Irons sembra avere l’energia e l’entusiasmo dei
suoi esordi, primi Anni 80. I premi non gli interessano più. «Ho
avuto la soddisfazione di vincere l’Oscar nel 1991 per “Il mistero
Von Bulow” e va bene così», ci rivela quando lo incontriamo
alll’Olympiastadion di Berlino, in una pausa dalle riprese di
“Race”, il film sulla leggendaria vittoria del corridore di colore
Jesse Owens alle Olimpiadi del 1936. A breve Irons passerà alcune
settimane anche in Italia per girare “La Corrispondenza”,
nuova pellicola di Giuseppe Tornatore. Non è l’unico progetto
per Irons, perché già montato, ma in attesa di distribuzione (accadrà
tra un anno) c’è anche “Batman VS Superman”, kolossal
in cui interpreta per la prima volta Alfred, il maggiordomo di
Bruce Wayne.
La sua agenda di lavoro sembra sempre piena: quando riposa?
La vita di un attore è piena di momenti morti. Ci sono giornate
in cui non giri perché non hai scene in copione e mesi in cui non
giri perché non hai trovato il film giusto. Questo è un momento
particolare. Non potevo che accettare con entusiasmo un film su
Jesse Owens, la sua impresa davanti ad Adolf Hitler è un pezzo
di storia eccezionale mai raccontata al cinema. L’Italia poi, non
potevo dire di no! I colori, la cucina, le persone... È dai tempi di
“Il mercante di Venezia” che voglio girarci nuovamente un film.
Le riprese saranno in Trentino, dicono sia molto bello.

“I love to travel. I think it’s one my secrets to happiness, much as
being bored is the best way to age rapidly”. At 67, Jeremy Irons
appears to have the energy and enthusiasm of his beginnings in
the 1980s. Awards no longer interest him. “I had the satisfaction
of winning the Oscar in 1991 for “Reversal of Fortune” and that’s
good enough”, he said when we met him at the Olympiastadion
in Berlin, on a break from filming “Race”, based on the legendary
victory of the black runner Jesse Owens at the 1936 Olympics.
Soon, Irons will be in Italy for some weeks to shoot Giuseppe Tornatore’s
new film, “La Corrispondenza”. It’s not the only project
for Irons. Already shot and awaiting distribution within the year is
“Batman v Superman”, a colossal in which he essays Alfred, Bruce
Wayne’s butler, for the first time.
Your work schedule always seems to be full: don’t you ever rest?
The life of an actor is full of dead periods. There are days when you
don’t shoot because you don’t have scenes in the script, and months
when you don’t shoot because you haven’t found the right film. This
is an unusual moment. I couldn’t resist making a film about Jesse
Owens. His exploit in front of Adolf Hitler is a remarkable piece
of history that has never been told in film. And I couldn’t say no to
Italy! The colour, the food, the people… Ever since “The Merchant
of Venice”, I’ve wanted to make a new movie. We’ll be shooting in
Trentino, which they say is very beautiful.
