me of the medina, the traditional Arab
“Certain
city, with their blinding whites and
their gleaming turquoise contrasts. I was born
in Medenine, not far from the island of Djerba, a
crossroads for the caravans and their merchants
since antiquity, now full of souvenir shops for
the tourists set up inside our distinctive ghorfas
- former granaries that were fortified. And
marvellously cool inside, even in the summer.”
With her luxurious mane of curly hair as
free-spirited as the lady herself, Afef Jnifen,
Tunisian-born but an Italian citizen since
1992, model, TV host, and lately the new face
of L’Oréal, has been a Capri regular for many
years, but stresses that she has “never stayed
on the island for more than four days in a
row.” Here today and gone tomorrow, then,
little more than a daytripper? Hardly. For a
queen of the jet set like Afef - in her regulation
jeans, white shirt, and black flats by day, and
sumptuous designer creations on the red
carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, say, by
night - the island that belonged to Tiberius is
only one of many destinations ideally suited
to serve as a romantic getaway, a birthday
party venue (and her friends have names
like Montezemolo, Della Valle, Abete,
