Una conversazione con Romuald Karmakar

[…] Più o meno ai tempi della maturità dovrebbe risalire Eine
Freundschaft in Deutschland, il film su Hitler.
La maturità è in estate, prima c’era stato il carnevale, a febbraio.
È stato allora che ho avuto l’idea di andare tutti insieme
alla Lövenbräukeller. Io mi sono mascherato da Hitler,
mi sono coperto la barba e tutti insieme ci siamo ritrovati nel
bel mezzo della sala, che era tutta addobbata per carnevale.
Poi la cosa è rimasta ferma per un po’, solo più tardi ho
cominciato a pensarci seriamente. Nel frattempo ho preso il
diploma. Tra l’estate ’84 e il febbraio ’85 abbiamo girato
diverse parti, nei fine settimana. Il materiale a colori lo
abbiamo girato all’inizio dell’85 e poi lo abbiamo montato.
Quindi le prime riprese sono state quelle di carnevale. Sono nate
già con l’idea di farci un film, oppure era solo un gioco?
Ormai non saprei più come rispondere. Credo che le cose
siano andate così: in aprile insieme agli amici del
Werkstattkino avevamo pensato di comprare una cinepresa,
così ci siamo messi in cinque e abbiamo raccolto 1500 marchi,
che per noi erano una bella cifra. Abbiamo comprato
una cinepresa Braun Nizo Super8 e ci siamo detti: bene,
adesso facciamo il cinema. Io ho fatto il mio film su Hitler e
anche gli altri hanno girato qualcosa; nel marzo ’85 tutto il
materiale è andato in proiezione per dieci giorni al
Werkstattkino. È cominciata così, e io sono l’unico che ancora
si occupa di queste cose.
A quei tempi c’era anche un altro gruppetto che si riuniva attorno
al Werkstattkino. Hai lavorato anche con loro?
No, con loro giocavo a calcio. Ci eravamo incontrati anche
nei circoli punk, nell’82, quando sono arrivato a Monaco.
Con loro però non ho mai lavorato. La sequenza è stata
questa: punk - calcio - cinema.
Niente male come titolo. Per il film su Hitler, che per così dire è
nato nell’arco di un anno, ogni settimana ti trovavi a dover
“mobilitare” gli altri. Non era una cosa complicata?
No, la cosa ci prendeva molto. C’era per esempio Anatol
Nitschke che era tutto fiero di interpretare il miglior amico
di Hitler, e anche quello che faceva Heinrich Hoffmann…
trovavamo fosse una bella cosa, e ci divertivamo tutti. Il
sabato mattina ci si trovava in quattro o cinque e si andava
fino a Berchtesgaden, si girava qualche scena e si rientrava
a casa il sabato pomeriggio. Lo stesso abbiamo fatto durante
la Oktoberfest. Non era difficile motivare i ragazzi.
L’idea di base del film è scritta all’inizio, anche se sulla
videocassetta si legge a stento: “In questo film tutto ciò che

[…] It was more or less during your final school exam
that Eine Freundschaft in Deutschland, the film about
Hitler must have come about.
The exam is in the summer, before it there was Carnival, in
February. That was when I had the idea to work with
Lövenbräukeller. I dressed up as Hitler, I covered up my
beard and we found ourselves together smack dab in the middle
of the hall, which was decorated for Carnival. The film
went nowhere for a while, I only started thinking about it
seriously later. In the meantime, I got my degree. We shot different
parts of it between the summer of ’84 and February of
’85, during the weekends. We shot the colour material in the
beginning of ’85 and edited it later.
So the first shots were filmed during Carnival. Did the
idea to make a film come about then or was it just for
fun?
I couldn’t really tell you at this point. I think it went like
this: in April my friends from the Werkstattkino and I
decided to buy a movie camera, so five of us raised 1,500
marks, which was a considerable sum for us. We bought a
Braun Nizo Super8 camera and said to ourselves: All right,
now we’re going to make movies. I made my film about
Hitler, the others shot something as well. The material was
shown at the Werkstattkino in March of ’85. That’s how it
began, and I am only one still doing these things.
At that time there was also another, smaller group
hanging around the Werkstattkino. Did you work with
them as well?
No, I played football with them. We met on the punk scene,
in ’82, when I got to Munich. I never worked with them,
however. The sequence was the following: punk - football -
cinema.
Not bad as a title. As for the film on Hitler, which was
more or less made over a year, you had to “mobilise”
the others every weekend. Wasn’t that complicated?
No, we were all very taken with the film. For example, there
was Anatol Nitschke, who was very proud to play Hitler’s
best friend, as well as the guy who played Heinrich
Hoffmann… It was a great experience for us, and we all had
a lot of fun. Five or six of us would get together Saturday
morning and go all the way to Berchtesgaden, shoot a scene
or two, then go home in the afternoon. We did the same thing
during Octoberfest. It wasn’t difficult to motivate the group.
