Trieste, porto franco e città di lazzaretti. Il primo 

ad essere costruito fu il Lazzaretto di San Carlo, 

oggi chiamato Lazzaretto Vecchio, dove ha sede 

l’attuale Museo del Mare, seguito da quello di Santa 

Teresa, nei pressi di Roiano, e di San Bartolomeo, a 

Muggia. Il molo di Santa Teresa venne realizzato 

per proteggere la Sacchetta (mandracchio) dai 

venti di ponente. 

Trieste, free-port and city of lazarets. The first 

quarantine hospital to be built was the one 

dedicated to San Carlo which is now called the 

Lazzaretto Vecchio and today houses the Museum 

of the Sea, followed by the Lazzaretto di Santa 

Teresa built near Roiano, and San Bartolomeo 

at Muggia. The pier of Santa Teresa was built to 

protect the basin (Mandracchio) from the wind.

Trieste, per sua stessa conformazione, 

è un abbraccio al mare. La città è tutta 

protesa verso il golfo, quasi ad accogliere 

l’ultimo lembo ondoso dell’Adriatico, le cui 

acque hanno contribuito a scrivere molta 

parte della storia del territorio. Una storia 

che lo promuove a potenza adriatica a 

partire da inizio Settecento, quando Carlo 

VI d’Asburgo, vi istituisce il porto franco, 

ovvero una zona dove lo scambio di merci 

può avvenire senza le vessazioni di dazi e 

imposte. Prima di allora, dalle scomparse 

vestigia del porto del Municipium 

romano fino al XVIII secolo, l’assetto del 

porto triestino non era molto cambiato, 

fatta eccezione per il bacino ristretto del 

Mandracchio, creato presumibilmente verso 

la metà del XVII secolo. 

Grazie alla protezione asburgica e ai redditizi 

traffici marittimi, però, la città fiorisce e nel 

1753 viene fondata da Maria Teresa d’Austria 

anche l’Imperial Regia Scuola Nautica. La 

formazione delle nuove leve - che ricevono

un prezioso apporto dal costruttore Gaspare 

Tonelli, giunto a insegnare nell’istituto a 

inizio Ottocento - assieme all’invenzione del 

motore a elica concepito da Joseph Ressel, 

daranno un decisivo apporto triestino 

alla nascita della cantieristica moderna, 

portando all’affermazione di un’industria 

navale a tutt’oggi tra le più importanti al 

mondo. 

A partire dal 1730 vengono costruiti i 

primi lazzaretti, il Canal Grande [5] e i moli 

di Santa Teresa e di San Carlo, in seguito 

ribattezzato Audace, dal quale si gode una 

splendida visuale sulla piazza Unità e sui 

vicini palazzi affacciati sul mare. Per circa 

un secolo, però, i cambiamenti avvenuti 

nel porto rimangono poco significativi, 

nonostante il ruolo di Trieste sia diventato 

sempre più importante nella copertura 

delle rotte commerciali tra il Mar Nero e i 

porti dell’Europa occidentale. 

Nel 1836 fa il suo ingresso in città il Lloyd 

Austriaco, la prima grande società di

navigazione a vapore nell’Adriatico, e a 

metà Ottocento, per fronteggiare la crescita 

del traffico marittimo il Governo imperiale 

intraprende la costruzione di un Porto 

Nuovo, servito da una stazione più ampia 

e moderna. La svolta è il collegamento 

ferroviario con Vienna, realizzato nel 

1857, che promuove finalmente Trieste a 

principale porto dell’impero austroungarico 

in virtù della sua posizione strategica. 

Da allora, lo sviluppo urbanistico che 

accompagna la città verso il Novecento 

non fa che assecondarne la vocazione 

imperiale e marittimo portuale. Lo si 

vede nell’area delle Rive [4], la cui anima 

balneare e ricreativa viene sacrificata ad un 

assetto funzionale, ma anche attraverso le 

testimonianze architettoniche disseminate 

lungo la fascia costiera, dal maestoso Faro 

della Vittoria agli splendidi castelli che 

impreziosiscono il profilo del Golfo triestino. 

Trieste, because of its position and very 

layout, embraces the sea. The whole 

city faces the gulf, and welcomes the last 

waves of the Adriatic – the sea which has 

played such a large part in writing the 

history of the city and its surrounding area. 

History which demonstrates the power of 

the Adriatic starting from the early 1700’s 

when the Hapsburg Emperor Charles VI 

established the free port, that is an area 

where the exchange of goods could take 

place without the imposition of normal 

taxes and duties. Until then, the port of 

Trieste had changed little since the days of 

the port of the Roman Municipium, with 

the solitary exception of the narrow harbour 

known as the Mandracchio which is 

thought to date from the mid-17th century 

Thanks to the protection of the Hapsburgs 

and the profitable maritime trade the 

city flourished and in 1753 Maria Theresa 

of Austria founded the Imperial Nautical 

School. The training of the new generations 

was given an important boost when the 

ship-builder Gaspare Tonelli arrived to teach 

there at the beginning of the 1800’s which, 

along with the invention of the propeller 

engine by Joseph Ressel, gave a decisive 

Triestine contribution to the birth of the 

modern ship-yard and led to the creation 

of a local ship-building industry which even 

today remains among the most important 

in the world. 

Starting from 1730, a series of quarantine 

hospitals were built, as well as the so-called 

Canal Grande [5] and the piers of Santa 

Teresa and San Carlo – this later re-named 

Audace and from where visitors and 

local people can enjoy a splendid view 

of Piazza Unità d’Italia and its imposing 

buildings overlooking the sea. However, 

for a century the changes brought about 

in the port remained limited despite the 

fact that Trieste was becoming increasingly 

important on the trade route between the 

Black Sea and western Europe. 

But in 1836, Lloyd Austriaco - the first major 

steamship company in the Adriatic – was 

established in the city, and in the middle of 

the 19th century the Imperial government 

decided to construct the Porto Nuovo 

served by a larger and more modern railway 

station. The major development was the 

railway link to Vienna, completed in 1857, 

which finally established Trieste as the 

main port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire 

by virtue of its strategic position. After 

that, the urban growth which led the city 

towards the 20th century helped to extend 

its Imperial and maritime roles. This can be 

seen in the area of the Rive (sea-front) [4] 

whose spirit as a place of recreation and 

swimming was sacrificed in favour of a 

more practical function, and also from the 

architectural styles stretching along the 

coast, from the majestic lighthouse (Faro 

della Vittoria) to the splendid castles which 

make the view over the Gulf of Trieste so 

special.

Gegend einen Großteil ihrer Geschichte 

verdankt. Eine Geschichte, die die Stadt 

mit der Entscheidung Kaiser Karls VI. von 

Habsburg, Triest zur freien Hafenstadt zu 

erklären, Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts 

zu einer adriatischen Macht macht: Hier 

kann Warenhandel ohne die Schikanen 

von Zoll und Steuern betrieben werden. 

Davor, also in der Zeit vom nicht erhaltenen 

römischen Hafen bis ins 18. Jahrhundert, 

war das Aussehen des Hafens von Triest 

ziemlich gleich geblieben; nur das enge 

Hafenbecken Mandracchio ist vermutlich 

gegen Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts 

hinzugekommen. 

Unter dem habsburgischen Protektorat 

und dank des einträglichen Schiffsverkehrs 

blüht die Stadt auf, und 1735 gründet 

Maria Theresia von Österreich die k.u.k. 

Nautikschule. Die Ausbildung der neuen 

Jahrgänge, denen der von Anfang des 

19. Jahrhunderts an als Lehrer im Institut 

tätige Konstrukteur Gaspare Tonelli 

zur Seite steht, und die Erfindung der 

Schiffsschraube durch Joseph Ressel 

spielen eine entscheidende Rolle bei der 

Entwicklung des modernen Schiffsbaus 

in Triest und machen diesen bis heute 

zu einem der wichtigsten auf der Welt. 

Ab 1730 werden die ersten Lazarette, der 

Canal Grande [5] und die Hafenkais Santa 

Teresa und San Carlo gebaut. Letzterer 

bekommt später den Namen Audace und 

bietet eine herrliche Aussicht auf die Piazza 

Unità und die umliegenden Palazzi an der 

Uferpromenade. Etwa ein Jahrhundert 

lang bleiben die Veränderungen des Hafen 

ohne große Bedeutung, obwohl Triest im 

Handelsverkehr zwischen dem Schwarzen 

Meer und den westeuropäischen Häfen 

eine immer größere Rolle spielt. 

1836 kommt der Österreichische 

Lloyd nach Triest, die erste große 

Dampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft der Adria, 

und Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts lässt 

die kaiserliche Regierung einen neuen 

Hafen mit Anschluss an einen größeren 

und moderneren Bahnhof bauen, um so 

dem wachsenden Seeverkehr gerecht 

zu werden. Die Wende geschieht mit der 

Bahnverbindung Triest-Wien, die 1857 

realisiert wird und Triest dank seiner 

strategischen Lage endlich zum wichtigsten 

Hafen von Österreich-Ungarn macht. 

Seither steht die Stadtentwicklung bis ins 

20. Jahrhundert im Zeichen des Seehafens 

und der kaiserlichen Berufung der Stadt. 

Das erkennt man auch am Ufer, den 

sogenannten Rive [4], deren ursprünglicher 

Bade- und Erholungscharakter funktionellen 

Strukturen weichen musste, aber auch 

an den architektonischen Zeugnissen am 

Meer: vom imposanten Leuchtturm Faro 

della Vittoria bis hin zu den prächtigen 

Schlössern, die das Profil des Golfs von Triest 

bereichern.

Sin dal 1903, Trieste vanta uno yacht 

club forte e vitale, tra i maggiori centri 

di aggregazione del movimento nautico 

italiano, soprattutto velico, ma non solo. 

Nel 1923, viene fondata una rivista che 

racconta le imprese di mare anche a chi 

non appartiene al club: sono le onde del 

golfo triestino a cullare quella neonata 

Vela e motore che diventerà riferimento 

e organo ufficiale dei circoli velici italiani 

dove si va sviluppando una tradizione 

nautica e diportistica. Nel 1925, il periodico 

si fa promotore della Federazione Adriatica 

dello Yachting, uno degli embrioni da cui 

sarebbe poi nata la Federazione Nazionale. 

A dare ulteriore lustro alla tradizione 

triestina contribuisce la Barcolana, storica 

regata velica istituita nel 1969. Sono ormai 

lontani gli anni in cui la competizione si 

giocava soprattutto tra circoli locali come 

la Società Triestina della Vela, lo Yacht Club 

Adriaco [6, 7] e la Società Velica di Barcola 

e Grignano, ancora oggi organizzatrice 

dell’evento che ha ormai una visibilità 

mediatica mondiale e vede veleggiare 

professionisti di fama internazionale come i 

big della Coppa America. 

Trieste has been able to boast a 

dynamic, thriving yacht club, since 

1903, and it is now one of the largest of its 

kind in Italy and a major centre for sailing 

and more. A magazine founded in 1923 

speaks about the sea, even to those not 

associated with the club: the waves of the 

Gulf of Trieste protected the new-born Sails 

and Motors (Vela e motore) as it grew to 

become the official organ of Italian sailing

as a tradition of sailing and sea excursions 

developed. In 1925, the magazine created 

the Federazione Adriatica dello Yachting, 

one of the associations which led to the 

birth of the national federation. Another 

bright-point in the Trieste sailing tradition 

is the Barcolana, the now-historic sailing 

regatta established in 1969. The days when 

this event was a purely local competition 

between local sailing clubs such as the 

Società Triestina della Vela, the Yacht Club 

Adriaco [6, 7] and the Società Velica di 

Barcola e Grignano are long gone, and 

although the organization remains in the 

hands of the founders of the event, the 

Barcolana today is known worldwide and 

attracts professional sailors such as famous 

names from the America Cup. 

Seit 1903 weist die Stadt einen 

bedeutenden und vitalen Jachtclub 

auf. Es ist eines der größten italienischen 

Zentren für die italienischen Nautik- und 

vor allem Segelbegeisterten, aber nicht 

nur. 1923 wird eine Zeitschrift gegründet, 

die die Aktivitäten auf dem Meer auch 

denen näherbringt, die nicht zum Club 

gehören. Die Wellen des Golfes von Triest 

tragen die neu gegründete Zeitung Vela e 

motore (Segel und Motor) und machen sie 

zu einem Bezugspunkt und zum offiziellen 

Organ der italienischen Segelvereine, in 

denen im Laufe der Zeit eine Segel- und 

Freizeittradition entsteht. 1925 initiiert die 

Zeitschrift die Federazione Adriatica dello 

Yachting (Adriatischer Jachtverband), eine 

der Gruppen, die später zur Federazione 

Nazionale, dem Nationalen Jachtverband,

werden sollte. Für weiteren Ruhm der 

Triester Tradition sorgt die Barcolana, 

eine historische Segelregatta, die 1969 

ins Leben gerufen wurde. Lang ist es 

mittlerweile her, als der Wettbewerb noch 

unter den lokalen Vereinen, wie der Società 

Triestina della Vela, dem Yacht Club Adriaco 

[6, 7] und der Società Velica di Barcola e 

Grignano ausgetragen wurde, die noch 

heute die Veranstaltung organisieren – 

eine Regatta, die mittlerweile weltweit 

in den Medien präsent ist und verfolgt 

wird und bei der sich internationale Profis 

wie z. B. die Großen vom America’s Cup, 

miteinander messen. 


Fondatori di Vela e motore sono stati Carlo Strena 

e Bruno Pangrazi, già famoso negli ambienti 

velici locali grazie alla lunga serie di imbarcazioni 

utilizzate per gareggiare nel golfo di Trieste, tutte 

battezzate col nome di Falena. 

The founders of Vela e motore were Carlo Strena 

and Bruno Pangrazi, who were already famous on 

the local sailing scene thanks to a long series of 

boats used in competitions in the Gulf of Trieste, 

all of which bore the name Falena. 

Die Gründer der Zeitschrift Vela e Motore waren 

Carlo Strena und Bruno Pangrazi, die den lokalen 

Seglern wegen ihrer großen Anzahl an Schiffen – 

sie waren alle auf den Namen Falena (Nachtfalter) 

getauft – für die Wettkämpfe im Golf von Triest 

wohlbekannt waren.

“Srecita l’iscrizione scolpita all’ingresso 

del Faro della Vittoria, sopra all’ancora 

della prima nave italiana entrata nel 1918 

nel porto di Trieste, il cacciatorpediniere 

Audace. L’imponente edificio in pietra bianca, 

costruito con la duplice funzione di faro e 

di monumento ai marinai caduti durante la 

Grande guerra, è oggi gestito dal Ministero 

della Difesa e aperto al pubblico. Domina il 

profilo costiero della città dall’altura di Gretta 

e si appoggia a quello che era il torrione 

principale dell’austroungarico Forte Kressich 

per elevarsi fin quasi a 70 metri dal suolo. La 

portata del suo fascio di luce raggiunge le 35 

miglia. 

In cima al faro, la vittoria è impersonata da un 

angelo alato, abilmente costruito in rame da 

Giacomo Srebot su progetto dello scultore 

Giovanni Mayer. La statua, di oltre 7 metri 

d’altezza, è imperniata su un’asta di acciaio 

che, grazie al movimento di alcuni tiranti

the entrance to the Victory Lighthouse, 

above an anchor from the first Italian 

warship to enter the port of Trieste in 

1918, the destroyer Audace. This imposing, 

white-stone structure was built with a dual 

purpose: that of a traditional lighthouse 

and that of a monument to the sailors lost 

during the Great War. Today it is managed 

by the Ministry of Defence and is open to 

the public. It dominates the costal profile of 

the city from the Gretta plateau, and rises 

above the former main tower of the Austro- 

Hungarian Fort Kressich to reach a height of 

70 metres above ground level. Its beam can 

be seen from 35 miles away. 

At the top of the lighthouse, victory is shown 

as a winged angel, built out of copper 

by Giacomo Srebot to the designs of the 

sculptor Giovanni Mayer. The statue is over 

7 metres high and is supported by a steel 

beam which, thanks to the movement of a 

system of internal cables, enables the statue 

to withstand the powerful Trieste wind - the 

famous Bora – by changing the inclination of 

the metal wings depending on the direction 

of the wind.

1918 als erstes italienisches Schiff in den 

Hafen von Triest eingelaufen ist: der Zerstörer 

Audace. Das beeindruckende Gebäude aus 

weißem Stein mit der Doppelfunktion als 

Leuchtturm und Denkmal für die im großen 

Krieg gefallenen Matrosen wird heute 

vom Verteidigungsministerium betrieben 

und steht auch der Öffentlichkeit offen. Er 

beherrscht das Küstenprofil der Stadt von der 

Anhöhe Gretta und thront auf den Resten 

eines früheren Wachturms der österreichungarischen 

Festung Kressich mit einer Höhe 


von fast 70 Metern. Die Reichweite seines 

Lichtstrahls beträgt 35 Meilen. 

An der Leuchtturmspitze erkennt man einen 

Engel, der den Sieg personifiziert und von 

Giacomo Srebot nach einem Projekt des 

Bildhauers Giovanni Mayer in Kupfer realisert 

wurde. Die über sieben Meter hohe Statue 

ruht auf einem Stahlstab, wodurch sie auch 

dank einiger Zugseile der mächtigen Bora 

standhält, indem sich die Neigung der Flügel 

nach dem Wind richten.

all’inaugurazione del faro, simbolicamente acceso 

per la prima volta da Vittorio Emanuele III nel 1927.

event watched the inauguration of the lighthouse 

which was lit symbolically by king Victor Emanuel 

III in 1927. 

Eine feiernde Menge hat beim Klang der Sirenen 

der auf dem Meer unter dem Leuchtturm 

zusammengekommenen Zivil- und Militärschiffe 

der Eröffnung des Leuchtturms beigewohnt, als 

dieser von König Vittorio Emanuele III. 1927 zum 

ersten Mal entzündet wurde.

Il più antico faro di Trieste è la Lanterna, 

che sorveglia il Molo Fratelli Bandiera 

e poggia le proprie fondamenta sullo 

Scoglio dello Zucco, per evitare il quale 

già gli antichi romani avevano ideato 

un sistema di segnalazioni. L’edificio, 

progettato da Matteo Pertsch, è sorretto 

da una colonna in pietra che si erge su una 

torre massimiliana merlata. Simbolo della 

città mercantile, aveva anche una funzione 

difensiva rispetto all’ingresso del Porto 

Vecchio e per molti decenni lo scoccare 

delle ore 12 fu annunciato dallo sparo del 

suo cannone. Entrato in servizio nel 1833, 

il faro smise di avere l’originaria rilevanza 

con la costruzione del Faro della Vittoria 

e fu infine dismesso nel 1969, da allora 

funziona solamente come fanale foraneo. 

L’ampia base cilindrica, oggi sede dalla 

sezione triestina della Lega Navale, è stata 

trasformata da un recente restauro in una 

biblioteca tematica dedicata al mare. 

The oldest lighthouse in Trieste is the 

so-called Lantern which looks out 

over the pier called Fratelli Bandiera and 

stands near the Scoglio dello Zucco (cliffs), 

to avoid which the ancient Romans had 

used an earlier system of warnings to help 

sailors. The structure, designed by Matteo 

Pertsch, is formed by a stone column and 

a crenellated, Maximilian tower. It was 

not only the symbol of the mercantile 

city, but also had a defensive function, 

positioned as it was at the entrance to 

the old port (Porto Vecchio), and for many 

years a cannon fired from the Lantern 

told the local citizens it was twelve o’clock 

mid-day. It was officially opened in 1833, 

but lost its original importance with the 

construction of the Faro della Vittoria 

(Victory Lighthouse) and was finally 

withdrawn from service in 1969, since 

when it has served only as a external light. 

Its wide, cylindrical base – which today is 

the headquarters of the Trieste branch of 

the Italian Naval Association – has recently 

been refurbished and turned into a 

themed library dedicated to the sea. 

Der älteste Leuchtturm in Triest ist 

die Lanterna über dem Hafenkai 

Fratelli Bandiera, deren Fundament auf 

dem Felsen Scoglio dello Zucco ruht, 

vor dem schon die Römer die Schiffe 

mit einer Signalsystem warnten. Das 

Gebäude wurde von Matteo Pertsch 

entworfen, besteht aus einer Steinsäule, 

die auf einem maximilianischen Turm 

mit Zinnen emporragt. Als Symbol der 

Handelsstadt hatte der Leuchtturm auch 

eine Verteidigungsfunktion gegenüber 

dem Alten Hafen und viele Jahrzehnte lang 

wurde um 12 Uhr die Mittagsstunde durch 

einen Schuss der dazugehörigen Kanone 

angekündigt. 1883 trat die Lanterna ihren 

Dienst an, der erst mit dem Bau des Faro 

della Vittoria an Bedeutung verlor. Seit 

1969 dient der Leuchtturm nicht mehr als 

solcher, sondern als normale Hafenlaterne.

Der zylinderförmige Grundstock, in dem 

heute der Schiffsverband von Triest 

seinen Sitz hat, wurde bei jüngsten 

Restaurierungsarbeiten in eine Bibliothek 

zum Thema Meer umgebaut. 


Fino al secolo scorso, oltre a quella della Lanterna, 

esistevano a Trieste altre due torri massimiliane, 

erette con funzioni difensive e di controllo, sia 

all’ingresso del Lazzaretto di Santa Teresa, sia sul 

colle di San Vito, nell’omonimo forte. 

Until the last century, in addition to the Lantern 

there were two other Maximilian towers in Trieste - 

erected with the dual function of defence and the 

control of incoming ships – one at the entrance 

to the Lazzaretto di Santa Teresa and the other on 

the San Vito hill in the fortress of the same name. 

Bis ins letzte Jahrhundert existierten in Triest neben 

der Lanterna noch zwei weitere maximilianische 

Türme, die ebenfalls eine Verteidigungs- und 

Kontrollfunktion hatten, und zwar am Eingang des 

Lazaretts Santa Teresa und auf dem San Vito-Hügel 

in der gleichnamigen Festung.

Anche Trieste ha il suo Canal Grande, 

con imbocco dal Bacino di San Giorgio, 

nel Porto Vecchio. A tutt’oggi navigabile, 

s’insinua nel cuore del borgo voluto a metà 

del XVIII secolo da Maria Teresa d’Austria. 

Realizzato nel 1756 dal veneziano Matteo 

Pirona scavando il collettore principale delle 

saline originariamente presenti sul luogo. 

Inizialmente si trattava di una vera e propria 

darsena che arrivava fino all’attuale chiesa 

neoclassica di Sant’Antonio Nuovo. La 

parte terminale del canale fu interrata con 

le macerie della città vecchia dopo la fine 

della prima guerra mondiale e corrisponde 

all’omonima piazza. Nell’interramento, sotto 

l’attuale fontana, è stato sepolto un piccolo 

torpediniere abbandonato dalla marina 

austriaca, del quale nessuno rivendicò la 

proprietà. 

La presenza di tre ponti girevoli consentiva 

ai velieri di giungere fino al cuore della città 

e per scaricare le merci. Oggi dei tre ponti 

ne sopravvivono due ma rimane il nome 

dell’attuale piazza Ponterosso a memoria del 

colore di uno dei tre originari. 

Sopra il ponte centrale, una statua riproduce 

un frettoloso James Joyce forse diretto verso 

la sua abitazione nel vicino palazzo che ospita 

oggi un caffè a lui dedicato. Nei decenni scorsi 

le vivaci venderigole (venditrici in dialetto) 

offrivano frutta, verdura e fiori in un mercato 

allestito all’aperto, oggi ancora presente. La 

fontana della piazza era alimentata dall’acqua 

di una sorgente del rione di San Giovanni, 

il cui putto è stato dunque ribattezzato dai 

triestini Giovanin de Ponterosso [13]. 

Trieste also has its Grand Canal, with its 

mouth at the Bacino di San Giorgio, in 

the Porto Vecchio. It is still used, and it leads 

directly into the heart of the district built in 

the middle of the 18th century under the 

instructions of Maria Theresa of Austria. It was 

completed in 1756 by the Venetian Matteo 

Pirona by digging out the main salt-pit which 

had originally been on the site. In its early 

days it was a true harbour and extended as 

far as the neo-classical church of Sant’Antonio 

Nuovo. The upper section was later filled in 

using debris from the Old Town at the end 

of the First World War, and is now a square of 

the same name. A small Austrian warship was 

among the debris to be buried, since no-one 

wanted to claim ownership. 

Three turntable bridges allowed sailing ships 

to go right into the very heart of the city to 

unload their goods. Of the three, only two 

remain, but the present name of the square, 

Ponterosso (= red bridge), reminds us of the 

colour of one of the three originals. 

On the bridge can be seen the statue James 

Joyce, hurrying towards his apartment in 

the nearby building, which today houses 

a café dedicated to his memory. For many 

years there has been a lively street market for 

fruit vegetables and flowers here, where the 

traders (venderigole in the local dialect) still call 

out their wares. The fountain in the centre of 

the square was fed by water from the spring 

in the district of San Giovanni, which led the 

local people to give the nickname Giovanin de 

Ponterosso [13] to the small statue. 

Auch Triest hat seinen Canal Grande; 

er beginnt im Hafenbecken San 

Giorgio im Alten Hafen. Er ist noch heute 

schiffbar und schiebt sich bis ins Stadtviertel 

vor, das Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts auf 

Wunsch von Maria Theresia von Österreich 

gebaut wurde. Der Kanal wurde 1756 vom 

Venezianer Matteo Pirona realisiert. Er ließ den 

damaligen Kollektor der dort befindlichen 

Salinen ausheben und schuf ursprünglich 

ein Hafenbecken, das bis zur heutigen 

neoklassizistischen Kirche Sant’Antonio 

Nuovo reichte. Das Endstück des Kanals 

wurde dann nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg 

mit dem Schutt der Altstadt zugeschüttet, 

wodurch der gleichnamige Platz entstand. 

Unter dem heutigen Springbrunnen des 

Platzes wurde damals ein kleiner verlassener 

und besitzerloser Torpedobootzerstörer der 

österreichischen Marine zugeschüttet. 

Drei Drebrücken ermöglichten den 


Segelschiffen das Verladen ihrer Waren im 

Herzen der Stadt. Heute sind nur noch zwei 

Brücken übrig, aber der Name der heutigen 

Piazza Ponterosso, auf Deutsch rote Brücke, 

erinnert noch an die rote Farbe einer der drei 

ursprünglichen Brücken. 

Auf der mittleren Brücke steht die Statue von 

James Joyce, der schnellen Schritts vielleicht 

gerade zu seiner Wohnung im naheliegenen 

Palazzo eilt, der heute das gleichnamige 

Café beherbergt. In den letzten Jahrzehnten 

boten die lebhaften Venderigole (Triestinisch 

für Verkäuferinnen) auf dem noch heute 

stattfindenden Markt Obst, Gemüse und 

Blumen feil. Der Brunnen auf dem Platz wurde 

vom Wasser einer Quelle des Stadtviertels San 

Giovanni gespeist, weshalb die Puttenfigur 

des Brunnens von den Triestern Giovanin de 

Ponterosso [13] getauft wurde. 


Sulla piazza e sul Canale, oltre alla casa di Joyce, 

si affacciano altri edifici degni di interesse, come 

il tempio ortodosso di San Spiridione o come i 

Palazzi Genel, Carciotti, Aedes, soprannominato il 

grattacielo rosso, e Gopcevic, contraddistinto da 

una vivace facciata intonacata in bianco e rosso, 

oggi sede espositiva del museo teatrale Carlo 

Schmidl. 

In addition to James Joyce’s home, the square 

and the canal are overlooked by many interesting 

buildings, such as the Serbian Orthodox Church 

of San Spiridione and the Genel, Carciotti, Aedes 

(called the “red skyscraper”) and Gopcevic Palaces, 

this with its red and white façade and which today 

houses the theatrical museum Carlo Schmidl. 

Rund um den Platz und am Canal Grande befinden 

sich neben dem Wohnhaus von James Joyce 

noch weitere Gebäude von großem Interesse, 

wie z. B. die orthodoxe Kirche San Spiridione oder 

die Palazzi Genel, Carcotti, Aedes – auch roter 

Wolkenkratzer genannt – und Gopcevic, der durch 

seine weiß-rot gestrichene Fassade auffält und 

heute Ausstellungsort des Theatermuseums Carlo 

Schmidl ist.

Nell’Ottocento Trieste, sviluppatasi come 

centro marittimo con il declino di 

Venezia, è riconosciuta luogo strategico per 

la costituzione di officine e cantieri navali. 

Già a inizio Settecento cresce lo squero 

che nel 1840 costituirà il San Marco, primo 

importante cantiere triestino, e diventerà, 

dal 1858, cuore dell’Arsenale Lloyd, fucina 

di numerose unità militari dell’impero 

austroungarico. 

Nel 1929 le azioni della società sono 

acquistate dalla Banca Commerciale 

Italiana, già proprietaria del Cantiere Navale 

Triestino, fondato a Monfalcone nel 1908 

dalla famiglia Cosulich per costruire le navi 

della propria compagnia. L’accorpamento, 

assieme agli stabilimenti di Venezia e Pola, 

dà vita ai Cantieri Riuniti dell’Adriatico, polo 

navalmeccanico tra i più avanguardistici al 

mondo. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, 

entrano in gioco l’IRI, la FIAT e l’Italcantieri, 

fino al 1984, quando la Fincantieri ingloba 

questa e altre otto società italiane operanti 

nell’industria navale divenendo il più 

importante complesso cantieristico del 

Mediterraneo. 

Da fine anni Novanta, il cantiere navale San 

Marco è parzialmente gestito dal Nuovo 

Arsenale Cartubi, mentre al San Rocco, 

dopo alcuni passaggi di proprietà, viene 

realizzato un porto turistico attiguo al 

cantiere, che oltre a riparare grandi barche 

a vela e yacht a motore, dal 2010, ha ripreso 

l’attività produttiva con la costruzione di 

imbarcazioni a basso impatto ambientale. 

In the 1800’s and with the decline of 

Venice as a naval power, Trieste developed 

as a strategic centre for ship-building and 

naval workshops. The shipyard which in 

1840 was to become the San Marco, the 

most important in Trieste, had already been 

founded in the early 1700’s, and in 1858 

it went on to become the heart of the 

Arsenale Lloyd, the home of many of the 

Austro-Hungarian Navy’s largest warships. 

In 1929, the company’s shares were bought 

by the Banca Commerciale Italiana which 

already owned the major shipyard in nearby 

Monfalcone which had been founded in 

1908 by the Cosulich family to build ships 

for their own shipping line. These were 

amalgamated and along with shipyards 

in Venice and Pola formed the Cantieri 

Riuniti dell’Adriatico which was able to 

offer the whole range of shipbuilding 

services which at the time was among 

the most advanced in the world. After the 

Second World War, FIAT, Italcantieri and 

the state finance company IRI also became 

involved, until 1984 when the presentday 

company, Fincantieri, took over all 

the assets and those of eight other Italian 

companies in the ship-building industry to 

create the most important ship-building 

conglomerate in the Mediterranean. 

Since the end of the 1990’s, the San Marco 

shipyard has been partially managed by 

Nuovo Arsenale Cartubi while after several 

changes of ownership the San Rocco has 

become a tourist port next to the shipyard 

which not only carries out repairs on 

large sailing and motor yachts but has, 

since 2010, re-started its original activity 

by building boats of low environmental 

impact. 

Im 19. Jahrhundert wird Triest, das sich 

mit dem Niedergang Venedigs zum 

Zentrum des Mittelmeeres entwickelt, als 

strategischer Ort für die Ansiedlung von 

Schiffswerften erkannt. Schon Anfang des 

18. Jahrhunderts vergrößert sich die Wert, 

die 1840 zur ersten wichtigen Werft in Triest 

mit dem Namen San Marco und 1858 zum 

Herzstück des Arsenale Lloyd wird, der 

Schmiede zahlreicher Militäreinheiten von 

Österreich-Ungarn. 

1929 werden die Aktien der Gesellschaft 

von der Banca Commerciale Italiana 

erworben, die früher schon einmal 

Eigentümer der 1908 von der Familie 

Cosulich in Monfalcone gegründeten Werft 

Cantiere Navale Triestino war. Durch die 

Zusammenlegung mit den Niederlassungen 

in Venedig und Pula entstehen die Cantieri 

Riuniti dell’Adriatico, ein Pot mit einer der 

fortschrittlichsten Schiffsmechaniken der 

Welt. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg kommen 

auch IRI, FIAT und Italcantieri ins Spiel, und 

zwar bis zum Jahr 1984, in dem Fincantieri 

diese und weitere acht italienische 

Schiffsbaugesellschaften übernimmt und 

somit zum wichtigsten Werftkomplex im 

Mittelmeer wird. 

Seit den 90-er Jahren wird die Werft San 

Marco teilweise von der Werft Nuovo 

Arsenale Cartubi betrieben, während in 

San Rocco neben der Werft, die nicht nur 

große Segelschiffe und Motorjachten 

repariert, sondern seit 2010 auch wieder 

ihre Produktion umweltschonender Schiffe 

aufnimmt, nach einigen Besitzerwechseln 

ein Jachthafen realisiert wird. 


L’innovazione tecnologica ha naturalmente un 

peso molto rilevante anche in ambito cantieristico, 

dai programmi di riduzione del consumo 

energetico e di impatto ambientale alla crescita di 

distretti tecnologici che condividono e mettono in 

rete le proprie conoscenze al fine di migliorare la 

filiera produttiva. 

Technological innovation naturally carries some 

weight in the ship-building industry, from 

programmes to reduce energy consumption 

and environmental impact to the growth of 

technological parks which share and put online 

their knowledge in order to improve the 

production flow. 

Die technischen Innovationen haben natürlich 

auch im Bereich der Schiffswerften eine zentrale 

Bedeutung: angefangen von den Projekten 

zur Senkung des Energieverbrauchs und zur 

Umweltverträglichkeit bis zu Technikbüros, die 

ihr Know-how online stellen und anderen zur 

Verfügung stellen, um so die Produktion zu 

verbessern.

Ursus, un monumento galleggiante 

Ursus, a floating monument | Ursus, ein schwimmender Riese 

Tra le prime e più importanti realizzazioni 

della nuova società Cantieri Riuniti 

dell’Adriatico, ci fu la costruzione del Conte 

di Savoia, un grosso transatlantico, per 

sollevare i pesanti componenti del quale 

era necessaria una gru dall’enorme potenza. 

Nasce così, nel 1931, sfornato dalle officine 

cittadine, il pontone-gru Ursus, un titano di 

oltre 1500 tonnellate, con potente motore 

elettrico diesel e un braccio meccanico che 

poteva raggiungere un’altezza di 70 metri e 

sollevare fino a 350 tonnellate. 

Dopo aver prestato servizio per oltre 

sessant’anni, il pontone-gru è stato messo 

in disarmo alla fine del 1994 ed è rimasto in 

attesa di demolizione al Cantiere San Marco. 

Ma l’affetto che nutrono i triestini per questo 

vecchio gigante metallico lo ha trasformato 

in un vero e proprio monumento cittadino. 

Si può ammirare dalle Rive di Trieste nello 

spazio del Porto Vecchio, vicino a molo IV. 

Salvo rocambolesche fughe verso il mare 

aperto, come quella che nel febbraio 2011, 

complice la bora, lo ha reso protagonista dei 

telegiornali nazionali. 

Among the first and most important 

projects created by the new Cantieri 

Riuniti dell’Adriatico, was the construction of 

the Conte di Savoia, a large transatlantic liner. 

In order to lift the heavy metal components 

an enormous crane was needed, and so in 

1931 a massive bridge-crane was built in the 

city’s workshops. It was a titan of over 1500 

tons, with a powerful electro-diesel engine 

and a mechanical arm which could reach a 

height of 70 metres and lift up to 350 tons 

at a time. After serving for over 70 years, the 

bridge-crane was retired in 1994 and awaited 

demolition in the shipyard of San Marco. But 

the affection that Triestines felt for the old 

metal giant had transformed it into a people’s 

monument. It can now be seen from the 

Rive di Trieste in the Porto Vecchio, near to 

pier IV, apart from the occasional attempt to 

escape onto the high seas – such as the one 

in February 2011 caused by the famous wind, 

the Bora, which made the television news. 

Zu den ersten und wichtigsten Werken 

der neuen Gesellschaft Cantieri Riuniti 

dell’Adriatico gehört der Conte di Savoia. 

Es handelt sich dabei um einen großen 

Ozeandampfer, für dessen Bau ein Kran 

enomer Leistung nötig war. So entsteht 

1931 in den Werkstätten der Stadt der 

Ponton Ursus, ein riesiger über 1500 Tonnen 

schwerer, schwimmender Kran mit einem 

leistungsstarken Dieselmotor und einem 

mechanischen Arm, der eine Höhe von 70 

Metern erreichen und Lasten von bis zu 350 

Tonnen heben konnte. 

Nach über 60 Jahren Dienst wurde der 

Ponton Ende 1994 pensioniert und wartet 

bisher auf seine Verschrottung in der Werft 

San Marco. Doch die Liebe der Triestiner zu 

ihrem alten Metallriesen hat ihn zu einer 

wahren Sehenswürdigkeit in der Stadt 

gemacht. Von den Rive im Alten Hafen von 

Triest in der Nähe der Hafenmole IV kann 


man ihn sehen. Außer er ergreift gerade 

die waghalsige Flucht ins offene Meer, wie 

im Februar 2011, als er sich mit der Bora als 

Komplizin aus der Verankerung riss und in 

den Nachrichten in ganz Italien zu sehen war. 


Si racconta che, dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale, 

durante il periodo dell’occupazione jugoslava a 

Trieste, l’Ursus fu anche oggetto di un tentativo 

di furto da parte delle truppe titine, tentativo 

sventato dall’intervento di un pattuglione 

britannico. 

It is said that in the days following the end of 

the Second World War, during the brief period of 

Jugoslavian occupation, the Ursus was the object 

of a kidnap attempt by Tito’s forces, which was 

thwarted by the arrival of a British patrol. 

Es wird erzählt, dass die Truppen von Tito während 

der jugoslawischen Besetzung von Triest nach 

dem Zweiten Weltkrieg versucht hatten, den 

Ursus zu stehlen, was aber von einer britischen 

Patrouille verhindert werden konnte.


Civico Museo del Mare

Il Civico Museo del Mare, che ripercorre 

l’affermarsi della marineria triestina 

offrendo un inquadramento storico 

più ampio sui mezzi e strumenti di 

navigazione, è uno dei più importanti 

dell’intera area mediterranea. Dai pannelli 

dedicati alla Trieste del sale, si arriva alle 

stanze riservate a Marconi, dove è esposto

sperimentatore della propulsione a elica in 

applicazione alla navigazione a vapore. 

Il nucleo embrionale del museo pare 

sia nato nel 1888, quando la Società di 

Pesca e Pescicoltura Marina iniziava a 

progettare quello che nel 1904 divenne 

un primo museo della pesca, con annesso 

un laboratorio biologico. Le collezioni 

della scuola nautica teresiana andarono 

poi a costituire un’Esposizione Marittima 

Permanente che trovò sede adeguata 

nell’antica palazzina di via Campo Marzio 

1, nel Lazzaretto S. Carlo, dove sono oggi 

esposti anche modelli di navi antiche 

e medioevali, con pannelli esplicativi 

sull’evoluzione delle imbarcazioni primitive 

e delle antiche navi mediterranee. 

The Civic Museum of the Sea is one 

of the most important of its kind in 

the whole Mediterranean area, and is 

intended to show the importance of the 

sea in Trieste’s history and the contribution 

made by Trieste and her people. From the 

panels about Trieste and Salt production, 

visitors come to the rooms dedicated 

to the inventor Marconi where a model 

of his ship – the Electra, from which the 

first wireless telegraph message was 

transmitted - can be seen, and to Ressel 

who carried out the first experiments into 

the use of the propeller in ships with a 

steam engine. The Museum dates back 

to 1888, when the Società di Pesca e 

Pescicoltura Marina began to plan what 

in 1904 became the Museum of Fishing, 

with connected laboratories for biological 

analysis. The collection of the Nautical 

School went on to form the Permanent 

Maritime Exhibition which found a home 

in the building in Via Campo Marzio in the 

Lazzaretto San Carlo, where today there are 

models of both primitive and mediaeval 

boats with explanatory panels about 

the evolution of boats and in particular 

of the development of those from the 

Mediterranean. 

Das Meeresmuseum der Stadt zeigt, 

wie sich das Seewesen in Triest 

behauptet und durchgesetzt hat, und 

bietet einen geschichtlichen Überblick 

über die Schiffsbauten und -geräte. Es ist 

einer der wichtigsten Museen des ganzen 

Mittelmeerraums. Von den Infotafeln zur 

Salzgewinnung in Triest gelangt man 

in den Marconi-Saal, wo ein Modell des 

Schiffes Elettra zu sehen ist, von dem die 

erste schnurlose Funknachricht gesendet 

wurde, und in den Ressel-Saal, der 

dem Erfinder des Propellerantriebs bei 

Dampfschiffen gewidmet ist. 

Der erste Teil des Museums geht 

vermutlich auf das Jahr 1888 zurück, als 

die Fischereigesellschaft Società di Pesca 

e Pescicoltura Marina mit den Plänen 

von dem begann, was 1904 zum ersten 

Fischereimuseum mit biologischem 

Labor werden sollte. Die Sammlung der 

theresianischen Nautikschule wurde 

dann zu einer Dauerausstellung, die im 

aniken Palazzo in der Via Campo Marzio 1 

im Lazaretto San Carlo einen geeigneten 

Sitz fand, wo heute auch antike und 

mittelalterliche Schiffsmodelle mit 

Infotafeln zur Entwicklung der primitiven 

Schiffe und der antiken Mittelmeerschiffe 

ausgestellt sind.

Una delle sezioni più appassionanti del museo 

riguarda i metodi di estrazione salina, di origine 

antichissima e strutturati su un complesso sistema 

di vasche di cristallizzazione, che interessavano 

tutta la costa adriatica. In esposizione si trova 

anche un plastico che riproduce parte della salina 

di Semedella, presso Capodistria. 

One of the most exciting sections of the Museum 

concerns the age-old method of extracting 

salt, which is based on a complex system of 

crystalisation basins and was used along the 

whole of the Adriatic coast. The display includes 

a model re-creating part of the salt-works at 

Semedella, near Capodistria. 

Eine der faszinierendsten Abteilungen des 

Museums beleuchtet die Methoden der 

Salzgewinnung an der Adria, deren Ursprünge 

sehr weit zurückgehen und die auf einem 

komplexen System von Kristallisierungsbecken 

beruht. Ausgestellt ist auch eine Plastik, die einen 

Teil der Salinen von Semedela in der Nähe von 

Koper reproduziert.

Civico Acquario Marino 

The Civic Marine Aquarium | Städtisches Meeresaquarium 

Il Civico Acquario Marino è allestito in una 

parte dell’ex Pescheria, edificio liberty 

eretto nel 1913 su progetto dell’architetto 

Giorgio Polli, la cui ampia sala centrale 

un tempo riservata ai banchi di vendita 

del pescato è stata oggi riconvertita nello 

splendido spazio espositivo del Salone degli 

Incanti. La torre dell’orologio, che si erge 

sulla parte sinistra, conteneva il serbatoio 

sopraelevato di acqua marina affluente 

ai banchi dei pesci, poi riadattato negli 

impianti quando, nel 1933, fu realizzato 

l’acquario. Vennero costruite una grande 

vasca centrale, dove ora nuotano squali e 

razze, e 25 vasche con capacità variabile, 

che oggi ricostruiscono diversi ambienti 

marini e ospitano specie prevalentemente 

adriatiche, come celenterati, anellidi, 

molluschi, echinodermi e crostacei. I 

vertebrati sono rappresentati soprattutto 

da pesci marini, d’acqua dolce e tropicali, 

da rettili e anfibi, sistemati tra il Vivarium 

al primo piano, lo stagno con rane e 

raganelle, i terrari con vipere, bisce 

d’acqua, salamandre e rospi che si possono 

accarezzare. 

The Civico Acquario Marino (Civic Marine 

Aquarium) is housed in part of the old 

fish market, the Pescheria, an Art Nouveau 

building of 1913 by the architect Giorgio 

Polli. The extensive space of the central hall 

once saw the sale of local, freshly-caught 

fish from a series of open stalls, but this 

has now been converted into the splendid 

exhibition area of the Salone degli Incanti. 

The clock-tower on the left-hand side once 

also held a tank of fresh sea-water which 

was then fed to the fish stalls, although it 

was adapted when the building was first 

converted into an aquarium in 1933. 

A massive central tank was built, where 

today swim sharks and rays, and there are 

25 tanks of variable capacity which recreate 

different marine habitats and host mainly 

Adriatic species such as coelenterates, 

annelids, moluscs, echinoderms and 

crustaceans. Vertebrates are mainly 

represented by sea fish, fresh-water fish and 

tropical fish, by reptiles and amphibians 

housed between the vivarium on the first 

floor, the pool with frogs, the special areas 

with vipers, fresh-water snakes, salamanders 

and toads which can be touched. 

Das Civico Acquario Marino befindet 

sich in einem Teil des ehemaligen 

Fischmarktes, in einem Jugendstilgebäude, 

das 1913 nach einem Entwurf des 

Architekten Giogio Polli errichtet wurde und 

dessen großer Hauptsaal, der einstmals dem 

Fischverkauf diente, heute in den herrlichen 

Ausstellungsraum Salone degli Incanti 

umgewandelt wurde. Der Uhrenturm, der 

links am Gebäude emporragt, enthielt 

einen erhöhten Wassertank, der die 

Fischstände speiste und mit dem Bau des 

Aquariums 1933 zu einem Teil desselben 

wurde. Gebaut wurden damals ein großes 

Zentralbecken, wo heute Haie und Rochen 

schwimmen, und 25 weitere Becken 

unterschiedlichen Ausmaßes, die heute 

verschiedene Meereslandschaften darstellen 

und vor allen adriatische Fischarten, wie 

Hohltiere, Ringelwürmer, Weichtiere, 

Stachelhäuter und Krebstiere beherbergen.

Zu sehen sind auch Wirbeltiere, wie z. B. 

Meeresfische, Süßwasser- oder tropische 

Fische, Reptilien und Amphibien, die sich 

neben dem Vivarium im ersten Stock, dem 

Teich mit Fröschen und Laubfröschen und 

den Terrarien mit Vipern, Wasserschlangen, 

Salamandern und Kröten, die man auch 

streicheln darf, befinden. 


Nel 1953, l’equipaggio dell’imbarcazione Africa 

ha donato alla città un pinguino della famiglia 

sudafricana degli sfeniscidi, poi ribattezzato Marco 

e diventato il simbolo dell’acquario, dove ha 

vissuto per ben 31 anni girovagando liberamente 

e conquistandosi la simpatia di bambini e adulti. 

In 1953, the crew of the ship Africa donated a 

South African penguin to the city. Later named 

‘Marco’, he became the symbol of the aquarium, 

where he wandered around freely for 31 years, 

winning the hearts of children and adults alike. 

1953 hat die Besatzung des Schiffes Africa der 

Stadt einen Pinguin der südafrikanischen Familie 

der Spheniscidae geschenkt. Er wurde auf den 

Namen Marco getauft und war bald Symbol 

des Aquariums, wo er ganze 31 Jahre lang frei 

herumlief und so Kinder und Erwachsene für sich 

einnahm.

che fu residenza imperiale dell’Arciduca 

Massimiliano d’Asburgo, è circondato da 

due paradisi biologici: in terra, un parco 

curatissimo che vanta piante rare e secolari; 

in acqua, una splendida riserva marina 

dove vige un regime di tutela integrale. 

Più discreto ma non meno suggestivo 

è il maniero di Duino, arroccato sopra le 

affascinanti falesie a picco sul mare che 

tanto sedussero Rilke e molti altri personaggi 

illustri, prima e dopo di lui. Poco distanti, 

sgorgano dalle profondità della terra le 

acque dolci del fiume Timavo, che dopo un 

lungo viaggio sotterraneo risorgono a San 

Giovanni di Duino, in un luogo toccato dal 

sacro e dalla storia, per ricongiungersi alle 

maree salate dell’Adriatico. 

It would be difficult to imagine the Trieste 

coastline without thinking about two such 

special places as the castles of Miramare 

[22, 23, 26] and Duino [24]. The first was 

the Imperial residence of the Archduke 

Maximilian of Hapsburg, and is now 

surrounded by two biological paradises: 

on land, the well-kept grounds boast many 

rare and centuries-old plants; at sea, a 

splendid marine reserve is fully-protected. 

The castle of Duino is more discrete but 

no less enthralling, perched as it is on top 

of the cliffs overlooking the sea which 

seduced Reiner Maria Rilke and many other 

famous people before and after him. A short 

distance away at San Giovanni di Duino, the 

fresh waters of the River Timavo come to the 

surface from deep below ground in a place 

touched by the sacred and by history, to 

finally join the salt water of the Adriatic after 

a long, largely underground, journey. 

Das Küstenprofil von Triest ist kaum 

ohne zwei wichtige Punkte vorstellbar: 

das Schloss Miramare [22, 23, 26] und das 

Schloss Duino [24]. Das erste war kaiserlicher 

Wohnsitz des Erzherzogs Maximilian von 

Habsburg und ist von zwei biologischen 

Paradiesen umgeben – an Land vom 

schön gepflegten Garten mit seltenen und 

jahrhundertealten Pflanzen und im Meer 

von einem herrlichen Meeresreservat, 

das unter strengstem Naturschutz steht. 

Diskreter aber keineswegs weniger 

spektakulär ist das Schloss Duino direkt 

an der beeindruckenden Steilküste hoch 

über dem Meer, die Rilke und viele andere 

berühmte Persönlichkeiten vor und nach 

ihm so sehr faszinierte. Ganz in der Nähe, 

in San Giovanni di Duino, einem sakralen 

und historischen Ort, tritt das Süßwasser 

des Flusses Timavo aus den Tiefen der Erde 

wieder ans Tageslicht und vermischt sich 

nach seinem langen unterirdischen Verlauf 

schließlich mit dem Meerwasser der Adria.

The Castle of Miramare | Das Schloss von Miramare 

Bianca perla che spicca sul litorale 

triestino, il Castello di Miramare è un 

luogo simbolo della città. La residenza, 

protesa verso il Golfo di Trieste in una 

posizione panoramica incantevole, fu 

costruita tra il 1856 e il 1860 per l’arciduca 

Massimiliano d’Asburgo e la moglie Carlotta 

del Belgio. Perfetta sintesi tra natura e arte, 

fu progettata dall’ingegnere austriaco 

Carl Junker in stile eclettico, fondendo 

armoniosamente elementi gotici, medievali 

e rinascimentali, secondo la moda 

architettonica dell’epoca. 

Più volte visitata anche dalla principessa 

Sissi, la lussuosa dimora, oggi museo, 

conserva all’interno i suoi arredi originari, a 

firma degli artigiani Franz e Julius Hofmann. 

Il pianoterra, più intimo, era destinato agli 

appartamenti privati dell’arciduca mentre 

al primo piano ci sono le splendide sale 

di rappresentanza, ornate da sontuose 

tappezzerie, tappeti e stemmi imperiali. 

Nel rigoglioso parco del castello [22, 23], 

decorato con sculture e ricco di pregiate 

specie botaniche, poco prima dell’ingresso 

al parco ci sono le Scuderie, divenute sede 

espositiva, e il Castelletto, abitato negli anni 

’30 dai Duchi di Savoia- Aosta.

A littoral, the Castle of Miramare is a 

symbol of the city. It was built between 

1856 and 1860 in an enchanting panoramic 

position overlooking the Gulf of Trieste for

the Archduke Maximilian of Hapsburg and 

his wife Charlotte of Belgium. The castle – 

which was designed in an eclectic style by 

the Austrian architect Carl Junker - stands 

in perfect synthesis between nature and 

art, harmoniously blending elements of the 

Gothic, Mediaeval and Renaissance styles as 

was the architectural fashion of the time. 

This luxurious residence, which was often 

visited by the Empress Sissi, today houses 

a museum and still contains its original 

furniture by the craftsmen Franz and Julius 

Hofmann. The more intimate ground floor 

was used for the private apartments of the 

Archduke himself, while on the first floor are 

the magnificent reception rooms decorated 

by sumptuous tapestries and carpets and 

the Imperial coats-of-arms. 

The castle is set in a magnificent garden 

[22, 23], with sculptures and many highlyprized 

botanical specimens. Just before the 

entrance are the stables – now a display 

area – and the castelletto where the Duke of 

Savoia-Aosta lived in the 1930’s. 

Das Schloss von Miramare ist eine weiße 

Perle auf der Triester Küste und ein 

symbolträchtiger Ort der Stadt. Das Schloss 

blickt auf den Golf von Triest und hat einen 

zauberhaften Ausblick auf das Meer. 

Die Residenz wurde zwischen 1856 

und 1860 auf Wunsch von Herzherzog 

Maximilian von Habsburg und seiner 

Frau Charlotte von Belgien erbaut. Es 

ist eine perfekte Mischung von Natur 

und Kunst und wurde vom Wiener 

Baumeister Carl Junker in eklektischem Stil 

geplant. Er vereinte nach der damaligen 

architektonischen Tendenz Stilelemente aus 

Gotik, Mittelalter und Renaissance in einem 

sehr harmonischen Ergebnis. 

Die prachtvolle Residenz wurde mehrmals 

auch von Prinzessin Sissi besucht und 

ist heute ein Museum, das die originale 

Innenausstattung der Dekorateure 

Franz und Julius Hoffmann enthält. Im 

Erdgeschoss befinden sich die privaten 

intimeren Wohnräume des Herzherzoges, 

während sich die wunderschönen 

Repräsentationsräume mit den prächtigen 

Tapeten und Wappenbildern des Reiches im 

ersten Geschoss befinden. 

Das Schloss ist von einem wuchernden Park 

umgeben [22, 23], welcher mit Skulpturen 

dekoriert und reich an wertvollen 

Pflanzenarten ist. 

Kurz vor dem Eingang befinden sich 

der ehemalige Reitstall, in dem heute 

Ausstellungen stattfinden, und das 

Castelletto, in dem die Herzoge von Savoia- 

Aosta wohnten.

WWF Area Marina Protetta di Miramare 

Marine Protected Area (MPA) | Das Naturschutzgebiet von Miramare 

Nel 1986, tra il porticciolo turistico 

di Grignano e la riviera di Barcola, 

è stata istituita l’Area Marina Protetta di 

Miramare, gestita da WWF Italia Onlus, 

dove vige un regime di tutela integrale. 

L’ingresso in mare è però consentito per 

visite subacquee guidate e attività di 

snorkeling con accompagnatore. 

Il centro visite dell’Area Marina Protetta di 

Miramare, aperto tutto l’anno, permette 

di conoscere un universo sommerso 

altrimenti difficilmente accessibile, 

proponendo ai visitatori un percorso 

multisensoriale attraverso gli habitat 

tipici del Golfo di Trieste. Lo staff di 

biologi e naturalisti accoglie scolaresche 

e turisti, li accompagna nella scoperta 

e interpretazione dell’ambiente marino 

costiero, li coinvolge in attività di 

campionamento e monitoraggio della 

flora e della fauna. Le attività ecoricreative 

prevedono moduli di visita e di 

educazione ambientale con interventi di 

durata variabile, offrendo anche soggiorni 

residenziali di un’intera settimana 

(Settimane Azzurre). 

In 1986, the Marine Protected Area 

of Miramare (MPA) was established 

between the small tourist harbour of 

Grignano and the Barcola Riviera, managed 

by the Italian branch of the World Wildlife 

Fund to oversee the complete protection 

of the area. Access to the sea is, however, 

allowed for guided, scuba-diving visits and

snorkelling with an official guide. 

The visitors’ centre at the MPA is open 

throughout the year, and enables visitors 

to learn more about an undersea world 

which is not easily accessible by offering a 

multi-sensory path among habitats typical 

of the Gulf of Trieste. The staff of biologists 

and naturalists welcomes school visits and 

individual tourists, accompanying them in 

a journey of discovery of the coastal marine 

environment and involving them in taking 

samples of and monitoring the plant and 

animal life. Green, eco-recreational activities 

involve modules of visits and environmental 

education of different durations, including 

week-long residential courses (Blue Weeks). 

1986 wurde das Naturschutzgebiet von 

Miramare zwischen dem touristischen

geöffnet und bietet die Möglichkeit, mit 

allen Sinnen durch die verschiedenen 

Landschaften des Triester Golfes zu 

reisen und so ein schwer zugängliches 

Universum zu entdecken. Die Biologen 

und Naturwissenschaftler empfangen 

Schulklassen und Touristen und begeben 

sich mit ihnen auf eine Entdeckungsreise 

durch die Meeres- bzw. Küstenlandschaft. 

Die Besucher werden außerdem bei der 

Musterentnahme und der Überwachung 

der Pflanzen- und Tierarten einbezogen. 

Führungen und Umwelterziehungskurse 

unterschiedlicher Dauer sowie 

wöchentliche Aufenthalte (die so 

genannten Settimane Azzurre, Hellblaue 

Wochen) zählen zu den vielfältigen Natur- 

und Spielaktivitäten.

Su un alto sperone roccioso, a picco sul 

mare, è arroccato il castello di Duino, 

residenza storica dei principi della Torre e 

Tasso (Thurm und Taxis). L’antico castello, 

di cui oggi rimangono soltanto pochi resti, 

sorgeva sul promontorio adiacente. 

Il nucleo centrale della nuova fortezza, più 

volte ristrutturato e ampliato nei secoli, fu 

costruito nel Trecento, sulle rovine di un 

avamposto romano, inglobando i resti di una 

torre del XVI secolo ancora oggi visibili 

nel corpo del moderno edificio. Dalle 

numerose terrazze e dagli interni della 

residenza, aperti al pubblico, si gode un 

panorama meraviglioso sull’intero Golfo, 

apprezzato anche da molti personaggi illustri. 

Statue antiche, reperti archeologici e un 

pozzo scolpito con lo stemma di famiglia 

impreziosiscono il parco circostante, dove 

prosperano diverse specie mediterranee e 

dal quale si accede a un bunker costruito 

nella roccia durante la Seconda Guerra 

Mondiale, divenuto un piccolo museo con 

cimeli d’epoca, esposti in una grande sala 

scavata a 18 metri di profondità. 

On another rocky outcrop and standing 

above the sea is the castle of Duino, 

the historic residence of the princely family

The older castle, of which little remains, 

stood on the adjacent promontory. The 

heart of the new fortress, which has been 

rebuilt and extended many times over the 

centuries, was built in the XIVth century on 

the ruins of a Roman outpost which were 

then included in the remains of a XVIth 

century tower still to be seen in today’s 

building. Both from the numerous terraces 

and the rooms of the residence which are 

open to the public, visitors can enjoy the 

marvelous view over the whole Gulf of 

Trieste so well-appreciated by many famous 

historical figures. 

Statues from the ancient world, 

archeological remains and a well, decorated 

with the family’s coat-of-arms add to the 

allure of the surrounding gardens, where 

there are many species of Mediterranean 

flora. From here there is also access to a 

former bunker built during the Second 

World War and now a small museum 

containing relics of the period displayed 

in an enormous room 18 metres below 

ground level. 

Auf einem hohen Felssporn liegt steil 

über das Meer das Schloss von Duino,

und Taxis. Das alte Schloss, von dem heute 

nur einige Reste übrig bleiben, entstand

Körper der neuen Befestigungsanlage,

den Ruinen eines römischen Vorpostens 

erbaut. Das Gebäude enthält die noch 

heute sichtbaren Überreste eines Turmes 

des 16. Jahrhunderts. Von den zahlreichen 

Terrassen, wie von den dem Publikum 

geöffneten Innenräumen der Residenz aus, 

kann man ein atemberaubendes Panorama 

des ganzen Golfes genießen, das auch viele 

berühmte Persönlichkeiten bewundert 

haben. 

Alte Statuen, archäologische Funde und 

ein Brunnen mit dem Familienwappen 

schmücken den umgehenden Schlosspark, 

in dem die Mittelmeervegetation blüht. Der 

Park führt außerdem zu einem in den Fels 

gebauten Bunker des Zweiten Weltkrieges; 

ein kleines Museum, in dem Zimelien in 

einem 18 m tiefen unterirdischen Saal 

ausgestellt werden.

Le risorgive del Timavo

Il fiume Timavo, considerato il più corto 

d’Italia, nasce in Slovenia, s’inabissa nelle 

Škocjanske jame (Grotte di San Canziano) e 

riemerge, dopo un percorso sotterraneo di 

circa 20 Km, a San Giovanni di Duino [33]. 

Frequentata sin dalla preistoria, l’area delle 

Risorgive, di alto pregio sia naturalistico che 

storico, era considerata luogo sacro, come 

conferma anche la lapide romana dedicata 

al Nume Timavo. Sorge qui la Chiesa di 

San Giovanni in Tuba [35], raro esempio 

di architettura gotica presente nel Carso, 

risalente al XV secolo ma con origini ben più 

lontane, come testimoniano i mosaici del V 

secolo visibili all’interno. Nell’abside, dietro 

l’altare, si vede la zona degli scavi dove sono 

venute alla luce le vestigia di una piccola 

basilica paleocristiana. 

La prima risorgiva si trova nelle immediate 

vicinanze della chiesa ma la folta vegetazione 

non permette di avere una visione completa 

degli altri due rami del fiume, poco distanti, 

che si riuniscono prima di arrivare al mare, a 

soli 2 Km. 

A un centinaio di metri a monte, sulla sinistra, 

si trovano la mansio, stazione di sosta di 

epoca Imperiale, e i solchi dell’antica Strada 

Romana che da Aquileia, passando per il 

Carso, arrivava sino a Trieste. 

The River Timavo – considered to be the 

shortest river in Italy – starts in Slovenia, 

flows underground from the Škocjanske 

jame (Cave of San Canziano) and reemerges 

after some two kilometers at San 

Giovanni di Duino [33]. The area has been 

known since pre-historic times, and these 

springs (the so-called Risorgive), of great 

naturalistic and historical importance, were 

once held to be sacred as confirmed by the 

Roman stone inscription dedicated to the 

Nume Timavo. Here stands the church of 

San Giovanni in Tuba [35], a rare example

of Gothic architecture on the Carso, dating 

back to the XVth century in its present form, 

but with much older origins as the Vth 

century mosaics which can be seen within 

can testify. In the apse, behind the altar, 

there can be seen the excavations which 

have brought to light the remains of an 

early-Christian basilica. 

The first of the springs lies near to the 

church but the thick undergrowth prevents 

a clear view of the other two branches of 

the river which are also nearby. These all join 

together before arriving at the sea, only 2 

km away 

One hundred metres uphill and towards 

the left, is the mansio a staging post during 

the Imperial period and the traces of 

the ancient Roman road which led from 

Aquileia over the Carso to Trieste. 

Der Timavo gilt als der kürzeste Fluss 

Italiens; er entspringt in Slowenien, 

fließt unterirdisch durch die Škocjanske 

jame, die Höhlen von San Canziano, und 

taucht nach einem 20 km langen Weg in 

San Giovanni di Duino wieder auf [33]. Das 

historisch und natürlich wertvolle Gebiet 

der Timavoquelle wurde bereits in der 

Vorgeschichte bewohnt und als heiliger Ort 

angesehen, wie auch das dem Gott Timavus 

gewidmete römische Grab bestätigt. Hier 

findet man die Kapelle von S. Giovanni in 

Tuba [35], die ein seltenes Beispiel des bis 

auf das 16. Jahrhundert zurückgehenden 

gotischen Stiles des Karstes darstellt, 

während die Mosaiken des Innenraums bis 

zum 5 Jahrhundert zurückreichen. 

In der Apsis, die sich hinter dem Altar 

befindet, sind die Ausgrabungen 

sichtbar, in denen Überreste einer 

kleinen frühchristlichen Basilika ans Licht 

gekommen sind.

Nähe der Kirche, während die üppige 

Vegetation den vollständigen Blick auf die 

zwei anderen nahen Quellen verhindert, 

die sich wieder vereinigen, bevor sie nach 2 

Kilometern ins Meer münden. 

Hundert Kilometer links bergauf befindet 

sich die Mansio, der Rastplatz aus der 

Kaiserzeit sowie die Überreste der alten 

Römischen Straße, welche von Aquileia 

über den Karst nach Triest führte. 


Sulla roccia sovrastante la seconda risorgiva del 

Timavo, sotto al monumento ai caduti della Prima 

Guerra Mondiale che commemora il reggimento 

Lupi di Toscana [34], sono stati scolpiti i versi di 

Virgilio che parlano proprio del fiume carsico. 

Secondo quanto riportato dal poeta latino nel 

primo libro dell’Eneide i rami del Timavo erano 

però nove e non soltanto tre: “Onde con vasto 

murmure del monte va qual dirotto mar per nove 

bocche e risonante allaga le campagne”. 

On the rock-face overlooking the second of the 

springs of the Timavo and below a monument 

to the fallen during the First World War which 

remembers the regiment Lupi di Toscana [34], 

several verses from Virgil which speak of the Carso 

river have been carved into the rock. According to 

the Latin poet in his first book of the Aeniad, there 

were nine branches of the Timavo, not only three: 

“Waves murmuring loudly from the mountains fall 

down towards the sea from nine mouths to flood 

the land”. 

Am Fuße des Kriegerdenkmales, das dem 

Gedenken des Regimentes Lupi di Toscana [34] 

gewidmet ist, wurden die Verse des römischen 

Dichters Vergil, die den Karstfluss beschreiben, in 

den Stein gehauen. In dem ersten Buch der Aeneis 

werden aber neun Timavoquellen und nicht drei 

erwähnt.

Unmissable beaches | Unvergessliche Strände 

La costa triestina riserva molte 

sorprese. Dalle splendide baie di 

Sistiana e Grigano si passa alle piccole 

spiaggette nascoste, più intime e difficili 

da raggiungere. Come l’insenatura che 

sta proprio sotto al Castello di Duino, 

incastonata nelle affascinanti forme delle 

alte falesie formatesi per l’intensa azione 

erosiva del mare, o come le spiagge 

accovacciate sotto alla panoramica Strada 

Costiera, da Canovella de’Zoppoli, ai Filtri 

di Aurisina dalla più selvaggia Costa dei 

Barbari, amata dai naturisti. 

Tra le destinazioni balneari più popolate dai 

triestini c’è poi tutta la riviera di Barcola, che 

dalla zona del porto arriva sino alle affollate

piazzole del bivio, prima del Castello di 

Miramare. Passando naturalmente per i 

topolini, ovvero uno stabilimento costituito 

da dieci terrazze semicircolari che, 

raggruppate a coppie, ricordano appunto 

le orecchie del famoso roditore disneyano. 

Numerosi sono anche gli stabilimenti privati, 

sia lungo la costa che spostandosi verso lidi 

più cittadini, dove però, allo stravolgimento 

delle Rive per assecondare la vocazione 

portuale della città, sono sopravvissute 

ben poche aree di balneazione. Tra queste, 

gli spazi ricavati dall’antica Diga o dagli 

ex Bagno Militare e Stabilimento Savoia, 

accorpati negli anni ’30 tramite un pontile. 

E soprattutto l’amatissimo stabilimento 

pubblico Lanterna, meglio noto come 

Pedocin, famoso per la divisione in due 

aree distinte a seconda del sesso di 

appartenenza e istituito nel 1903 nella 

sassosa spiaggetta che va dalla vecchia 

Stazione dei treni (ora Museo Ferroviario 

che espone vecchie locomotive a vapore e 

vagoni d’epoca) fino all’antico faro di Trieste, 

da cui lo stabilimento prende il nome. 

Tra le zone balneabili della provincia non 

bisogna dimenticare la costiera muggesana, 

che si sviluppa per circa sei chilometri, 

a partire dal mandracchio - lasciando il 

quale s’incontrano il lungomare libero e l’ex 

dopolavoro che veniva frequentato dagli 

operai dei cantieri navali di San Rocco - fino

al valico di San Bartolomeo-Lazzaretto, 

poco prima del quale si trova Punta Sottile, 

l’unica spiaggia della provincia con fondale 

sabbioso. 

The Trieste coast holds many surprises. 

From the beautiful bays of Sistiana 

and Grigano to the smaller, more intimate 

beaches which are hidden and hard to 

reach. Such as the stream which lies just 

below the castle of Duino, set among the 

fascinating shapes of the high cliffs created 

by the erosive action of the sea, or like the 

beaches below the scenic coastal road from 

Canovella di Zoppoli, to the Filtri di Aurisina 

or the wilder Costa dei Barbari, beloved by 

naturists. 

Among the most popular destinations for 

local people is the whole of the Barcola 

sea-front, from the harbour up to the 

more crowded places of the crossroads 

(bivio), before the castle of Miramare. This 

naturally leads us to the mice (topolini), 

an area consisting of ten semi-circular 

terraces, grouped in pairs, reminiscent 

of the ears of the famous Disney rodent. 

There are also numerous private bathing 

establishments, both along the coast and 

towards the city centre in the form of 

people’s lidos, where leisure activities have 

struggled and lost against the city’s natural 

vocation as a working port. Among these 

is the area formed by the old sea-wall and 

the ex-military baths and the Stabilimento

Savoia, which were linked by a jetty in the 

1930’s. And especially, the popular public 

bathing area of the Lanterna, better known 

as Pedocin- famous for its separation into 

two distinct swimming areas based on 

gender - which was established in 1903 

on the pebble beach which leads from the 

old railway station (now a railway museum 

with displays of old steam locomotives and 

railway wagons and carriages) to the old 

lighthouse from which the area takes its 

name. 

Among other bathing places in the 

province of Trieste we must not forget 

the Muggesana, which stretches for 

approximately six kilometres from the 

harbour - leaving which we meet the free 

promenade and the former “workers’ club” 

used by workers from the shipyards of San 

Rocco - until passing San Bartolomeo- 

Lazzaretto, shortly before which lies 

Punta Sottile, the only sandy beach in the 

province.

erreichen sind. Aber auch die Bucht direkt 

unter dem Schloss Duino, umgeben 

von den beeindruckenden Formen der 

hohen Steilküste, die durch die intensive 

Erosionskraft des Meeres entstanden sind,

oder die Strände unter der Panorama- 

Küstenstraße von Canovella degli Zoppoli, 

die Strände der Filtri di Aurisina oder die 

wild Landschaft der FKK-Strände der Costa 

dei Barbari. 

Eines der beliebtesten Badeziele der Triester 

ist jedoch die gesamte Küste von Barcola, 

die vom Alten Hafen bis zu den überfüllten 

Badekais am Bivio geht, wo die Straße nach 

Miramare abzweigt. Erwähnt seien auch 

die sog. Topolini (dt.: Mickey Mouse), ein 

Strandbad mit zehn halbkreisförmigen 

Terrassen, die aneinander gereiht an die 

Ohren der berühmten Disneyfigur erinnern. 

Es gibt auch zahlreiche Privatbadeanstalten, 

sowohl an der Küste als auch in Richtung 

Stadt, wo wegen des Hafengeländes aber 

nur wenige übriggeblieben sind, wie z. 

B. die antica Diga (“alter Deich“) oder das 

ehemalige Militärbad und das Savoia, die 

in den 30-er Jahren durch eine Brücke 

verbunden wurden. Und vor allem das so 

beliebte öffentliche Strandbad Lanterna, 

besser bekannt unter dem Namen Pedocin, 

das für seine strikte Trennung von Männlein 

und Weiblein berühmt ist und 1903 auf dem 

Kiesstrand eröffnet wurde, der vom alten 

Bahnhof (heute ein Eisenbahnmuseum, das 

alte Dampflokomotiven und historische 

Waggons ausstellt) bis zum alten 

Leuchtturm geht, der dem Strandbad 

seinen Namen gibt. 

Unter den Badeorten der Provinz darf man 

die Küste von Muggia nicht vergessen, 

die sich über ca. sechs Kilometer vom 

Hafenbecken – danach kommt man zu 

einem frei zugänglichen Küstenabschnitt 

und zu dem Teil, der früher von den 

Arbeitern der Schiffswerft San Rocco 

besucht wurde – bis zum Grenzübergang 

San Bartolomeo-Lazzaretto, vor dem die 

Punta Sottile, der einzige Sandstrand der 

Provinz, liegt.

Incastonata tra le alte pareti bianche della 

ex cava, oggi divenuta palestra di roccia 

per alpinisti, e delle falesie tutelate dal Parco 

Naturale di Duino, la baia di Sistiana apre 

una breccia nel calcareo affaccio sul mare 

dell’altipiano carsico. Un tempo rinomato 

luogo di villeggiatura austroungarico, ha 

mantenuto la propria vocazione balneare 

e offre la possibilità di scegliere tra curati 

stabilimenti privati o spiagge libere, 

caratterizzate da piccoli ciottoli adatti anche 

ai più piccoli [43]. La baia è accessibile in 

macchina o via mare grazie ai numerosi moli 

di attracco per imbarcazioni da diporto. 

Non mancano chioschi e discoteche, 

ristorantini e locali in riva al mare che attirano 

in questa verde e assieme rocciosa insenatura 

una variegata umanità. Dal bagnante 

tranquillo con famiglia al giovane tuffatore 

spericolato, dallo sportivo al buongustaio, dal 

romantico camminatore meravigliato di fronte 

allo splendido scenario naturale all’amante 

della movida notturna e del divertimento, 

nessuno rimane deluso. 

Nestled between the high white walls 

of the former quarry - which today is 

used by rock-climbers - and cliffs protected as 

part of the Natural Park of Duino, the bay of 

Sistiana opens up a breach in the limestone 

wall facing the sea at the edge of the Carso 

plateau. Once a renowned Hungarian resort, 

Sistiana has retained its vocation as a seaside 

resort and offers the opportunity to choose 

between up-market bathing establishments 

with private beaches and free-access, pebble 

beaches which are great for children as 

well [43]. The bay is accessible by car or by 

boat thanks to the many jetties for mooring 

pleasure craft. There are kiosks and discos, 

restaurants and beach clubs which attract 

a wide cross-section of society to this rocky 

cove. From the careful swimmer with a young 

family to the carefree young diver, from the 

sportsman to the bon vivant, from the lover 

of a romantic walk among the splendors of 

nature to those dedicated to a frenetic nightlife, 

no-one will be left disappointed. 

Umgeben von den hohen weißen 

Felswänden des ehemaligen 

Steinbruchs, der heute ein Kletterparadies für 

Bergsteiger darstellt, und den Steilhängen 

des Naturparks von Duino liegt die Bucht von 

Sistiana unter der Hochebene des Karstes. 

Früher war es ein renommierter Urlaubsort 

für Touristen aus Österreich-Ungarn und auch 

heute folgt die Bucht ihrer Berufung und 

bietet die Möglichkeit, zwischen gepflegten 

Privatstrandbädern und freien Kiesstränden 

zu wählen [43], die auch für die Kleinsten 

geeignet sind. Die Bucht kann mit dem Auto 

und dank der zahlreichen Ankerplätze auch 

mit dem Schiff erreicht werden. 

Auch Kioske und Diskotheken sind vor Ort, 

sowie kleine Restaurants und Lokale am 

Meeresufer, die in dieser grünen und zugleich 

felsigen Bucht verschiedenste Leute anziehen: 

vom ruhigen Strandgänger mit Familie bis 

zum jungen waghalsigen Wasserspringer, 

vom Sportler bis zum Feinschmecker, 

vom romantischen Spaziergänger bis 

zum Liebhaber des Nachtlebens und der 

Unterhaltung – hier wird niemand enttäuscht. 


Durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, in virtù 

della sua strategica posizione protetta e nascosta, 

la baia servì da base militare per i Molch, 

sommergibili tascabili tedeschi, nascosti in una 

serie di gallerie scavate nella roccia. Uno di questi 

piccoli sottomarini ancora giace sui fondali della 

baia mentre una altro esemplare è conservato 

nel Civico Museo di guerra per la pace “Diego de 

Henriquez”. 

During the Second World War, by virtue of its 

strategic, protected and hidden position the bay 

served as a military base for German miniature 

submarines called Molch, hidden in a series of 

tunnels cut into the rock. One of these small 

submarines is still lying on the seabed of the bay 

while another is on display in the Civic Museum 

of War and Peace (Civico Museo di Guerra per la 

Pace) “Diego de Henriquez”. 

Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs diente die 

Bucht dank der strategischen, geschützten und 

versteckten Lage als Militärbasis für die deutschen 

Kleinst-U-Boote mit dem Namen Molch. Diese 

wurden in einigen in den Felsen gegrabenen 

Gängen verstekt. Eines dieser kleinen U-Boote 

liegt heute noch auf dem Meeresgrund der 

Bucht, während sich ein anderes Exemplar im 

städtischen Kriegsmuseum für den Frieden “Diego 

de Henriquez“ befindet.

Canovella de’Zoppoli si può raggiungere 

solo in barca o a piedi, imboccando 

il panoramico sentiero percorso da secoli 

dai pescatori carsici che scendevano dal 

ciglione per lanciare le reti dalle proprie 

rudimentali imbarcazioni in legno, gli 

zoppoli ricordati nel toponimo. Da Aurisina, 

o dalla Strada Costiera volendo accorciare, si 

scende attraversando prima un bosco e poi i 

terrazzamenti agricoli faticosamente ricavati 

lungo lo scosceso costone carsico che, in 

molti punti, regala splendidi scorci sul golfo. 

Si raggiungerà infine un piccolo porticciolo, 

dove ci sono docce, servizi e un ristorantino, 

a lato del quale si snoda, verso Miramare, 

il sassoso tratto di spiaggia libera, d’estate 

molto frequentato anche per feste notturne. 

Il lido è riparato e tranquillo e, proseguendo 

lungo l’arenile, in una decina di minuti, si 

può raggiungere anche la zona naturista del 

Liburnia, esplorando un tratto costiero che 

ricorda quelli della Puglia meridionale, di 

alcune sassose isolette greche o della Corsica. 

Canovella de’Zoppoli can only be 

reached by boat or on foot, by taking 

the panoramic track which has been 

used for centuries by fishermen from the 

Carso plateau who clambered down the 

embankment to launch their nets from 

the primitive wooden boats – the Zoppoli 

– that give their name to the area. From 

Aurisina or from the coastal road if you want 

to shorten the distance, you walk down 

through first a wood and then an area of 

terraces laboriously dug into the hillside, 

some stretches of the walk giving splendid 

views over the Gulf. Finally you arrive at a 

small harbour with showers, toilets and a

restaurant at the side of which starts the 

stony path leading to the free-access beach 

which is very popular in summer, not least for 

all-night parties. The bathing area is sheltered 

and quiet and by walking along the sandy 

shore for a further ten minutes you can come 

to the naturalist beach of Liburnia in an area 

that is reminiscent of Puglia in the south 

of Italy, Corsica or some of the rocky Greek 

islands. 

Canovella de’Zoppoli kann man nur 

auf dem Wasserweg oder zu Fuß 

erreichen. Der Panoramaweg wurde schon 

vor Jahrhunderten von den Fischern aus 

dem Karst benutzt, die den Steilhang 

hinuntergingen, um vor der Küste auf 

ihren rudimentären Holzbooten, den 

Zoppoli, daher auch der Ortsname, ihre 

Fischernetze auszuwerfen. Von Aurisina, 

oder der Küstenstraße, geht man zuerst 

durch einen Wald und dann über die 

mühsam am karstigen Steilhang erbauten 

Terassenanlagen, von denen aus man 

einen wunderschönen Ausblick auf den 

Golf hat, ans Meeresufer hinunter. Unten 

kommt man zu einem kleinen Hafen, wo 

sich auch Duschen, Toiletten und ein kleines 

Restaurant befinden. Nach dem Restaurant 

beginnt in Richtung Miramare der freie und 

steinige Strand, wo im Sommer auch gerne 

Nachtpartys gefeiert werden. Der Lido ist 

geschützt und ruhig und, wenn man dem 

Strand folgt, erreicht man nach etwa zehn 

Minuten den FKK-Bereich Liburnia, der an 

das südliche Apulien oder an die steinigen 

griechischen oder korsischen Inseln erinnert. 


Lo Zoppolo, utilizzato per molti secoli lungo 

la costa triestina, era una semplice e primitiva 

imbarcazione, ricavata da un unico tronco d’albero 

scavato all’interno, dal fondo robusto, ideale da 

maneggiare sul pietrisco delle spiaggette carsiche, 

prive di porti o mandracchi. Veniva utilizzata dai 

contadini per pescare e per raggiungere i terreni 

costieri non accessibili via terra. 

The Zoppolo, a boat used for centuries along 

the Trieste coastline, was a simple, primitive boat 

dug out of a single tree-trunk so it had a solid 

hull which was ideal for dragging over the rocky 

beaches without moorings or harbours where 

the Carso meets the sea. It was used by the 

local peasants for fishing or to reach otherwise 

inaccessible costal farmland. 

Der sogenannte Zoppolo wurde über 

Jahrhunderte entlang der Küste von Triest benutzt 

und war ein einfaches und primitives Boot, das 

aus einem einzigen, in der Mitte ausgehöhlten 

Baumstamm gewonnen wurde. Die dickwändigen 

Boote waren ideal für die steinigen Karststrände, 

die keine Hafenanlagen oder -becken hatten, und 

boten den Bauern die Möglichkeit, Fischfang zu 

betreiben und vom Land schwer zugängliche 

Küstenabschnitte zu erreichen.

La Lanterna, meglio noto come Pedocin è 

oggi l’unico stabilimento in Europa dove 

l’area destinata agli uomini e quella riservata 

a donne e bambini fino ai 12 anni sono 

separate. Le barriere architettoniche sono 

state abbattute all’ingresso della struttura ma 

guai a toccare l’amatissimo muro di 3 metri 

che mantiene divisi i due settori e permette 

di godersi una certa tranquillità, magari 

concedendosi una tintarella senza pudori. I 

triestini difendono praticamente all’unanimità 

quest’antica ripartizione sessista che, vissuta 

molto simpaticamente, rappresenta ormai un 

tratto distintivo del luogo. 

Lo stabilimento, aperto d’inverno per 

cure elioterapiche (la balneazione però è 

consentita solo da giungo a settembre), si 

trova sul Molo Fratelli Bandiera, vicino al faro 

da cui prende nome. È sempre affollato, 

soprattutto nella pausa pranzo, perché 

vicinissimo al centro città e facilmente 

raggiungibile con i mezzi pubblici. Ci sono 

spogliatoi, servizi e due punti di ristoro interni. 

L’economico biglietto d’ingresso va obliterato 

come in autobus. 

The Lantern, better known as Pedocin, 

is now the only bathing area in Europe 

where the areas reserved for men and for 

women and children up to 12 years of age are 

separated. The architectural barriers have been 

torn down at the entrance to the structure, 

but no-one would dare to lay a finger on the 

beloved 3-metre-high wall which separates 

the two sectors and allows non-swimmers to 

enjoy peace and quiet, maybe by sunbathing 

without embarrassment. The local people 

are almost unanimous in defending this old 

sexist relic which, if viewed in its proper light, 

represents a distinctive feature of the site. 

The area is opened in the winter for 

heliotherapy (bathing is permitted only from 

June to September) and is located on the 

Fratelli Bandiera quay near the lighthouse 

from which it takes its name. It is always 

crowded, especially during lunch breaks, 

because it is so close to the city centre and 

easily reachable by public transport. There are 

two changing rooms, toilets and refreshment. 

The inexpensive admission ticket must be 

clipped as on a bus. 

Die Lanterna, besser bekannt unter 

dem Namen Pedocin, ist heute das 

einzige Strandbad in Europa, wo es noch 

zwei getrennte Abteilungen für Männer 

und Frauen und Kinder bis 12 gibt. Die 

Trennwände am Eingang wurden zwar 

entfernt, aber wehe, es stellt jemand die drei 

Meter hohe Mauer in Frage, die den Strand

Ruhe zu genießen und sich ohne Scham 

auf die Bräune zu konzentrieren. Die Triester 

verteidigen diese Geschlechteraufteilung 

gegen alle Neuerungen, wodurch sie 

mittlerweile zum Erkennungszeichen des 

Badeortes geworden ist. 

Das auch im Winter für Heliotherapie-Kuren 

geöffnete Strandbad (das Baden ist allerdings 

nur von Juni bis September erlaubt) befindet 

sich am Kai Fratelli Bandiera, in der Nähe vom 

alten Leuchtturm, der dem Bad auch seinen 

Namen gibt. Es ist immer überfüllt, vor allem 

zur Mittagspause, da es sehr zentral liegt und 

mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln leicht 

zu erreichen ist. Im Inneren befinden sich 

Umkleideräume, Toiletten, Duschen und zwei 

Snackbars. Der Eintrittskarte ist günstig und 

muss wie die Busfahrkarte abgestempelt 

werden. 


Alcuni sostengono che il poco lusinghiero toponimo 

dialettale si riferisca all’alta concentrazione di 

bagnanti ammassati sugli scogli come pedoci 

(cozze), tanto più che a inizio secolo i costumi scuri 

supportavano l’immagine. Altri insinuano che si 

faccia invece riferimento ai militari americani che 

frequentavano lo stabilimento durante il periodo 

di occupazione alleata e non avevano fama di 

curare particolarmente l’igiene personale (pedocio 

in triestino significa anche pidocchio). 

Some people argue that the unflattering dialect 

name refers to the high concentration of bathers 

piled up on the rocks like pedoci (=mussels), 

especially so since at the beginning of the last 

century, dark bathing costumes reinforced this 

image. Others suggest that instead it refers to the 

American military who frequented the area during 

the period of Allied occupation and did not have a 

reputation for personal hygiene (pedocio in Trieste 

dialect also means louse). 

Einige behaupten, dass sich der unschöne Name 

Pedocin im Dialekt auf die hohe Konzentration 

der Badegäste bezieht, die alle wie pedoci 

(Miesmuscheln) dicht zusammengedrängt auf 

den Felsen liegen. Verstärkt wird das Bild noch 

von den schwarzen Badehosen und -anzügen, die 

Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts üblich waren. Andere 

glauben allerdings, dass sich der Name auf die 

amerikanischen Militärs bezieht, die das Strandbad 

während der Besetzung durch die Alliierten 

besuchten und für ihre mangelnde Hygiene 

bekannt waren (denn pedocio heißt auf Triestinisch 

auch Laus).

Proseguendo da Trieste lungo la strada 

Costiera, poco più avanti rispetto 

alla galleria di Grignano, s’incontra la via 

Piccard, che porta alla spiaggia libera dei 

Filtri, scendendo per la strada a fondo 

cieco che si apre sulla sinistra. 

Dalla fine della stradina, basta imboccare 

i gradini sulla sinistra e ci si ritrova in una 

spiaggetta di ciottoli, dove fluiscono delle 

correnti freschissime. Sono le acque dolci 

che sgorgano da uno dei rami sotterranei 

del fiume Timavo, e che vengono raccolte 

nell’edificio ottocentesco ben visibile 

dal piccolo porticciolo e comunemente 

definito Castelletto [50]. Qui un articolato 

sistema di vasche sotterranee e pompe 

raccoglie dalle polle l’acqua che, dopo 

vari filtraggi depurativi (da qui si ipotizza 

derivi il nome della spiaggia), va ad 

approvvigionare la città. 

Continuing from Trieste along the 

coastal road, just before the tunnel of 

Grignano we come to via Piccard, which 

leads to this special beach by going down 

the cul de sac on the left. 

At the end of this track, just follow the 

steps on the left and you will find yourself 

on a pebble beach where fresh water 

currents flow. These are the fresh waters 

that gush from one of the underground 

branches of the River Timavo, and are 

collected in the 19th century building 

clearly visible from the small harbour and 

commonly called the Castelletto [50]. 

Here a complex system of underground 

tanks and pumps collects water from 

pools that, after passing through various 

filters, is purified (hence it is thought 

comes the name of the beach) and goes 

to supply the city. 

Wenn man von Triest auf der 

Küstenstraße entlang fährt, trifft 

man kurz nach dem Tunnel von Grignano 

links auf die Via Piccard, eine Sackgasse, 

die zum freien Strand I Filtri hinabführt.

auf der linken Seite hinuntergehen und 

schon kommt man zu einem Kiesstrand 

mit einem von frischen Strömungen

kommen und deren Sammelbecken 

sich in dem vom kleinen Hafen aus 

gut erkennbaren Gebäude aus dem 

19. Jahrhundert, auch Castelletto [50] 

(Schlösschen) genannt, befindet. Ein 

ausgeklügeltes System an unterirdischen 

Becken und Pumpen sammelt das 

Quellwasser, das nach mehreren 

Filtergängen (daher wahrscheinlich der 

Name des Strandes Filtri) die Stadt speist.

d’acqua le locomotive a vapore della linea 

ferroviaria Trieste-Vienna, fondamentale per i 

traffici commerciali dell’Impero austroungarico. 

Per questo motivo, la strategica postazione e i 

suoi macchinari furono presidiati da un’intera 

compagnia di artiglieri sino al 1915. 

The Castelletto filters were first built in 1854 to 

supply water to the steam locomotives of the 

Trieste-Vienna railway line, which was vital for the 

trade of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. For this 

reason, the strategic location and its equipment 

were manned by an entire artillery company until 

1915.

windsurfing and swimming, water-skiing

San Giusto and Muggia is open all year 

round. The clubs and associations of the

The fame of the regattas in Trieste is 

legendary, especially the Barcolana, 

which has repeatedly seen the best 

skippers in the world racing alongside 

local enthusiasts. But perhaps the most 

wonderful of all is the setting for all of 

this, both above and below the waves.

importance and beauty, from Istro-

appropriate licences can hire boats by

naturalmente uno degli sport più praticati sul 

territorio. Sono presenti sodalizi nautici storici 

che, durante tutto l’anno, incoraggiano 

la vita marinaresca e organizzano attività 

agonistiche ed educative, aperte a soci, ad 

aspiranti velisti e alle scuole. La stagione 

estiva è dedicata soprattutto ai ragazzi, che 

hanno a disposizione un’ampia possibilità di 

scelta tra corsi di differente durata e livello, 

strutturati anche in base all’età. 

Molte scuole di vela triestine organizzano 

weekend o settimane rivolte 

all’apprendimento di teoria e pratica della 

navigazione e propongono pacchetti 

completi anche per chi arriva da fuori città. 

Circoli nautici e società sportive, associazioni 

storiche e istituzioni nazionali dedicate come 

la Lega Navale Italiana, che nella vecchia

and practice of sailing and offer complete 

packages for those coming from out of town. 

Nautical associations and sports clubs, longestablished 

groups and national institutions 

such as the Italian Naval League (Lega Navale 

Italiana), which houses a thematic library in 

the old Lantern lighthouse, have helped to 

make the city one of the most important 

sailing centres in the Mediterranean.

Italiana, die in der alten Lanterna sogar

Nelle strutture triestine lo sport della vela si può 

praticare a partire dall’età di 6 anni grazie a piccole 

imbarcazioni chiamate optimist, progettate 

apposta per i più piccoli, che non superano i 2 

metri e mezzo. Molto apprezzata dai più giovani 

è la disciplina del match race, che permette si 

sfidarsi con imbarcazioni di identica categoria. 

In the sailing clubs of Trieste, you can begin sailing 

at the age of six with the dinghy called optimist, 

which is no more than 2.5 metres in length and 

is especially designed for youngsters. Young 

sailors particularly enjoy the so-called match races 

involving boats of the same category. 

In den Triester Einrichtungen können Kinder dank 

der kleinen Schiffe mit dem Namen Optimist 

schon ab sechs Jahren segeln. Die Schiffe 

wurden extra für die Kleinen entwickelt und sind 

höchstens zweieinhalb Meter lang. Sehr beliebt ist 

bei den Jüngsten auch das sog. Match Race, bei 

dem man sich mit Schiffen der gleichen Kategorie 

gegenseitig herausfordert.

del bacino San Giusto sono protetti dai Moli 

che circondano il porto storico e riparati 

dai venti di tramontana. Aperti tutto l’anno, 

possono ospitare centinaia di ormeggi per 

imbarcazioni da diporto (dagli 8 ai 130 m) e 

disporre anche di aree di svago. Gli approdi 

sono comodi, sicuri e centralissimi, tanto 

da essere conosciuti per il fascino unico di 

ormeggiare in centro città. I fondali all’interno 

del bacino (dai 5 ai 14 m) accolgono anche 

unità di grosso pescaggio. 

Il porto muggesano, a 3 miglia dalle acque 

slovene, si riconosce grazie ai moli color ocra. 

L’ingresso della marina è ampio e dispone 

di oltre 500 posti barca, senza problemi di 

fondali, con ormeggi per maxi yacht sino a 

60 m. 

Il vicino complesso turistico dispone di 350 

appartamenti, un albergo, uno yacht club, un 

centro congressi, palestra, ristorante, enoteca, 

piscina, solarium e negozi.

in the San Giusto basin are protected by

harbour and sheltered from the tramontana 

wind. Open all year round, they can 

accommodate hundreds of pleasure boats 

(from 8m to 130m) and also have recreation 

areas. The landings are comfortable, safe and 

central, known for the unique charm of citycentre 

mooring. The depth of the basin (from 

5m to 14 m) is enough to welcomes fishing 

vessels with a large draft. 

The port of Muggia, 3 miles from Slovenian 

waters, can be easily recognised thanks to its 

ochre-coloured jetties. The entrance to the 

marina is wide and has over 500 moorings, 

with no problems of draft and berths for 

maxi yachts of up to 60m. 

The nearby tourist complex offers 350 

apartments, a hotel, a yacht club, a business 

centre, fitness centre, restaurant, wine bar, 

swimming pool, solarium and shops.

3 Meilen vor der slowenischen Grenze, 

kann man gut an den ockerfarbigen Kais 

erkennen. Die Einfahrt ist breit und die 

Marina verfügt über 500 Anlegeplätze mit 

großer Wassertiefe und mit Ankerplätzen für 

Maxi-Jachten bis zu 60 m. 

Der naheliegende Fremdenverkehrskomplex 

verfügt über 350 Appartements, ein Hotel, 

einen Jachtclub, ein Kongresszentrum, ein 

Fitness-Center, ein Restaurant, eine Enothek, 

ein Schwimmbad, Solarien und Geschäfte.

Für die Triester ist der Segelsport eine wahre 

Leidenschaft. Entlang der Küsten der Provinz liegen 

fast 5000 Schiffe in den verschiedenen Marinas, an 

den Privatkais und in den Sportverbänden.

I una vera e propria tradizione. Ogni 

anno vecchie e nuove leve si presentano 

all’appuntamento decise a sfidare orari 

mattutini e resistenza dell’acqua. Da Muggia 

a Grignano le società si attivano per ospitare 

chi volesse anche solo provare lo sport della 

voga affiancato da istruttori che a volte 

forniscono assistenza con dei motoscafi di 

appoggio. Alle iniziative dedicate ai neofiti 

si affiancano consolidate attività agonistiche 

organizzate dal Comitato regionale della 

Federcanottaggio ma anche dai singoli 

club remieri. Tra queste, spicca la Barcarola, 

regata sprint di canottaggio e canoa con 

una formula molto simile al match race di 

vela. Si disputa nel Bacino San Giusto, tra i 

moli Audace e Bersaglieri, ed è organizzata 

dal Circolo Canottieri Saturnia e dal Circolo 

Marina Mercantile “Nazario Sauro”. 

Anche il windsurf trova spazio in quella 

palestra naturale per gli sport sull’acqua 

che è il golfo triestino, in particolare nella 

ventilata area muggesana di Punta Sottile, 

prediletta dai surfisti.

hands and a new generation of would-be 

skippers prepare themselves to defy the

cold sea. From Muggia to Grignano clubs 

organize themselves to accommodate 

those who simply just want to try the sport 

of rowing with instructors who sometimes 

provide support from speedboats. There 

are initiatives dedicated to newcomers 

and well-established training activities 

organized by the Regional Committee 

of Federcanottaggio (the Italian rowing 

federation), and also by the individual 

rowing clubs. Among these, the Barcarolle 

regatta stands out. It is a rowing and canoe 

sprint event with a formula very similar to 

match sailing. Held in the San Giusto basin 

between the quays Audace and Bersaglieri, 

it is organized by the local clubs Circolo 

Canottieri Saturnia and Circolo Marina 

Mercantile “Nazario Sauro”. 

Windsurfing is also at home in that natural 

space for water sports which is the Gulf 

of Trieste, particularly in the windy area 

of Punta Sottile near Muggia, which is 

especially well-loved by surfers.

Von Muggia bis Grignano gibt es Vereine, 

die alle diejenigen begleiten, die den 

Sport auch einfach nur mal ausprobieren 

und dabei von Lehrern geleitet werden 

wollen, die manchmal selbst mit ihren 

Motorbooten Beistand leisten. Neben den 

Angeboten für die Neulinge gibt es auch 

etablierte Wettkampfaktivitäten, die vom 

Regionalausschuss Federcanotaggio aber 

auch von einzelnen Ruderclubs organisiert 

werden. Der wohl bekannteste Wettkampf 

ist die Barcarola, eine Sprintregatte für 

Ruderer und Kanuten mit einer Formel, die 

dem Match Race Segeln sehr ähnlich ist. 

Austragungsort ist die Bucht San Giusto, 

zwischen dem Molo Audace und dem Molo 

Bersaglieri. Die Organisation übernimmt der 

Circolo Canottieri Saturnia und der Circolo 

Marina Mercantile “Nazario Sauro“. 

Auch das Windsurfen hat in diesem 

natürlichen Wassersportparadies, das der 

Golf von Triest ist, einen festen Platz, vor 

allem in dem Gebiet der Punta Sottile in 

Muggia, das dank der optimalen Winde von 

Surfern bevorzugt wird.

I subacquee ricreative e didattiche. Ci sono 

diversi percorsi possibili, a seconda del 

grado di esperienza. Tra le destinazioni più 

ambite spiccano la Area Marina Protetta di 

Miramare, per le sue attrattive biologiche 

garantite dall’eccezionale livello di tutela e 

salvaguardia dell’area, e il litorale muggesano, 

ottima palestra perché presenta una distesa 

graduale e si presta tanto all’addestramento 

quanto a ospitare giochi di navigazione 

subacquea con bussola di orientamento. 

Ci sono varie associazioni sub: alcune 

dilettantistiche, nate come semplice punto 

di aggregazione, altre aderenti a SSI (Scuba 

Schools International) e CONI, in grado di 

fornire certificazioni, brevetti riconosciuti 

a livello mondiale e di organizzare lezioni 

che vanno dall’assetto di base al primo 

soccorso subacqueo, dallo snorkeling ai 

corsi professionali di fotografia subaquea. 

Si possono fare uscite in mare durante 

tutto l’anno e l’attrezzatura è quasi sempre 

noleggiabile presso le stesse strutture 

specializzate. 

The sea-bed around Trieste offers a whole 

range of underwater experiences for 

both recreation and education. There are 

several possible routes, depending on the 

diver’s degree of experience. Among the 

most popular destinations are the marine 

reserve of Miramare, with its biological 

attractions guaranteed by the exceptional 

level of protection and preservation of the 

area, and the Muggia coast, an excellent 

training ground because of its gentle slope 

which lends itself as much to training as to 

accommodating underwater orientation 

games using a compass. 

There are various scuba associations: some 

amateur, created simply as a meeting place 

for enthusiasts, others members of the SSI 

(Scuba Schools International) and CONI 

(the Italian Olympics Committee) that 

provide certificates, licences recognised 

worldwide and organise lessons ranging 

from basic training to first aid for divers, from 

snorkelling courses to courses of professional 

underwater photography. You can make 

trips at sea throughout the year and the 

equipment can almost always be hired from 

the same place.

mit Kompass organisieren kann. 

Es gibt verschiedene Tauchclubs:

Treffpunkte entstanden sind, und Vereine,

celebrazione anche stando all’asciutto sulle rive, 

grazie ad un sistema di riprese sottomarine. 

For 35 years, one of Trieste’s historic divers’ clubs 

has been organizing the Natale Sub at Christmas: 

every 26th December, divers from the region 

gather in the water to celebrate the festival 

together with a priest who reads a sermon inside 

a Diving Bell in the stretch of sea in front of Piazza 

Unità d’Italia. You can follow the entire service 

from dry land thanks to a system of underwater 

filming.

seit 35 Jahren den Natale Sub: Am 26. Dezember 

jedes Jahres versammeln sich die Taucher der 

Region im Wasser, um zusammen mit einem 

Priester, der in einer Unterwasserglocke vor der 

Piazza Unità d’Italia die Predigt hält, Weihnachten 

zu feiern. Die gesamte Messfeier kann auch 

trockenen Fußes am Ufer verfolgt werden, sie wird 

nämlich live übertragen.

A piano per quanto riguarda gli eventi 

sportivi legati al mare. Sia per la tradizione 

secolare che la contraddistingue, sia per le 

attrattive turistiche dal luogo, sia perché la 

consolidata fama di abili ed esperti navigatori 

che hanno i giuliani - tirati su a refoli di bora 

- ha fatto il giro del mondo seguendo più e 

più rotte. 

La manifestazione più importante del 

calendario nautico locale è senza dubbio 

la Barcolana, regata ormai leggendaria che 

da oltre quarant’anni attira in città, ogni 

secondo fine settimana di ottobre, frotte di 

velisti e di curiosi. Appassionanti sono anche 

gli appuntamenti estivi con la regata velica 

Muggia-Portorose-Muggia, che fa tappa 

fissa nel golfo dal 1976, e con la Fiera nautica 

Vela&Vela, curata dall’omonima associazione, 

che ha catturato l’attenzione dei principali 

importatori e dei cantieri di spicco, suscitando 

grande interesse tra i diportisti locali e non.

first prize as far as sporting events 

connected to the sea are concerned. Be it 

for its centuries-old tradition, for the obvious 

attraction the city holds for tourists or for the 

well-known skills of its own able and expert 

sailors who have been brought up to deal 

with the strong and unpredictable wind, the 

Bora, and who have sailed the world. 

The most important event in the local sailing 

calendar is undoubtedly the Barcolana, the 

regatta that has entered sea-faring legend 

and for over 40 years has drawn skippers, 

crews, knowledgeable spectators and the 

simply curious to the Trieste shoreline every 

second weekend in October. During the 

summer, the emotion-stirring event Muggia- 

Portorose-Muggia regatta has made the Gulf 

a fixed stage since 1976 and has captured the 

interest of the sailing community and nonsailors 

alike, as has the fair Vela&Vela which 

is organised by the association of the same 

name and attracts displays from all the major 

constructors and importers, and visitors of all 

ages and types.

Platz, wenn es um Sportevents geht, 

die mit dem Meer zu tun haben – sowohl 

wegen der jahrhundertelangen Tradition, 

die Triest auszeichnet, als auch wegen der 

Touristenatraktionen vor Ort und nicht zuletzt 

deswegen, weil der Ruf der Profisegler der 

Region, dem die Bora Flügel verleiht, auf 

mehreren Strecken um die Welt gegangen ist. 

Das wichtigste Event des lokalen 

Veranstaltungskalenders ist zweifellos die 

Barcolana – eine mittlerweile legendäre 

Regatta, die seit über 40 Jahren jedes zweite 

Wochenende im Oktober Unmengen an 

Seglern und Interessierten anlockt. Spannend 

sind auch die Sommerveranstaltungen, 

wie z. B. die Segelregatta Muggia-Portorož- 

Muggia, die seit 1976 im Golf ausgetragen 

wird, und die Nautikmesse Vela&Vela, die 

vom gleichnamigen Verein organisiert wird 

und die Aufmerksamkeit der wichtigsten 

Importeure und Werften und großes Interesse 

bei den lokalen Sportseglern geweckt hat.

Da oltre trent’anni la regata velica 

Muggia-Portorose-Muggia è un 

apprezzato appuntamento fisso, ormai 

entrato a pieno titolo tra le manifestazioni 

sportive di interesse regionale. Prima ancora 

che cadessero le divisioni di frontiera via 

terra, la competizione già veniva chiamata 

anche Regata senza confini, a suggellare 

una felice collaborazione con i vicini sloveni. 

Organizzata dallo storico Circolo della Vela di 

Muggia, la gara ha luogo in genere a metà 

giugno e, da qualche anno a questa parte, 

viene inserita in un più vasto calendario di 

eventi che coinvolgono anche Capodistria 

e Pirano: la Settimana Internazionale dei Tre 

Golfi. Le attività sportive, legate alle tradizioni 

marinare e agli sport che caratterizzano 

il golfo triestino, dalla pesca sportiva al 

canottaggio, sono accompagnate da eventi 

culturali ed enogastronomici. 

The Muggia-Portorose-Muggia regatta has 

been a valued sailing event for over 30 

years, and is fully-entitled to be described as 

an event of regional importance. Well before 

the land borders fell, this competition was 

already called the Regatta Sans Frontiers 

to underline the happy collaboration with 

the neighbouring Slovenes. Organised by 

the historical sailing club Circolo della Vela 

di Muggia, it normally takes place in the 

second half of June and for several years 

now it has been one of the races in a sailing 

calendar which also includes competitions 

in Capodistria and Pirano: the Settimana 

Internazionale dei Tre Golfi (International 

Week of the Three Gulfs). The sporting 

activities – linked to the sea-faring tradition 

of the area and sports popular in the Gulf of 

Trieste – include canoeing and fishing, and of 

course there is ample opportunity to try local 

food and take part in cultural events. 

Seit über 30 Jahren ist die Segelregatta 

Muggia-Portorož-Muggia ein fester 

und beliebter Termin, der mittlerweile 

fest zu den Sportveranstaltungen von 

regionalem Interesse gehört. Noch bevor 

die Landesgrenzen geöffnet wurden, 

hieß die Veranstaltung schon grenzenlose 

Regatta und besiegelte die glückliche 

Zusammenarbeit mit den slowenischen 

Landesnachbarn. Die Regatta wird vom 

historischen Segelclub von Muggia 

organisiert, findet gewöhnlich Mitte Juni 

statt und wird seit ein paar Jahren von einem 

reichen Veranstaltungskalender begleitet, der 

auch die Städte Koper und Piran einschließt: 

die Internationale Woche der drei Golfe. Die 

Sportaktivitäten, die alle mit den Traditionen 

und den Sportarten des Golfes von Triest – 

vom Sportangeln bis zum Kanufahren – zu 

tun haben, werden von kulturellen und 

enogastronomischen Veranstaltungen 

abgerundet.

active in the area, not only for organizing sports 

events but also for training younger sailors.

La Barcolana

All’ingresso in città compaiono dei 

cartelli che recitano “Trieste, città della 

Barcolana”. La storica regata velica, che 

dal 1969 avviene ogni anno la seconda 

domenica di ottobre, è ormai un evento 

che caratterizza l’identità del territorio. La 

manifestazione è unica nel suo genere 

perché a contendersi l’ambita Coppa 

d’Autunno ci sono sia professionisti di fama 

internazionale che dilettanti. Sono centinaia 

gli scafi di piccole e grandi dimensioni che 

gareggiano fianco a fianco, senza distinzione 

di sorta, mescolando agonismo e genuino 

divertimento. Partono tutti assieme dalla 

riviera che dà il nome alla competizione e, 

se il vento è propizio, quando il tradizionale 

colpo di cannone apre la gara, schiere 

e schiere di vele spiegate trasformano 

la distesa blu del golfo triestino in una 

spettacolare scia bianca in movimento. È un 

appuntamento davvero emozionante, sia per 

chi partecipa, sia per le migliaia di spettatori 

che assistono alla regata dalle Rive cittadine 

o dal ciglione carsico che si affaccia sul golfo. 

La manifestazione non si esaurisce però nella 

competizione vera e propria. Nella settimana 

che precede l’evento, sul lungomare 

cittadino si allineano le tensostrutture del 

Villaggio Barcolana che ospitano chioschi 

enogastronomici, mercatini di settore e 

incontri dedicati. Trieste diventa per qualche 

giorno capitale mondiale della vela e si 

anima con eventi e concerti. Per centinaia 

di curiosi e appassionati è un divertimento 

anche semplicemente passeggiare tra la 

capitaneria e il Molo Pescheria, dove si può 

ammirare l’affascinante parata degli scafi che 

concorrono alla regata, spesso trasformati 

dagli equipaggi più festosi in allegri locali 

galleggianti. 

Alla competizione principale si affiancano 

anche la Barcolina, riservata ai giovani delle 

categorie optimist e windsurf, e la Barcolana 

Classic, una regata storica nella quale antiche 

e blasonate imbarcazioni, alcune delle 

quali sono veri e propri gioiellini del mare, 

si sfidano su un percorso che va da piazza 

dell’Unità fino al Castello di Miramare. 

Trieste welcomes visitors with signs 

declaring “Trieste – home of the 

Barcolana”. This historic regatta has taken 

place here every second weekend in October 

since 1969 and has become the event which 

best expresses the character of the whole 

area. The Barcolana is unique because it 

sees both professionals of international 

standing and skilled amateurs in competition 

for the Autumn Cup (Coppa d’Autunno). 

Hundreds of craft, great and small, compete 

side-by-side without distinction, combining 

seamanship and genuine sailing pleasure. 

The boats start together from the Riviera

which gives its name to the event and, 

if the wind is right, when the traditional 

cannon-shot opens the race hundreds upon 

hundreds of billowing sails turn the deep 

blue of the Gulf into a spectacular, moving, 

white train. It is a truly heart-stopping 

moment, both for those taking part and for 

the thousands of spectators who watch the 

race from the city shoreline or from along the 

Carso cliffs around the Gulf. 

The Barcolana is, however, not only the race 

itself. For the week preceding the event the 

whole of the Trieste sea-front is transformed 

into the “Villaggio Barcolana” which hosts 

stalls serving local and international food 

specialities, sector-based shops and themed 

meetings. For several days, Trieste becomes 

the international home of the sailing 

community with all types of events and 

concerts to entertain the many visitors who 

make the Barcolana a regular appointment.

alike just to wander between the Capitaneria

and the Molo Pescheria and admire the 

competing boats which are often decorated 

by their crews and transformed into 

welcoming, floating bars. 

Alongside the main event there is also the 

Barcolina, a race for young sailors in the 

optimist class and for windsurfers, and the 

Barcolana Classic, a historical regatta in which 

older and highly-decorated boats, some of 

which are true jewels of the sea, challenge 

each other over a course which goes from 

Piazza dell’Unità to the Castle of Miramare.

Veranstaltung ist einzigartig in ihrer Art, 

denn die Anwärter auf den Herbstpokal 

sind sowohl international bekannte Profis 

als auch Amateure. Hunderte von großen 

und kleinen Schiffen messen sich Seite an 

Seite ohne Typunterscheidung. Kampfgeist 

und pures Vergnügen vermischen sich 

miteinander. Alle starten gemeinsam von 

der Küste, die dem Wettkampf seinen 

Namen gibt, und, wenn der Wind günstig 

steht, verwandeln die geblähten Segel der 

unzähligen Schiffe beim Startschuss das 

Blau des Golfes von Triest in ein weißes 

Meer. Es ist ein wirklich bewegendes 

Erlebnis, sowohl für die Teilnehmer als 

auch für die tausenden Zuschauer, die das 

Event vom Ufer oder von den Karstbergen 

hoch über dem Golf aus verfolgen. Die 

Veranstaltung besteht aber nicht nur aus 

dem Wettbewerb. In der vorhergehenden 

Woche bieten die Pavillons des Villaggio 

Barcola enogastronomische Produkte, Artikel 

für den Segelsport und branchenspezifische 

Treffen. Triest wird einige Tage lang die 

Weltstadt der Segelschiffe mit vielen Events 

und Konzerten. Hunderte von Schaulustigen 

und Begeisterten genießen es einfach, 

vom Hafenamt, der Capitaneria, bis zum 

Molo Peschiera zu schlendern und sich 

die beeindruckende Parade der Schiffe 

anzusehen, die an der Regatta teilnehmen 

und von den Besatzungen in Feierlaune 

oft zu lustigen schwimmenden Lokalen 

umgestaltet werden. 

Neben der Hauptregatta finden auch die 

Barcolina, die den Kleinen der Kategorie 

Optimist und Windsufern vorbehalten 

ist, und die Barcolana Classic statt, eine 

historische Regatta, in der sich antike und 

wappenführende Schiffe – einige sind 

wahrliche Schmuckstücke – auf der Strecke 

von der Piazza Unità bis zum Schloss 

Miramare messen. 


Dal 2003 la media degli iscritti supera le 1.800

lontano 1969, quando alla prima edizione della 

Barcolana, vinta dal Betelgeuse capitanato da 

Piero Napp, parteciparono soltanto 51 barche, già 

tantissime per il numero di scafi a vela presenti 

allora nel Golfo triestino.

place, the race was won by Betelgeuse captained

low number of sailing boats in the Gulf of Trieste 

at that time.

pubblico degli appassionati del mare 

a vela le novità del settore, a inizio aprile, 

Porto San Rocco, a Muggia, ospita Vela&Vela, 

l’unico salone adriatico e mitteleuropeo 

dedicato esclusivamente alla propulsione 

eolica e aperto a qualsiasi visitatore. 

Per l’occasione, negli approdi e nelle zone a 

terra dell’accogliente struttura muggesana 

fanno bella mostra di sé barche, vele, 

attrezzature e accessoristica di ogni genere. 

Girovagano liberamente nel moderno 

marina che si apre verso il suggestivo 

scenario del Golfo, gli adepti del diporto 

velico hanno a disposizione quattro giorni 

per vedere le imbarcazioni, prenotare le 

prove in mare, scoprire novità e anteprime, 

incontrare personaggi, sportivi, imprenditori 

e vip della nautica. Sono presenti i più 

prestigiosi marchi europei e diverse aziende 

del settore scelgono l’appuntamento quale 

vetrina per la presentazione in esclusiva dei 

loro prodotti più innovativi e tecnologici, 

attirando visitatori anche da Austria,

Trieste è da secoli crocevia strategico di 

commerci e il suo porto un frequentato 

approdo, prevalentemente votato al traffico 

mercantile, ben inteso, ma non solo. È 

lunga la lista delle navi da crociera che sono 

salpate dal capoluogo giuliano alla volta di 

Croazia, Grecia e Turchia. L’attenzione verso 

il trasporto passeggeri e le potenzialità 

turistiche della città hanno portato diverse 

grosse società armatoriali a scegliere 

Trieste come meta o punto di partenza per 

collegamenti internazionali e ad inserirla 

in circuiti crocieristici. Sia per la posizione 

strategica, sia per il centralissimo approdo, 

presso la Stazione Marittima [100], a due 

passi dalla splendida Piazza Unità d’Italia, 

l’unica in Europa ad avere un lato aperto

Durante tutto l’anno è attivo un 

servizio passeggeri di trasporto 

marittimo che, con più corse di andata 

e ritorno giornaliere, collega il centro di 

Trieste a Muggia. Partenze e attracchi 

fanno spola tra il Molo Bersaglieri e la 

diga foranea muggesana. Il servizio è 

gestito dalla Delfino Verde Navigazioni in 

collaborazione con l’azienda di trasporti 

pubblici, motivo per il quale sono 

utilizzabili per la tratta anche le tessere 

di abbonamento ai bus cittadini. La 

compagnia gestisce altre due linee che 

però sono attive solo nel periodo estivo, 

da inizio giugno alla prima settimana di 

settembre, e che collegano le Rive triestine 

alle località di Barcola, Grigano, Sistiana 

e Grado, con tre partenze quotidiane dal 

Molo Audace. 

Le imbarcazioni utilizzate per il trasporto, 

recenti motonavi che raggiungono i 26 

metri di lunghezza, sfruttando moderni 

motori, consentono di ridurre al minimo 

i tempi di trasferimento e possono 

trasportare fino a 250 persone. A bordo 

ci sono anche servizio bar, sala di ristoro, 

ponte panoramico, servizi igienici e 

telefono. 

Da fine giungo a settembre, inoltre 

sono attivi i trasferimenti in aliscafo 

e catamarano anche verso alcune 

destinazioni della costa slovena e croata 

come Pirano, Rovigno e Pola. 

Le imbarcazioni utilizzate per il trasporto, 

recenti motonavi che raggiungono i 26 

metri di lunghezza, sfruttando moderni 

motori, consentono di ridurre al minimo

Throughout the year there is a regular 

sea-link connecting the centre of 

Trieste with Muggia. The ferries leave 

from and arrive at the Molo Bersaglieri in 

Trieste and the outer sea-wall in Muggia. 

The boats are run by the company Delfino 

Verde Navigazioni in collaboration with 

the municipal transport authority, which 

means that the normal city bus travel 

cards can be used for travel on this route. 

The company also operates two other 

sea routes, which only run in the summer 

months from the beginning of June to 

early September, connecting the Trieste 

sea-front to the towns of Barcola, Grigano, 

Sistiana and Grado, with three departures 

daily from the Molo Audace. 

The boats used on all these routes are 

modern motor launches of up to 26 metres 

in length, with the latest engines which 

reduce the journey time and can carry 

up to 250 passengers. There is also a bar, 

snack-bar, viewing platform, toilets and a 

telephone link. 

Der Personentransport per Schiff ist 

ganzjährig in Betrieb und verbindet 

das Zentrum von Triest merhmals am 

Tag mit Muggia. Die Schiffe verkehren 

zwischen dem Molo Bersaglieri und dem 

Hafendamm in Muggia. Der Verbindung 

wird von Delfino Verde Navigazioni in 

Zusammenarbeit mit einem Betrieb der 

öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel betrieben, 

weshalb für die Überfahrt auch die Abos 

für die Stadtbusse gelten. Die Gesellschaft 

betreibt zwei weitere Linien, die allerdings 

nur im Sommer von Anfang Juni bis zur 

ersten Septemberwoche funktionieren 

und die die Uferpromenade von Triest, die 

sog. Rive, mit den Orten Barcola, Grignano, 

Sistiana und Grado durch drei Fahrten vom 

Molo Audace aus verbinden. 

Die für den Transport benutzten Schiffe 

sind neue, bis zu 26 m lange Motorschiffe 

mit modernen Motoren, wodurch die 

Fahrzeit minimiert wird und pro Fahrt bist 

zu 250 Personen transportiert werden 

können. An Bord befinden sich auch ein 

Café, eine Snackbar, ein Panorama-Deck, 

Toiletten und Telefon. 

Von Ende Juni bis September gibt 

es außerdem Verbindungen mit 

Tragflügelbooten und Katamaranen zu 

einigen wichtigen Zielen der slowenischen 

und kroatischen Küste, wie z. B. Piran, 

Rovinji und Pula.

Trieste è considerata uno dei luoghi di pesca più 

fertili del territorio italiano. Tra le destinazioni più 

ambite dai pescatori amatoriali, sia di fondo che 

di superficie, c’è la diga foranea Luigi Rizzo, dove 

abbondano tordi, corvine, ghiozzi e bavose per 

la prima, aguglie, boghe, sugarelli, sgombri e 

latterini per la seconda. Nel periodo invernale non 

mancano seppie e calamari. 

Trieste is considered one of the richest fishing 

grounds in Italy. Among the most popular 

destinations for amateur fishermen, both 

surface and deep-sea, is around the Luigi Rizzo 

breakwater, where thrushes, crows, and blennies 

and then needlefish, mackerel, horse mackerel, 

bogue and smelt all abound. In winter there are 

cuttle fish and squid. 

Triest gilt als einer der fischreichsten Gegenden 

in ganz Italien. Unter den beliebtesten Zielen 

der Hobbyfischer, sowohl für Grundangler als 

auch für Oberflächen-Fischer, ist der Hafendamm 

Luigi Rizzo, wo sehr viele Kuckuckslippfische, 

Meerraben, Grundeln und Seeschmetterlinge, 

Knurrhähne für die erste Kategorie und 

Hornhechte, Gelbstriemen, Stöcker, Makrelen und 

kleine Ährenfische für die zweite zu Hause sind. Im 

Winter gibt es viele Tintenfische und Kalmare.

Marano e l’apporto di vari corsi d’acqua, 

ricchi di nutrienti, rendono il Golfo di 

Trieste un’area particolarmente produttiva 

dal punto di vista ittico. La pesca, 

oltre a essere una millenaria pratica di 

sopravvivenza, diventa motore d’iniziative 

turistiche, formative e sportive. Dal 1999, 

è stata regolamentata con un decreto 

ministeriale l’attività di pescaturismo, 

nuovo strumento di divulgazione della 

cultura del mare e di sensibilizzazione 

verso l’ambiente. Ma anche fonte 

alternativa di sostegno economico per i 

pescatori, che possono ospitare a bordo 

delle proprie imbarcazioni un certo 

numero di persone e offrire escursioni 

lungo le coste. A Trieste sono organizzate 

sia da privati che dall’Area Marina Protetta

le lampare e gli impianti di mitilicoltura

individuals from the Miramare Protected 

Marine Area, managed by WWF Italy, 

especially for teaching about fishing with 

lampara (= lights) and about the mussel 

beds that dot the sea along the coastline. 

The Villaggio del Pescatore (=fisherman’s 

village) is the place to go for a meal based 

on the day’s freshly-caught catch. A centre 

linked to the Italian Olympic Organisation 

and various sports clubs linked to the 

world of fishing organize activities both 

for adults and children from technical 

meetings to courses about sustainable 

fishing to fishing-boat races.

un Marano und verschiedene, 

an Nährstoffen reiche Wasserläufe

besonders fischreichen Gebiet. Der 

Fischfang ist neben einer tausendjährigen 

Überlebensstrategie auch Motor für 

Initiativen für Touristen, Interessierte und 

Sportler. 1999 wurde der Fischtourismus, 

eine neue Form der Verbreitung der 

Meereskultur und der Sensibilisierung für 

die Umwelt, durch einen ministeriellen 

Erlass reglementiert. Zugleich stellt er 

eine alternative Hilfe und finanzielle 

Spritze für die Fischer dar, die an Bord ihrer 

Schiffe eine gewisse Anzahl an Personen 

mitnehmen und mit ihnen Exkursionen 

entlang der Küste machen. In Triest werden 

die Initiativen sowohl von Privaten als 

auch vom WWF Meeresschutzgebiet 

Miramare organisiert, vor allem um den 

Nachtfischfang und die überall sichtbaren 

Miesmuschelanlagen bekannt zu machen. 

Die frisch gefangene Fische werden dann 

vom Ittiturismo in Villaggio del Pescatore 

zubereitet. Ein CONI-Zentrum und 

verschiedene Fischerei-Sportverbände 

organisieren hingegen Aktivitäten für 

Jugendliche und Erwachsene: von 

Technikkursen für Fischer bis zu Kursen für 

nachhaltige Fischerei.

Dal 2004, amministrazioni, enti pubblici 

e UE hanno promosso un modello di 

gestione integrata – economica, ambientale 

e socio-turistica - per il distretto dell’Alto 

Adriatico, potenziando il settore della 

pesca e dell’acquacoltura, il riordino delle 

mitilicolture e la sua valenza di collegamento 

tra molluschicoltura, piccola pesca, 

ripopolamento e fruizione ambientale. 

Una delle realtà più vivaci nel settore della 

produzione dei prodotti ittici regionali è 

il Consorzio Ittico del Golfo di Trieste, che 

ha promosso l’istituzione del marchio IGP 

(Indicazione Geografica Protetta, riconosciuta 

dall’Unione Europea, che garantisce 

sicurezza, tipicità e genuinità) per la sardina di 

saccaleva, uno dei più comuni pesci pelagici 

del Golfo di Trieste. Nell’Elenco Nazionale 

dei Prodotti Tradizionali sono state inserite 

anche altre nove specie ittiche: mormore 

di Miramare, passere coi ovi, calamaro de 

saccaleva, canocie de nassa, dondolo, mussolo 

de scoio, pedoci de Trieste, sardoni in savor, 

sardoni salati. 

Since 2004, local governments, public 

organisations and the EU have promoted 

a model of integrated management 

- economic, environmental and sociotourism 

- for the area of the upper Adriatic, 

by strengthening the fishing industry and 

aquaculture, reforming the administration 

of the mussel-beds and re-addressing the 

balance between small-scale fishing, the 

exploitation of shellfish beds, restocking 

and recreation. One of the most dynamic 

organisations in the production of regional 

fish products is the Consorzio Ittico del 

Golfo di Trieste (= Fisheries Consortium of 

the Gulf of Trieste), which has promoted

the establishment of the trade mark 

IGP (Protected Geographical Indication, 

recognised by the European Union and 

which ensures quality, local type and 

authenticity) to sardines, locally-caught from 

a Saccaleva, one of the most common oily 

fish in the Gulf of Trieste. Nine other species 

of local fish have also been added to the 

national register of traditional foodstuffs: 

bream from Miramare, flounders with ovi, 

saccaleva-caught squid, squill, rock-fish, scoio 

mussels, Trieste mussels, pilchards in savor 

and salted pilchards. 

2004 haben Verwaltung, öffentliche 

Ämter und EU ein Modell für eine 

integriertes Management (ökonomisch, 

soziotouristisch und umweltbezogen) für 

die Obere Adria geschaffen, das die Fischerei 

und die Fischzucht, die Umgestaltung der 

Miesmuschelanlagen und ihre Bedeutung 

zusammen mit der Muschelzucht, der 

kleinen Fischerei, dem Wiederbesetzen 

und der Verwendung der Umwelt wieder 

stärker aufwertet. Eine der dynamischsten 

Organisationen der Fischproduktion 

in der Region ist die Genossenschaft 

Consorzio Ittico del Golfo di Trieste. Sie hat 

die geschützte Herkunftsbezeichung IGP 

(Indicazione Geografica Protetta= Geschützte 

Geograpische Herkunftsbezeichnung, die 

von der EU anerkannt ist und Sicherheit, 

Besonderheit und Reinheit verspricht) für die 

nachts mit der speziellen Methode Saccaleva 

gefangene Sardinen, einer der geläufigsten 

Fische im Golf von Triest, initiiert. In die 

traditionelle Fischliste Italiens wurden auch 

weitere neun Fischarten aufgenommen: 

Marmorbrassen von Miramare, Plattfische 

mit Eiern, mit der Saccaleva gefangene 

Kalmaren, mit der Reuse gefangene 

Heuschreckenkrebse, rauhe Venusmuscheln, 

Arche Noah-Muscheln vom Fels, Triester 

Miesmuscheln, marinierte Sardinen (in savor), 

gesalzene Sardinen. 


La sardina è un pesce di piccole dimensioni, dal 

corpo allungato, ricoperto di grosse squame, 

fusiforme con la parte ventrale ovalizzata e 

leggermente compresso lateralmente. Ha un 

capo prominente e acuto. La colorazione, tipica 

delle specie pelagiche, è azzurro-verdastra sul 

dorso, argentea sui fianchi e sul ventre. Possono 

essere presenti alcune chiazze bruno-scure lungo 

il fianco. 

The sardine is a small fish with a slightly oval, 

elongated body covered with large scales and 

with a prominent, pointed head. The colouring 

is typical of the pelagic species – a greenish-blue 

back with silvery sides and belly. There can be 

some dark brown patches along the sides. 

Die Sardine ist ein kleiner, seitlich abgeflachter 

Fisch mit einem länglichen, zylinderförmigen 

Körper, großen Schuppen und ovaler Bauchpartie. 

Der Kopf ist vorstehend und spitz. Die für 

pelagische Arten typische Farbe ist blau-grünlich

Fishing with lamps | Nachtfischfang 

Sino a inizio Novecento, nel Golfo triestino 

la pesca del pesce azzurro si praticava 

essenzialmente con reti d’incetto (sardellere) 

e alla deriva, mentre nella vicina costa croata 

il pesce veniva attirato da fonti luminose 

[118] poste su una piccola imbarcazione 

in una zona confinata (peschiera), poi 

delimitata dalle reti di barche più grandi. 

Un metodo produttivo ma costoso, almeno 

fino a quando, dopo la prima guerra 

mondiale, i pescatori napoletani trapiantati 

a Trieste iniziarono a utilizzare lampade 

alogene per attrarre il pesce non più verso 

la costa ma a largo. L’esodo istriano del 

secondo dopoguerra rinfoltì le schiere 

di barche e pescatori e la disponibilità di 

pesce azzurro crebbe tanto da rendere 

necessaria la ricerca di nuovi mercati e 

lo sviluppo di metodi di conservazione 

e inscatolamento. Da allora la pesca con 

le lampare si è ulteriormente sviluppata, 

con innovazioni tecnologiche che hanno 

portato alla protezione e direzionabilità delle 

lampade, al potenziamento dei generatori 

luminosi, all’introduzione di strumentazioni 

elettroniche e nuovi materiali per la 

costruzione delle reti. 

Until the early 20th century, fishing 

for bluefish in the Gulf of Trieste was 

carried out primarily with driftnets called 

sardellere, while along the nearby coast of 

Croatia fish were attracted by lights placed 

[118] on a small boat in a confined area 

(peschiera) which was then surrounded 

by the nets of larger boats. An expensive 

method, but after the First World War 

Neapolitan fishermen who moved to 

Trieste began to use halogen lamps to 

attract the fish no longer towards the coast 

but seawards. The post-war exodus from 

Istria expanded the local fishing fleet and 

catches of bluefish grew to such an extent 

that new markets had to be sought and 

new methods of canning and conserving 

had to be developed. Since then, fishing

with technological innovations that led to 

protection and manoeuvrability of the lamps, 

the improvement of the light generators, the 

introduction of electronic instruments and 

new materials for making the nets. 

Bis Anfang der 90-er Jahre wurde im Golf 

von Triest vor allem mit Fangnetzen (ital. 

saredellere) gefischt und Brandungsfischerei 

betrieben, während die Fische an der nahen 

kroatischen Küste durch an einem kleinen 

Schiff befestigte Lichtquellen [118] an eine 

bestimmte Stelle gelockt wurden, die dann 

von den Netzen größerer Schiffe eingegrenzt 

wurde. Eine produktive Methode, die 

allerdings sehr kostspielig war – vor allem 

als die aus Neapel nach Triest gekommenen 

Fischer nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg anfingen, 

Halogenlampen zu benutzen, um die Fische 

nicht mehr an der Küste sondern im offenen 

Meer anzulocken. Die istrische Abwanderung 

nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg erhöhte die 

Zahl der Schiffe und der gefangenen Fische. 

Für die immer größeren Mengen an Fisch 

mussten neue Märkte her, und somit neue 

Konservierungs- und Verpackungsmethoden. 

Von da an hat sich der Nachtfischfang 

mit Lampen weiter entwickelt, und 

dank technischer Erneuerungen sind die 

Lampen jetzt geschützt und verstellbar, die 

Lichtquellen stärker, die Geräte elektronisch 

und die Netze aus einem neuem Material.

imbarcazione ausiliaria. Dotate di un motore di 

propulsione con potenza tra gli 80 e i 250 cv, non 

superano i 16 metri di lunghezza. Il loro utilizzo è 

possibile date la limitata estensione dell’area di 

pesca, la bassa profondità media dei fondali e la 

breve durata dell’azione di pesca (in genere 8 ore 

al massimo). 

The Saccaleve, local Triestine boats used for lampfishing, 

leave port at dusk accompanied by a small 

auxiliary boat, a caiccio. They have engines of 

between 80 and 250hp, and are never more than 

16 metres in length. Boats as small as these can 

be used because of the limited area of the fishing 

grounds, the shallow depth of the water and the 

short duration of a fishing trip – rarely more than 

eight hours. 

Die sog. Saccaleve, eine Triester Schiffsart, die 

als Nachtfischkutter benutzt wird, fahren bei 

Sonnenuntergang aufs Meer, begleitet von einem 

Kaik, einem kleinen Hilfboot. Sie verfügen über 

einen Antriebsmotor mit 80 bis 250 PS und sind 

nicht länger als 15 m. Ihr Gebrauch ist deshalb 

möglich, weil die Fischfangzone begrenzt, der 

Meergrund nicht sehr tief und die Fischfangdauer 

(normalerweise max. 8 Std.) kurz ist.

Pescaturismo 

Fishing tourism | Pescaturismo – Urlaub mit Fischern 

Dall’esplorazione dei fondali marini alla 

levata delle reti, dall’uscita notturna 

in mare alla degustazione di quanto 

appena pescato. Sono le nuove frontiere 

triestine del pescaturismo, finalizzato 

alla promozione delle risorse del Golfo, 

della tradizione peschereccia locale e 

di una modalità sostenibile di essere 

turisti, che passa attraverso la conoscenza 

dell’ambiente marino e costiero da 

tutelare. I pescaturisti prendono il largo 

su imbarcazioni private o dell’Area Marina 

Protetta di Miramare per conoscere i 

pescatori delle saccaleve, localmente 

chiamate lampare, e scoprire le difficoltà e 

le soddisfazioni del mestiere, partecipando 

a vere e proprie battute di pesca, anche 

notturna. Nel corso dell’escursione, la 

familiarizzazione con la filiera dei prodotti 

ittici del Nord Adriatico permette di 

costruire un nuovo approccio con il 

pescato, da intendersi anche come risorsa 

biologica e fonte di biodiversità, attraverso 

un contatto emozionante con la natura 

e un’esperienza diretta con una realtà 

economica del territorio. 

From the exploration of the sea bed to 

raising nets, from night-time excursions 

to tasting your own freshly-caught fish. 

These are the new frontiers of fishing 

tourism around Trieste which aims at 

promoting the resources of the Gulf, of the 

local fishing tradition and a sustainable 

way of being a tourist which must include 

an understanding of the marine and costal 

environment to be protected. Fishing 

Tourists take to sea either in private boats 

or in those belonging to the Area Marina 

Protetta (= Marine Protected Area) of 

Miramare to meet the fishermen of the 

Saccaleve, called locally lampare, where 

they can learn about the hardships and 

the satisfactions of the trade and take part 

in a genuine fishing trip, by night as well. 

During the trip, a growing understanding 

of the types of fish from the north Adriatic 

will enable the visitor to see fishing in a 

new light, to view the sea as a biological 

resource and the home of biodiversity and 

have direct experience of both contact with 

nature and the economic life of the area. 

Vom Erforschen des Meeresgrundes 

bis zum Werfen der Fangnetze, vom 

Nachtfischfang bis zur Verkostung der frisch 

gefangenen Fische – das alles umfasst der 

sog. Pescaturismo, der Urlaub mit Fischern 

in Triest, der die Resourcen des Golfes und 

die lokale Fischtradition wieder aufleben 

lässt. Er bietet eine nachhaltige Form von 

Tourismus, bei der man die zu schützende 

Wasser- und Küstenwelt kennenlernt. 

Die Touristen begleiten die Privatschiffe 

oder die Schiffe des Meeresschutzgebiets 

Miramare aufs Meer und lernen die Fischer 

der Saccaleve, des Nachtfischfangs, und 

die Schwierigkeiten und Genugtuungen 

des Fischerberufs kennen. Sie nehmen 

dabei am wirklichen Fischfang teil, auch 

nachts. Im Laufe des Ausflugs machen die 

Gäste Bekanntschaft mit den wichtigsten 

Fischen der Nordadria, was ihnen dabei 

hilft, die Fische von einer ganz anderen 

Seite zu sehen, nämlich als biologische 

Resource und Teil der Artenvielfalt, all dies 

im aufregenden Kontakt mit der Natur 

und durch die direkte Erfahrung eines 

Wirtschaftszweigs der Gegend.

Youngsters, fishing and sport | Sportangeln für Jugendliche 

Trieste esiste un centro CONI 

A di avviamento allo Sport della 

pesca che si preoccupa soprattutto 

di avvicinare correttamente al mare i 

ragazzi (di età compresa tra i sei e i tredici 

anni), rendendoli partecipi delle sue 

problematiche e facendo conoscere la 

realtà locale. Attraverso dei corsi formativi, 

i piccoli partecipanti possono apprendere 

le corrette tecniche di pesca delle varie 

specie rispettando i cicli riproduttivi 

e biologici, abituandosi al contempo 

alla disciplina atletica con un’adeguata 

attività motoria di base, esercizi e giochi 

organizzati in base alla loro età. 

Il corso principale è orientato a una pesca 

sostenibile e recupera alcune tecniche 

tramandate dai vecchi pescatori. Le lezioni 

sono tenute presso l’impianto sportivo 

del Molo Fratelli Bandiera da istruttori

federali e prevedono l’insegnamento delle 

tecniche di preparazione delle attrezzature, 

delle specie ittiche presenti nel golfo 

triestino, con particolare riguardo al 

rispetto dell’ambiente. Nella fase finale del 

corso si tengono alcune lezioni sulle gare 

di lancio tecnico, specialità sportiva che si 

pratica a terra. 

There is a CONI (Italian Olympic 

Committee) training centre in Trieste 

which aims at giving young people 

(from 6 to 13 years of age) the right 

introduction to the sea, by making 

them understand the problems and 

teaching them about the local history and 

conditions. Through a series of training 

courses, the young participants learn the 

correct fishing techniques for the various 

species respecting their reproductive 

and biological cycles, while at the same 

time not ignoring physical training by 

appropriate activities, exercises and games 

organized according to age. 

The main course is about sustainable 

fishing and looks into some of the 

techniques used by earlier generations 

of fishermen. Lessons are held at the 

sports centre at the quay called “Molo 

Fratelli Bandiera” and are taught by 

instructors from the national federation. 

The pupils are taught how to prepare their 

equipment, the species of fish found in 

the Gulf of Trieste and a special regard for 

the environment. Towards the end of the 

course there are lessons and competitions 

for casting the net, a sport which can also 

be practiced on land. 

In Triest gibt es ein CONI-Zentrum für 

die Anleitung zum Sportangeln. Ziel 

ist es, junge Leute (im Alter von sechs 

bis dreizehn) auf korrekte Weise fürs 

Meer zu interessieren, indem man sie 

an die Problematiken heranführt und 

ihnen die lokale Realität näher bringt. In 

Kursen erlernen die Kleinen die korrekten 

Angeltechniken unter Berücksichtigung 

der Fortpflanzungszyklen und des 

biologischen Kreislaufs und gewöhnen 

sich mit einer adäquaten körperlichen 

Ertüchtigung durch Übungen und je nach 

Alter unterschiedlichen Spielen zugleich an 

die atheltische Disziplin. 

Der Hauptkurs basiert auf nachhaltigem 

Angeln und belebt einige von alten 

Fischern überlieferte Techniken. Der 

Unterricht wird in der Sportanlage am 

Molo Fratelli Bandiera von Verbandslehrern 

gehalten und sieht die Vorbereitung 

der Angelgeräte und das Studium der 

Fischarten im Golf von Triest vor, unter 

besonderer Berücksichtigung der Umwelt. 

In der Endphase des Kurses werden die 

Casting-Wettkämpfe behandelt, eine 

Angelsportdisziplin, die an Land praktiziert 

wird.

Dal dicembre 2010, chiunque effettui in Italia 

pesca a scopo sportivo o ricreativo in mare 

deve comunicare l’esercizio delle sue attività al 

Ministero delle Politiche agricole alimentari e 

forestali. In caso di controllo, per non incorrere in 

sanzioni, bisogna esibire l’attestato dell’avvenuta 

comunicazione che funzionerà da titolo per 

l’esercizio della pesca (da terra, da natante e 

subacquea) con validità triennale. 

Since December 2010, anyone who wants to 

fish in the sea for either sport or recreation must 

inform the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food 

and Forests. To avoid financial penalties, if there is 

a check you must show the receipt proving you 

made this communication. This allows you to fish 

from land, boats or under water for a period of 

three years. 

Seit Dezember 2010 muss jeder, der aus 

sportlichen oder Freizeitgründen in Italien im 

Meer fischt, dem Landwirtschaftsministerium 

seine Tätigkeit melden. Um Strafen zu vermeiden, 

muss man im Falle einer Kontrolle das Zertifikat für 

die eingegangene Mitteilung vorzeigen, das drei 

Jahre lang als Fischerschein (an Land, auf und im 

Meer) gültig ist.

mare e le sue bizzarre peculiarità sono molto 

apprezzati anche on line. 

Il solo stabilimento Pedocin è sostenuto 

su Facebook, principale social network del 

momento, da ben 4 diversi gruppi di fan 

che gestiscono aneddoti, aggiornamenti e 

testimonianze dei fedeli frequentatori. 

Spopolano anche le applicazioni per iPhone, 

iPod touch e iPad, come Gigo Trieste, che 

dispensa informazioni utili e aggiornate 

sui punti di interesse turistico in provincia, 

e permette di raggiungerli sfruttando un 

intuitivo sistema di navigazione satellitare. 

O come la guida multimediale del Civico 

Museo del Mare, distribuita al suo interno 

su dispositivi iPod touch, che permettono di 

esplorare in autonomia le 18 sale espositive 

e i giardini, attraverso contributi audio e 

video, immagini, disegni originali e testi di 

approfondimento. Esiste addirittura una 

guida interattiva dell’Università di Trieste 

che consente di riconoscere le più comuni 

specie di macroalghe della Costiera triestina 

(Alghe di barcola). Non poteva mancare 

un’applicazione dedicata ai velisti con un 

corso di vela a fumetti (Jibeho)– disponibile 

gratuitamente in App Store in italiano e 

dialetto triestino! – che spiega le principali 

manovre in regata attraverso una serie di 

sequenze illustrate.

and dedicated applications, Trieste, its 

waters and its individual identity are all highly 

appreciated by the on-line community. 

The bathing area – Pedocin – alone is 

supported on Facebook, the principal social 

network of the day, by no fewer than four 

different fan groups, who post anecdotes, 

up-dates and first-hand comments by its 

faithful users. iPhone, iPod touch and iPad 

apps are also popular, such as Gigo Trieste 

which gives out useful, up-to-the-minute 

information about points of interest for 

tourists throughout the area, and enables 

visitors to reach them by exploiting an 

intuitive system of satellite navigation. 

Or such as the multi-media guide to the 

Civico Museo del Mare (Civic Museum of the 

Sea) which is available inside the museum 

on 20 iPod touch devices and allows visitors 

to explore the 18 exhibition rooms and 

the gardens in complete autonomy and in 

addition gives them and audio and video 

guide, pictures, original drawings and 

extensive explanations. There is even an 

interactive guide produced by the University 

of Trieste which illustrates the most common 

species of macro algae along the Trieste 

coast (Alghe di barcola). And there just had 

to be an app dedicated to yachtsmen and 

women; this is a training course in the form 

of comic-book illustrations (Jibeho) which 

can be downloaded free of charge from App 

Store in both Italian and Triestine dialect!, 

and which explains the main maneuvers in a 

regatta in a series of illustrated sequences. 

Betrachtet man die zahlreichen 

Internetseiten, Foren und 

Anwendungen, so sind Triest, sein Meer und 

seine bizarren Eigenschaften auch online 

sehr geschätzt. 

Allein das Strandbad Pedocin hat in 

Facebook, dem momentan wichtigsten 

Social Network, gut vier verschiedene 

Fangruppen, die die Anekdoten, 

Aktualisierungen und Zeugnisse der treuen 

Besucher verwalten. 

Ein Riesenerfolg sind auch die iPhone-, 

iPod touch und iPad-Anwendungen wie 

Gigo Trieste mit nützlichen und aktuellen 

Infos zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten in 

der Provinz, die dank eines intuitiven 

Navigationssatellitensytems auch einfach 

erreicht werden können. Oder z. B. die 

multimedialen Führer des städtischen 

Meeresmuseums, die als iPod touch 

verteilt werden und mit denen man 

die 18 Ausstellungssäle und die Gärten 

selbstständig erforschen kann – alles 

mit Audio- und Videobeiträgen, Bildern, 

Originalzeichnungen und Texten zur 

Vertiefung. Es gibt sogar einen interaktiven 

Führer der Universität Triest, mit dem man 

die bekanntesten Makroalgen der Triester 

Küste (Algen von Barcola) entdecken kann. 

Eine Anwendung für Segler fehlt natürlich 

auch nicht - ein Segelkurs als Comic 

(Jibeho), der in den App Stores kostenlos auf 

Italienisch und Triestinisch erhältlich ist und 

durch eine Reihe von illustrierten Sequenzen 

die Hauptmanöver bei der Regatta erklärt.
