ALLA CASERMA MASCHERONI UNA MARATONA MUSICALE DI TRENTA PIANISTI ACCENNAVA DECEMBER 16, 2011. IT WAS AN ICY WINTER NIGHT. AT CASERMA MASCHERONI, A MUSIC MARATHON PLAYED BY 30 PIANISTS WAS THE PRELUDE TO PIANO CITY MILANO. IL PRELUDIO DI PIANO CITY MILANO. Qualche mese dopo, a maggio 2012, con i Piano Twelve, Vinicio Capossela e un pianoforte bagnato, s’inaugurava la prima edizione della manifestazione. Era la prima volta che tanti cittadini aprivano le proprie case per ospitare un concerto e invitare i milanesi a partecipare a un nuovo tipo di ascolto e socialità. Allo stesso modo negli anni siamo andati alla ricerca di luoghi nuovi e inconsueti per raccontare la città: grazie all’immaginazione i pianoforti sono saliti sui tram e sui tetti, sono scesi in strada sulla piano bici e i battelli hanno suonato navigando sui navigli. Quest’anno, ancora una volta, i pianoforti invaderanno case, cortili, stazioni, tram, barche, musei, parchi e scuole, trasformando la città in un unico grande palcoscenico a cielo aperto. A few months later, in May, 2012, Piano Twelve, Vinicio Capossela and a “rain-soaked” piano opened the first Piano City Milano event. For the first time ever, many citizens opened the door of their homes to host a concert and invited the people of Milan to enjoy a new kind of listening and socializing experience. Following the same method, through the years we wandered around town looking for new and unusual ways to describe the city: thanks to this vision, pianos got on trams and climbed up roofs, they rode through town on piano-bikes and boats played music as they sailed along the Navigli. Once again this year, pianos will take over homes, courtyards, train stations, trams, boats, museums, parks and schools, and they will turn Milan into a single, huge open-air stage. Should it rain, the opening event will be postponed to Saturday night, same time, same place. Dopo “Le Piano Africain”, Ludovico Einaudi passa il testimone a Hauschka. Con un organico che oltre ai pianoforti conta anche fender rhodes e celeste, il concerto sarà suonato su un palco disegnato ad hoc per l’evento, con luci e strutture volumetriche che faranno da contrappunto alla musica. Ancora una volta Piano City Milano si apre con una composizione originale dedicata alla città, nel cuore di Parco Sempione: un viaggio musicale ispirato all’Esposizione Universale del 1906 che si tenne a Milano proprio nell’area intorno all’Arena Civica. L’immagine simbolo dell’esposizione celebrava l’apertura del traforo transalpino del Sempione, completato proprio nel 1906, e da cui il parco omonimo prende il nome, rendendo possibile la prima linea ferroviaria diretta tra Milano e Parigi. Da qui l’idea della composizione di Hauschka suddivisa in tre parti di venti minuti ciascuna: Arco della Pace, Sempione, Parigi. After “Le Piano Africain”, Ludovico Einaudi passes the baton on to Hauschka. With an ensemble that, together with the pianos, also includes a Fender Rhodes and a celesta, the concert will pe performed on a stage that has been especially designed for this event, with lights and volumetric structures that will act as a counterweight to the music. Once again, Piano City Milano starts off with an original composition dedicated to the city of Milan in the heart of Parco Sempione: a musical journey inspired by the 1906 World Fair that was held in Milan in this same area, right next to the Arena Civica. The Exposition’s symbolic poster celebrated the opening of the trans-Alpine Simplon (Sempione) Tunnel, which the park is named after. The Tunnel was completed in the same year as the Fair, 1906, and it made it possible for the first time ever to link Milan and Paris by direct railway. Hence Hauschka’s idea of dividing his composition into three 20-minutes parts: Arco della Pace, Sempione, Paris. HAUSCHKA Compositore tedesco, Hauschka è uno dei musicisti contemporanei più influenti degli ultimi anni. Specializzato nel pianoforte preparato, lavora sul proprio strumento aggiungendo alle corde materiali che vanno dalla plastica, all’alluminio, fino a palline da ping pong, gomma, pezzetti di legno, etc. A German composer, Hauschka is one of the most influential contemporary musicians of the last few years. He specializes in prepared pianos and works on his instrument by adding to the regular strings a range of materials that go from plastic to aluminum to ping-pong balls, rubber, shreds of wood and so on. CELESTA La celesta è uno strumento musicale a tastiera dal suono molto armonioso e argentino. È stata utilizzata da musicisti rock e pop come Frank Sinatra, Velvet Underground, Beatles, Pink Floyd. The celesta is a keyboard operated musical instrument that has a very melodious and silvery sound. It has been featured in the music of rock and pop artists such as Frank Sinatra, Velvet Underground, The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Pink Floyd. FENDER RHODES Il Fender Rhodes è un particolare tipo di pianoforte usato spesso nella musica jazz e rock a partire dagli anni cinquanta. Produce un suono molto caratteristico, con un contrasto tra suono dolce e duro, che i musicisti più esperti sanno sfruttare per creare esecuzioni molto espressive. The Fender Rhodes is a peculiar type of piano that has often been employed in jazz and rock music since the 1950s. Thanks to the contrast between softer and harder tones, it gives off a very characteristic sound that expert musicians know how to put to good use to create suggestive performances. DISKLAVIER È un pianoforte high-tech che è in grado di riprodurre perfettamente l’azione del pianista. Connesso alla rete, Disklavier può essere suonato in remoto da un pianista che si trova, ad esempio, all’altro capo del pianeta.
