Non dimenticherò mai la mia prima
corsa sul sellino posteriore di uno scooter.
Avevo cinque anni. Mio padre mi
aveva smarrito nell'immenso Parco
nazionale di Lione mentre io ero tutto
intento a fare a ripetizione la ruota. Solo,
circondato da centinaia di persone
intente nella loro passeggiata domenicale,
mentre la Polizia francese mi stava
cercando, decisi di fare l’autostop nella
strada che passava accanto al parco. Uno
sconosciuto saltò giù dal suo
scooter e cominciò a farmi
delle domande. Cosa facevo
lì da solo? Perché stavo piangendo?
Dove abitavo? Di lì a
poco volavamo già per le
strade di Lione. Poiché portava
il casco, non avrei saputo
dire chi fosse quest’adulto
che mi stava accompagnando.
Non ci furono presentazioni
e quando ci salutammo,
davanti alla porta di
casa mia, mi strinse e si assicurò
che ricordassi per sempre che lui, il mio salvatore di

can have their own doubts. I will never forget
my first ride on the back seat of a scooter. I
was five. My father had lost me in Lyon’s
immense national park while I was performing
cartwheels. Alone, surrounded by hundreds
of Sunday-afternoon strollers, while
the French National Police were looking for
me. I finally decided to hitchhike on the nearby
road. A stranger jumped off his scooter
and started questioning me. What was I
doing here on my own? Why was I crying?
Where was my home? We were soon flying
along the streets of Lyon. Under the helmet, I
couldn’t tell who this adult was.
There were no introductions and
when we said goodbye, at the
front door, he held me and made
sure that I would always
remember that he, who saved me

Sorbonne in Paris. He works for
New York Times Television and Film, where he handles the
production and sale of documentaries.
