Need for Speed
Durch hohe Investitionen in Know-How, Fertigungstechnologie, Logistikkompetenz
E Light has many extraordinary properties. One of these is its velocity – the measure of all things
for speed. As a company that works with light in all its facets everyday, we naturally have a special
relationship with this speed. But not just us – most people find high speeds attractive: They are hard
to attain and often associated with a little danger.
This is also the case in business: Being fast places high demands on the organisation and things
get expensive, if these demands are not met. The market rightly always expects more top speed
– in product development, in communication, in production, in logistics.
At XAL, we have set ourselves the task of meeting these expectations and even exceeding
them where possible. By making big investments in know-how, production technology,
logistics competence and constantly enhancing our organisation, we have for years aimed
to reduce the time-to-market of our production innovations, the reaction times to customer
queries as well as order processing times and have thus developed into a company whose
corner stones of success including excellent product design, a high degree of innovation and,
increasingly, speed.
We intend to consistently follow this chosen path and make further investments and improvements
in order to become even quicker for our customers in many areas. After all, one thing applies to our
customers as it does to us: Speed is fun!
I La luce possiede molte caratteristiche straordinarie.
Velo-City Bikeway, Toronto / Canada
D Chris Hardwicke, Architekt (bei Sweeny
Sterling Finlayson & Co. in Toronto) und Radfahrer
(als aktives Mitglied des Toronto Cycling
Committee) aus Überzeugung, hat eine
Zukunftsvision: ein System von transparenten
Fahrradtunnels, die seine Heimatstadt Toronto
wie ein transparentes Spinnennetz durchziehen
sollen, als muskelbetriebene Individual-Hochbahn
gewissermaßen, die die Lebenskultur
seiner Stadt grundsätzlich neu definieren würde.
Sein Velo-City Netzwerk hochgelegener, glasüberdachter
Bike-Röhren soll dabei möglichst
sanft mit der städtischen Infrastruktur umgehen
und keine neuen Schneisen ins urbane Gefüge
schlagen. Stattdessen plant Hardwicke, seine
futuristischen Radweg-Röhren entlang bestehender
Wege und Verkehrsadern zu führen:
Stadtautobahnen, Eisenbahngeleise, Hochspannungsleitungen
etc. Das Ziel: kein dichtes
Innenstadt-Radwege-Netzwerk zu errichten
(dort, so sagt Hardwicke, sind konventionelle
Radwege durchaus ausreichend), sondern größere
Entfernungen zu überbrücken und entfernte
Stadtteile miteinander gewissermaßen durch
Fahrrad-Autobahnen zu verbinden. Die transparenten
Fahrradröhren sollen in ca. 5 m Höhe
auf schmalen Pfeilern montiert werden. Rampen
unterhalb der Röhren sollen Radfahrern die Zufahrt
ermöglichen, wobei der Neigungswinkel
nicht nur fahrrad- sondern auch rollstuhlfreundlich
ausgelegt werden soll. Nach Hardwickes
Berechnungen sollen die geschlossenen Röhren
auch entscheidende Vorteile in puncto Luftwiderstand
bieten und so die Effizienz der muskelbetriebenen
Fortbewegung um bis zu 90 % steigern.
Die theoretischen Vorteile von Velo-City
liegen auf der Hand: leiser, umweltfreundlicher
Verkehr mit einem Siebtel des Platzbedarfs
von Auto-Verkehrswegen. Und die optimierte
Aerodynamik der Röhren soll sich auch durch
einen sportlichen Nebeneffekt bezahlt machen:
Reisegeschwindigkeiten von bis zu 50 km/h sind
darin auch für Normalradfahrer erzielbar. Zum
E Chris Hardwicke, an architect (at Sweeny
Sterling Finlayson & Co. in Toronto) and cyclist
(as an active member of the Toronto Cycling
Committee) by conviction, has a vision of the
future: A system of transparent bicycle tunnels
that will criss-cross his hometown of Toronto
like a see-through spider’s web, as a musclepowered
personal elevated track as it were,
which would fundamentally redefine the living
culture of his city. The elevated, glass-covered
bike tubes of his Velo-City Network should treat
the urban infrastructure as gently as possible
and not beat any new forest aisles into the urban
jungle. Instead, Hardwicke is planning to run his
futuristic cycle path tubes along existing roads
and traffic arteries: Urban expressways, railway
tracks, high-voltage lines, etc. The objective is
not to install a dense inner-city network of cycle
tracks (there are more than enough conventional
cycle paths there already, says Hardwicke), but
to bridge larger distances and link remote city
districts with each other through some form
of bicycle motorways. The transparent bicycle
tubes would be installed on narrow supports at
a height of about 5 metres. Ramps beneath the
tubes will give cyclists access, with the slope
angle designed to be not only bicycle, but also
wheelchair-friendly. According to Hardwicke’s
calculations, the enclosed tubes should also offer
decisive advantages in terms of drag and thus
increase the efficiency of this muscle-powered
form of locomotion by up to 90%. The theoretical
benefits of Velo-City are plain to see: Quiet, environmentally
friendly traffic using a seventh of the
space taken up by roads designed for cars. And
the optimised aerodynamics of the tubes should
also pay for themselves with a sporty side-effect:
Travelling speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph) can
also be achieved in them by normal cyclists. By
comparison, the average speed of the Tour de
France is currently about 40 km/h (25 mph).
I Chris Hardwicke, architetto (presso Sweeny
Sterling Finlayson & Co. in Toronto) e ciclista
minimo impatto possibile sulle infrastrutture cittadine
evitando di tracciare nuove piste nel tessuto
urbano. Hardwicke progetta, infatti, di installare
i suoi futuristici tubi ciclabili abbinandoli a vie e
dovrebbero assicurare vantaggi determinanti in
fatto di resistenza dell’aria e migliorare l’efficienza
della pedalata e l’andatura fino al 90 %. I vantaggi
i ciclisti normali potranno raggiungere andature
sostenute, fino a 50 km/h.
Tilke als weltweit führender Experte, u.a.
ihm konzipierten neuen F1-Rennkurses in Bahrain
E German architect and amateur racing driver
Hermann Tilke is not only considered an international
leading expert in the construction of Formula
1 race tracks, including courses in Malaysia,
China, Japan, Italy, Germany, Austria, Turkey and
Spain, which he has built since the 1990s. Tilke
has now also realised a competence centre for
a legend of German car building near to the new
F1 race track in Bahrain, which he also designed:
Since the 1960s, German company RUF Automobile
GmbH, with headquarters in Pfaffenhausen,
Bavaria, has been looked on as a highly exclusive
finisher and improver of a longstanding icon on the
high-performance sports car scene – the Porsche
911. The rare RUF 911, of which only about 35 units
customised to individual customer requirements
are made by hand each year, are regarded by car
lovers, racing drivers and collectors as being a
coveted high-speed jewel, with waiting lists often
many years long. As the first automotive factory in
the Arab world, the new production and assembly
plant of RUF in Bahrain, whose slatted light protection
system on the façade looks not entirely coincidently
like the cooling ribs of an engine block from
certain angles, is intended to increase production
almost three-fold in the next few years – not least
due to the high purchasing power of the clientele
in the United Arab Emirates. Incorporated into the
architecture of the new and exclusive full-service
production, assembly and sales location occupying
32,300 square metres at the Sakhir Business
Park on the site of the Formula 1 race track is the
company’s own research and development department
as well as access to the neighbouring
race track. Ultimately, say the delighted developers
and operators, the ability to build sports cars
right alongside a prize-winning Formula 1 circuit is
a very special touch, while the 310 km/h Bahrain
circuit offers developers and customers a unique
opportunity to put the high-performance cars
through their paces under real racing conditions.
Italia, Germania, Austria, Turchia e Spagna. Vicino
personalizzatore e ottimizzatore altamente esclusivo
1 – auspicano costruttori e gestori – aggiunge
310 km/h, offre a sviluppatori e clienti l’occasione
Spaceport America, New Mexico / USA
Sir Norman Foster in puncto Flughäfen
neue Maßstäbe: Mit dem Terminal 3 des
Pekinger Flughafens errichtete sein Londoner Unternehmen
Foster + Partners das derzeit größte
Gebäude der Welt. Nun setzt Foster zu einem
neuen Weltrekord an. Diesmal nicht, was die
Größe betrifft, sondern die Flughöhe. Denn von
Fosters neuestem Flughafen fliegt man nicht etwa
zu einem anderen Flughafen auf Mutter Erde,
sondern mit dem Raumschiff ins All. Der derzeit
mitten in der Wüste von New Mexico entstehende
Spaceport America ist der erste kommerzielle
Weltraumflughafen dieses Planeten: bereits ab
2009 sollen von hier aus die ersten, exklusiven
privaten Weltraumreisen im vom französischen
Stardesigner Philippe Starck designten Space
ShipTwo starten.
Keine architektonische Extravaganz, sondern
eine dem extremen Wüstenklima und seinen
Temperaturschwankungen angepasste Bauweise,
die auf der Gewinnung von Passivenergie
für die Klimatisierung setzt, Strom durch Sonnenpaneele
gewinnt und auch das wertvolle Wasser
in einer hauseigenen Recycling-Anlage aufbereitet.
Neben Terminals und Passagierlounges
beherbergt der Spaceport auch Hangars für zwei
Trägerflugzeuge und fünf Raumschiffe sowie die
hauseigene Raumfahrerschule, die Passagiere für
den Weltraumausflug und die Schwerelosigkeit
entsprechend vorbereitet. Raumflug-Reservierungen
(gegen Anzahlung von 20.000 Dollar) ab
sofort unter virgingalactic.com.
E British architecture legend Sir Norman Foster
recently set new standards for airports: His
London-based company Foster + Partners built
the world’s largest building – Terminal 3 of Beijing
Airport. Now Foster is going for a new world
record. This time not in terms of size, but altitude.
People taking off from Foster’s newest airport
will not be flying to another airport on Mother
Earth, but on board a spaceship into outer space.
Spaceport America, which is currently being constructed
in the heart of the New Mexico desert, is
the first commercial space airport on the planet:
The first, exclusively private trips into space in
SpaceShipTwo, designed by top French designer
Philippe Starck, are scheduled to depart from
here in 2009. Initially only for VIP passengers, for
whom the first flights are reserved, and from 2010
for Joe Regular Astronaut, for a ticket price of
200,000 dollars. Behind the project, which comes
straight out of a science fiction fantasy, is none
other than Richard Branson, billionaire, adventurer,
balloon pilot and operator of airline Virgin
Atlantic, who has now discovered space tourism
as a new business field with his new sub-orbital
flight company, Virgin Galactic. Some time in late
2009 or early 2010, the first leisure astronauts
should lift off from Spaceport America on a flight
that first takes SpaceShipTwo on a carrier aircraft
to a height of 15 kilometres, from where it will
climb under rocket power to an altitude of 110
kilometres to float in sub-earth orbit (an astronaut
is officially anyone who reaches an altitude of 100
kilometres). After four minutes of weightlessness
in the spaceship cabin it is time to return to earth.
Just as spectacular as the flight is the Spaceport,
which has been designed by Foster + Partners
together with US design company URS Corp.
In complete contrast to the high-flying project,
the building’s organically floating concrete shell
disappears, apart from a wide panoramic window
façade with a view of the runway, almost subterraneously
beneath an earth rampart. This is not
architectural extravagance, but a building method
adapted to the extreme desert climate and its
temperature fluctuations, which focuses on the
extraction of passive energy for the air conditioning,
generates power through solar panels and
also treats precious water in its own recycling
plant. In addition to terminals and passenger
lounges, the Spaceport also houses hangars for
two carrier aircraft and five spaceships as well as
the company’s own astronaut school, which gives
passengers the preparation they need for the
excursion into space and weightlessness. Space
flight reservations (for a deposit of 20,000 dollars)
can be made now at virginatlantic.com.
I Recentemente l’architetto britannico Sir Norman
Starck.
dallo Spaceport America dovrebbero decollare i
Stadtneurotiker besonders angetan, deren
praktische Meriten ihm plötzlich während der
berüchtigten New Yorker Rushhour beim Versuch,
Doch gerade hier ortet Allen
Lichtgeschwindigkeit reisen, bremst Ihre Kommunikationsgeschwindigkeit
ein wenig. Und die
Tatsache, dass an beiden Enden der Datenleitung
diverse Server und Rechner für die Verarbeitung
ihrer Daten ein wenig Zeit benötigen,
verschafft den Empfängern ihrer Emails noch
einige weitere Millisekunden Atempause.
Das ändert allerdings kaum etwas daran, dass
wir im Zeitalter der Datenübertragung in Beinahe-Lichtgeschwindigkeit
bereits heftig an
der Schallmauer des Bewältigbaren kratzen.
Denn was die Dimension der Zeit angeht, so
ist die Informationstechnologie heute bereits
am Ende der Beschleunigung angekommen,
argumentieren weltweit die IT- und Kommunikationsexperten.
Schneller als per Licht durch ein
Glasfaserkabel lassen sich Daten nun einmal
nicht verschicken. Daraus, so stellen die Kommunikationssoziologen
fest, resultiert wiederum
eine fatale Erwartungshaltung: jeder möchte auf
seine Fragen sofort Antworten erhalten. Elektronische
Antwortzeiten dürfen heute üblicherweise
nur noch Minuten, maximal einige Stunden
dauern, eher der Dialogpartner die Geduld
verliert. Antworten, die wie in den guten alten
Zeiten auch mehrere Tage dauern können, werden
im Normalfall kaum noch akzeptiert. Allerdings,
so zeigen aktuelle Untersuchungen, trägt
der Lichtgeschwindigkeits-Kommunikation also
E “I am greatly relieved that the universe is
finally explainable with the assistance of modern
quantum physics,” writes Woody Allen in his
recently published tome of texts and essays
entitled Mere Anarchy, “I was beginning to think
it was me.” The speed of light was of particular
concern to the New York city neurotic, the practical
merits of which suddenly became so clear
to him during the notorious New York rush hour,
while trying to hail a taxi: “Please note that a
man in a spaceship approaching the speed of
light would appear to arrive at work on time,
relative to me – if not even a little early, and
certainly better dressed.” Another advantage
that Allen quite simply forgot to mention is that
anyone travelling to work at the speed of light
will not age – a phenomenon that physicists
have given the pretty name of ‘time dilatation’.
A space farer who spends 1000 years travelling
at the speed of light can therefore theoretically
bridge these 1000 years without ageing. It is
precisely on this point that Allen mentions the
decisive problem of travelling at the speed of
light: “If it one day becomes possible for me
to travel at more than 300,000 kilometres per
second and catch up with the light created
centuries ago, I could travel back to the time of
Ancient Egypt or the Roman Empire. But what
would I do there I would hardly know anybody.”
The fact is, at any rate, that travelling at the
speed of light has long been a reality, even
though not by spaceship or in the form of time
travel. You see, in a short while, the author of
this text will send it by email, in the hope that it
will shortly appear in print. This means that by
clicking on the “send” button, these letters that
have just been typed will be converted through
the wonder of electronics into photons, travel
at 300,000 kilometres per second along a fibreoptic
cable, which we use in their millions for
communication purposes nowadays, and arrive
at the recipient at almost the same moment they
were sent. You are therefore in the process of
reading a text that has covered a certain portion
of the distance to you at the speed of light.
The fact that this does not make any particular
impression on you is because you do the same
on a daily basis and communicate without a
second’s thought at something approaching
the speed of light. Only the fact that the data
cables in your network in all likelihood still include
some or other antiquated copper cable,
in which the electronics travel at only about 0.7
times the speed of light compared to photons,
slows down your communication speed slightly.
And the fact that various servers and computers
at either end of the data cable need a little time
to process your data gives the recipient of your
emails a few more milliseconds to catch their
breath.
However, this hardly changes anything about
the fact that we are already scraping heavily
against the sound barrier of what can be overcome
in the age of transferring data at almost
the speed of light. For when it comes to the
dimension of time, modern information technology
has already arrived at the end of the acceleration
phase, argue global IT and communication
experts. Data cannot be sent through a
fibre-optic cable faster than the speed of light.
This, according to communication sociologists,
in turn results in a fatal expectation: everyone
would like to receive immediate answers to
their questions. Electronic response times are
normally just minutes nowadays, and certainly a
maximum of a few hours, before the partner in
the dialogue loses patience. Answers that take
several days, as in the good old times, are normally
hardly ever accepted. However, current
research suggests that the rapid acceleration of
communication is currently contributing to a simultaneous
clear reduction in the quality of the
communication. People are increasingly tending
not to read the daily flood of messages and
texts that appear on their screen, but only to flit
over fragments of the first few lines and to return
a correspondingly fragmented answer – to
which a fragmented reply immediately follows.
The quicker we become, the more cursory we
become as well. And the more possibilities
present themselves to us through the acceleration
of our life and communication, the more
possibilities we also inevitably waste in the
age of light-speed communication. This is a
problem we are not alone with and with which
we similarly have to deal with at a higher level,
as Woody Allen has already determined: “The
speed of light could be a serious problem for
God. How, at a maximum top speed of only
300,000 kilometres per second, can he be everywhere
in the universe at the same time to prevent
all hell breaking out”
è possibile spiegare l’universo” scrive Woody
In particolare
po’ in anticipo e in ogni caso meglio vestito”.
tempo fino all’epoca degli antichi egiziani o dell’impero
romano.
luce. A propria volta questo dà adito, secondo
i sociologi della comunicazione, ad una fatale
aspettativa: tutti vogliono avere risposta immediata
alle proprie domande. Normalmente oggi i
come avveniva in passato. Peraltro, recenti ricerche
scoppi l’inferno ”
E
weltweit führenden Spezialisten in Sachen architektonischer Nachhaltigkeit
E The idea of environmental sustainability as being one of the principle
aspects of social corporate responsibility not only plays a main role in
global corporate culture nowadays, but also in the global architecture
scene. This is a fact that Arthur Gensel recognised at the beginning of
the 1970s, both as a personal matter and as a new segment with great
opportunities for the future. Back in 1972, Gensler, who had originally
founded his architecture office in San Francisco as a specialist in corporate
interior architecture, saw a special opportunity in an office project for
Californian power company Pacific Gas & Electric Company: In brief, he
asked whether the client of the project wanted to launch the project as a
prototype for an energy-efficient office concept. The client said yes – and
was amply rewarded for its courage just two years later, when the first
global oil crisis drove energy prices sharply upwards.
Today, more than three decades later, Gensler has not only grown to
become one of the world’s leading specialists in matters of architectural
sustainability, but also into one of the world’s largest international architecture
firms, with more than 3000 employees in 31 branches offices in
the USA, England, Japan, China, the United Arab Emirates and Costa
Rica. And today, the segments of Gensler comprise not only all classic
areas of architecture such as office, retail, aviation and transport, the
public sector and town planning, but also topics such as graphics, product
and brand design, which comprehensively rounds off the cross-disciplinary
portfolio of services.
Gensler took a decisive step towards expanding the company with the
order for a London City office for a longstanding client, US investment
bank Goldman Sachs: The first Gensler office to be founded outside of
the USA in London coincided with the project in 1988 and soon developed
into an important hub, not only for the British domestic market,
but also for Europe and the Middle East. Today, the London branch office,
with around 240 employees from 24 nations, looks after millions
of square metres of high-quality projects for premium customers in the
corporate, retail and public sectors, such as the European roll-out of
Apple Computers with the Europe’s first flagship store in London’s Regent
Street (now to be followed by a second in Covent Garden) or the
European headquarters of the legendary US design and office furniture
manufacturer Herman Miller, which has become the perfect case study
of modern, sustainable office architecture. The light-drenched, pavilion-style
office and showroom building has been awarded with notable
environmental accolades, such as the BREEAM Excellent Rating and the
LEED® Gold Rating and impressively underscores in three-dimensional
form the success of the path consistently followed by Gensler for over
three decades, which company founder Arthur Gensler summarised only
recently: “We have finally reached a turning point at which companies
now recognise that environmentally sustainable architecture does not
cost money, but saves money.“
puntasse sull’efficienza energetica.
31 filiali distribuite in USA, Inghilterra, Giappone, Cina, Emirati Arabi e
Costa Rica.
dell’architettura come uffici, negozi, aeronautica e trasporto, settore
senso dell’espansione aziendale.
E The perfect integration of audiovisual entertainment systems is constantly gaining in importance
in the demanding living sector. Not only the quality of the technology, but above all the harmonious
coordination of technology and interior design are decisive criteria in the search for a total experience
that is as comprehensive as it is impressive. The result are tailor-made, high-end solutions based on
the latest entertainment and control technologies, which Innsbruck-based company rogl livtec offers
under the all-embracing label of “Living Technology”. In line with this philosophy, the premises
of rogl livtec have also been designed as a harmonious entity of business, living and entertainment
environments. Thus the spatial concept of the showroom does not divide the space into shop, meeting
room, workshop or office area, but instead leads visitors and customers into an inviting as well
as spatially and atmospherically flexible space of experience, which is marked by simplicity, harmony
and a playful approach to dealing with complex technologies. The function of the showroom
as a versatile space is also underscored by the neutral, overall white colour concept, which allows a
wide range of staging possibilities both for the audiovisual solutions of rogl livtec as well as for corresponding
spatial, lighting and colour moods. A convincing ambience that is both formal and functional
enables the perfect “trying on” of the tailor-made entertainment solutions of rogl livtec through
the versatile interaction of sound, image, light, atmosphere and design in a wide range of variants.
l’integrazione armoniosa fra impianti tecnici e architettura.
E A modern pharmacy in a new local shopping centre on the edge of Graz presents itself in
a fresh and highly visible green. A colouring that not only exudes considerable friendliness and
draws attention, but was also selected by the architect from the beginning of the planning phase
and therefore also provided the all-embracing corporate design for this pharmacy business: The
powerful green colour of the façade also continues inside as an apple-green colour for walls,
furniture and glass, right through to the company’s visiting card. The friendliness of the colour is
the prominent element of an overall architectural concept that has been fully coordinated with the
desire of the client for a light and friendly sales and work atmosphere, which should offer lots of
light and usable sales space in an interior design that is as extraordinary as it is restrained. The
column-free floor space of more than 200m 2 offered the ideal fundamentals for a very open spatial
concept in which the internal functions of the business are fulfilled on the basis of the shortest
possible routes. Open room boxes give the overall space a large and light-drenched appearance,
while the generous, flowing room design is supported through organically suspended, perforated
ceiling elements and through sales desks that seem to grow out of the ceiling from above and
float above the floor. This is an effective and extravagant effect that is made possible through a
sophisticated substructure and reinforced by a concealed lighting system.
E When it comes to leather and shoe fashion, Derimod has been a Turkish institution for decades,
not only in Istanbul, but with around forty shops across the whole of Turkey. With a corporate philosophy
that combines top quality handicraft with the latest fashion trends, Derimod has changed over its
more than thirty years of history from a family business to a dynamically expanding fashion empire,
not only at home, but also with international outlets and export ties in Italy, France, Spain, Belgium,
Germany, England, Russia and the USA. For the latest Derimod shop in Istanbul, renowned Turkish
architect and interior designed Atilla Kuzu, whose Istanbul-based architecture company Zoom-Tpu
has made a name for itself not only with numerous retail concepts, but primarily also as a generalist
in the office and clinic segment and as a fashion designer, designed a shopping environment that
combines an attractive exterior with elegant minimalism in the interior. Organically curved, staggered
structures in the display windows give the shop a dynamic character, while also acting as a multi-level
product stage. Inside the shop, top quality minimalism determines the concept, not with geometrical
strictness, but with harmoniously rounded shapes and edges that continue the curve of the façade as
an architectural motif. A topic that also takes up the gently curved shapes of the ceiling, into which a
lighting system precisely tailored to the requirements of the fashion display has been integrated.
E Renowned European finance company Cortal Consors wanted to do anything but create a normal
banking outlet with its concept for Germany’s first direct banking branch. Instead, the Finance
Lounge opened at the beginning of May this year, with its inviting tall tables, bar stools and comfy
chairs, a counter and the latest internet terminals is more like a modern café-bar – a lounge even,
which gives a new face to a financial service provider which mainly operates in the online banking
business. On the one hand, customers should feel that they are not dealing with a traditional high
street bank with a bloated bureaucracy, but with a modern bank with slimline structures, cost-efficiently
and quickly. On the other hand, the new Finance Lounge should free the company from the
anonymity of the internet and lead to more personal contact in an open and relaxed environment
– even where former customers of classical branch-based banks are concerned. This all-round,
inviting concept is also embodied by the architecture: round, curved forms as well as dark floors
and light walls give the room a warm, harmonious atmosphere which is appropriately supported by
a multifunctional lighting concept. On the one hand, the round forms of the luminaires follow the design
language of the internal development; on the other, the lighting concept also takes account of
the different uses of the room and its zones which, for example, can be used as a single workplace
or as a conference room for several visitors.
dall’architettura: forme tondeggianti e curve, pavimenti scuri e pareti chiare donano all’ambiente
MOVING PERCEPTION
The work entitled “Rotor, 2005” marked the beginning of a three-year
experiment by Max Frey on the topic of light, movement and perception.
A twin-bladed rotor of about two metres in length is mounted to a framework
and fitted with coloured LEDs and mini fluorescent tubes. These lighting
elements are controlled by programme discs covered with etched markings
with a voltage passing through them. Each light source has its own sliding
contact. When it comes into contact with copper, it conducts the electricity
and the respective light illuminates. As the programme disc rotates further
and the sliding contact crosses an etched section, the circuit is broken and
the light goes out. In this way, the markings on the discs determine how the
light is programmed. The underlying technology is visible as part of the artistic
concept and gives an insight into the “design” of Max Frey’s complex and
impressive light play.
Having trained as a stone restorer, Max Frey, born in Graz in 1976, studied
visual media design at the University for Applied Art in Vienna, under the
tutelage of Brigitte Kowanz. Max Frey currently lives and works in Berlin.
E The extraordinary resort-project of Linsberg Asia set itself the demanding objective of bringing
Far Eastern worlds of wellness into the idyllic region of Bucklige Welt in southern Lower Austria. The
project was brought on stream through the discovery of a valuable thermal water vein, from which
the new significance of an old place near to nature is now fed. By harmoniously incorporating Asian
principles into a European environment, project developers and architects created a concept that
not only extensively marks the offering of the spa and hotel operation, but also congenially finds
its implementation in architecture and design. The consistent reduction to essentials, the focus on
high-quality materials, as well as a functional and creative concept that takes into consideration
the rules of Feng Shui, together produce an integrated system which offers an overall experience of
wellness and selfness that is as authentic as it is unique. The Asia Linsberg complex, which stands
in the middle of a large garden landscape that takes its inspiration from the Far Eastern theme, is
arranged into two mutually supplemental sub-areas: The spa, with a maximum daily capacity of
1200 visitors, and a 4-star hotel with about 240 beds and neighbouring restaurant. The reduced
use of colour and forms in the context of Far Eastern philosophies is continued consistently within
the properties. In the guest rooms as well, the all-embracing wellness topic of water represents the
focus of the space: The bathroom ensemble is integrated open-plan into the room.
scenari wellness tipici dell’estremo oriente.
La coerente riduzione all’essenziale,
wellness e selfness totale, tanto autentica quanto originale.
E The Watergate building, which was involuntarily shot to international fame by a political affair
in the 1970s, is not only one of the most exclusive addresses in Washington D.C., but also an outstanding
architectural monument to the classic US modern period. The organically curved façade
of the apartment and hotel complex situated right on the bank of the Potomac River and built at the
end of the 1960s by Luigi Moretti, inspired the architects of a luxury apartment renovation project
to adopt a congenial use of forms that reflects the exterior of the building in a reinterpretation of the
interior. Two identical apartments on the eleventh floor were completely gutted and combined into
a single, flowing space, which can be subdivided into smaller areas according to the individual requirements
of the occupier. Despite its openness, the kitchen and dining areas form their own spatial
volumes within the overall structure marked by organic shapes, whose curved sensuality is additionally
emphasised through the deliberate use of a pallet of differently structured, light-coloured
materials. For example, the walls were covered with fabric, which makes an attractive contrast to
the transparent room divider between the kitchen and dining areas. The relatively low ceiling heights
have also been visually balanced by the architect and light designers through restrained yet efficient
interventions: Curved ceiling light panels with integrated lighting solutions take up the curved motif
of the overall architecture of the building and apartment, thereby emphasising the flowing lightness
of the overall concept.
reinterpreta all’interno lo stile esterno dell’edificio.
E To mark the one hundredth anniversary of the company, traditional Austrian textile company
Huber has also made a symbolic architectural statement: in the town centre of Götzis, Huber and
Viennese team of architects smertnik kraut designed a new flagship store, which is anchored in the
most modern way possible in the present, while also making the century-old history of the company
something tangible. With this objective of making the flagship store a harmonious synthesis of a
traditional corporate past, innovative architecture and trendy fashion presentation, the architects
created an atmospheric reference site on a total of 900m 2 of usable floor space, which offers it visitors
an inviting, relaxed lounge atmosphere with a stylishly modern interior and harmonious worlds
of colour and light, all of which is underscored by the extensiveness of the sales environment as well
as through the extraordinary spaciousness of the fitting rooms. In developing the colour worlds, the
designers went for imposing colour accents – e.g. in yellow and pink – as well as for the imposing
use of the Huber corporate identity colours of red and white as a striking branding element. In addition,
the architects developed a 25-metre long catwalk gallery for the store, which was opened in
March of this year under the slogan “Shopping as an experience for the senses” at a festive anniversary
event. This feature functions both as a catwalk and also an exhibition space and thus visually
documents the hundred years of Huber history, allowing it to be experienced up close and personal.
E An uncompromising quality, customer and employee-orientated principle forms the basis for
success of Hamburg-based company Chemische Fabrik Dr. Weigert, one of the world’s forerunners
in the area of operational and technical medical hygiene initiatives. A corporate philosophy that the
architecture of the company’s new building in Hamburg was also intended to convey, both inwardly
as well as outwardly. The 2,000 m 2 of usable floor space in the new build therefore presents itself as
an open, excitingly designed environment that adapts to the demands of creativity and motivation
through sophisticated spatial design. Apart from the carefully coordinated, harmonious architectural
concept, it is above all the building technology, with its individually controllable components
of indoor climate, illumination and acoustics, which makes the building a work environment of extraordinarily
high quality for the office users. The accentuating integration of light plays a particular
role in this: a bright atrium, glazed over all four storeys, with a 14m-high waterfall as any eye-catcher
and climate regulator also unfolds its special aesthetics as a gallery for large-scale graffiti art. Light
is primarily used as a supporting element on the internal surfaces and in the office spaces, and emphasises
the effect of contours, lines and surfaces. Almost all the luminaires are flush-mounted to
avoid interrupting the open view of the space, as part of an overall design concept that prefers effect
over objectuality – inwardly and outwardly alike.
grandi dimensioni.
E The German Embassy in Madrid presents itself as a jewel of a building and valuable international
visiting card of modern German architecture. Built by renowned German avant-garde architect
Alexander Freiherr von Branca in the mid-1960s, the architectural concept of the two listed chancellery
and residence buildings is partly based on the classic design principles of the Bauhaus movement:
clear contours, clear contrasts, being consistently faithful in the use of materials. The architects
were therefore presented with a correspondingly complex challenge in the form of the general
restoration of the chancellery building, while observing its listed status, which was done with the
overriding goal of keeping the appearance of the inside and outside of the building intact. The general
restoration became necessary due to the complete replacement of the ageing building services
as well as the fire protection and security facilities. Despite the necessary structural interventions
– such as the redefinition of the entrance, the conversion of an existing stairwell into an escape
stairwell, the insertion of smoke locks, the acquisition of new office spaces by developing the former
living areas on the third floor, the complete renovation of the interior and the complete restoration of
the roof and façade – the extraordinary character of the building remained unchanged. New detailed
solutions were also optimally integrated in preserving the overall character, such as the modern
lighting solutions integrated into the suspended ceilings during development of the interior, whose
functionally simple design perfectly matches the classically modern overall architectural concept of
the building.
sia all’interno che all’esterno.
l’impostazione architettonica generale dell’edificio d’impronta classica moderna.
completed our special vision of a concept store.”
continue e innovazioni tecnologiche costanti.
aziendale in precedenza adibito a magazzino.
soluzioni illuminotecniche architettoniche.
D In Israel zählt Kashtan Group landesweit zu
den größten Handelsunternehmen für Licht- und
Elektrotechnik.
internationaler Hersteller basiert. In diesem
Zusammenhang spielte nicht zuletzt auch die
neue Partnerschaft von Kashtan Group mit
XAL eine wesentliche Rolle: die Produkte von
XAL erweiterten das Showroomkonzept um die
Präsentation hochwertiger architektonischer
Lichtlösungen „als perfekter Partner, der unser
Angebot an Schalt-, Steuerungs- und Heimautomatisierungstechnologien
ideal mit dem dritten
Bereich Licht abrundet“, wie Ofer Kashtan erklärt:
„XAL war hier gewissermaßen die Kirsche
auf unserer Torte – das fehlende Glied, das
unsere besondere Vision eines Concept Store
perfekt vervollständigte.“
E The Kashtan Group is one of the largest
trading companies for lighting and electrical
technology in Israel. The family business,
founded in Tel Aviv in 1932, is now in the hands
of its third generation and can look back over a
long history of success and expansion based on
constant challenges and ongoing technological
innovations.
The company is now also underscoring its ability
to constantly adapt to current circumstances
and the latest trends with the creation of an
extraordinary concept store in a former storage
building in Tel Aviv. A redefinition of the conventional
showroom concept, which enables the
company to ideally present its three core competencies
on 150m 2 and two floors: High-end
switching and control technologies, home automation
and architectural lighting solutions.
“The idea behind the new concept star was
to present our visitors with different products
within the framework of a common concept,”
says Ofer Kashtan, managing director of the
company. “The common denominator of these
products is also the primary interest of our
target group: Technology and design. The challenge
was to offer as many topics and impressions
as possible on a relatively small surface
area, without overwhelming the visitor. We
wanted to create a space that showed as many
of our different competencies as possible, rather
than emphasising just a few of them. We wanted
to generate the same feeling in our visitors that
they had, for example, when entering a sophisticated,
loft-style home – on the one hand with
an interior or living area, on the other with an
outdoor area. As in an apartment or house, we
have designed the interior so that we can hold
several discussions with customers simultaneously
in different areas. Our showroom therefore
includes a living room, a kitchen and even a
small discussion and presentation room for conferences,
seminars, etc.”
At the same time, the room had to clearly convey
the consistent quality philosophy of the Kashtan
Group, which is based exclusively on the products
of leading international manufacturers. In
this context, the new partnership between the
Kashtan Group and XAL also plays an important
role: the products of XAL augment the showroom
concept with the presentation of high-quality
Kashtan, amministratore dell’azienda. “Il comune
denominatore di questi prodotti rappresenta allo
stesso tempo l’interesse principale del nostro
gruppo target: tecnologia e design. La sfida da
risolvere era quella di offrire in uno spazio relativamente
piccolo quanti più temi e impressioni
possibili senza però sovraffaticare i visitatori. Volevamo
interna in modo tale che in qualsiasi momento
potessimo tenere contemporaneamente colloqui
internazionali.
XAL Ltd.
LONDON / UNITED KINGDOM
D „London ist ganz klar die Champions
League des internationalen Lichtdesigns“, sagt
Florian Schaubach. Damit bringt Schaubach,
seit Anfang Februar dieses Jahres Sales Director
von XAL UK in London, die Herausforderungen,
denen sich die neue XAL-Niederlassung
gegenübersieht, unmissverständlich auf den
Punkt: „Selbst in jenen Bereichen, in denen
Umfeld, das uns sehr wertvolle Know-How Impulse
Lichtdesign-Branchenmessen in
Großbritannien, die Schaubachs bereits zuvor
sorgfältig aufgebautes Netzwerk an UK-Branchenkontakten
und die Bekanntheit von XAL
optimal erweiterte – „meine Umzugskartons
Messe-Equipment“, lacht Schaubach heute
New York bestens bewährt. Allerdings muss
die Chemie wirklich stimmen, damit wir für
beide Seiten optimale Synergieeffekte erzielen
können – und für die Umsetzung dieses besonderen
Qualitätsanspruchs nehmen wir uns
entsprechend Zeit.“
E “London is quite clearly in the Champions
League of international lighting design,” says
Florian Schaubach. In this way, Schaubach,
who has been Sales Director of XAL UK since
February of this year, unequivocally summarises
the challenges facing the new XAL branch
office: “Even in areas where we are already doing
very well, the extremely competitive British
market is showing us how we can become even
better. There’s one thing we should remember:
London is not only the gateway to the domestic
market, but also the gateway to the absolute
pinnacle of the international design and architecture
scene. Almost all of the world’s leading
architecture companies are concentrated here
in one place; Norman Foster or Richard Rogers,
to name but two. Surviving in this environment
is naturally very challenging, but at the same
time it is also an extremely exciting and positive
learning process. Essentially, we’ve landed
on our feet here with our special, highly flexible
ability to facilitate lighting solutions in perfect
harmony with architecture. Nevertheless, this
is an uncommonly dynamic environment, which
gives us highly valuable impulses for the future
in terms of expertise. Ultimately, we have the
opportunity here to talk about our products and
ideas with the very best of the lighting design
industry.”
Given this international dimension of the new
London location of XAL, the decision to make
the move westwards at the beginning of this
year and to manage XAL UK in the start-up
phase, was not a difficult one for Schaubach,
who had previously driven the development of
Eastern European markets at XAL with great
success. Right at the beginning, XAL took part
successfully in the ARC Show 08, one of the
most important international light design industry
fairs in the United Kingdom, which ideally
expanded Schaubach’s previously carefully
developed network of UK industry contacts and
the awareness of XAL – “my moving boxes travelled
in the same truck as my trade fair equipment,”
laughs Schaubach today about his highspeed
relocation. However, he does not want
the search for a possible London showroom for
XAL to go quite so fast, with a probably opening
date set for 2009/2010: “Our strategy to
operate showrooms together with partners from
the design and furnishing industry has proven
effective in other cities such as New York. Of
course, the chemistry really has to work, so that
both parties are able to achieve optimal synergies
– and we are taking all the time we need to
implement this very special claim to quality.”
I “Londra è chiaramente la Champions League
del design illuminotecnico internazionale”.
Con queste parole, Florian Schaubach, dall’inizio
di febbraio di quest’anno Sales Director di
XAL UK a Londra, delinea inequivocabilmente
filiale XAL: “Il mercato britannico, estremamente
competitivo, ci indica come possiamo migliorare
Riuscire a farsi
strada in questo contesto richiede naturalmente
un grande impegno, nel contempo però implica
anche un processo di crescita estremamente
stimolante e positivo. La prerogativa di estrema
flessibilità, che ci contraddistingue e che ci
consente di fornire soluzioni illuminotecniche
in perfetta sintonia con l’architettura, ci mette
in ottima luce.
del know-how.
subito con successo all’ARC Show 08,
illuminotecnico internazionale in Gran Bretagna.
dato ottimi risultati in altre città come New
York.
bzw. Abmessungen erhältlich.
E The suspended profile luminaire MIRAGE,
part of a new generation of luminaries from
XAL, is slimline and geometrically simple. The
common feature of the new XAL luminaires,
which are available in integrated, surfacemounted
and suspended variants, is the highly
efficient, energy-saving LED technology with
a completely innovative microprism cover that
enables a wealth of effective lighting effects. The
microprisms integrated into the material of the
luminaire cover produce various light-scattering
effects for the LED tracks hidden beneath them
in order to generate an extraordinary lighting
which appears in various forms, from curved
lines to circles, depending on the viewing angle.
Not only is the design of MIRAGE simple and elegant
– so is the installation: The luminaire cover
on the suspended variant can be installed at the
flick of a wrist, thanks to the snap-in mechanism.
The end caps of the suspended variant are
currently available in aluminium, with a carbon
finish planned for the future. The integrated and
surface-mounted variants are available round
and rectangular in various diameters and sizes.
I Sottile e geometricamente essenziale,
diametri e dimensioni differenti.
RETRO MOTORBIKE HELMET
by Jerome Coste / Atelier Ruby (FR)
www.ateliersruby.com
E His collection is dedicated to “everyday heroes and heroines”, says Parisian designer Jerome
Coste, who is pursuing the ambitious yet passionate goal of creating the most beautiful motorbike
crash helmets in the world with his small, exclusive label Atelier Ruby. Above all passionate, because
Coste rejects everything anonymous, modern and mass-produced and is a declared fan of the
golden, classical era of motor sports: The 1950s and 1960s, when racing cars did not yet look like
high-speed, advertisement-plastered billboards and in which racing drivers were not coolly calculating,
but hard men who still lit their cigarettes in the pit lane before they removed their helmets. It was
precisely such helmets, as worn by true heroes like Steve McQueen in films like Le Mans, which Jerome
Coste, himself a keen motorbike rider, wanted to produce in a limited edition – and his vision has
now become a highly exclusive reality with his Pavillon collection: Under the sophisticated paintwork
hide refined full-carbon shells, while only the very finest nappa calf’s leather is good enough for the
interior lining. And as Jerome Coste is not only a design perfectionist, but also a speed dandy, each
helmet has the perfect style accessory: A silk scarf in a perfectly matching colour.
www.ateliersruby.com
Proprio questi caschi,
come quelli indossati da veri eroi come Steve McQueen nel film Le Mans, voleva produrre in piccola
serie Jerome Coste, egli stesso motociclista sfegatato.
MONOFIN FLIPPER
by Ted Ciamillo / Lunocet (USA)
Damit erkauft man
E One of the fastest swimmers in the sea was used as the model for an unusual flipper, which
is intended to turn unpractised everyday swimmers into world record breakers. In designing his
Lunocet Monofin, designer Ted Ciamillo studied the swimming technique of dolphins for seven
years and adapted their highly-efficient finning concept to suit homo sapiens. The material for the
Monofin, which should also enable record-breaking long-distance performances, is based on extremely
light materials such as glass fibre plastic. The result: The fin, weighing approx. 1 kg, is as
good as weightless in water, thanks to the lift effect. In order to produce as much propulsion as possible
during upwards and downwards movements, the wings are connected to each other in such
a way that they fold into the perfect position depending on the movement in order to displace the
largest possible volume of water. However, the metamorphosis into a human dolphin has its price:
Depending on the material used, the Monofin costs between about 1250 and 1800 dollars. For this,
of course, one is buying the reassuring certainty of being able swim at a speed of about 13 km/h (8
mph), more than twice as fast as the current Olympic champions, who without a Monofin achieve no
more than about 5 km/h (3 mph). www.lunocet.com
E “Your item may exhibit slight scratches or discolourations. This is no cause for concern. This
can happen when a large piece of material is used to break the freefall of a 7.7 tonne metal capsule.”
This accompanying letter, together with a certificate of authenticity, is enclosed with each
item from the Soyuz collection of Canadian designer Jean-Luc Marcoux. A few years ago, Marcoux
bumped into an acquaintance in Russia, who happened to know one of the two cosmonauts who
had orbited the earth in the Mir Space Station for almost six months in 1990. Just as coincidentally,
one of these astronauts had kept a personal souvenir from the Soyuz capsule - the braking parachute
with which the two space travellers landed safely again on planet Earth. From space souvenir
to flash of inspiration was no great distance – and Marcoux, whose pocket factory Everquest specialises
in recycling materials, designed a small and extraordinary collection from the space relic:
Each piece of the “Soyuz TM-8 Space Mission” series is made from an individually cut piece of the
orange and white Soyuz braking parachute. Currently available: Two waterproof laptop-cum-messenger
bags in sizes M and L, as well as a carry-case for an iPod or mobile phone.
