?
Overwhelming, breathtaking, exciting, like one thousand and one night, pure luxury,
the ultimate service and standard, the best place to be. Abu Dhabi aims at
becoming the meeting place of global culture. The Emirates Palace is now hosting
an exhibition of the project Saadiyat Island, “island of happiness”, in Abu
Dhabi, an island where a complete multicultural hub is being developed.
How much does a room at the Emirates Palace cost, from the lowest to the
highest rates?
The most expensive suite is about 15.000 USD while the simplest rooms start
from 300 USD. It depends on the type of the room.
It took 3 years to build this hotel, about 20 thousand people have been involved
and about 2.2 billion USD have been spent, the highest sum ever spent in the
world. Today it plays a prominent role: it is the government hotel hosting all the
official delegations coming from all over the world. ■
