L’azione si svolge poco
prima dell’aprile del 1964,
quando venne deposto il presidente
del Brasile João
Goulart. Marcelo, giornalista
e romanziere, attraversa una
fortissima crisi, vedendo i
suoi amici in carcere. Ha una
relazione con Ada, una giovane
ragazza della ricca borghesia
carioca, sposata con
un industriale. Fra di loro c’è
una vera affinità e sono
entrambi intellettuali e progressisti.
Ma lei non lascerà
mai il marito e i figli. Marcelo
prende coscienza della sua
incapacità di agire, del fatto
che anche il suo amore può
diventare una pura e semplice
evasione, un modo per
non impegnarsi in cause più
serie. Dopo un’ultima discussione
con un vecchio
intellettuale disilluso e fallito,
poesia, musica popolare, soldi ecc. Ci sono anche dei
grandi silenzi… Canzoni commentano l’azione (nuovo
omaggio a Brecht).
The action takes place a little bit
before April 1964, when the
President of Brazil, João
Goulart, was overthrown.
Marcelo, a Journalist and novelist,
goes through a very deep crisis
when he sees his friends in
prison. He has a relationship
with Ada, a young woman from
the rich bourgeoisie who has
married a businessman. There is
a real affinity between them
since they are both intellectuals
and progressives. However, she
will never leave her husband
and children. Marcelo becomes
aware that he is incapable of acting,
and that his love affair
could become a pure and simple
evasive action, a way of not
committing himself in more
serious causes. After his latest
discussion with an old, disillusioned
and failed intellectual,
Marcelo understands that now
is the time to take action.
Highly complex on the philosophical
level, the film is based
on true facts that are never discussed, just as Catholic and
Marxist dogmas are not discussed. The emotional crisis is
spurred by a moral and political crisis that the film does not
explain and leaves dangling from the beginning. The dialogue
is very abstract, very conceptual, even if it is presented in a
very “direct cinema” fashion. Nothing can be done: an intellectual,
even when brushing his teeth, creates literature. There
is a lot of talking in the film, about everything: politics, love,
poetry, pop music, money, etc. There are also long silences…
Songs comment on the action (a new homage to Brecht). The
class struggle explodes into love and the emotional dialectic
becomes dramatic progression. Having to choose between the
woman and social activism, the young intellectual chooses the
latter, incapable of reconciling the two extremes in his life. If on
the one hand he demonstrates an inability to live, as an adolescent,
on the other he sees his responsibilities through to the end
and ends up alone with his pain. More than a modern or contemporary
film, as P. E. Sales Gomes defined it, it is fictional
reportage, like Rome Open City or L’Espoir, and was shot
