JEAN-MARIE STRAUB - DANIÈLE HUILLET
OPERAI, CONTADINI
Con questo nuovo film, ispirato
ancora una volta a un
testo di Vittorini, Straub e
Huillet continuano a confrontarsi
con la storia del nostro
paese, riflettendo su un periodo
centrale come quello del
dopoguerra. Dando corpo,
voce e forza ai personaggi di
Vittorini, il film si struttura
come un oratorio che “canta”
la riuscita “riunione” tra operai
e contadini, tra persone
dal passato molto diverso che
sono riuscite a incontrarsi e a
credere in un progetto comune.
I due uomini-guida si
chiamano, non a caso,
“Fazzoletto Rosso” e “Faccia
Cattiva”: nomi atavici e significativi
di un diverso percorso
politico ed esistenziale (partigiano
il primo, fascista l’altro).
Riusciranno a convivere?
Dopo la guerra, in questo villaggio
della ricostruzione, o
meglio dell’utopia, il cambiamento
sembra possibile. Ma
per quanto ancora? (Maria
Coletti)
“Nel nostro film c’è molto
più movimento di un qualsiasi
film d’azione. In ogni
Bisogna andare controcorrente.
Abbiamo scelto le 39 pagine centrali del testo, in
cui c’è un elemento quasi teatrale e fortemente realistico,
With this new film, which is
also inspired by one of
Vittorini’s texts, Straub and
Huillet continue to confront
our country’s history, reflecting
on a period as crucial as postwar
Italy. Giving body, voice
and strength to Vittorini’s characters,
the film is structured
like an oratory that “celebrates”
the successful “reconciliation”
between workers and farmers,
between people with very different
pasts who have managed to
agree upon and believe in a
common project. The two
guide-men are called, not accidentally,
“Fazzoletto Rosso”
(“Red Scarf”) and “Faccia
Cattiva” (“Nasty Face”). Their
names are atavistic and signify
very difficult political and existential
paths (the first one is a
resistance fighter, the second a
fascist). Will they succeed in
living side by side? After the
war, in this village of reconstruction,
or better yet, of
Utopia, the change seems possible.
But for how much longer?
(Maria Coletti)
“There is much more movement
in our film than in just any
action film. Everything is moving in every frame: not only
their emotions, but also everything that surrounds the characters.
This film must be watched as one would watch a trial.
Twelve people come to testify what they have lived through,
what happened, in a very precise historical moment. And their
testimony is in part memorised and in part read from a script,
to be more precise. They tell a story that is made up of an infinite
number of other small intertwining stories. And this
makes the film somewhat of a mystery. [...] It is very important
to remember the possibility for this Utopia in exactly this
moment, because it is repressed every second at every level of
life by all means possible. We must go against the tide. We
chose 39 main pages of the text, in which there is an almost
theatrical and strikingly realistic element, in contrast to the
