PERSONALE ROMUALD KARMAKAR 1924. Fritz Haarmann, commesso viaggiatore, confessa di aver ucciso e smembrato i corpi di 24 giovani. Il professor Ernst Schultze riceve l’incarico di preparare una relazione psichiatrica che stabilisca la sanità mentale dell’accusato. Ad agosto, in una clinica di Göttingen, hanno inizio le sei settimane di esame. Le conversazioni, stenografate da una segretaria, costituiscono la base del film. I testi sono stati riprodotti nella loro autenticità: tutto il film si svolge nello studio del professor Schultze. In questa indagine dello scatenamento freddo dei sensi in direzione del dolore, in questa anticipazione a posteriori della disumanità nazista (si veda la meticolosità con cui il commerciante Haarmann racconta di aver scomposto e riciclato i corpi delle sue vittime), in questo “kammerspielfilm” sonoro, girato tutto in una stanza, in quel concentrato di parole, emozioni, espressioni del corpo e del viso (del magnifico Götz George), c’è un riflesso del lavoro sull’attore fatto da Cassavetes (anche se qui il testo è molto più scritto della “improvvisazione” del regista americano, essendo costituito dai veri verbali della polizia psichiatrica eseguita su Haarmann dal professor Ernst Schultze). E c’è soprattutto una certa pietà per l’essere umano, che “nonostante tutto” Haarmann continua a essere. Un non allinearsi di Karmakar con la freddezza clinica dell’indagatore-burocrate, che si compie in quella spirale sempre più stretta con cui la macchina da presa gira intorno ai due protagonisti, fino al secco abbraccio finale. Salesman Fritz Haarmann admittes to having killed and dismembered the bodies of 24 young men. Professor Ernst Schultze is commissioned to prepare a psychiatric report determining the soundness of the accused’s mental state. The six-week examination began at a clinic in Göttingen in August. The conversations which were documented in shorthand by a secretary form the basis of the film. The texts have been reproduced authentically. In this inquiry into the outbreak of cold indifference to pain; in this anticipation of the hindsight of Nazi inhumanity (depicted in the salesman Haarmann’s meticulous descriptions of how he dismembered and recycled his victim’s bodies); in this resounding “kammerspielfilm”, shot entirely in one room; in this concentration of words, emotions, facial and bodily expressions (of the magnificent Götz George); there is a reflection of Cassavetes’ work with the actor. (Yet this text is much more written than the American director’s “improvisations”, having been constructed on the verbal truths of the psychiatric police that are exacted on Haarmaan by professor Ernst Schultze.) Above all, however, there is pity for the human being which, “despite everything”, Haarmann continues to be. A non-alignment by Karmakar with the coldness of the investigator-bureaucrat, which is achieved in that ever-narrowing spiral created as the camera encircles the two main characters, up to the final, dry embrace.
