UUn viaggio a Londra non può prescindere dall’offerta infinita
di musica dal vivo, che ogni sera costringe a una
scelta difficile tra grandi nomi e band emergenti, e a una
mezza giornata tra i suoi negozi di dischi superspecializzati
che, grazie alla rinascita del vinile, stanno vivendo una nuova
primavera. Gli annunci migliori si trovano su londonears.com,
che ha reso meno indispensabile procurarsi una copia di Time Out
(peggiorato da quando è diventato un free press) o di The Guide
che esce il sabato col Guardian. Destinazioni di eccellenza sono il
Barbican Centre (barbican.org.uk) cattedrale culturale nel cuore
della City, e il Southbank Centre (southbankcentre.co.uk) con la
sua deliziosa terrazza sul Tamigi. Qui la distinzione tra musiche
colte (classica, jazz) e popolari (rock, pop) è severamente bandita.
Adesso c’è “WOW: Women of the world festival”, festival dedicato
alle conquiste delle donne in tutti i campi culturali, ovviamente con
tanta musica al femminile; mentre a maggio inizia il Meltdown,
serie di concerti curati da star della musica e della cultura, sempre
sorprendenti. La fama ‘cutting edge’ di Londra è più viva che mai,
in un piccolo club di Dalston, ben nascosto dietro a un cantiere che
sembra eterno, c’è il Cafe Oto (cafeoto.co.uk). Improvvisazione
e sperimentazione le parole d’ordine. Poco distante, c’è il cubo di
vetro del Vortex (vortexjazz.co.uk), ottima meta per gli appassionati
di jazz. Le giovani band in cerca di un contratto, si esibiscono
in giro per Shoreditch, la zona più hipster della città, dove si trova
anche quello che molti considerano il negozio di dischi migliore
di Londra: il Rough Trade East (roughtrade.com), con un programma
di showcase quotidiani e gratuiti. Ma sono ottimi anche:
Sounds of the Universe, nel cuore di Soho, o spingetevi fino a
Portobello Road, da Honest Jon’s (honestjons.com).

A trip to London offers an infinite variety of live music. It’s difficult
to choose between big names and upcoming bands every
evening, and how to spend a half-day in specialised shops that
are experiencing a rebirth thanks to the renewed popularity of
vinyl. The best info can be found at londonears.com, making it
less indispensable to buy Time Out (worse since it became free
press) or The Guide, published every Saturday in The Guardian.
Excellent venues are the Barbican Centre (barbican.org.uk), a
cathedral of culture in the heart of the City, and the Southbank
Centre (southbankcentre.co.uk), with a delightful terrace on
the Thames. Here, the distinction between cultured music (classical
and jazz) and popular (rock and pop) is strictly banned.
Now there’s “WOW: Women of the World Festival”, devoted to
women’s achievements in all cultural fields, obviously including
plenty of music; in May Meltdown begins, an ever-amazing
series of concerts organised by stars of music and culture. London’s
“cutting-edge” fame is alive and well in a little club in
Dalston, Cafe Oto (cafeoto.co.uk), hidden behind a seemingly
endless worksite. The keyword is improv and experimentation.
Not far away is the Vortex (vortexjazz.co.uk), a class cube, an
excellent place for jazz lovers. Young bands seeking contracts
perform around Shoreditch, the hippest area in the city, with
what many consider London’s best record shop, Rough Trade
East (roughtrade.com), which offers free showcase programs
daily. Also excellent are Sounds of the Universe in Soho, and
Honest Jon’s (honestjons.com) in Portobello Road.
