Paleoecologia
SETTEMBRE
2010 - N. 1
Figura 6 - Evoluzione nel tempo dei principali organismi biocostruttori (da Raffi e Serpagli, 1993)
state presenti anche nel passato, biocostruzioni
di altri ambienti. Attualmente
esistono strutture carbonatiche che si
sviluppano anche a profondità di oltre
1000 m, chiamate litoermi, costituite
principalmente da coralli scleractini aermatipici,
cioè non simbionti con le zooxantelle,
e da altri organismi come gli ottocoralli
(25) . È possibile che alcuni mudmound
del Paleozoico fossero della stessa
origine. Durante tutto il Mesozoico e
in particolar modo durante il Giurassico,
erano presenti biocostruzioni silicee, fatte
da spugne silicee esactinellidi (26) . Negli
ultimi venti anni sono state scoperte
anche recenti strutture di questo tipo,
strutture che sembravano scomparse alla
fine del Cretacico. Anche in ambiente
salmastro o iperalino (cioè a salinità
molto elevata) si sono sviluppate delle
biocostruzioni prodotte da ostriche, da
associazioni di briozoi e serpulidi e da
vermetidi (27) . Tali costruzioni si sono sviluppate
specialmente nel mare della
Paratetide (28) , caratterizzato da salinità
fortemente variabile, ma anche in altre
aree geografiche.
