Rimarrà stupefatto dal fascino del paesaggio dell’Alto Adige!
In “Race” interpreta il controverso Avery Brundage, uno dei
più importanti dirigenti sportivi della storia statunitense più
volte accusato di essere filo-nazista: quanto è difficile mettersi
nei panni di personaggi così diversi dalla sua personalità?
Capirli è il primo dovere che si ha come attori, altrimenti non hai
modo di dargli credibilità. Nel caso di Brundage il discorso è ancora
più complesso. La storia non ha chiarito se fosse veramente
razzista. Aveva il potere di far boicottare le Olimpiadi agli Stati
Uniti. Non lo fece, ma non è ancora chiaro se sia stato perché
aveva simpatia del Führer o perché credeva che partecipare significasse
mantenere intatto lo spirito olimpico. Che avremmo fatto
al suo posto? Se la Nord Corea oggi ospitasse le Olimpiadi, noi ci
andremmo o lasceremmo i nostri atleti a casa?
È mai stato attratto dalla carriera sportiva?
Ho cominciato come velocista, poi da adolescente sono passato
alle lunghe distanze. All’università ho provato anche il rugby, ma
non faceva per me. Oggi preferisco sport più tranquilli, la mia
giornata ideale è in barca a vela o a cavallo intorno al mio castello
nel sud dell’Irlanda. Mi piace immergermi nella natura.
Meglio la vita di campagna che quella di città?
Quando si hanno già molti stimoli grazie al lavoro, allora è bene
potersi rifugiare in un luogo completamente diverso. Invito spesso
amici. Amo la buona compagnia, chiacchierare con persone
che sappiano arricchirmi. Il luogo, in fin dei conti, è soprattutto
una cornice. Il quadro sono le persone che vi stanno dentro.
Ha mai pensato di lasciare la carriera da attore?
Mai, inutile negarlo, è una bella vita, se in passato non sono stato
felice, non ho mai pensato che dipendesse dalla recitazione.
Anche se può essere difficile dire dei no, quando il ritmo diventa
troppo esasperato è importante saper rinunciare a qualche proposta,
senza avere paura. È il modo migliore per non finire con
l’odiare questo favoloso mestiere!

You’ll be amazed by the charm of the South Tyrol landscape! In
“Race” you play the controversial Avery Brundage, one of the most
important sports managers in U.S. history, who was repeatedly accused
of being pro-Nazi. How hard is it to play characters that are
so different from your personality?
Understanding them is an actor’s first duty, otherwise you can’t
make them believable. With Brundage, it’s even more complex. History
hasn’t made it clear whether he was really a racist. He had the
power to make the U.S. boycott the Olympics. He didn’t, but it’s still
not clear if it was because he had sympathies for the Führer, or because
he believed participating meant keeping the Olympic spirit
alive. What would we have done in his place? If North Korea were to
host the Olympics today, would we go or keep our athletes at home?
Have you ever been drawn to a sports career?
I began as a sprinter, then went on to long-distance running as a
teenager. At university I also tried rugby, but it wasn’t for me. Now
I prefer more peaceful sports. My ideal day is sailing or horseback
riding around my castle in southern Ireland. I like to immerse myself
in nature.
Which is better, life in the country or in the city?
When you already have a lot of stimulus from work, it’s nice to get
away in a completely different place. I often invite friends. I love the
beautiful countryside, chatting with people who can enrich me. In
the end, place is mainly a frame. The picture is the people inside it.

Have you ever thought of giving up acting as a career?
Never, it’s useless to deny it. It’s a great life. If I’ve been unhappy in
the past, I never thought it depended on acting. Though it can be
hard to say no, when the pace becomes too hectic, it’s important to
know how to turn down a project, without fear. It’s the best way not
to end up hating this fabulous profession!
