High: waking up early Sunday morning 

“WS”(PD) skiing level 

1200 m according to guide book, 1300 m according to Stefan’s Altimetre. 

Time for ascend: 4 h according to guide book 

Ski, poles, skins, harscheisen, thermos, beacon, bacon, bread, chocolate 

Brand new Lowa boots for AB, Garmont for RB, old Scarpa for SN and 

JMT 

Laveno parking, 7:30 (JMT), 7:35 (AB, SN) and 7:45 (RB) 

Private car: grey Citroen C3 (nearly new, but already > 30.000 km!)

+ 150 others (conservative estimate by JMT, Stefan stopped counting at 

about 160 passing us in their descent. In Internet databases about 

yesterday’s conditions on Stotzigen Firsten you can find “only 10 persons 

were missing in order to make a Polonaise from the bottom to the top”)

Advice for the future 

Few clouds at the beginning, three snowflakes, but most of the time 

brilliant, sunny and quite warm. 

Breakfast at Mövenpick Bellinzona excellent: good coffee, fresh cakes 

and fruit juices. Exit Motorway in Andermatt, continue to Realp. From 

Realp train station (1538 m) on skis. Stotzigen Firsten (2747 m) is a 

highly frequented mountain that can be ascended also during insecure 

avalanche conditions (“3”), between 1900-2100 m 28 – 32.5°. The track 

(most of the time double track) was in hard conditions and not possible to 

miss. The fresh snow from the week and the night before was pulverous 

and extremely enjoyable during the descent. 

Avoid early Sunday morning, when the punctual early-birds start. 

Good shopping conditions for Swiss yoghurt in Mövenpick Bellinzona. 

If possible stop on way back in Bellinzona Nord Mövenpick again, for 

nice Rösti.
