The image shown is by one of the greatest portraitists of 20th-century London,
Emil Otto Hoppé, recently recovered from undeserved oblivion. Hoppé’s images
(now on at the MAST in Bologna) were romantic and powerful, with a phenomenal
sense of composition, and always sought to capture the essence of the subject. We
have chosen, not coincidentally, the Battersea Power Station, immortalised by the
Beatles, Pink Floyd and Hitchcock. Over time it has been a symbol of industrial
progress and environmental degradation, but has also become a conceptual
artwork. The former “brick mammoth” is now a shopping and residential centre.
Glass and hanging gardens defy gravity, and the impenetrability of the old walls
and the smoke from the chimneys is only a theatrical act, a “Hollywood trick”.
We could say London is the Battersea Power Station, a city that changes but,
steadfastly remains an irresistible icon for the entire world.
