A joint project
for Ansaldo and ESG:
the Termobarranquilla generator
news
In early January the GT22
generator at Termobarranquilla
Power Plant re-entered service to
the Customer’s complete
satisfaction.
This is one of the first successful
projects completed in the
framework of the co-operation
agreement between Ansaldo
Energia and Swiss company ESG.
Termobarranquilla, owned by
TEBSA, is a combined cycle
power plant with five gas turbines,
two steam turbines and generators
all manufactured by ABB.
One of the reasons for the order
for repair work being awarded to
ESG was its partnership with
Ansaldo Energia, an OEM with
expertise in the same technology
used to produce the
Termobarranquilla generators.
The repair work involved the
removal of the faulty bar and 26
top bars, followed by their
replacement with new ones, which
were reverse engineered by a joint
Italian-Swiss team based at ESG
headquarters in Switzerland and
manufactured by Ansaldo Energia
at its Genoa production site.
Specimens of the removed bars
were shipped from Columbia to
Genoa for comparison purposes
during manufacture, which was
completed extremely rapidly and
to very high quality standards.
Ansaldo also provided site support
by sending specialized personnel,
dedicated tools and materials to
Columbia.
Ansaldo has achieved at least two
important goals with this project:
• it represents the first service
project on generators not
produced by Ansaldo, involving
the manufacture of parts and
components for which no design
parameters or drawings were
available. Once optimised and
standardised, this approach will
allow Ansaldo Energia to
undertake similar projects on its
competitors machines and so
significantly enlarge its potential
service market.
• it represents the first project
carried out to remove and repair
a damaged stator bottom bar on
a generator insulated using
global VPI technology. In
addition to the experience and
knowledge acquired, this
important reference could lead
to the company being awarded
other major work on generators
using this technology.
