rispondevano a vicenda. Poi abbiamo lasciare cadere l’idea,
Poi ti sei rifugiato nell’Himmler?
fin troppo a lungo.
Berlinale.
have a chorus in which German tourists, GI’s and American
businessmen answered in turn. Then we dropped the idea
after Bodo, who happened to be at Garda Lake and in bed
with the flu, overheard a group of Italians and Germans
singing Polizeistunde kenne wir nicht under his window,
in German, and repeating just that one verse. I asked him if
they were really singing just one verse – if this true or not I
don’t know, and I’ll never know. In any case, he claims that
they were singing just one verse.
Was the same true for Nabucco as well?
Yeah, even Nabucco comes from there, from an extraordinary
observation made by Bodo Kirchoff.
Then you sought refuge in Himmler?
Post-production on Manila was awful, horrible, with the
lighting adjustments, the copies and all the rest, and it lasted
far too long. Then the film was also rejected by the Berlin
Film Festival. However, I wanted to go the Berlinale 2000 at
all costs, so I decided to make another film. On November 27
1999 we shot this Himmler-Projekt. I delivered the film on
January 3, on February 20 it had its premiere. But the controversy
had begun, already from the “Forum”. Christoph
Terhechte told me that no other film had provoked as much
discussion among the selection committee. The majority
wanted to screen the film and a minority…
A “qualified minority”?
…a “qualified minority” wanted to reject it. At that point,
however, it all rested upon the democratic majority, as it
were. In any case, the film was screened on the second to last
day, after all the journalists had already left, and during a
special five-hour session, three hours of which were dedicated
to the film and two to the discussion.
They could just as easily shown the film on the first day; they
could have foreseen an interesting debate. Instead, they
screened it at the end because they wanted to avoid the
debate. What is a festival for then? (Berlin, April 2001)
PERSONALE ROMUALD KARMAKAR
… una “minoranza qualificata” che lo voleva respingere. A
