He and the factory supervisor are immediately drawn to one another, while another, older worker, who is also attracted to him, tells the young man to watch out because the supervisor is not the right man for him. The factory becomes a place of unproductive pleasure, of non-work vindicated by the best minds, of encounters and seductions, of a masculine identity that discovers uncertainties and new motivations. The workers come to life during breaks, lunch, at the end of the day, in the shower, at the promise of a drink at the bar. This is how Guiraudie dismantles globalisation and production-oriented alienation, political control and labour. He changes the “real” representational meaning of the factory as a place of sublime massacre (like the Lars von Trier of Dancer in the Dark) into a place of individual pleasure, of the single person living within the collective.
