Un ragazzo e una ragazza si
rincorrono per le strade di
Tblisi, intralciati da numerosi
uomini che trasportano
mobili senza sosta. I due si
stabiliscono in un appartamento
cercando un po’ d’intimità.
La comparsa di luce,
acqua e gas è seguita da
quella di un uomo che
istruisce silenziosamente i
giovani sulle norme della
vita privata. Presto la loro
casa viene invasa dai mobili
con il consenso degli abitanti
del palazzo. Non c’è più
spazio per il loro amore,
tutto è custodito dalla presenza
ingombrante di un
lucchetto.
Kruscëv a
quell’epoca aveva già intrapreso una lotta contro l’astrattismo
e il cosmopolitismo. Veniva considerato un
atteggiamento cosmopolita il non raccontare una storia
concreta; era l’opposto del neorealismo. (Da Ioseliani
A young man and woman chase
each other through the streets of
Tbilisi, obstructed by numerous
men moving furniture
ceaselessly. The two move into
an apartment, searching for
some privacy. The arrival of
electricity, water and gas is followed
by the arrival of a man
who silently instructs the
young couple on the rules of
private life. Soon, their place is
overrun by furniture, with the
permission of the building’s
inhabitants. There is no more
space for their love; everything
is guarded over by the cumbersome
presence of a padlock.
The theme of Aprili was very
simple: it was about cutting
down a forest in order to make
furniture with which to overload
an apartment. For a
young couple in which there
was no more space for lightness
and love, there was no
more space for furniture. There
was also, however, the question of padlocks and bolts,
regarding the obsession to lock up all possessions. It was
about a small model of humanity that could not manage to
live, because it was overrun by useless things. Instead of the
trees and the forest, all that remained were stumps… The
symbolism can be interpreted as one wishes, but there was
truly no trace of concrete social criticism in the film. I was
a very young director who did not think at all about politics.
But afterwards I became – as much for the public as for the
authorities – someone who criticised totalitarian society.
This made me laugh, because I only wanted to tell a tragic
fairy tale, about the principle of stupidity that dominates
our life on this earth, in every place. At that time, Kruschev
had already undertaken a fight against abstraction and cosmopolitanism.
It was considered cosmopolitan to not tell a
concrete story; it was the opposite of neorealism. (From
