Italian Ambassador visits
Cernavoda nuclear
power plant in Romania
news
“The visit gave me the chance to
see at first hand what an excellent
spirit of collaboration there is
between Romanian, Italian and
Canadian operators working on
this major project, requiring the
highest quality standards, to build
a nuclear power plant”, said the
Italian Ambassador Daniele
Mancini at the end of his visit to
the Cernavoda Nuclear Power
Station.
The new Italian Ambassador, who
arrived in Bucharest three months
ago, wished to visit the plant to
underline the importance of the
construction of this high profile
strategic power plant not only for
Romania, but also for Italy.
“The project”, continued the
Italian Ambassador, “represents a
showcase for Italy’s presence in
Romania and a concrete
demonstration of the construction
and management capabilities of
Ansaldo, a benchmark operator in
Italy’s advanced industrial
system”.
The first unit was built and
commissioned in 1996 by a
consortium set up by Ansaldo
Energia and Canadian company
AECL.
For the last ten years, the first
Romanian nuclear power station
(700 MW) built using western
CANDU technology has been
producing about 10% of the
country’s energy requirement.
The load factor at the plant is one
of the highest (about 90%) of any
CANDU unit operating worldwide.
This contribution to Romania’s
energy independence will be
doubled when the second unit at
Cernavoda is synchronised with
the national grid in 2007. About
90 Ansaldo specialists are
working locally on the
construction of the second set,
supervising the complex work
involved in this major project with
our Canadian partner and
representatives of customer
Nuclearelectrica.
Romanian Prime Minister
Tariceanu and the Minister of the
Economy Seres expressed their
appreciation of the work
performed on a joint basis by
Ansaldo and the Italo-Canadian
consortium as a whole.
The Romanian authorities intend
to build a third and, depending on
the cost, a fourth unit at the plant.
The financial strategy will be
defined in coming months.
