Poco dopo l’arrivo in un piccolo,
grigio sobborgo di
Copenaghen, il neo pastore
Andreas viene convinto a
iscriversi a una scuola serale
di italiano dall’affabile receptionist
del suo albergo. In
classe incontra un’incantevole
ma impacciata commessa
di una pasticceria, Olympia,
che soffre molto per via degli
attacchi verbali del padre.
Olympia capisce presto che il
suo destino è inestricabilmente
legato a quello di
Karen, una timida parrucchiera
con una madre devastata
dall’alcol, di cui lei si
prende cura con una pazienza
confinante con la santità.
Quando la madre di Karen
muore, le due donne scoprono
al funerale di essere sorelle.
Olympia si innamora di
Andreas, mentre Karen inizia
una relazione con Hal-Finn,
un prestante ma arrogante
cameriere.
Italiensk for Begyndere è un film divertente che ogni tanto
mescola dei temi tipicamente bergmaniani che, al contatto
con una visione del mondo mediterranea, conducono a
esilaranti conclusioni, come nella scena dello scambio dei

BIOGRAFIA
Lone Scherfig (Copenaghen, 1959) ha studiato cinema
alla Sorbona di Parigi e quindi all’università di
Copenaghen e alla Danish Film School. Ha diretto pubblicità
e film industriali. Scrive sceneggiature, insegna in
varie scuole cinematografiche e lavora per la radio.

Shortly after his arrival in a
small, grey suburb of
Copenhagen, the new minister
Andreas finds himself being
talked into taking part in an
evening class in Italian by the
affable receptionist at his hotel.
At the evening class he meets a
charming but clumsy pastry
shop assistant, Olympia, who
suffers greatly on account of her
father’s verbal attacks. Olympia
soon realises, however, that her
fate is inextricably bound up
with that of Karen, a shy hairdresser
with a mother ravaged
by alcohol, whom she has been
taking care of with patience that
borders on the saintly. When
Karen’s mother dies, the two
women discover at the funeral
that they are indeed sisters.
Olympia falls in love with
Andreas, whilst Karen begins
an affair with Hal-Finn, a goodlooking
but arrogant waiter.
Italian For Beginners is an
entertaining film that every
once in a while throws in some typically Bergman-esque themes
which lead to hilarious situations when they come into contact
with the film’s vision of Mediterrean culture, like the mix-up

BIOGRAPHY
Lone Scherfig (Copenhagen, 1959) studied film at the Sorbonne
in Paris and later at the University of Copenhagen and the
Danish Film School. He has directed advertisements and
industrial films. He writes screenplays, teaches in several film
schools and works on the radio.
