PATTIYUDE DIVASAM

Una volta in una vivace provincia
rurale il Signore reggente
garantiva la democrazia ai
suoi fedeli sudditi, e loro
festeggiavano con canzoni
gioiose. Come segno del suo
grande cuore, il Signore diede
il cane reale Apu a Koran, già
suo servo obbediente. Koran e
la moglie orgogliosamente si
prendevano cura del piccolo
cane, ammirati da tutto il villaggio.
Un giorno, Apu morde
un’anatra, e quindi un ragazzo.
Si sparsero voci che il
Signore avesse mandato il
cane tra la gente sapendo che
era rabbioso. La pacifica,
democratica atmosfera del villaggio
era distrutta. Il nuovo
leader e gli scoraggiati abitanti
del villaggio si volsero contro
il Signore che una volta
amavano e rispettavano.
“Pattiyude divasam è stato girato
nello stato più meridionale
dell’India, nel piccolo villaggio
di Monconbu, nella provincia
centrale di Kuttanadu. Manconbu è un villaggio sperduto, il
che ha reso le riprese più difficili. Non c’erano alberghi.
Dovevamo cercare case vuote per alloggiare la troupe con i
servizi basilari. L’acqua non era il massimo! Ma l’aspetto interessante
è che la regione è famosa per le sue coltivazioni di
riso. La cultura tradizionale è intatta. Questo rende le pose e i
volti molto particolari, aspetti che stanno rapidamente scomparendo
dall’India contemporanea, anche nel Kerala. Ho
molto apprezzato l’ospitalità e il calore dei locali. Tutti gli attori
nel film sono non professionisti. Vengono praticamente tutti
dal villaggio di Monconbu.” (Murali Nair)
BIOGRAFIA
Murali Nair (Anandapuram, Kerala, 1966), diplomato in
Geologia, ha fatto i suoi studi cinematografici all’Istituto
Xavier di Bombay. Ha lavorato come aiuto regista.

Once in a colorful rural
province, the ruling Lord granted
democracy to his faithful citizens.
They celebrated with joyous
song. As a token of his good
will, the Lord gave the royal dog
Apu to his former obedient servant,
Koran. Koran and his wife
proudly cared for the small dog,
admired by all the village. One
day, Apu bit a duck, then later a
boy. Rumor spread that the Lord
knowingly sent Apu amongst
the people because the dog had
rabies. The peaceful democratic
atmosphere of the village was
disrupted. The new leader and
the disheartened villagers turned
against the Lord they once loved
and respected.
“Pattiyude divasam was shot
in the small, southernmost state
of India, in the small village of
Monconbu, in the central
province of Kuttanadu.
Manconbu is a remote village,
which certainly made the filming
more difficult. There were
no hotels. We had to look for empty houses to lodge crew with
basic facilities. The water wasn’t great! But the interesting
aspect is that the region is very well known for its rice paddy
cultivation. Traditional culture is very intact. This makes for
a very different attitude and especially faces, aspects which
are quickly disappearing from contemporary India, even in
Kerala. I really appreciated the hospitality and warmth of the
locals. All the performers in Pattiyude divasam are nonprofessionals.
They’re practically all from the village of
Monconbu.” (Murali Nair)
BIOGRAPHY
Murali Nair (Anandapuram, Kerala, 1966) graduated in
Geology. He studied film at Xavier Institute in Bombay. He has
worked as an assistant director.
