Collection <strong>of</strong> Microscopic Fungi<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Institute <strong>of</strong> Soil Biology, Biological Centre AS CR, v.v.i., České<br />

Budějovice<br />

HISTORY<br />

• The Collection <strong>of</strong> Microscopic Fungi <strong>of</strong> the Institute <strong>of</strong> Soil Biology BC AS CR, v.v.i. (CMF) was<br />

established in the Laboratory <strong>of</strong> Soil Biology, Institute <strong>of</strong> Landscape Ecology AS CR in 1980.<br />

• In 1990, the CMF was enriched by <strong>strains</strong> <strong>of</strong> ovicidal micr<strong>of</strong>ungi from the <strong>collection</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>.<br />

MUDr. Hynek Lýsek, Dr.Sc. (Palacký University, Olomouc).<br />

• Since 1993, the CMF is a member <strong>of</strong> the Federation <strong>of</strong> Czech and Slovak Collections <strong>of</strong><br />

Microorganisms (FCCM).<br />

MAIN AIMS OF THE CMS ISB<br />

• The CMF is focussed to collect, maintain and supply cultures mainly saprothrophic micromycetes<br />

(Mucormycotina; Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and their anamorphs) important for general and<br />

applied research, industry, agriculture, medicine, and teaching.<br />

• The CMF serves as teaching and comparative material for mycologists and students.<br />

PRESERVATION OF THE STRAINS<br />

• The Collection is taken care <strong>of</strong> by one pr<strong>of</strong>essional and one technician.<br />

• The <strong>strains</strong> are maintained in tubes on slope agar media in a refrigerator et ca 4 o C. For long-term<br />

strain storage <strong>of</strong> sporulating <strong>strains</strong>, a maitenance in alginate pellets is also employed.<br />

RESEARCH AREAS<br />

• The Collection is updated with new <strong>strains</strong> isolated mainly from soils and caves <strong>of</strong> the Czech<br />

Republic and also from abroad (Cuba, Russia (former U.S.S.R.), Slovakia, Macedonia, Germany,<br />

Pakistani, Romania, Spain, and U.S.A), as well as from indoor and outdoor air, litter, invertebrate<br />

intestines and excrements, vermicultures etc.<br />
