Kluge e su come vi siete conosciuti?
Io gli avevo mandato un pacchetto con le videocassette del
film su Hitler e di Coup de boule; dopo una settimana lui mi
ha chiamato e mi ha chiesto: “Chi è lei? Da dove viene?
Cosa sta facendo? Cosa intende fare?” Diceva che voleva
assolutamente mandare Coup de boule in televisione. Mi ha
portato con sé alla Arri, dove montavano il suo programma.
Allo stesso modo ha usato anche Gallodrome e il film sui
cani per i suoi programmi. Quando lo chiamo mi risponde
sempre: “Compagno Karmakar, che c’è?” […]
Come sei arrivato al tema dei mercenari?
È andata così: in quanto alleati degli americani, i militari
francesi di stanza in Germania possono fare acquisti dutyfree
ai magazzini PX delle guarnigioni. Lì si trova anche la
rivista “Soldier of Fortune”. In un numero ho trovato la presentazione
di un grande raduno che questa rivista organizza
ogni anno a Las Vegas: la gente si riunisce in un grandissimo
albergo, si tengono seminari e si organizza un’enorme
mostra di armi, alla quale partecipano anche ditte
tedesche. Parallelamente fuori città si svolgono gare di tiro,
dove puoi sparare con ogni genere immaginabile di armi
automatiche. Per partecipare basta pagare la quota. Così mi
è venuta l’idea di andare a filmare questo raduno, per vedere
di cosa si tratta. Sono stato da loro lo scorso agosto,
abbiamo parlato e la cosa gli è andata a genio, poi però non
ho ricevuto i fondi per girare in settembre, ed è slittato
tutto. Questi seminari sono una cosa particolarmente interessante.
Viene ad esempio l’attaché militare dell’ambasciata
del Sudafrica e presenta un “Situation Report: Southern
Africa”. L’ospite d’onore era un membro del Congresso che
si vantava di aver fatto arrivare ai ribelli afghani dei missili
antiaerei tipo “Stinger”, con i quali hanno potuto colpire
i russi, e dal punto di vista militare questo era secondo lui
uno dei motivi per cui i russi si erano ritirati
dall’Afghanistan. C’era un altro seminario che si intitolava
“Duff Matson - The Devil’s Bodyguard”. Questo Duff
Matson è un vecchio, credo un ex berretto verde, che è
morto da poco e che era l’unico superstite della “sporca
dozzina”, quella che ha ispirato il film di Robert Aldrich. lo
avevano invitato a raccontare la sua vita davanti a tutta
quella gente in uniforme. Poi c’erano dei campi per i quali
si trovavano gli annunci su “Soldier of Fortune”. Ho chiamato
e ho raccontato che stavo girando un film su un tedesco
che era stato per 20 anni nella Legione Straniera. Volevo
vedere se in questo modo potevo riuscire a entrare in uno
di questi campi. Il tedesco mi serviva prima di tutto per
dare al film un filo conduttore, poi per avere un legame con
la Germania e infine anche per avere una figura con la
quale poter entrare in scena. Certo quando parli a questa
gente di un film su qualcuno che ha fatto per vent’anni il
legionario, per loro da un punto di vista militare è il massimo
che si possa avere. Per una cosa del genere anche gli
americani diventano tutt’orecchi. A Monaco e ad Amburgo
intanto ho fatto il mio casting, vale a dire che ho messo
about Hitler and Coup de boule. A week later he called me
and asked me: “Who are you? Where do you come from?
What are you doing? What do you want to do?” He said he
absolutely wanted to broadcast Coup de boule on television.
He took me with him to Arri, where they were editing
his programme. He used Gallodrome and the film about the
dogs in the same way. When I call him he always answers,
“What is it Comrade Karmakar?” […]
How did you come to the theme of mercenaries?
This is how it happened: since they are allied with the
Americans, the French military personnel stationed in
Germany can buy duty-free in the garrison’s PX department
stores. There you can also find the magazine “Soldier of
Fortune”. In one issue I saw an ad for a large convention that
this magazine organises every year in Las Vegas. The people
meet in a huge hotel, they hold seminars and they organise an
enormous weapons fair, in which German companies also
take part. At the same time, they hold shooting contests outside
the city, where you can shoot any kind of automatic
weapon imaginable. All you need is to do is pay the entrance
fee to participate. So I got the idea to go and film this convention,
to see what it was about. I went to see them last
August, we talked and the idea appealed to them, but then,
however, I didn’t receive funding in order to be able to film in
September and everything had to be postponed. These seminars
are particularly interesting. The military attaché from
the South African embassy comes, for example, and presents
a “Situation Report: Southern Africa”. The guest of honour
was a member of Congress who boasted about having supplied
the Afghan rebels with anti-aircraft missiles like
“Stinger”, with which they were able to strike the Russians,
and from a military point of view this was one of the reasons
why the Russians pulled out of Afghanistan. There was
another seminar titled “Duff Matson - The Devil’s
Bodyguard”. This Duff Matson was an old man, an ex-Green
Beret I believe, who died recently, and who was the only surviving
member of the “Dirty Dozen” that inspired Robert
Aldrich’s film. They had invited him to tell his life story in
front of all those people in uniform. Then there were the
camps for which you can find advertisements in “Soldier of
Fortune”. I called and told them I was shooting a film about
a German who had been in the Foreign Legion for twenty
years. I wanted to see if in this way I could manage to get
into one of these camps. I needed the German, above all, to
give the film its underlying theme, then to have a connection
with Germany and, finally, in order to have a person with
whom to enter into the scene. Naturally, when you talk to
these people about a film on someone who spent twenty years
in the Foreign Legion, from a military point of view for them
it’s the utmost that one could have. Even the Americans
become all ears over something like this. In the meantime, I
did my casting in Munich and Hamburg, meaning that I
placed announcements saying I was looking for an ex-
Legionnaire or ex-mercenary for a film. This is how I met
Günter Aschenbrenner. Then with this character I dedicated
