I cani che abbaiano non
mordono, ma irritano enormemente
il giovane lettore
universitario Yoon-su.
Questi trascorre molto
tempo nel suo appartamento,
in un tranquillo quartiere
di edifici altissimi, in cui
vive con la moglie incinta.
Yoon-su ha tutto il tempo
che gli serve perché il rumore
di sottofondo possa dargli
fastidio. Quando vede
una vecchia signora che esce
per portare a passeggio il
cane, è sicuro che è quello
l’animale che gli dà tanta
noia. Riesce a rapire la
bestia e la rinchiude nello
scantinato del palazzo. A
poca distanza abita Hyunnam,
che lavora come segretaria
della cooperativa edilizia
della zona. Hyun-nam è
in preda a una noia mortale:
nella sua vita non accade
nulla. Quando vede una
ragazzina appendere nel
quartiere un manifesto sul
suo cane scomparso, decide
di aiutarla: attacca manifesti
ovunque, ma nei giorni seguenti spariscono sempre più
cani. Un giorno vede col cannocchiale un uomo trascinare
via un cane da alcuni appartamenti dall’altra parte
della strada.
“L’idea del film viene da un ricordo d’infanzia. Mi
ricordo di un vecchio che viveva con una coppia che
lavorava, e immaginavo che cosa sarebbe successo se
avesse preso e mangiato tutti i cani del vicinato, come
si fa nelle zone rurali. Con Barking Dogs Never Bite
volevo prendere scene di ordinaria quotidianità e realizzare
un film intrigante e interessante. Non volevo
portare alla luce problemi e dolori per esporli crudelmente.
Piuttosto volevo descrivere la vita quotidiana in
modo caldo e attraente, fare un film ‘ricreativo’ usando
la banalità del quotidiano.” (Bong Joon-ho)

Barking dog’s don’t bite, but
they severely irritate the
young university lecturer
Yoon-su. He spends a lot of
time in his apartment, in a
quiet high-rise district, that he
shares with his pregnant wife.
He has plenty of time to allow
the background noise to annoy
him. When Yoon-su sees an old
lady taking a dog for a walk, he
is sure that this is the animal
that annoys him so. He manages
to kidnap the beast and
locks it in the cellar of the
apartment building. Some way
off lives Hyun-nam, who
works as secretary at the local
housing association. Hyun-
Nam is bored stiff. Nothing
happens in her life. When she
sees a little girl in the area putting
up a poster about her
missing dog, she decides to
help. She is sticking up posters
everywhere, but more and
more dogs disappear in the following
days. One day through
her binoculars Yoon-su sees a
man throw a dog from a block
of flats across the road.
“The idea for the film came from a childhood memory. I
remember seeing an old man living with a working couple, and
I imagined what would happen if he caught all the neighborhood
dogs and ate them, as is done in rural areas. With
Barking Dogs Never Bite, I wanted to take ordinary daily
scenes and make an intriguing and interesting film. I didn’t
want to dig up troubles and sorrows to show cruelty in my
film; rather, I wanted to describe everyday life in a warm and
engaging manner, to make a ‘recreational’ film, using the trivia

BIOGRAPHY
Bong Joon-ho (1969) studied at the Korean Academy of Film
Arts, where he made the short pieces White Man (1993) and
Frame in My Memory (1994). His graduation film,
Incoherent (1995), was a cult success. In 1998 he wrote the
