Seconda guerra mondiale. Due ragazzi saltano da un treno che trasporta gli ebrei verso i campi di sterminio. Le guardie della Gestapo danno loro la caccia ma i ragazzi riescono a fuggire. Camminano per giorni, quando incontrano una donna che porta il cibo al marito che lavora nei campi. Tirano a sorte chi dovrà andarle a chiedere il cibo e poi ucciderla perché non li tradisca. Il designato ottiene il cibo ma non ha il coraggio di uccidere la donna, che li denuncia. I due sono fatti ancora prigionieri, ma riescono di nuovo a fuggire, sperando di raggiungere la loro casa. Un estetismo molto controllato, quello di Demanty Noci, trappola per critici che si è già sbafato due premi. Su due adolescenti che fuggono davanti all’occupante tedesco, dunque sulla sofferenza umana durante la guerra, il ceco Jan Nemec ha realizzato un esercizio di stile privo di qualsiasi valore umano. I flashback sempre uguali di una Praga sovraesposta, che fanno di questa pellicola di 1 ora e 10 minuti un brutto cortometraggio di 5 minuti ricopiato 15 volte, sembrano trasformarla in un film sulla coscienza dei protagonisti, un Marienbad di Marianské-Lazné. In realtà, tali coscienze sono le coscienze puramente animali di una coppia di idioti che non sanno neanche respirare correndo, si fanno prendere per stupidaggine, cercano solo di appagare i loro rari istinti, hanno due o tre idee, pensieri o ricordi ricorrenti, e la cui idiozia non è mai denunciata: è una cosa naturale o una conseguenza della guerra? Nemec non si è posto il problema, perché il tutto è solo un pretesto per un estetismo muto che risale al cinema centroeuropeo d’anteguerra, dalla fotografia meno elaborata, ma meno brutta. Two young men hop on a train transporting Jews to death camps. The Gestapo guards on board chase them but the two manage to escape. They walk for days until they meet a woman taking food to her husband who is working in the fields. They draw names to see who will ask the woman for food and then kill her so that she will not give them away. The loser gets the food but does not have the courage to kill the woman, who turns them in. The two are imprisoned again but, like before, manage to escape, in the hopes of reaching their homes. The aestheticism of Demanty Noci is very controlled and presents a trap for critics as the film scooped up two prizes. In this film about two adolescents fleeing from the German occupier – and thus a film on human suffering during the war – Czech filmmaker Jan Nemec has created an exercise in style devoid of any human content. The flashbacks of an overexposed Prague – that turn this 1 hour and 10 minute film into an ugly 5 minute short repeated 15 times – seem to transform Demanty Noci into a film about the characters’ consciences, a Marienbad of Marianské-Lazné. Actually, the consciences are purely animal. They are the those of a pair of idiots who do not even know how to breathe correctly; who lose themselves in trivialities; who are only looking to satisfy their rare instincts; who have only two or three recurring ideas, thoughts or memories in their heads; and whose idiocy is never exposed. It this natural or a consequence of war? Nemec does not pose this question because everything here is just pretence for a silent aestheticism that dates back to post-war European cinema, from the less elaborated, and thus less ugly, photography. The film begins with a surprising tracking shot. He gained international success with Demanty noci, but after the Prague demonstrations of 1968 (which he filmed for the documentary Oratorium for Prague) he was unable to work and in the 1970s he emigrated to France and Germany, then the United States. Only after the fall of the Communist regime was he able to return to his country to make films.
