Umbilical hernias have historically been repaired without mesh resulting in
recurrence rates in some series of up to 40%.
A total of 100 patients who underwent umbilical and paraumbilical hernia repair over an
8-year period were studied retrospectively.
Our data suggest that prosthetic mesh repair is ideal for
managing primary and recurrent umbilical hernias in both obese
and non-obese patients.
