A long promenade with bars, big cafés and<br />
discotheques, the “Lungomare Argentina”<br />
is the pride of this locality. In the first years<br />
of the 5th century, a religious man named<br />
Ampelio landed on these coasts and brought<br />
some stones of date-palms. Maybe<br />
thanks to this person too Bordighera will<br />
take its name of “Queen of Date-palms”.<br />
The medieval past of the town lives again<br />
in the alleys and in the small places of the<br />
charming historic centre, which we can<br />
enter through three passages: Porta del<br />
Capo, Porta Soprana , Porta Sottana. To see<br />
the Immacolata’s church, the Bicknel Museum,<br />
Villa Regina Margherita.<br />

dei Fiori: le palme si contendono il territorio con gli<br />
alberi di limoni, aranci e mandarini, mentre le bougainvillee<br />
si arrampicano sui muri. Bordighera è infatti famosa<br />
per le sue palme: svettano a centinaia, delle più<br />
diverse specie, e diffondono uno splendore abesco e<br />
orientaleggiante sulla città. Le palme più famose sono<br />
le Phoenix dactylifera, la palma da dattero, introdotta,<br />
secondo la tradizione, dall’anacoreta Ampelio. Ed<br />
è proprio a Sant’Ampelio, patrono di Bordighera, che<br />
è dedicata una piccola chiesa costruita sugli scogli, nel<br />
promontorio più meridionale della Liguria e dell’Italia<br />
settentrionale. Ed è proprio dal mare che viene la<br />
fortuna della città, che anche per il 2010, come già per<br />
gli anni precedenti, ha ottenuto la Bandiera Blu per il<br />
mare pulito.<br />
Bordighera, come Sanremo, fu una delle mete preferite<br />
dagli inglesi, che costruirono ville, alberghi, un circolo<br />
