Deniz ha ventun anni. Vive a Berlino e lavora come doppiatrice,
ma vuole diventare un’attrice. Ha difficoltà a trovare
qualcuno che soddisfi le sue aspettative. Non è felice
con il suo ragazzo, Jan. Una mattina d’estate deve
prendere una decisione. Incontra Jan in un caffè, vanno a
fare una passeggiata e rompe con lui. Completamente
disturbata, Deniz vaga per la Berlino estiva. Dopo un test
vocale per un ruolo in un film, incontra Diego in una stazione
della metropolitana. Passano la serata inseme, ma
Deniz sa che il loro incontro non avrà alcun seguito. La
mattina dopo si separano.
Deniz is twenty-one years old. She lives in Berlin and works
as a film dubber, but she wants to become an actress. She has
difficulty finding someone who satisfies her expectations. She
isn’t happy with her boyfriend, Jan. One summer’s morning
she must make a decision. She meets Jan in a café, they go for
a walk and she breaks up with him. Completely disturbed,
Deniz hurries through summertime Berlin. After a voice test
for a role in a film, she encounters Diego in an underground
station. They spend the evening together, but Deniz knows this
encounter won’t be of any consequence. Early the next morning
they part again.
Pochissimi film berlinesi si preoccupano della topografia,
che o resta irriconoscibile o è tagliuzzata in sfondi pittoreschi.
In realtà, come ci
muoviamo nella città? Che
cosa succede lungo la strada?
L’essenza del film di
Thomas Arslan risiede negli
incontri e nelle conversazioni,
come pure nelle pause fra
essi, nel silenzio e nel movimento
fra un luogo e un
altro. Deniz esce dall’appartamento
del suo ragazzo a
Kreuzberg. La casa ha una
scala stretta e gabinetti in
comune, pesanti porte di
legno tipiche degli edifici
vecchio stile, e ingressi bui.
Una luce accecante filtra dai
cancelli mezzo aperti sulla
città estiva. Berlino d’estate
non è solo la descrizione di
una stagione dell’anno. È
anche un luogo diverso dalla Berlino invernale. Gli edifici
dell’International Building Exhibition sulla
Kochstrasse, dove abita Deniz, sfoggiano i loro colori irritanti,
inusualmente accesi e generosi. Der Schöne Tag è
quasi un’alternativa a un altro, notissimo film ambientato
a Berlino. Deniz cammina: lungo i corridoi sotterranei
della stazione della metropolitana di Alexanderplatz con
i soffitti bassi e le pareti rivestite di mattonelle turchesi,
su per pendii ombrosi vicino al lago a Grunewald, lungo
gli ampi marciapiedi delle vecchie strade berlinesi.
Attraverso la Tiergarten di sera, illuminata dai fari delle
automobili sulla Strasse des 17 Juni. Il lungo viaggio
attraverso la città porta Deniz dal buio dello studio di

Very few Berlin films worry about the city’s topography,
which either remains unrecognisable or is hacked into picturesque
backdrops. How do we
actually move through the city?
What happens along the way?
The essence of Thomas Arslan’s
films lies just as much in the
encounters and conversations
as in the pauses in between, the
silence and the movement from
one place to another. Deniz
leaves her boyfriend’s apartment
in Kreuzberg. The house
has a narrow staircase and
shared toilets, the heavy wooden
doors typical of old-style buildings,
and dark entrances.
Blinding sunlight shines
through half-opened gates into
the summer city. Summertime
Berlin is not only a description
of a time of year. It is also a different
than wintertime Berlin.
The IBE (International Building Exhibition) buildings on
Kochstrasse, where Deniz lives, play out their irritating
colourfulness, unusually bright and generous. Der Schöne
Tag is almost an alternative to a different, well-known film,
set in Berlin. Deniz walks. Through the long corridors of
Alexanderplatz underground station with its low ceilings and
turquoise wall tiles, up shady lakeside shopes in the
Grunewald, along the wide pavements of old Berlin streets,
through the evening-time Tiergarten illuminated by the headlamps
of cars on the Strasse des 17 Juni. Her long trek through
the city takes Deniz from the dark dubbing studio to the light
casting studio, from a café in Schöneberg to a deserted bathing
lake. This is the playing field on which Der Schöne Tag takes
