JOSÈ ALTAFINI/JOSÈ ALTAFINI
9
BRASILE
VUOL DIRE ALLEGRIA
BRAZIL MEANS FUN
Brasile vuol dire allegria, sorrisi,
spiagge, meravigliose bellezze
naturali e voglia di vacanza. Ma
Brasile vuol dire anche e soprattutto
calcio, il calcio più bello del
mondo. E tra i protagonisti più
Josè Altafini
importanti della storia del calcio
in Brasile, Josè Altafini è una leggenda
vivente, secondo solo a Pelè nell’immaginario comune.
Brazil means fun, smiles, beaches, amazing natural beauty and
a longing for holiday. Above all Brazil also means football, the
world’s most beautiful football. Among the greatest stars of
Brazilian football is Josè Altafini, a living legend who is second
only to Pelè in the collective imagination. With Brazil’s national
team he won a World Cup in 1958, while in Italy with AC Milan,
Naples FC and Juventus FC he played 459 matches scoring 216
goals and winning 4 national championships and one European
Cup. Thanks to his origins, he also played 5 matches and scored
5 goals for Italy.
Altafini is famous above all for his smile, a Brazilian trade-mark.
azzurra come oriundo, giocando 6 partite e segnando 5 reti.
fuori” dice Altafini. “Natal, Fortaleza,
Recife e Bahia offrono una
vacanza all’insegna della spensieratezza
Per me Pelè rimane l’esempio
bellissima. E poi il clima. Quando in Europa comincia l’inverno
in Brasile comincia l’estate.
in alcuni posti.
“Brazil is a wonderful place
to spend your holiday.
People are really the way they look in
movies: cheerful, kind and always ready
to welcome foreigners”
“Brazil is a wonderful place to spend your holiday. People are
really the way they look in movies: cheerful, kind and always
ready to welcome foreigners,” says Altafini. “Natal, Fortaleza,
Recife and Bahia can guarantee a light-hearted and peaceful
holiday.”
The prejudice about Brazil as an unsafe place “must be
rejected,” claims Josè.
“Everywhere in the world there
are high-risk areas. Brazil is not
at all more dangerous than Italy.
You shouldn’t think that Rio de
Janeiro is a dangerous city. In
fact, in my opinion it is a wonderful
city, the most beautiful city in
the world.” Brazil is not only beaches,
sun and sea, but also wild
nature. “Iguassu waterfalls are a
true wonder.”
Besides, there is the other wonder,
Pelè, the greatest player in
the history of football. “I am often asked who the best player
of all time is between Pelè and Maradona. I don’t like making
comparisons because every champion belongs to his own time.
I understand that those who saw Maradona playing think that
he is the greatest ever football player, however, many people
I have talked with have never seen Pelè playing in person.
For me Pelè is still the brightest example of the essence of football.
No other player bordered on perfection like he did.”
According to Josè Altafini, Pelè’s memory – which is still vivid
everywhere in the country – is not the best thing that Brazil can
offer. “Thanks to the mixture of races, there are many beautiful
women and handsome men. Moreover, we can’t forget
the weather. When in Europe winter is beginning, in Brazil the
summer is just starting. In some places it lasts all year long.
For example, in Rio de Janeiro the average temperature is 25
degrees Celsius. Furthermore, the nature of Brazilian people,
especially in the north of the country, is very similar to that of
Italians. As for food, in Brazil there is everything you might look
for: European travellers will certainly be able to find the cuisine
they like better.”
Thanks Josè. We will let you know if you were right.
A CUBA
CERCA LE COSE DI IERI
E TROVERAI L’OGGI
di/by Paola Baldacci
L’ultimo ritratto cinematografico dell’Isla Grande, scattato
in ogni paseo.
Trinidad, Camaguey, Bayamo, Santiago
de Cuba e Baracoa. Passeggiare per
L’Avana, per esempio, regala immagini
incredibili e non si devono cercare chissà
quali nuovi quartieri, o indirizzi segreti.
o il mojito - “My mojito at La Bodeguita,
my daiquiri at El Floridita”, diceva l’agente
all’Avana del‘58 - a Cuba
restano quelli di sempre,
un po’ come la buona scrittura, che
proprio nella capitale ha lasciato
molte tracce. »
Cuba:
find the past and
discover today
The last cinema offering from the Isla Grande, which was
released by the Genoese director and scriptwriter Giuliano
Montaldo, focussed once again on the pure happiness of cuban
people. “The gold of Cuba”, which was not considered in the
official competition at Venice’s 66th Cinema exhibition, is a
documentary set at an important point in history, at a threshold
of change. It shows us the orginiality, the passion and the
contradictions (which are the most interesting parts of any
trip) of this carribean destination which is so frequently visited
by Italians. This year 130 thousand are expected to visit. It is
as though daily life in Cuba is motionless, both in Montaldo’s
film and in reality today. By going down into the streets of the
capital you can step back in time as the past comes to life
again. Cuba offers you a trip into a past which is unknown to
us as forty year olds in 2009, all within a difficult yet suprising
present, where perfumes and colours and the salsa accompany
and intoxicate you in every square, in every street. Havana
seems to be a real-life set, a stage in the open air stage.
So, to understand the meaning of the story, it is important to
take your time, to gradually slow down to the rhythm of the
streets, to discover the past, to take as many photographs
as possible. The icons and symbols of the past are those
which are the easiest to find, the ones which we look for in
the streets: the famous historical cars, the elderly women
smoking cigars, the heritage cities, the highly precious
historical estate of Cuba: from Havana to Remedios,
Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Camaguey, Bayamo, Santiago de Cuba
and Baracoa. Walking through Havana, for example, offers
you incredible images and you do not need to search in order
to find new areas or secret addresses. The places, the looks,
the music, the daiquiri or the mojito – “My mojito at La
Bodeguita, my daiquiri at El Floridita”, said “Our man
in Havana” (Graham Greene, 1958) – always remain
in Cuba, a little like a good piece of writing which has
really left its mark on the capital. »

PER LE VIE DELL’AVANA
Battete le piste conosciute, gli itinerari
coloniali, semmai cercate gallerie
d’artisti se volete “il nuovo”. Cominciate
dalle quattro piazze dell’Avana
vecchia: San Francesco d’Assisi,
Plaza Vieja, Plaza de Armas, la piazza
della Cattedrale. Visitate il mercato
artigianale, il museo del rum, quello
del tabacco, finite con la serata al
Tropicana.
campana”e scrisse quasi interamente
Cabaret Parisien dell’hotel Nacional.
Revolucion. Infine dedicatevi al sistema
coloniale difensivo della baia: i castelli
della Punta, del Morro, della Cabaña.
Salutate il Cristo dell’Avana e in serata, in
auto d’epoca, andate alla cerimonia del
Cañonazo, alle nove. »
ON THE STREETS OF
HAVANA
Follow the well known trail, the colonial
routes and if you are interested in
searching for modern features look for
artists’ galleries. Start with the four
squares of Havana’s old town: Saint
Francis of Assisi, Plaza Vieja, Plaza de
Armas, the Cathedral square. Visit the
craft market, then the museum of rum,
the museum of tabacco, and finish with
an evening at Tropicana. Then take the
Hemingway tour, who finished “For
whom the bell tolls” on Cuba. While he
was there he also almost entirely wrote
“The old man and the sea”, a novel
which became internationally renowned
and earned him a Pulitzer in 1953 and a
Nobel prize the following year. After the
tour, visit the restaurant Floridita, the
Bodeguita del Medio and Las Terrazzas
de Cojimar, the museum La Vigia, the
hotel Ambus Mundo and spend the
evening at the Cabaret Parisien at
the hotel Nacional. In the evenings, if
possible, try not to restrict yourself on
spending too much: go dancing at the
“Casa della musica”. In the middle of
your stay take yourself to the Capitolio
and to the museum of the revolution.
Finally look at the bay’s colonial defense
systems: the castles of Punta, Morro
typical period car, go to the ceremony of
Necessari e funzionali resort a parte,
un piccolo lusso che questa parte del
mondo latino conserva è la dolcezza di
svegliarsi tra lenzuola che non odorano
di essiccatori. L’ospitalità cubana ha
scelto di affinarsi e ci sono catene
alberghiere come “Hoteles E” che
hanno deciso di aprire solo negli edifici
storici: ecco “La Casa Verde” nella città
Patrimonio dell’Unesco Cienfuegos,
patii. “Difficilmente si trova un soggiorno
SLEEP IN A CONVENT OR
A HISTORICAL BUILDING
In addition to those resorts which are
full of amenities and facilities, this part
of the latin world still offers a little bit
of luxury as it conserves the pleasure of
waking up in sheets which do not smell
of a drier. Hopsitality in Cuba shows
careful attention to detail and there are
some chains of hotels such as “Hoteles E”
which have decided to use only historical
buildings for their hotels. For example,
“La Casa Verde”, in the Unesco estate of
Cienfuegos, is a five star hotel in a 1920s
building. In the heart of Havana there is,
however, the convent of Saint Bridget.
This convent is still run by the Brigidine
Sisters (who speak italian and cook
their own regional traditional dishes)
and they also offer guest rooms. In one
part of the complex there are dormitorys
and the sisters’ areas, whilst in the
other part there are rooms for use by
guests, such as bedrooms, a restaurant,
a library, living rooms and garden
patios. According to the specialists from
Lovelycuba.com “It is difficult to find a
better place to stay as far as simplicity,
cleanliness, peace and beauty are
concerned”.
Il ventiduenne lanciatore ha portato la
sua squadra, gli Habana Cowboys, al
titolo nazionale che non vincevano da
23 anni.
effetto. E inganna il battitore. Questa
entusiasmante sfida sportiva – come le
altre, la musicale e quelle diplomatiche
che seguono – è la metafora della voglia
di nuova amicizia che s’instaura tra
popoli lontani per troppo tempo. Anche
il nostro Jovanotti ha cantato nella Plaza
della revolucion all’Avana il 20 settembre
scorso, insieme a 15 artisti spagnoli e
Fidel. La musica, lo sport, il cinema, le
arti, insieme al turismo sembrano »
Today, Cuba have a chance to strip
the world title from the USA in the
Baseball world championships, with
Miguel Gonzalez. For the first time in
23 years the 22 year old pitcher has
taken his side, the Habana Cowboys, to
victory winning the national title. The
clash of bats and balls between the
two sides is nothing unusual, having
happened many times before, with
the USA trying to defend their title
and the cubans having a good 25 wins
to their name. What is interesting, is
Gonzalez’s method of pitching. He uses
the “knuckle ball”; a throw which may
lack speed, but is particularly effective
as it deceives the batsman. This exciting
sporting encounter – like the musical
and diplomatic meetings which follow
- represents the people’s wish for a new
friendship between the two countrys,
which has been absent for too long.
Italy’s Jovanotti sang in the Plaza della
revolucion in Havana last September
alongside 15 spanish and latinamaerican
artists, in a concert for peace. This is
another sign of the current desire to
turn over a new leaf and leave behind
the days of Fidel’s Cuba. Music, sport,
cinema, the arts, along with tourism,
seem to create opportunities for the
countries to interact. Of course it
shouldn’t be forced, but an improvement
in the political relations between the
USA and Cuba is positive, also because
many tourists are demonstrating a
willingness to make the effort with other
visitors they meet there. It seems that
a resolution to the embargo is drawing
closer, as confirmed by Obama’s latest
decision to allow americans with
immediate family in Cuba, including
aunts, first or second cousins to visit the
island whenever they like, for however
long they like.
At the beginning of September the US
Secretary of the Treasury announced
that they had taken a decision to
promote better contact between families
where the members are split between
the USA and Cuba. The economic
In 2008, 126 thousand italian
Canadians and the English.
Cuba’s tourist industry accounts
for almost 10% of the country’s
indirectly. As a destination, Cuba
features in the travel brochures
of approximately 40 italian
companies also run 20 or so of
the country’s resorts. Cuba aims
to increase the number of tourists
this year by 6%, reaching a total of
2.5 million visitors. Josè Antonio
Zerquera Hernandez, director of
dubbia moralità, nel quadro di una rete
“Il nostro agente all’Avana” appartiene
Wikipedia. A questo romanzo si è
dichiaratamente ispirato John le Carré
per “Il Sarto di Panama”.
VOLARE
IN MANI SICURE
FLYING IN SAFE HANDS
Come nasce Air Italy
fondai insieme a Lupo Rattazzi.
esempio volare a Santo Domingo andata e ritorno costava
Swissair e Volare e a quel punto mi ritirai.
economico finanziari. Era un gioiello. A quel punto ho deciso
braccio destro. »
Il Comandante
Giuseppe Gentile.
Captain Giuseppe
Gentile.
The phenomenon, Air Italy, is an Italian success
story. In a difficult business, subjected to many
variables, the company led by Captain Giuseppe
Gentile has succeeded in becoming an example of
good management and efficiency in just a few years.
Proven today by the fact that you are travelling on
an Air Italy flight. The secret There aren’t many,
and they are not ground-breaking. Who better
than Gentile to help us understand why Air Italy is
a successful company amidst many unsuccessful
examples in the world of civil aviation.
Why fly Air Italy
For the high level of safety, for reliability, regularity, punctuality,
for the on-board service guaranteed by our helpful and
motivated crew. For us, safety is our primary concern; this is
what makes us proud to work in this company. Punctuality is
achieved by investing in staff training and in spare parts. This
results in the best price-quality ratio.
How did Air Italy come about
It was born in 2005 out of the ashes of Air Europe which I founded in
1989 together with Lupo Rattazzi. Air Europe was a company which
changed air travel in Italy because it was the first company, apart
from Alitalia, which operated long haul flights. Air Europe made this
type of air travel something which was available to everyone. As an
example: a return flight to Santo Domingo cost 700,000 Lire which
was a dramatic change if we think that from Rome to Milan, only
an hour flight, cost 500,000. With
Air Europe began mass tourism
in the long haul sector. Then in 2000
Air Europe was taken over by Swissair and
Volare, and at this point I left. But Air Europe was
my creation, and when in 2004 I saw how it had failed
it was a huge blow for me. I found it difficult to take because
when we handed it over it had been yielding excellent financial
results. It was a gem. At this point I decided to start over again and
I founded Air Italy. Since 2005 we have grown rapidly, moving from
having two planes to twelve in just a few years. First we started with
charter flights, then scheduled, building an exceptional reputation.
The team consists partly of the old Air Italy team, and partly of
new recruits, such as Alessandro Notariche who today is my righthand
man. »

L’INTERVISTA/THE INTERVIEW
quattro 737 (2 new generation).
Stiamo crescendo molto in
Africa e nell’Oceano Indiano. Operiamo sul nordest del Brasile
ed in particolare su Fortaleza, Bahia e Natal, Porto Seguro e
Maceio.
In
questo modo il processo decisionale è semplificato. Decisioni
rapide senza commissioni di studio. Se c’è un problema lo analizziamo
e interveniamo rapidamente. Intervenire a 360 gradi
per mantenere un’azienda efficiente e ci
siamo riusciti. Ma soprattutto un unico
grande segreto: piacere ai nostri
passeggeri.
How has such rapid growth of this kind been possible
And what prospects are there for the company
We started with two Boeing B-757. Then the market required
more capacity and autonomy, so we introduced the B-767
aircrafts. Now our air fleet includes four 757 aircrafts, four
767 aircrafts and four 737 aircrafts (two new generation 737
aircrafts). And we are ready to increase our fleet. In the mid
to long term we want to become the second Italian airline both
for domestic flights and for long-range flights bound for tourist
destinations. We are developing well in Africa and the Indian
Ocean. We work on northwest Brazil and in particular on with
Fortaleza, Bahia and Natal, Porto Seguro and Maceio. We want
to develop in other South American countries. We are ready to
seize every opportunity.
Captain, you are one of the most experienced men in the world
of civil aviation. What will air traffic be like in future years
There will certainly be a large technological evolution in air
transport. Then, if not before, we will have ballistic flight,
planes which will leave the stratosphere before re-entering
and taking passengers in three hours from one part of the
globe to the other. Research is being conducted, and although
it seems like fantasy, it will come. The number of people who
choose to fly will increase more and more, but prices cannot
fall any lower, unless we can count on collateral proceeds.
And finally, what is the secret of Air Italy How have you
managed to keep your accounts in balance in a year which
has seen the worst crisis since 1929 A balance which, in
comparison with the losses of the vast majority of other
companies, seems miraculous.
We place a great deal of attention on cost control. Air transport
is a capital intensive business. It is necessary to keep many
factors under control because if one runs away it needs to be
reported immediately, and we are very efficient at this. We also
make decisions on a linear level, rather than vertical, which
makes the decision making process simpler as decisions
can be made quickly. If there is a problem, we analyse it and
intervene quickly. We have been successful in maintaining
an effective company by being involved in all parts
of the business. Above all, however, there is one
large secret: our passengers enjoy flying with us.
Viaggiare senza una guida a
volte può essere pericoloso.
L’intuito e i consigli degli
amici sono importanti, ma
avere indicazioni da chi è
pagato per farlo può essere
più conveniente. La Guida
BMW è sicuramente un aiuto
professionale. 848 pagine,
alberghi, ristoranti e negozi,
informazioni e consigli per
il tempo libero suddivisi per
regione, l’edizione 2010 della
Guida BMW si conferma come
un valido strumento per chi
desidera godere fino in fondo
del piacere di viaggiare. Come
tradizione, essa propone
l’elenco aggiornato dei
migliori dieci ristoranti, un
comodo indice alfabetico che
elenca le circa 900 località
censite.
La BMW Guida d’Italia
fornisce al lettore-viaggiatore
dei precisi punti di
riferimento ovunque si trovi e
ovunque sia diretto. La nuova
edizione della Guida BMW
riporta infatti gli indirizzi e le
valutazioni di 1.820 alberghi,
The recommendations
important but having some
tips from those who are paid
be useful. The BMW Guide
is certainly a professional
help. With 848 pages, more
a clear point of reference
wherever they are and
wherever they are going.
In fact, the new edition of
the BMW Guide gives the
addresses and ratings of 1820
BLACKBERRY:
IL BOLD DIVENTA
PIÙ SOTTILE.
Research in Motion lancia
il BlackBerry Bold 9700:
compatto, elegante, “europeo”.
Per quelli che ne hanno
sempre sentito parlare,
senza mai utilizzarlo, il
BlackBerry è sempre apparso
un telefono cellulare evoluto,
ma pensato esclusivamente
per l’utenza business, per
il professionista che ha
bisogno di restare connesso
al proprio ufficio, sullo sfondo
di un invio e ricevimento
continuo di posta elettronica.
In realtà, il BlackBerry
non è uno. I BlackBerry
sono tanti. A Bochum, in
Germania, Research In
Motion (RIM) ha lanciato
l’ultimo smartphone evoluto:
si tratta del successore del
modello Bold 9000, il 9700,
che va a completare la linea
BlackBerry Bold. Così era
stato per il capostipite della
linea, così è per 9700, che
rispetto al passato porta una
serie di elementi capaci di
avvicinare un modello tanto
business a una clientela
diversa, più glamour e
consumer, senza per questo
perdere tutte le premesse
di operatività professionale.
Nel nuovo Bold 9700,
europeo poiché ideato nel
Laboratorio di Ricerca e
Sviluppo di RIM a Bochum,
in Gemania, c’è una spiccata
attenzione ai particolari.
L’azienda canadese ha dato
ai propri clienti un modello
maneggevole, che sta su un
solo palmo, che può essere
utilizzato anche con una sola
mano. Form factor a parte,
la novità più interessante è
fornita sicuramente dalla
scomparsa della trackball,
quella fantastica pallina che
fino a ieri stava al centro
della scocca, pronta a dare
un supporto abile in fase
di navigazione di funzioni o
web. Oggi, per accattivarsi
un pubblico più attento alle
novità e al fascino, RIM
inserisce al posto della
trackball, un trackpad
sensibile al tatto, che assolve
gli stessi compiti del vecchio
sistema. Oltre all’UMTS e
HSDPA, il Bold 9700 offre
anche Bluetooth stereo
e Wi-Fi, a completare un
pacchetto di connettività del
tutto invidiabile. Il modello
diventa così un compagno
per ogni momento della
giornata: navigare online, ma
anche accedere al proprio
profilo di Facebook, dopo
aver scaricato l’applicazione
dal BlackBerry App World
(lo store online pensato per
gli smartphone BlackBerry),
diventa un’operazione
rapidissima e intuitiva. Ma
grazie agli ultimi modelli,
il BlackBerry, compreso il
Bold 9700, è cresciuto anche
il comparto multimediale,
con una fotocamera da 3.2
megapixel, e la funzionalità
di riproduzione video
seconda a nessuno. Il tutto
rappresentato su un ottimo
display da 480x360 pixel
a 2.44 pollici: nitidezza e
brillantezza sono eccellenti,
al pari del resto. Il BlackBerry
Bold è disponibile sul mercato
italiano da fine novembre/
inizio dicembre 2009.
BLACKBERRY:
BOLD BECOMES
MORE SUBTLE.
Research in Motion launches
the Blackberry Bold 9700:
compact, elegant, “European”.
For those who have heard
about it, without ever having
used one, the Blackberry
has always looked like a
phone designed exclusively
for business use; for the
professional who needs to
stay connected to their office
and be able to constantly send
and receive e-mails.
In reality, there is not only one
Blackberry. There are many
Blackberrys. In Bochum,
Germany, Research in Motion
(RIM) has launched the latest
smartphone: the 9700 is the
successor to the Bold 9000
model and will complete
the Blackberry Bold range.
The same happened with the
first style of Blackberry, and
now it is the 9700 which, in
comparison to past models,
has many features to make
a very-business like model
appealing to a different
clientele. It has glamour
and a consumer element,
but without losing all of the
requirements for professional
practicality.
The new Bold 9700 is
European, having been
created at the Laboratory of
Research and Development
of RIM in Bochum, Germany,
and there has been a lot of
attention to detail.
The Canadian company
has come up with a
manageable model, which
sits in your palm, and
can be used with just one
hand. The most interesting
development comes from
the disappearance of the
trackball; the small ball which
was previously in the centre
of the handset for use when
navigating through different
functions, or on the web.
Now, to appeal to customers
who have become more
interested in new looks and
styles, RIM have replaced
the trackball with a touchsensitive
trackpad, which acts
in the same way as the old
system. In addition to UMTS
and HSPDA, the Bold 9700
also provides Bluetooth and
Wi-Fi which complete a very
enviable connectivity package.
The model becomes,
therefore, something which
can be used at any moment:
going online is quick and
novel as you can check
your Facebook profile and
download the Blackberry App
World application (the online
store designed for Blackberry
Smartphones). Thanks to the
latest Blackberry models,
including the Bold 9700,
multimedia features have also
been developed.
There is a 3.2 megapixel
camera, plus the ability to
produce video is second to
none. This is all displayed
on the 2.44 inch, 480x360
pixel screen: the clarity and
brightness of which are
excellent. The Blackberry
Bold is to be available on
the Italian market at the end
of November/ beginning of
December 2009.

JET LAG/JET LAG
JET LAGdi/by
P. B.
contrastarli.
A pranzo carne o pesce, verdura e
frutta.
cereali, frutta e verdura in quantità; infine a cena insalata
Advice for sufferers
of jetlag.
Headaches, tiredness, even perhaps a little nausea: if this is
how you feel having just arrived in your hotel room after an
eight hour flight, you have jetlag. Quite a common problem
which only children seem to avoid. For adults however the
statistics show that 2 out of 3 people have problems as a result
of the time difference. We know that a few milligrams, or even
as little as one, of melatonin (the hormone which is naturally
produced by the pineal gland in the brain) can resolve your
problem, if taken on the evening of arrival at your destination
and for a few evenings after. A research group at a university in
Chicago have found that your diet can also help you to prevent
the effects, having studied the effect of food on travellers.
Here are their main tips for you to adopt a few days before
flying: for lunch and dinner you should alternate carefully
between carbohydrates and protein as a way of helping your
biological clock to adapt for when you land in another part of
the world where the time is significantly different from that of
your country of departure.
Protein stimulates the hormones which keep you awake while
carbohydrates induce sleepiness as they produce serotonin
and tryptophan, therefore you should follow this plan:
four days before flying you should eat foods containing
protein, obviously not forgetting fruit. For breakfast a yoghurt
or milk, or an egg, or else a toasted sandwich with ham and
cheese. For lunch, meat or fish, fruit and vegetables.
For dinner, rice or pasta with vegetables and a dessert.
As a snack during the day, fruit and a yoghurt.
Two days before, you should have cereal and biscuits; with
a tea or cappuccino and biscuits for breakfast. For lunch.
Porridge, lots of fruit and vegetables, and finally for dinner,
a mixed salad, bread and fruit. For those who do not follow
a low-calorie diet, try 60 grams of pasta (not spaghetti
bolognese!).
The day before you fly eat as detailed for four days before.
Uno splendido complesso architettonico
ricettiva elegantemente restaurata
CHI RITARDA
WHY DO WE TRAVEL BY PLANE
Perché viaggiamo in aereo Per guadagnare tempo o per
andare molto lontano. In entrambi i casi vogliamo arrivare
nell’orario previsto.
frequenti e spesso molto vistosi.
In Air Italy consideriamo puntuali
Why do we travel by plane Answer: to save time, or for long
distances. In both cases we want to arrive on time. There is
nothing worse than a delayed plane. Many people feel annoyed
because there are a lot of airline companies whose planes are
frequently late, and often with very large delays.
Air Italy is not one of those companies; time is very important
to us. We are constantly looking for new ways to improve the
punctuality of our scheduled flights so that we succeed in
always enabling you to be on time.
Compare the On-time Performance of Air Italy with that of
our competitors and you will discover that we are one of the
most punctual airlines in the world. At Air Italy we believe our
scheduled flights, which take off within 15 minutes of their
expected departure time, to be punctual; all of our data has
been taken from the log books compiled by our pilots for each
flight, before being internally processed and verified.
We do not make exceptions for bad weather, heavy air traffic,
problems with the supplier, extraordinary repairs, delays due
to earlier flights, or any other type of unforeseen eventuality…
to us being punctual means being punctual and nothing else,
without exception!
MALDIVE,
FRAMMENTI
DI PARADISOdi/by Morello Pecchioli
Frammenti di paradiso. Briciole dell’eden.
alcune minuscole, candide isole. Jules Renard, il malinconico
scrittore francese autore di Pel di Carota e di Storie Naturali
aveva ragione.
sud ovest dell’India.
vive dentro. Ci si sveglia alla ripartenza
quando lascia il posto alla nostalgia.
È scontato che in luoghi così
chiusi, emersi di poche spanne
sulla cresta dell’oceano, fatti
di sabbie candide e di qualche
ettaro di slanciate palme di cocco, di
bouganville policrome, profumate piante
E, perché no,
anche la filosofia oraziana del carpe diem. »
Fragments of heaven. Crumbs of Eden. When the Boeing 767-
300 banks to line up with the runway of Malé’s airport, in the
Maldives’ capital, the porthole frames some tiny, snow-white
islands. Jules Renard, the melancholic French author of “Carrot
Top” and “Natural Histories”, was right. He probably visited
neither the Maldives nor any of the earthly paradises scattered
all over the planet. He was, however, a very sensitive man and
inside himself he felt the primeval fragments of the lost Eden.
“On earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it.”
Here it is, the paradise. The Maldives. An archipelago that
spreads like a rosary of two thousands bone-white beads in
Pieces of Empyreum. Shiny emerald-green
grains of Elysium wrapped in a turquoise halo lay
on the cobalt-blue ocean. According to Maupassant,
travels are the door “through which
you leave reality to enter an unexplored reality
which looks like a dreams.” He was right too,
these islands can prove it. Here the dream is
not a mere illusion, it really exists. You live inside
the dream. You wake up only when you are leaving
and the dream is making room for nostalgia. It goes without
saying that in such places, so small, a few inches over the
ocean surface, made of snow-white sands and some acres of
slender coco palms, of polychrome bougainvillea plants, fragrant
hibiscus and frangipani trees, you must feel an infinite
love for the sea. A love as immense as the horizons covered
with iridescent monsoon clouds.
people favoured by the gods were sent. The ancients thought
that those islands were in the netherworld, while these atolls,
the Maldives, belong to the real world. They are perfect for
those who search a fragment of paradise, an escape from the
world, a dream. And, why not, also the Horatian philosophy of
carpe diem.
In addition to Malé, the city-island with 63,000 inhabitants,
there are small islands of fishermen who plough through the
waves with their dhoni – sailboat made of coco palms, uninhabited
atolls (if you rent a boat you can experience a Robinson
Crusoe adventure) and around a hundred atolls that host resort
villages. They all resemble each other, but of course they
are not all the same. They are hotel-islands, so depending on
their category, they offer any kind of services, bungalows and
villas (those on pile-dwellings are called watervillas, those on
the beach beachvillas).
It was Mohamed Umar Maniku, one of the pioneers of Maldivian
tourism, who understood the tourist potential of these
islands nearly 40 years ago. Also thanks to him, the economy
of the Maldivians, who used to live on fishing and few other
trades, benefited from a significant development. Maniku is
currently the president of the hotel chain “Universal Resort”:
five wonderful resorts in the Maldives and one in the Seychelles.
He has just started a new challenge: design resorts
planned by famous architects. Velassaru, the eco-chic atoll
where we are stopping over now, was designed by a Singapore
architecture company: either tucked away in the midst of
nature or suspended above water you can find restaurants, a
Baros, Maldive/Baros, Maldives.
mutano. I tramonti sono da meditazione. E’ l’ora delle volpi
volanti, pipistrelli grandi come aquiloni, imponenti e inoffensivi,
ultra-modern health spa with a Jacuzzi in its veranda, bungalows,
watervillas and beachvillas. Inside the latter, showers
and toilets are placed under the palms of the private tropical
garden.
On the Island of Baros, another jewel of the Maldivian hotel
tradition, the 30 watervillas are arranged in the shape of a
heart on an incredibly transparent and multi-coloured lagoon.
On these atolls where the waves break one after the other on
the reef, the real treasure is offered by the coral ocean bed,
which is full of tropical fishes. You will swim in a huge aquarium
among blue-cobalt fishes-surgeon, parrot fishes, Picasso
fishes, peacock groupers, Moorish idols, shoals of little green
fishes that feed on the branches of coloured corals.
But also rays and small sharks that slide by you and dart away
without even looking at you with their slanting eyes. Aristocratic
herons stroll along the strip of white sand and moorhens
go on diving into the swimming pool water. When the night
comes, colours and atmospheres change. Sunsets stir meditation:
it is the moment of flying foxes, bats as big as kites,
strong but harmless, which eat fruit. Even coconuts. It is also
the best moment for local cuisine and the beautiful dishes of
the best chefs, for the restaurant’s romantic settings, for the
flawless waiter service, the kindness and smiles of boys and
those of girls wearing saree.
LE MALDIVE A DUE
PASSI...
compagnia italiana in coincidenza immediata
comodo, check-in.
Havana a Cuba, Cancun in Messico,
La Romana e Punta Cana a Santo Domingo,
Mombasa in Kenya, Zanzibar e Mauritius
perfetta coincidenza.
Altre destinazioni da Verona- Fortaleza e
Maceio in Brasile, Nosy Be in Madagascar e
avvicinamento Air Italy in coincidenza
(Siria), Erevan (Armenia), Mosca, San
THE MALDIVES JUST
AROUND THE CORNER...
Thanks to Air Italy (www.airitaly.it), the
Maldives has become much closer to us.
These islands of the Indian Ocean can be
easily reached with flights departing from
Rome. From Verona you have immediate
connecting flights of the same Italian airline
for both inward and outward bound travels
and with only one practical check-in.
Flights to Maldives are just one of the
market challenges taken up by Air Italy,
which has chosen Verona - Valerio Catullo
airport as its hub to fly all around the world.
After a successful summer marked by the
consolidation of scheduled and charter
flights, both short and long-range, for the
upcoming winter season Air Italy offers
several new flights, intercontinental flights
included. The introduction in the air fleet
of a B767-300 ER aircraft (which is joining
its twin aircraft and two B767-200 ER
aircrafts also designed for long-distance
travels) overlaps with the debut of scheduled
and special intercontinental flights from
Verona up to 18 destinations among the
most interesting long and medium-range
journeys.
Valerio Catullo airport has never before
been the centre of such a program of longrange
flights: Havana in Cuba, Cancún in
Mexico, La Romana and Punta Cana in Santo
Domingo, Mombasa in Kenya, Zanzibar and
Mauritius will be all reached with practical
direct flights from Verona. Also passengers
travelling from Bari, Naples and Rome via
Valerio Catullo airport will be able to do the
same thanks to Air Italy’s domestic flights
plan, which aims at a perfect connection
system.
Other destinations from Verona – Fortaleza
and Maceio in Brazil, Nosy Be in Madagascar
and the above mentioned flight to Male, in
the Maldives – will be reached thanks to
flights departing from Rome with immediate
connections for both inward and outward
bound travels. The possibility to fly through
check-in will allow you to experience a
pleasant and untroubled holiday since your
departure from Verona.
As for medium-range flights, Latakia (Syria),
Erevan (Armenia), Moscow, Saint Petersburg
and Il Cairo are joining the already stable
routes to Sharm el Sheikh and Marsa Alam.
Once again, Air Italy proves itself to be one
of the most dynamic realities within the
Italian air transport system. It is a young
airline company which has made punctuality
and operational flexibility its strong points.
Air Italy clearly stakes on the development
of the Italian outbound tourism system
from Verona airport, a real hub for all the
travelers coming from the north-west
regions of the country.
This program has immediately stirred
up the interest of the Italian main tour
operators, who have already subscribed to
many important agreements for the next
winter season. Over 50,000 seats and 21
weekly flights are available from Christmas
until April to connect Verona with the whole
world. Hence our slogan: Air Italy and
Verona airport, together around the world.

L’architettura dell’hotel è in perfetta
sintonia con l’ambiente naturale e la
storia del luogo: uno stile arabeggiante,
tra biancore esterno e ombre sapienti nei
patii, nelle terrazze, nelle eleganti camere
TWIGA
If a mix of Africa, Sardinia and Maldives
could be imagined, the closest
approximation would be the beach of
Watamu’s Ora Resort Twiga. It is not a
coincidence that right opposite the hotel
there is the famous strip of sand called
“Sardinia Two”, which comes and goes
depending on the flood-tide. You will be
mesmerized by the thousand shades of
dark and light blue of the Indian Ocean
and by the white beach where, when
the tide is low, you can admire stunning
sandbanks or stroll while enjoying the
sun, the water and the sea breeze.
Malindi is just 20 minutes away, but here
it is like being surrounded by the Eden.
The only noise is the music of the wind
amid palm-trees and flowering bushes.
The hotel’s structure is in perfect
harmony with the natural environment
and the history of this place: the Arabic
style combines the outside whiteness
with the balanced shades in the patio
gardens, on the terraces and in the
rooms which all overlook the Indian
Ocean.
The Italian management of the Group
“Ora Hotels” guarantees an excellent
qualitative standard. Most of the local
staff also speaks Italian.
The meeting point and rendezvous is
the hotel’s central building, which is
topped with a makuti roof. It houses the
reception, the administrative offices,
the cash and information desks, the
boutique and the main bar next to the
living area, where you can relax reading
or have a good time playing cards and
board games with other people.
The buffet restaurant, which is located
opposite the swimming pool overlooking
the sea, offers typical Italian and local
dishes: home-made pasta, fresh grilled
fish, desserts and a lot of tropical fruit
cut on the spot.
Every week a Swahili-themed dinner and
a gala dinner are scheduled. Besides
there is the opportunity to reserve a
romantic lobster dinner (available at a
supplement).
The sea water swimming pool, which is
crossed by a wooden bridge, stretches
next to the main building with its funny
fish shape. It overlooks the hotel’s beach
and it is also equipped with a spacious
and relaxing Jacuzzi.
Both in the swimming pool area and on
the beach clients can use sun loungers
and towels offered by the resort.
Twiga Beach is not just all about sea,
sun and relax: for the most curious
tourists it is also the starting point of
trips and excursions.
Have a good trip: the dream can begin!
SICUREZZA E MANUTENZIONE
SECURITY AND SERVICING
molto a cuore.
essere sempre all’avanguardia.
modo migliore.
La nostra Compagnia investe molte
risorse sulle misure di Sicurezza, ed
effettua severi controlli per assicurarvi
che le procedure vengano applicate
correttamente.
AD
ESEMPIO,
AIR ITALY:
AIR ITALY HA SCELTO DI RISPETTARE
LE PIÙ SEVERE MISURE DI SICUREZZA.
AIR ITALY HAS CHOSEN TO RESPECT THE
STRICTEST SAFETY REGULATIONS.
sottopone a controlli tutto
il proprio personale e lo
mantiene costantemente
aggiornato con periodici corsi di Sicurezza;
e solo nelle vostre mani;
effettua i necessari controlli di Sicurezza sui propri velivoli
prima e dopo ogni volo;
antistante la cabina di pilotaggio);
protegge le cabine di pilotaggio con porte blindate antiproiettile;
The safety of our passengers and of our staff is very important to us.
In order to guarantee you the utmost relaxation during our
flights with us, Air Italy has chosen to respect the strictest
safety regulations of Civil Aviation.
Our Safety policy is the same as those adopted by the world’s biggest
and safest airlines and it is constantly updated, so it is always in the
forefront of the aviation field.
Air Italy’s Safety plan is consistent with the requirements imposed by
the Authorities of the Italian and European Civil Aviation. Our plan is
so strict that it has gained also the endorsement of the Authorities of
the US and Canada, which are among the countries with the strictest
Safety regulations.
Air Italy undertakes to provide all its
passengers with a high quality service
by training its staff, at all levels, to face
at best the issues concerning Safety.
Our Airline invests many resources on
Safety measures and it carries out strict
controls to guarantee you that all the
procedures are correctly applied.
FOR EXAMPLE
AIR ITALY:
controls all its staff and keeps it up to date with the latest
developments in the Safety field through periodical Safety
courses;
monitors your luggage during all its journey, from the checkin
to the loading on the aircraft, in order to make sure that it
is always returned to you intact and safe;
carries out the obligatory Safety controls on its aircrafts
before and after all flights;
provides for CCTV systems on its flights (cameras that allow
the pilots to monitor the area in front of the flight deck);
protects the flight decks through armoured and bullet-proof
doors;
takes even stricter measures and carries out even more indepth
investigations on the so called “security-sensitive” flights.
With Air Italy you can relax: our Security Office is always at
work to fully guarantee your safety.
Medical Information Form (MEDIF). Il MEDIF non deve avere una
data anteriore a 7 giorni dalla
partenza.
I NOSTRI
CONSIGLI
DURANTE IL VOLO Per superare
gli eventuali piccoli disagi
legati alla variazione di altitudine,
soprattutto in fase di
decollo e atterraggio, consigliamo
OUR
SUGGESTIONS
Maybe not everybody
knows that the cabin’s
air-conditioning is the main cause of dehydration and that
the pressurization is not always sufficient to reduce the feeling of
puffiness caused by the expansion of gases inside our body. We
suggest you to drink a lot of water and choose light and easily
digestible meals also before getting on board. When you are sitting,
in order to stimulate the flow of blood try to make some movements,
like ankle rotations, feet hyper-stretching and buttock
contractions.
THE PLEASURE OF FLYING To guarantee you the utmost comfort,
on our flights we use the best technologies to reduce the noise inside
the cabin, constantly improve the air quality and always keep
the cabin’s pressurization at an optimal level. Because your health
and your safety are very important to us.
BEFORE THE FLIGHT As a further proof that we pay attention to
the wellbeing of our passengers, we recommend those who suffer
from heart or pulmonary pathologies, allergies or any sort of asthma
to consult the doctor before leaving and to fill in the Medical
Information Form (MEDIF). The MEDIF form can’t be completed
more than 7 days before the departure.
DURING THE FLIGHT In order to overcome the small troubles due
to height variation, above all during the take-off and the landing,
we suggest you to take deep yawns, drink a lot of water and chew
either a gum or a candy. Finally we suggest you:
- to drink water frequently
- not to drink alcoholic drinks before and during the flight
- to wear comfortable shoes, so that your ankles are not tight
- not to cross your legs while sitting on board
- to stand up and stretch your legs frequently in the aisle
- to carry out the exercises suggested on board as much as possible.
EFFECT JET-LAG In order to fight the effects of jet lag, we suggest
you to sleep well the night before your flight and, if the stay
at destination doesn’t last over two days, to keep your biological
clock on its usual time. If the stay is longer, it is better to stick to
a healthy lifestyle to adapt to the local time as soon as possible.
Don’t forget that the recovery from jet lag is quicker if you travel
from east to west.
Sui voli lungo raggio Air Italy potrai
scegliere la nostra PRIVILEGE CLASS:
assicurati il massimo del comfort e la
soddisfazione di un servizio esclusivo ed
elegante.
On Air Italy long-range flights you will be
able to choose our PRIVILEGE CLASS:
take advantage of the best comforts and
enjoy the satisfaction of an exclusive and
elegant service.

Il centro di Holguin, Cuba/The center of Holguin, Cuba.
immobiliare all’estero
SECOND HOME
ABROAD:
THE ITALIANS ARE
DOING IT
For along time it was impossible. Then it was just a dream.
Then an idea, a desire, something you would talk about in the
bar. But for several years, Italians have found that buying a house
abroad, somewhere to spend their holiday or stay for long
periods of time, is no longer limited to the rich.
The strength of the euro against other world currencies, including
the dollar, along with simpler legislation at international
level, and more importantly, the availability of cheaper air travel,
are three factors which have opened up a market and range
of possibilities which were previously unthinkable.
Today, for the price of a two-room flat on the Adriatic coast, you
can buy apartments by the sea in many famous Mediterranean
resorts, or even a villa, in places such as Brazil, Cape Verde or
Madagascar. These resorts not only hold much natural beauty,
but they also have a low cost of living, which makes it possible
to live easily and for a price which in Italy would only cover the
essentials.
Some examples: according to “Scenari Immobiliari”, one of
the most well-known independent companies in this sector,
150,000 euro will buy you a 100 square metre apartment in Miami
or Fortaleza, a 150 square metre villa in St. Domingo, a newbuild
apartment in Havana, or a 2000 square metre villa with a
tropical garden in Nossy Be. To really satisfy yourself however,
you could alternatively buy 50 square metres in Boston or in
Varsavia’s old town.
Where does Italian investment in the housing market go
The international economic situation, and the negative trend of
financial markets, have pushed a fair number of Italian families
to take an interest in the housing market, and encouraged them
to look abroad for competitive investment opportunities.
In the first half of 2009, 14,500 houses were purchased abroad.
That is an increase of 15% in comparison with the first six
months of 2008. According to staff at “Scenari Immobiliari”,
the second half of the year should show an even more startling
trend. They predict that by the end of 2009 a total of around
all’estero opportunità di investimento competitive.
all’andamento dei vari mercati e cercano occasioni convenienti
dimensioni, quali Birmingham e Manchester.
35000 homes will have been bought and sold; the equivalent to
an increase of 19.4% compared with 2008. With an estimated
average gain of approximately 115 thousand euro, 2009 should
draw to a close having seen a total investment of around four
billion euro.
Economic difficulties have seen changes in the behaviour of
Italian buyers abroad; with buyers becoming more and more
careful and selective. Families are paying attention to market
movements and picking their moment carefully, taking into
account price drops and valuations.
Thanks to a combination of lower house prices and the strength
of the euro against the dollar, the U.S. continues to attract high
levels of interest from many families. The most sought-after
location is Miami, helped by the fact that prices this year have
fallen by an average of 35%, with some falling by as much as
50%. Sales have also gone up along the west coast, for example
in Santa Monica and Malibu, where a 30% fall in prices over one
year means the dream of owning a beach-villa, or an apartment
with a view of the Pacific can come true. Sales in New York,
where prices remain high, with the most prized areas seeing
prices fall by under 5, are in decline.
The ‘Big Apple’ is still in the lead for high level property sales.
Families with a limited budget show a growing interest in buying
one or more rooms of a “condo-hotel” which can now be found
in all of the major cities.
The massive fall in prices in the U.K. and the weakness of the
pound has seen people returning to purchase property; in
London (especially in Notting Hill where prices are down 30%
on last year) and in the mid-sized cities of Manchester and
Birmingham. In Ireland, sales are up in Dublin, one of the cities
which was hit hard by the crisis and therefore one with the best
buying opportunities.
2009 signalled a slow-down of buying in Switzerland, where the
most famous tourist spots kept prices sky-high. In places such
as St. Moritz and Crans sur Sierre deals can only be found on
mid-range apartments, in mediocre locations far from lift-stations.
It’s the same in France, especially in the prized locations
along the Côte d’Azure.
However, the first quarter of 2009 saw many mini-apartments
being bought in the central Parisian areas. This was a result
of falling house prices and how easy it is to rent them out for a
good return.
Following a lean period, acquisition of property in the Mediterranean
has picked up again, especially in Spain and Greece.
The Spanish market was hit hard during the crisis and the price
of property, and of general costs, dropped dramatically. Italians
mainly buy in capital cities, in the Costa del Sol and in the Balearic
Islands; especially in Ibiza and Formentera.
The “boom” of the islands is also true of Greece, with Italian families
tending to buy in the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. Most
of the contracts have been for properties on the most famous
islands: Mykonos and Rhodes; but there’s also been an increase
in Paros which has been able to be competitive thanks to the »

Dopo un periodo di calo, aumentano
nuovamente gli acquisti nelle località
sul Mediterraneo, soprattutto in Spagna
e Grecia.
Turchia, concentrati quasi esclusivamente
nella zona di Antalya.
Nell’Europa dell’Est continua a diminuire
Repubblica Ceca, Polonia e Repubbliche
Croazia, favorite dalla vicinanza all’Italia.
recent relaxation of quotas.
Sales are also on the increase in Turkey,
here nearly all in the Antalya region.
In Eastern Europe interest in the most
well-established markets has continued
to decrease: in the Czech Republic,
Poland and the Baltic States. These do
account however for a small percentage
of Italian purchases. Meanwhile in
Slovenia and Croatia (Italy’s neighbours),
acquisitions are on the up.
As for ex-EU countries, interest in Dubai
has fallen, with quotations dropping
dramatically. However, with lots of the
projects here being of low-quality, there’s
a risk that property won’t gain much, if
anything, in value over the next few years.
The upcoming World Cup in 2010 in South
Africa has boosted the housing market
and a growing number of Italian families
have felt the attraction. Property sales in
Morocco are in slight decline.
In 2009 property sales in Latin America
went up; with interest growing in Brazil
and Argentina, but purchasing is still
concentrated in the luxury areas of Punta
de l’Este in Uruguay, still the international
jet setter’s favourite.
Finally, interest is also growing in the
Caribbean where, as well as a slight
increase in buying in St. Domingo, investments
are also starting to be made in
Cuba. In general, the law in Cuba prevents
foreigners from buying property there,
but recently the government has allowed
Italian-Cuban companies to build a
certain number of houses for the foreign
market, excluding Americans.
This could potentially be a fantastic
long-term investment opportunity, even
if buyers have to check that, aside from
the government go ahead, the companies
do have a valid construction permit. If
this permit is missing, you run the risk of
losing the entire investment.
