Si conosce l’origine del “coup de boule“?
In Germania si chiama “testata” o anche “danese”, dal
gergo marinaresco credo, sembra che la cosa l’abbiano
inventata i marinai danesi. Non ne so molto di più.
In Coup de boule fai vedere che non sei entrato nell’esercito per
fare un film, ma ti ci sei trovato e hai osservato qualcosa di interessante,
che potevi anche filmare. È stato così anche per il successivo,
Gallodrome, anche qui hai trovato il soggetto per caso?
È andata così: nella nostra camerata c’era una rivista porno,
una rivista francese che si chiama “Newlook” e contiene
accanto a immagini pornografiche molto hard anche reportage
fotografici di grande qualità, ad esempio sugli attacchi
dei pescecani, sulle corse dei carri o anche sull‘“uomo più
grande del mondo”, insomma c’è sempre qualcosa che colpisce.
Quella volta c’era un articolo sui combattimenti dei
galli, che mi sono anche ritagliato. In questo reportage, che
è uscito anche su “Geo”, si citava il nome di un piccolo villaggio
che si trova a pochi chilometri da Lille. Quasi tutti in
caserma erano di quelle parti, eppure nessuno ne aveva sentito
parlare. Dopo il congedo ho chiamato al telefono il sindaco
di quel paesino e gli ho chiesto se i combattimenti si
svolgevano ancora, dato che la rivista era dell’83. Lui mi ha
dato un nome e io ho chiamato quel nome. Poco dopo ho
ricevuto un manifesto con le date delle riunioni e nel fine
settimana me ne sono andato laggiù con un operatore e dell’equipaggiamento
cinematografico rubato. Nel pomeriggio
abbiamo ripreso gli incontri di allenamento, il giorno dopo,
domenica, il combattimento vero e proprio. Sono stato il
primo ad avere il permesso di filmare i combattimenti, che
sono chiaramente vietati. Da quelle parti li tollerano come
reliquie culturali, resti di una vecchia tradizione. Soltanto
non li si può pubblicizzare. Comunque abbiamo potuto
riprenderli in maniera del tutto legale, poi nel pomeriggio
seguente siamo tornati a casa. Mille chilometri all’andata,
altri mille al ritorno, girati 30 minuti di pellicola. […]
Quanto può durare un combattimento fra galli?
Il tempo massimo è fissato a sei minuti, poi naturalmente se
uno dei due vince al primo minuto si interrompe. Però può
succedere anche che dopo sei minuti entrambi i contendenti
siano ancora in piedi.
Questo film ha richiesto un gran lavoro di montaggio.

Are the origins of the head-butt known?
In Germany it’s called a head-butt or else a “Danish”, in
sailor lingo I believe. It seems that Danish sailors invented it.
I don’t know much more than that.
In Coup de boule you show that you did not go into the
army to make a film, but that you observed something
interested while you were there, that you could also film.
Was it the same for your next film, Gallodrome, as well?
Did you find that subject by accident?
This is how it went: there was a porn magazine in our barracks,
a French magazine called “Newlook” that carries good
quality photographic reportage, along with the very hard
pornographic images, on, for example, shark attacks, cart
races or on the “Biggest man in the world.” In other words,
there is always something noteworthy. This time there was
an article on cockfighting that I even cut out. In this story,
which came out in “Geo” as well, they cited the name of a
small village just a few kilometres from Lille. Almost everyone
in the camp was from that area, but no one had ever
heard about it. After I was discharged I called the mayor of
that town and asked him if they still held the cockfights, since
the magazine was from ’83. He gave me a name and I called
that name. Shortly afterwards I received a notice with the
dates and over the weekend I went down there with down
there with a cameraman and some stolen film equipment. In
the afternoon we shot the training meetings/sessions and the
next day, Sunday, the actual fights. I was the first to be given
permission to shoot the fights, which are forbidden. They are
tolerated in that area as a cultural relic, the remains of an old
tradition, they just cannot be advertised. In any case, our
filming of them was entirely legal, then in the afternoon we
went home. A thousand kilometres there, a thousand kilometres
back, just to shoot thirty minutes of film. […]
How long can a fight between two roosters last?
The maximum amount of time is set at six minutes but, naturally,
if one of the two wins after the first minute the fight
is interrupted. However, it can happen that even after six
minutes both of the contenders are still on their feet.
This film required a lot of editing.
