and many denominations have a common type of meaning for all or some suits:
1. change;
2. troubles;
3. illness;
4. receipt of money;
5. love;
6. family;
7. conversation;
8. meeting;
9. journey;
10. blow;
11. receipt of a letter;
12. sojourn in some house.
These twelve groups of predicates acquire a more specific meaning in
context; some groups, at least two, seven, eight, and nine, are four variants of
the same meaning. Almost all meanings in group classification are ethically and
aesthetically neutral. Figure cards remain neutral as a rule even in the
substitution of suits; Q♠ is an exception, but only in the absence of her cavalier,
since the auxiliary status of K♠ frees Q♠ from any condemnation or even ethical
suspicion. The groups of predicates one, two, six, seven, eight, nine, eleven,
and twelve are neutral in themselves. Only four and five convey a clearly
positive meaning, while three and ten are negative; due to their uniqueness, as
a rule these groups include only one card, or more rarely two cards. Predicates
of the majority of groups are evaluated only when their suit and value are
specified, as in unpleasant troubles (J♠), amusing troubles (J♦), unpleasant
conversation (8♠), cheerful conversation (8♦). It turns out that the second part of
a card's conventional meaning, its value or denomination, designates, as it
were, the state or action itself, while the first part, its suit, introduces something
qualitative, evaluative, or attributive.
