“Il Kimchi è un piatto coreano
tradizionale. È una specie di
giardiniera. In tutti i ristoranti
coreani vengono servite a ogni
pasto diverse varietà di Kimchi.
[…] Sono entrato all’Accademia
cinematografica giapponese e
ho cominciato a dire a tutti che
ero coreano. In quell’ambiente
si trattava di un argomento
interessante, e rendeva interessante
anche me. Una condizione
decisamente conveniente. Il
fatto che lo dicessi a tutti
dev’essere stato anche una
forma di reazione, dopo che per
tanto tempo non lo avevo mai
accennato a nessuno. Mi sono
diplomato nel settore del documentario
cinematografico. Era
giunto il momento di presentare
un progetto per la tesi. Ho
scelto come soggetto ‘i coreani
in Giappone’, un tema che
avevo ignorato per tutta la mia
vita. Era il momento ideale per
farlo. O allora, o mai più. Avrei
guardato a me stesso come a un ‘coreano in Giappone’, e se mi
fossi piaciuto, bene così. Altrimenti, pazienza. Un coreano
benestante in Giappone, che odia il Kimchi e non ha alcun
senso di integrità razziale. Come soggetto per un documentario,
non avrebbe potuto essere migliore. […] Recentemente ho
imparato che il termine ‘Annyon haseyo’ può voler dire tanto
‘buongiorno’ quanto ‘addio’. Ho scelto il titolo ‘Annyon
Kimchi’ per il significato ironico che getta sulla mia stessa esistenza.
Mi domando come andrà a finire… se sarà
‘Buongiorno, Corea’ o ‘Addio, Corea’. La risposta la troverò
man mano che la mia vita andrà avanti. E spero che sarà valida.”

“Kimchi is a traditional
Korean food. It’s a kind of pickles.
There are a few varieties of
Kimchi served at every meal in
every Korean home. [...] I
entered the Japan Academy of
Moving images, and I started
to tell people that I was Korean.
At that school, it was an interesting
subject, and made me
seem interesting. Kind of a
convenient status. Also that
must have been a reaction after
not telling anybody for so long.
I majored in documentary filmmaking.
It was time to make a
thesis project. I chose the subject
of ‘Koreans in Japan’ that I
had avoided all my life. It was
the perfext time to do it. It was
then or never. I would face
myself as a ‘Korean in Japan’
anf if I liked myself, that would
be good. If I didn’t, that would
be that. An easygoing Korean
in Japan who hates Kimchi
with no hint of racial integrity.
As a subject of documentary, it couldn’t be better. [...]
Recently I have learnt thet ‘Annyon haseyo’ means both hello
and good bye. I chose the title ‘Annyon Kimchi’ for the irony
it implies to my own existence. I wonder which way it will
turn eventually... ‘Hello, Korea’, or ‘Good bye, Korea’. The
answer will be found as my life goes on. Hope it’s a good

BIOGRAPHY
Matsue Tetsuaki (Tokyo, 1977) entered the Japan Academy of
Moving Images in 1996. Annyon-Kimchi is his graduate student
film.
