Mathias, figlio di una
francese, parte per la
Guinea alla ricerca del
padre naturale. Appena
arrivato è aggredito e
derubato di tutti gli
effetti personali e dei
documenti. In un bar
incontra John Tra, un
giovane e simpatico
vagabondo che lo presenta
a sua sorella
Rama. Quest’ultima lo
accompagna a Fria, una
città industriale in declino
in cui a quanto pare
abita il padre, visto che in passato
lavorava in una fabbrica
del luogo. Rama mette in
guardia il giovane francese.
La sera incontra nuovamente
John in un bar gestito da un
uomo di nome Sylla. Mathias
non si rende conto che sono
stati gli uomini di Sylla a
derubarlo il giorno del suo
arrivo. Alla fine incontra il
padre, ormai vecchio, alcolista
e indifferente a tutto.
Mathias decide di tornare a
Parigi. Ma…
“Si incontrano parecchie persone in I.T.: uno è un francese
originario della Guinea, gli altri guineani. Trascorrono
insieme parecchio tempo. E si somigliano. Vivono in un
ambiente in cui persino il desiderio di mostrare un po’ di
calore umano provoca un dolore atroce, vista l’insensatezza
delle loro esistenze. Chiunque si rifiuti di prendere in
considerazione il futuro, come fanno loro, e viva unicamente
per il presente, deve avere un passato spettrale. Il
protagonista principale si smarrisce alla ricerca dei suoi
parenti. Grazie a un conoscente e all’aiuto delle persone
che lo sostengono nella sua ricerca, avrà un futuro. I.T. è un
film con attori che somigliano ai personaggi. O è il contrario?
Il film mostra una serie di brevi squarci impressionistici
della vita guineana: è molto realistico, tragico, triste,
eppure scintillante, proprio come i suoi personaggi. È il
ritratto di una generazione in Africa, giovani che sanno di

Mathias, the son of a
Frenchwoman, travels to
Guinea to find his natural
father. No sooner does
he get there than he is
mugged and robbed of all
his personal belongings
and documents. In a bar
he meets John Tra, a
young and likeable tramp
who introduces him to his
sister Rama. Rama takes
Mathias to Fria, a rundown
industrial town in
which his father is apparently
staying because he
used to work in a local factory.
Rama warns the young
Frenchman about it. In the
evening he again meets John in
a bar run by a man called Sylla.
Mathias doesn’t realise that it
was Sylla’s men who robbed
him on the day he arrived. He
finally meets his father, who is
now an old man, wasted, alcoholic
and uninterested in anything.
Mathias decides to return
to Paris. But...
“Several people come together
in I.T. One is a Frenchman of Guinean origin, the others
Guineans. They spend a lot of time together, and they are
similar. They live in an environment in which even the will
to show human kindness causes excruciating pain in view
of the senselessness of their lives. Anyone who refuses to
consider the future, as they do, and lives solely for the present
must have had a ghostly past. The main protagonist
loses his way on the search for his blood relatives. Thanks to
an acquaintance and the help of the people who support him
in his search, he has a future. I.T. is a film featuring actors
who are similar to the characters they play. Or is it the
other way around? The film shows a series of short impressions
of Guinean life. It is a very down-to-earth film, tragic,
sad, yet shimmering, just like the characters themselves.
It is the portrait of a generation in Africa, young people
who know they are lost and who live for today. They are
