Ichio è un trentacinquenne
di buon
cuore, single, che
gestisce con l’eccentrico
padre un piccolo
ristoro sul margine
della strada chiamato
“Buco nel cielo”.
Qualche volta passano
pochi camionisti o
viaggiatori. Ichio sta
tutti i giorni dietro i
fornelli senza particolare
piacere. Si sente
solo. Un giorno, arriva
al ristorante una ragazza.
Quando cerca di andarsene
senza pagare, Ichio la ferma.
Viene fuori che la ragazza è
stata abbandonata dall’amante.
Ichio le offre alloggio e
lavoro. La loro vita insieme
sembra durare per sempre,
ma forse Ichio è un po’ troppo
romantico.
“Non mi è mai venuto in
mente di applicare al mio film
il concetto o la categoria di
‘terapia’.
Ichio is a good-hearted,
single man aged 35
who runs a small roadside
diner called “Hole
in Heaven” with his
eccentric father.
Sometimes a few
truckers or travellers
pass. Ichio stands
behind the stove everyday
without much
pleasure. He feels lonely.
One day, a girl
walks into the restaurant.
She tries to leave
again without paying, but
Ichio stops her. It turns out
that the girl has been deserted
by her lover. Ichio offers her
accommodation and a job in
the restaurant. Their life
together seems to last forever,
but maybe Ichio is just a little
too romantic.
“The concept of ‘therapy’
never really occurred to me,
but the story I wanted to tell
was of a man who had shut
himself off from the past, who is able to move forward only
by fully acknowledging his painful past. If that’s what you
call tharapy, then I guess I’ve made a therapeutic film.
When we meet the central character, Ichio, he’s cloaked
himself in a veneer of cynicism, having convinced himself
that being stuck cooking in his father’s roadside restaurant
is an acceptable life. But when he meets Taeko, his feelings
for her make him desperate for the first time in his life. As
he looks after Taeko, he winds up unpacking the clothes his
mother left behind years ago. Ichio had always dealt with
his mother’s departure by blaming it on his ornery, useless
father. But through his involvement with Taeko, he comes
to the painful acknowledgement that his mother had abandoned
him just as much as his father.” (Linda Hoaglund,
interview with Kumakiri Kazuyoshi, Berlin’s Forum 2001
catalogue)
