1980. Sadamoto frequenta un
istituto superiore di una cittadina.
Il severo insegnante
Kobayashi ha appeso in classe
un “indice dell'umanità” diviso
in “delinquenti”, “rifiuti” e “persone”.
Un giorno Kobayashi
scopre che Sadamoto e i suoi
amici hanno rubato in un negozio
per il puro gusto di farlo. Gli
alunni devono scrivere un tema
“autocritico”; Sadamoto consegna
il suo intitolandolo “Io sono
una cipolla”, e all'insegnante
sembra di intravedere un primo
segno di umanità. Da qui parte
una situazione confusa nella
quale diventa sempre più difficile,
anche per gli alunni, distinguere
tra verità e menzogne, tra
autocritiche giustificate e meri
atti di opportunismo.
Mabudachi, secondo film del
giapponese Furuyama
Tomoyuki, è un buon film sull’adolescenza
e ha ricevuto
uno dei tre premi del concorso.
Ambientazione rurale. Tre
ragazzini formano una banda affiatata e cercano di opporsi a
una scuola in cui un professore tirannico li sottopone a vere
e proprie torture fisiche e psicologiche. […] I tre si inventano
prove per sopportare il dolore, come strigere una puntina in
mano durante l’interrogazione e come passare il fiume camminando
sulla spalletta del ponte. Ma le umiliazioni continuano
e uno dei tre si lascia cadere dal ponte. Nessuno lo troverà
più. Film lucido e senza concessioni; il percorso tra l’incomprensione
e la ribellione, l’umiliazione e il senso di colpa
è raccontato in maniera forte e sentita. Un regista da tenere

1980. Sadamoto is at a secondary
school in a small town. The
strict teacher Kobayashi has
hung up a “humanity index” in
the classroom, divided into the
categories “delinquents”,
“scum” and “people”. One day
Kobayashi finds out that
Sadamoto and his friends have
stolen some things from a shop
for fun. The children have to
write a self-critical essay;
Sadamoto writes a piece entitled
“I am an onion”, in which the
teacher thinks he can detect a
first sign of humanity. This is
the start of a confusing situation
in which it gets hard to distinguish
lies, truth, justified selfcriticism
and opportunist wheeler
dealing, even for the boys.
Mabudachi, the second film by
Japanese filmmaker Furuyama
Tomoyuki, is a good film about
adolescence, which received one
of the competition prizes. The
setting is rural. Three boys
form a tight-knit group and try
to stand up to a school at which a tyrannical professor subjects
them to actual and real physical and psychological torture.
[...] The three invent trials to withstand the pain, like
squeezing a needle in their hand during the interrogation; and
to defy risk, like passing over a river walking along the parapet
of a bridge. But the humiliations continue and one of them
throws himself off the bridge, never to be found again. A lucid
film that makes no concessions, a journey between incomprehension
and rebellion, humiliation and feelings of guilt, told
in a strong and sincere fashion. A director worth keeping an
