E' durato circa mezz'ora 

il primo incontro del premier 

Enrico Letta con il presidente 

americano Barack Obama. Il colloquio, 

a margine dei lavori del 

G8, si è svolto nel patio di fronte 

al lodge che ospita la delegazione 

Usa, nella 'zona rossa' del resort a 

Lough Erne, in Irlanda del Nord. 

Obama ha accolto Letta stringendogli 

la mano, per poi salutare 

la delegazione composta, per 

l'Italia, dall'ambasciatore italiano 

a Londra, Pasquale Terracciano 

e dal consigliere diplomatico 

della Presidenza del Consiglio, 

Armando Varricchio. 

LETTA INCONTRA 

CAMERON, POI ANCHE 

BILATERALE CON ABE - Il 

presidente del Consiglio italiano, 

Enrico Letta, sta incontrando a 

margine dei lavori del G8 il primo 

ministro Gb, David Cameron. 

Dopo il bilaterale con il prermier 

Uk, Letta incontrerà il collega del 

giappone, Shinzo Abe. 

OBAMA A LETTA, 

PORTERO' LAVORO SU TAV- 

OLO G8 - Barack Obama intende 

porre la questione della lotta alla 

disoccupazione, in particolare 

di quella giovanile, sul tavolo 

del G8 con un suo intervento su 

questo tema. E' quanto riferiscono 

fonti italiane presenti al summit, 

secondo cui l'argomento è stato 

trattato durante la bilaterale fra il 

premier italiano e Obama. 

Nel corso del colloquio 

Obama-Letta, riferiscono le 

stesse fonti, il presidente Usa ha 

"condiviso" la preoccupazione del 

premier italiano per l'alta disoccupazione, 

sottolineando quanto 

sia importante essere consapevoli 

delle dimensioni e della gravità 

del problema per affrontarlo e 

tentare di risolverlo. Per questo, 

spiegano fonti italiane, "ne vuole 

parlare al tavolo del summit". 

Durante la bilaterale, si è anche 

parlato dell'accordo commerciale 

Usa-Ue. 

UE-USA: OBAMA, 

BENE NEGOZIATI, NO A 

TENTAZIONE RIBASSO - "Abbiamo 

resistito alla tentazione 

di un accordo al ribasso pur di 

avere un accordo". Lo ha detto 

il presidente Usa, Barak Obama, 

in una conferenza stampa dopo 

l'incontro con i vertici e i leader 

Ue in cui è stato dato il via ufficiale 

ai negoziati per l'accordo 

di libero scambio Ue-Usa. Un incontro 

"eccellente", ha aggiunto. 

OBAMA, LIBERO 

SCAMBIO VALE CENTINAIA 

MIGLIAIA POSTI - L'accordo di 

libero scambio Usa-Ue - che oggi 

ha registrato il via libera all'avvio 

dei negoziati - vale "centinaia di 

migliaia di posti di lavoro da una 

parte all'altra dell'oceano". Lo ha 

detto il presidente Usa, Barack 

Obama. Già oggi il volume degli 

scambi e investimenti Usa-Ue 

sostiene 13 milioni di posti. 

LETTA, MEGLIO DI 

COSI' NON POTEVA ANDARE 

- Con Obama è andata "molto 

bene, davvero molto bene". Così 

Enrico Letta, a margine del G8 risponde 

a proposito della bilateral 

con il presidente Usa. "Finora, 

meglio di così non poteva 

andare", ha aggiunto il premier 

relativamente all'andamento del 

summit. 

G8: CONSOLIDA- 

MENTO BILANCIO LEGATO 

A ECONOMIE PAESI - Il ritmo 

"del consolidamento di bilancio 

dovrebbe essere differenziato 

in base alle differenti situazioni 

delle nostre economie nazionali". 

Lo dichiarano i leader del G8. 

ONDATA DI CALORE FINO A GIOVEDI' CON ADE 

ROMA - E' previsto un 

aumento del caldo per i prossimi 

giorni: "fino a giovedì Ade, 

l'anticiclone responsabile della 

prima ondata di caldo della stagione 

aumenterà la sua potenza", 

fa sapere Antonio Sanò, direttore 

del portale "IlMeteo.it". 

"Il prossimo weekend, a parte 

qualche temporale sul Nordest, 

sarà soleggiato e mite, non oltre 

i 30 gradi", aggiunge Sanò. Da 

domani dall'Africa giungerà aria 

ancor più calda: "martedì, mercoledì 

e giovedì si supereranno 

anche i 35 gradi su Bologna, 

Firenze, Napoli, Roma, Bari, e 

sul resto del sud, con qualche 

grado in meno solo lungo le 

coste". Sanò poi sottolinea che 

"Ade mollerà la presa solo in 

parte nelle prossime settimane, 

con un calo delle temperature 

che si registrerà solo al Nord 

e al Centro. Al Sud il caldo 

proseguirà incontrastato per tutto 

il Mese".

Barack Obama said he intends 

to discuss unemployment, especially 

as it affects young people, 

in a speech at the G8 summit 

in Northern Ireland this week, 

according to Italian sources 

there Monday. The sources said 

that Obama and Letta went 

over the rising rate of joblessness 

in Italy, the eurozone and 

elsewhere in the industrialized 

world. Letta has made fixing 

youth unemployment a keystone 

of his premiership, pushing the 

issue at several EU meetings 

since he assumed the head of the 

government in April. Leaders 

from the world’s eight biggest 

economies this week are also 

scheduled to tackle economic 

growth and fighting tax evasion, 

while Syria’s conflict is set to 

dominate the gathering. 

According to Italian 

delegates, Obama told Letta in 

their meeting that he was “very 

concerned about the situation in 

Syria,” especially about “the use 

of chemical weapons”. 

On Thursday the 

Obama administration cited the 

use of chemical weapons by the 

Syrian government as justification 

for deciding to supply 

military support to rebel forces. 

All eyes are thus on 

Obama and Russian leader 

Vladimir Putini, who has continued 

to support the Bashar Assad 

regime and defy pleas to cease 

from the US and the international 

community. 

Pope Francis wrote 

to the summit’s host, British 

Prime Minister David Cameron, 

calling on G8 leaders to work 

towards a ceasefire in Syria and 

to bring all parties involved in 

the conflict to the negotiating 

table. 

Before arriving at the 

summit, Putin said in London 

that no weapons should be provided 

to rebels “who are eating 

the internal organs of enemies”, 

referring to a recent video 

showing a rebel apparently 

cutting out the heart and liver 

of a Syrian soldier and biting 

into the heart. As for the topic 

of tax evasion, Italian Economy 

Minister Fabrizio Saccomanni 

presented a foretaste of his 

country’s position in Rome. 

The government, he 

said, remained committed to 

waging war on rampant tax 

evasion, adding it was necessary 

for “social justice”. But he also 

stressed that the tax authorities 

had to account for honest people 

who were having trouble paying 

tax bills as Italy struggles with 

its longest recession in over 

20 years. Tax collectors for the 

Equitalia agency, which takes 

action to recover outstanding 

tax revenues, have become hate 

figures during the recession 

and its offices in many parts of 

the country have come under a 

series of attacks. 

At the weekend the 

government approved a decree 

which stipulated that Equitalia 

cannot take possession of 

people’s main residences for 

outstanding tax bills, unless 

these homes have an exceptionally 

high market value. “In a period 

in which the Italian people 

have to face sacrifices on a daily 

basis, tenacious pursuit of evaders 

and the facilitation of fiscal 

obligations for honest taxpayers 

are important initiatives for 

achieving greater social justice,” 

Saccomanni told a meeting of 

finance police officers. “The 

fight against tax evasion cannot 

be slowed down at all, but it can 

and must take account of the 

needs of taxpayers in difficulty”. 

Meanwhile in Lough Erne, 

Northern Ireland, Obama invited 

the Italian premier to the White 

House, sources said. Details and 

dates were not made known, but 

the visit is reportedly to take 

place before the end of the year. 

FIAT RAISES TWO BILLION EUROS 

FOR MERGER, SAYS BLOOMBERG 

New York - Turin-based 

Fiat has raised two billion euros 

in credit from major banks to help 

fund its merger with Chrysler to 

create a global auto-making force, 

Bloomberg news reported. 

Nine banks, including 

Italian lenders Intesa Sanpaolo 

and Unicredit as well as Barclays, 

BNP Paribas, Citigroup, 

Royal Bank of Scotland, and 

Societe Generale, have agreed to 

participate in providing a threeyear 

credit line, the sources told 

Bloomberg. 

All are expected to 

sign onto the deal on June 21. It 

replaces a 1.95 billion-euro credit 

facility, the sources said. 

Fiat already owns a 

58.5% stake in Chrysler and is 

anxious to purchase the remaining 

shares to complete a merger with 

the American automaker, which 

Fiat rescued from bankruptcy in 

2009. 

At that time, the 

remaining 41.5% stake went to 

the United Autoworkers retiree 

health-care trust, called VEBA. 

Analysts now value the 

VEBA stake at $3.5 billion to 

$4 billion US, Forbes magazine 

reported at the end of April.

PIU' FRUTTA E MENO CAFFE' IN DIETA ESAMI 

ROMA - L'abuso di 

caffè è l'errore alimentare più 

frequente degli studenti che si 

preparano ad affrontare l'esame 

di maturità, perché provoca eccitazione, 

ansia ed insonnia che 

fanno perdere concentrazione 

e serenità. I maturandi dovrebbero 

invece preferire la frutta che 

aiuta a rilassarsi e a combattere 

il grande caldo che disturba in 

questi giorni gli studi. I suggerimenti 

arrivano da Coldiretti che 

ha stilato la lista degli alimenti 

"promossi e bocciati" nella dieta 

per gli esami di maturità ai nastri 

di partenza il prossimo mercoledì 

19 giugno, nel pieno dell'ondata 

di calore che il veste l'Italia. 

Un aiuto per vincere la preoccupazione 

viene dagli alimenti 

ricchi di sostanze rilassanti 

come pane, pasta o riso, lattuga, 

radicchio, cipolla, formaggi 

freschi, yogurt, uova bollite, latte 

caldo, frutta dolce e infusi al 

miele che favoriscono il sonno e 

aiutano l'organismo a rilassarsi 

per affrontare con la necessaria 

energia e concentrazione la sfida 

scolastica. Per affrontare il rush 

finale da evitare, perché possono 

provocare insonnia e agitazione, 

sono, oltre al caffè, anche 

patatine in sacchetto, salatini 

e cioccolata, che sono invece 

spesso presenti tra le scorte di 

emergenza delle ansiose vigilie. 

Per un buon rendimento scolastico 

è poi necessario cercare di 

riposare adeguatamente facendo 

attenzione all'alimentazione, 

evitando sia il digiuno che gli 

eccessi, in particolare con cibi 

pesanti o con sostanze eccitanti. 

Tra i condimenti out sono da 

evitare cibi con sodio in eccesso 

per cui vanno banditi curry, pepe, 

paprika e sale in abbondanza, 

ma anche piatti nei quali sia 

stato utilizzato dado da cucina. 

Anche gli alimenti in scatola per 

l'eccesso di sodio e di conservanti 

sono da tenere lontani. 

Esistono invece cibi che 

- evidenzia la Coldiretti - aiutano 

a rilassarsi per la presenza di un 

aminoacido, il triptofano, che 

favorisce la sintesi della serotonina, 

il neuromediatore del 

benessere e il neurotrasmettitore 

cerebrale che stimola il rilassamento. 

La serotonina aumenta 

con il consumo di alimenti con 

zuccheri semplici come la frutta 

dolce di stagione ma effetti positivi 

nella dieta serale si hanno 

con legumi, uova bollite, carne, 

pesce, formaggi freschi. Tra le 

verdure - ricorda ancora la Coldiretti 

- al primo posto la lattuga, 

seguita da cipolla e aglio, perché 

le loro spiccate proprietà sedative 

conciliano il sonno. Bene anche 

un bicchiere di latte caldo, giusto 

prima di andare a letto, che oltre 

a diminuire l'acidità gastrica 

che può interrompere il sonno, 

fa entrare in circolo durante la 

digestione elementi che favoriscono 

una buona dormita per

in formaggi freschi e yogurt, 

che sono in grado di attenuare 

insonnia e nervosismo. Infine

5.7-billion-euro MOSE project 

is a series of retractable dykes

deadline for implementing the 

gates is 2016, but the work is

The MOSE project, which 

in Italian is a play on the name 

for Moses, has been contested 

since its inception, both because 

environmentalists say it will interrupt 

the natural ecosystem and 

because some experts believe it 

will fall short of protecting the 

city. 

Italian heritage and 

conservation body Italia Nostra 

says MOSE will ultimately be 

"incapable" of halting dangerously 

high water and will have 

to be demolished soon after it is 

complete

the islands. 

According to a recent 

study, plate tectonics are also 

to blame as the Adriatic plate 

is sliding beneath the Apennine 

Mountains, causing the area to 

drop in elevation.

SUMMIT UE, PRESSING LETTA SUL 

LAVORO: “ORA BISOGNA AGIRE SUBITO” 

ROMA - "Non abbiamo 

più tempo, bisogna agire subito". 

Così il premier Enrico Letta, secondo 

quanto riferito da fonti di 

palazzo Chigi, ha aperto i lavori 

del vertice con i ministri del Lavoro 

e delle Finanze di Francia, 

Germania, Spagna e Italia. 

Le Banca europea degli 

Investimenti (Bei) deve essere 

coinvolta nel contrasto alla 

disoccupazione, in particolare 

giovanile, attraverso un sostegno 

alle Pmi mirato alle assunzioni. 

E' una delle proposte fatte da 

Enrico Letta nel corso del vertice 

sul lavoro a Palazzo Chigi. 

L'altra proposta del premier è 

il coinvolgimento delle casse 

depositi e prestiti nazionali, 

insieme alla Bei, nelle politiche 

di sostegno al lavoro. Temi che 

Letta intende porre all'attenzione 

del prossimo vertice Ue. 

Prima del vertice europeo 

di fine giugno il Governo 

presenterà un piano nazionale 

di contrasto alla disoccupazione, 

con particolare attenzione 

a quella giovanile. Lo ha 

confermato il premier Enrico 

Letta, aprendo i lavori del vertice 

ministeriale di palazzo Chigi 

(fra Germania, Italia, Francia 

e Spagna) dedicato al nodo 

dell'occupazione 

C'é "molta soddisfazione 

per il formato dell'incontro" 

di oggi a palazzo Chigi perché 

dimostra che "l'Europa non si affida 

solo ai ministri dei numeri e 

delle Finanze", ma anche a quelli 

del Lavoro per lottare contro la 

disoccupazione". Lo ha detto il 

premier Enrico Letta, intervenendo 

alla conferenza dei prefetti 

a Roma. 

Al prossimo vertice 

europeo, ha affermato ancora il 

Presidente del Consiglio, "non 

ci accontenteremo di parole e 

dichiarazioni" perché "questo è 

il problema dell'Europa di oggi" 

che ha "reso più lontane le istituzioni" 

dai cittadini. 

C'é "molta soddisfazione 

per il formato dell'incontro" 

di oggi a palazzo Chigi perché 

dimostra che "l'Europa non si af- 

fida solo ai ministri dei numeri e 

delle Finanze", ma anche a quelli 

del Lavoro per lottare contro la 

disoccupazione", ha aggiunto il 

Presidente del Consiglio. 

I ministri di Italia, 

Francia, Germania e Spagna 

hanno "confermato l'impegno a 

restare nell'ambito delle strategie 

di consolidamento fiscale, 

precondizione importante per 

una crescita sostenibile". Lo ha 

detto il ministro dell'Economia 

Fabrizio Saccomanni nella conferenza 

stampa a Palazzo Chigi. 

"C'é stato consenso nel trovare 

nuovi canali di finanziamento 

alle Pmi che vadano verso strumenti 

a medio termine" e un'idea 

"interessante è la possibilità per 

le Pmi di mini bond o obbligazioni 

a caratteristiche semplificate 

garantite da intermediari o dallo 

stato o iniziative internazionali 

usando risorse della Bei". 

"Sulla Bei c'é stato forte 

consenso" sulla necessità che "la 

Bei, che ha avuto un aumento 

di capitale di 10 miliardi di euro 

l'anno scorso, utilizzi in maniera 

anche innovativa" questi 

fondi, "moltiplicando la base di 

capitale fino a un massimo che 

può arrivare anche a 60 miliardi 

per finanziare soprattutto le Pmi, 

l'innovazione e l'investimento e 

che abbia come obbiettivo il riassorbimento 

della disoccupazione 

realizzare in tempi brevi". Così 

Fabrizio Saccomanni, ministro 

dell'Economia. 

I ministri delle Finanze 

di Italia, Germania, Francia 

e Spagna "hanno concordato 

sull'importante ruolo, per riattivare 

l'attività di finanziamento 

sui mercati, che ha il completamento 

del progetto di unione 

bancaria", ha spiegato Saccomanni. 

Per sostenere la creazione 

di lavoro occorre "un miglioramento 

della partnership tra 

pubblico e privato. Un impegno 

così forte non può esser fatto 

solo dal settore pubblico". Lo ha 

detto il ministro del Lavoro Enrico 

Giovannini nella conferenza 

stampa a Palazzo Chigi. 

G8: LETTA, L'ITALIA ESCE RAFFORZATA 

"Manterremo gli impegni 

con l'Europa perché l'Europa 

è un paese serio e i paesi seri 

mantengono i loro impegni". Lo 

ha detto il premier Enrico Letta.

"mi è parso di trovare un sponda 

(sul lavoro) che potrà essere 

utile in altre occasioni". Così il 

premier Enrico Letta al termine 

del summit G8. "Penso che gli

YOUTH-UNEMPLOYMENT EFFORTS ACCELERATE IN ROME 

Rome - The economy 

and labor ministers from the eurozone's 

four largest economies 

met in Rome Friday to discuss 

escalating youth unemployment 

in the crisis-stricken bloc and 

possible solutions, one of which 

includes tens of billions of euros 

in new financing for small businesses. 

"We have no time left," 

said Premier Enrico Letta at the 

meeting, according to sources 

from his office. "We must act 

immediately". A record 12.2% of 

the eurozone's working population 

is unemployed, while youth 

unemployment in the bloc is 

double at 24.4%. 

In Italy it is a record 

12%, with around four in 10 Italians 

aged 15-to-24 out of work. 

The Organization for 

Economic Co-operation and 

Development (OECD) believes 

both will go up next year. 

Economy and labor 

ministers from Germany, France, 

Italy and Spain attended the 

meeting, entitled Jobs for Youth - 

Building Opportunities, Opening 

Paths. After the meeting, Italy's 

economy minister said the ministers 

had agreed that the European 

Investment Bank (EIB) should 

use a capital increase towards 

creating up to 60 billion euros in 

financing for small and medium 

enterprises (SMEs). Fabrizio 

Saccomanni said "there was 

consensus on finding new financing 

channels for SMEs" and on 

the need for "the EIB, which had 

a capital increase of 10 billion 

euros last year, to use (these 

funds) in an innovative way, 

multiplying the capital base up to 

a maximum of 60 billion euros". 

Distinct from the European Central 

Bank (ECB), the EIB is the 

EU's nonprofit long-term lending 

body, whose shareholders are 

member states. 

Ahead of the meeting, 

the Italian premier made clear 

that more than just talk was 

expected from the meetings. "We 

will not settle for words or declarations...That 

is the problem with 

Europe today that has distanced 

institutions from citizens," Letta 

said. 

The jobs meeting was 

scheduled ahead of a European 

Union summit on June 27-28 

which is expected to have the 

employment crisis high on its 

agenda; as well as a youth-unemployment 

conference in Berlin 

on July 3; and a G20 ministerial 

meeting in Moscow in mid-July. 

Letta has vowed that 

Italy will have a national action 

plan against youth unemployment 

in place before this issue is 

addressed at June's EU summit, 

which he successfully campaigned 

for at an EU summit on 

May 22, his debut as premier 

on the European stage. On that 

same day, national statistics 

agency Istat reported that Italy 

has Europe's highest proportion 

of young people doing "nothing", 

with almost a quarter of 15-to- 

29-year-olds not in education, 

employment or training (NEET).

maschile e femminile, in una 

sfida agonistica che si sono 

fronteggiati nei campi di tennis 

del Sunnyside Gardens Park di 

New York. La manifestazione 

e' stata allietata da una eccellente 

festa all'italiana con piatti 

speciali di: pasta (Farfalle) 

al tartufo molisano, fusilli al 

pesto, salsicce alle cipolle e

Non potevano mancare

On the 69th anniversary 

of D-Day, Astoria's VFW Post 

2348 was renamed in honor of 

a veteran who was there on that 

very day on Omaha Beach. 

The post was renamed 

after local resident Rocco 

Moretto, one of only two soldiers 

from his original company 

that survived WWII. Moretto 

was in the 1st Infantry Division, 

which received nicknames like 

the “Big Red One” and “The 

Bloody First” and had a reputation 

for being so tough that 

commanders routinely sent them 

to the front line. 

The company, which 

originally included 219 men, 

served the entirety of World War 

II, from Normandy to the Battle 

of the Bulge to Czechoslovakia, 

where they were stationed when 

the war ended. 

“Rarely, rarely do we 

get to be in the presence of a 

hero like Rocco Moretto, who 

actually is responsible for us 

being able to be here today” said 

Councilman Peter Vallone, Jr. 

Pat Gualtieri, executive 

director of the United War 

Veterans Council, said his group 

strapped a picture of the WWII 

veteran to their float in the 

president's inauguration parade. 

He then presented Moretto with 

a flag flown at the event. 

“This is an honor I 

never dreamed of receiving,” 

said Moretto. “Believe me when 

I say that I am overwhelmed 

with it all, especially when it 

comes on the 69th anniversary 

of D-Day.” 

He then stopped his 

speech to salute his fellow veterans 

of VFW Post 2348. 

“I want you all to know 

that I have the upmost respect 

and enormous admiration for all 

of you young veterans,” he said. 

The walls of Moretto's 

apartment are already lined with 

medals and awards from his 

time of service. Following last 

week's ceremony, Moretto was 

given a plaque and a framed 

patch of the 1st Infantry Division. 

“I’m going to need 

more walls,” he joked.

Rome - A major restoration 

of the Colosseum may begin 

as soon as the first week of July, 

Rome authorities said. Builders 

are awaiting the final word 

from the Council of State, Italy's 

highest administrative court, 

which must rule on two final 

appeals to the project. One of 

them was submitted by consumer 

group Codacons, which has a 

long-running legal complaint 

that the bidding process on the 

project lacked transparency and 

yielded too many concessions to 

Diego Della Valle, the owner of 

the Tod's shoe company behind 

the estimated 25-million-euro 

restoration. The other appeal was 

submitted by a contractor that 

lost its bid for the restoration. 

The Roman Superintendency 

of Archeology already 

began work in January to create 

a safety zone around the ancient 

Roman arena to prevent injuries 

from possible falling materials. 

The Colosseum is close 

to 2,000 years old and feeling its 

age. 

Begun in 72 AD, the 

Colosseum, or Flavian Amphitheatre, 

is considered one of the 

greatest works of Roman architecture 

and engineering. 

It is 189 meters by 156 

meters and covers an area of 

24,000 square meters. 

Capable of seating 

50,000 spectators, it was used for

attending a G8 summit in 

Northern Ireland announced 

several agreements Tuesday on 

promoting economic growth and 

employment, and fighting tax 

evasion and money laundering, 

while how to solve the conflict 

in Syria continued to divide 

Russia and the West. In a joint 

statement, the leaders agreed that 

"an urgent priority is to promote 

growth and jobs, especially for 

young people and the long-term 

unemployed. Going into the 

talks, Italian Premier Enrico 

Letta made youth unemployment 

a major talking point, and US 

President Barack Obama reportedly 

said he would press the 

issue after meeting privately with 

Letta on the first day of the summit. 

"Sustaining demand, securing 

public finances, and reforms" 

were three keys to stimulating 

economic growth, the statement 

said. But with growth must also 

come austerity measures, the 

statement said, which are already 

in place throughout Europe since 

the euro crisis began to seriously 

threaten the stability of the single 

currency. Such measures are 

"strongly necessary" to reducing 

financial fragmentation, it 

said. "Budget sustainability must 

go together with well-defined 

growth strategies". According to 

Downing Street, the G8 leaders 

also reached an agreement on 

fighting money laundering and 

shell companies used to dodge 

taxes. As for Syria, the most 

the G8 leaders could all agree 

to was "to strongly support the 

proposal for a conference on 

reaching a political solution" to 

the conflict. The statements were 

part of a draft assessment of the 

meeting which was undergoing 

review. Outside the summit, 

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister 

Serghiei Ryabkov said "there 

will be no reference (in the 

final draft) to the fate of (Syrian 

President Bashar al)-Assad due 

to the opposition of Russia". He 

also called on the US and Europe 

"to evaluate three or four times"

water has improved in quality by 

more than 4.7% since last year, 

the health ministry said in a new 

report. 

While 96.6% of swimming 

waters were found to comply 

with standards, another 1.3% 

of water sources were closed to

data provided by Italy's regional 

government and covers 5,509 

different swimming sites, including 

4,880 coastal areas. The rest

measured was judged to be "excellent," 

the report added. 

Best water quality was

Italy's water report placed the 

country above average within the 

European Union, behind Cyprus 

and Luxembourg, which have 

100% safe swimming water.

impegnati - scrivono i leader - a 

raggiungere una soluzione politica 

della crisi siriana". 

"Non è un segreto che 

vi siano state divergenze" al 

tavolo del G8 sulla Siria ma "tutti 

vogliamo la fine del conflitto". 

Lo ha detto il primo ministro Gb, 

David Cameron, nella conferenza

La Russia non è rimasta

St. Anthony of Padova 

is the name by which he is 

generally known. He was only 

a young man when he died, and 

Padova was indeed his last home 

on earth. His relics rest there today, 

honored by thousands every 

year in a basilica built in his honor 

. Since his death, and by his 

intercession, countless miracles 

have been reported through more 

than seven centuries in all parts 

of the world. 

But Padova in northern 

Italy was not his native city. 

Anthony was born in Lisbon 

Portugal in 1195 on the feast 

of Mary's assumption, August 

15th. Being born in Lisbon, 

Portuguese biographies call him 

"Anthony of Lisbon". The fact is 

that neither the people of Italy or 

Portugal can claim him exclusively 

as their own. St. Anthony 

is the saint of the whole world - a 

universal saint for the universal 

church. 

At the young age of 36, 

he died on June 13th, 1231 in the 

poor Clare Convent at Arcella 

near Padova, he died singing, 

like St. Francis - his final song, 

a hymn to Mary. The following 

Tuesday, Anthony's remains 

were finally borne in a triumphal 

funeral procession to the friars 

church in Padova. The day saw 

a marvelous manifestation of 

favors granted to all who called 

on the saint for his intercession. 

As a result, Tuesday has become 

particularly associated with St. 

Anthony. Down through the 

centuries, pilgrims to his tomb 

have gathered there on Tuesdays 

to pray for their needs. Less then 

a year later on May 30th, 1232, 

he was canonized a saint. When 

Anthony was transferred to his 

basilica in 1263, his tongue was 

found intact. Reverence for the 

Saint spread and has continued 

ever since. In 1946, Pope Pius 

XII officially declared Anthony 

a "Doctor of the Universal 

Church". Among the Franciscan 

themselves, and in the liturgy of 

his feast, St. Anthony is celebrated 

as a teacher and preacher 

extraordinary. 

It is a long standing 

Christian tradition that the saints 

in heaven pray for us on earth 

and we in turn honor them for 

the great gifts God has given 

them and them for their help and 

prayers. 

We indeed have a 

special friend in St, Anthony 

of Padova. A contemporary of 

St. Francis of Assisi, Anthony 

wanted to live for something 

beyond himself that would give 

meaning to his life. As a young 

Augustian in Portugal, he was 

so inspired by the martyrdom of 

five Franciscan friars (Berard, 

Peter, Accursio, Aduito and Otto) 

in Morocco they asked the king 

to convert to the Christian faith 

as a result, the king put them 

to death by a sword on January 

16, 1220. The relics of the 

martyr friars were laid to rest in 

the Church of the Holy Cross in 

Coimbra where Fernando lived. 

Inspired by the friars heroic 

deaths he became a Franciscan. 

He joined their Olivais community 

in 1220 taking the name 

Anthony. He soon became a well 

known preacher, proclaiming the 

gospel through France and Italy, 

where large crowds filled town 

squares and vast fields to hear 

his sermons. Anthony was able

to call people to a deeper faith 

because he himself was a man 

of faith. He never lost sight of 

the transcendent dimension of his 

own life which enabled others to 

see him the transcendent dimension 

of their lives. He was truly 

a living gospel to others. And 

that's what makes St. Anthony 

of Padova a "wonder worker", a 

friend to all of us.

of the Whole World. A universal 

saint for a universal Church. 

Like Mother Teresa today, he 

was one who followed St. Francis 

as an instrument of peace and 

caring about people, especially 

the poor. 

Devotion to St. Anthony 

and the Franciscans forms a part 

of life in nearly every land. Visit 

a catholic church of any size and 

you will find a statue or stained 

glass window of St. Francis, St. 

Anthony or St. Clare, and a way 

to the cross, popularized the 

Franciscans. People pray to St. 

Anthony about the troubles and 

challenges in their daily lives 

- especially to find things they 

have lost.

FLORENTINE POTATO DUMPLINGS 

INGREDIENTI 

1200 gr di spinaci 

800 gr di ricotta 

90 gr di tuorlo d’uovo 

150 gr di parmigiano 

200 gr di fecola di patate 

200 gr di farina 

200 gr di burro 

INGREDIENTS 

3 lb of spinach 

28 oz of ricotta 

3 oz of egg yolk 

5 oz of parmigiano cheese 

7 oz of potato starch 

7 oz of flour 

7 oz of butter 

PREPARAZIONE 

Lessare gli spinaci in poca acqua, colarli e strizzarli bene, dopodiché 

tritarli finemente. Unire gli spinaci alla ricotta ed impastare con i 

rossi d’uovo, il parmigiano, il sale ed il pepe, poi aggiungere la fecola 

e quasi tutta la farina, ( la restante farina si usa per stendere sul 

tavolo l’impasto ). Mettere l’impasto dentro ad un sac-à-poche 

senza douille, e gettarlo a cilindri del diametro di circa 2 cm, oppure 

stenderlo con le mani formando i medesimi cilindri. Tagliare con un 

coltellino gli gnocchi ad una lunghezza di 3 cm e, facoltativamente, 

rigarli su di una forchetta. Cuocere gli gnocchi in abbondante acqua 

salata, (prima di cuocerli tutti, provare la resistenza e la 

consistenza dopo la cottura di due gnocchi, infatti nel caso in cui 

risultassero troppo morbidi si aggiungerà fecola), quando tornano 

a galla toglierli dal fuoco e saltarli in padella con burro fuso e salvia 

tagliata finemente. Si servono su piatto di portata cospargendo un po’ 

di parmigiano grattugiato ed una salsiera di salsa pomodoro a parte. 

PREPARATION 

Blanch the spinach, strain them, squeeze them well then mince. 

First mix the spinach with the ricotta then mix with the egg yolk, 

parmigiano cheese, salt and pepper, then add the potato starch and 

almost all the flour, (the rest of the flour is used when rolling dough). 

Poll dough into cylinders of the diameter of around 1 1/2 inches. Cut 

the potato dumplings to a length of 2 inches with a knife. Cook the 

potato dumplings boiling water (add a little salt to water so dumplings 

do not stick together), (before cook them all, try the resistance 

and the consistence after the cooking of two potato dumplings, in 

fact in the case in which they result too soft, any potato starch can be 

added), when dumplings float remove them and place into frying pan 

with melted butter and sage. Serve on a dish with tomato sauce and 

sprinkle to taste grated parmigiano on top.

St. Anthony is today, as 

he was in his lifetime, the faithful 

friend of all in trouble, especially 

the poor and the needy. 

"St. Anthony's Bread" means that 

when a person prays to the Saint 

for a favor, he or she promises to 

give a gift ("bread") to the poor 

or some charitable cause. This 

custom goes back to the year 

1888. At that time there lived in 

Toulon, France, a devout young 

woman named Louise Bouffier, 

who managed a small bakery 

store. One morning Louise 

couldn't open the door with her 

key. Neither could a locksmith, 

who told her he would have to 

break the door open. While he 

went to get his tools, Louise 

promised St. Anthony she would 

give some bread to the poor if 

the door could be opened without 

force. When the locksmith 

returned, she begged him to try

From Toulon this custom of giving 

to poor in gratitude for favors 

received from God through St. 

Anthony's intercession has spread 

to all parts of the world. Pope 

Leo XIII, in his letter of 1898 on 

the Thirteen Tuesdays, commended 

the practice of giving "St, 

Anthony's Bread" to the needy. 

SAINT ANTHONY'S LILIES 

Pictures and statues of 

St, Anthony often portray him 

holding a lily. This beautiful 

flower has long been regarded as 

in Christian art as a symbol of 

integrity of life. In many parts of 

Revolution. Franciscans on the 

island had been forced to leave, 

but people continued to honor 

St. Anthony as the friars had 

taught them. On his feast, bouquets 

of lilies were placed at the 

Saint's shrine in the deserted 

church. 

Many month's later, the 

lilies were found still fresh and 

white. Permission to bless lilies 

in honor of St. Anthony was 

given by Pope Leo XIII. "St. 

Anthony's oil" is obtained by 

pressing the lilies blessed by a 

priest.
