Roberto Adinolfi, the Managing Director of Ansaldo Nucleare,
was attacked near his home on the morning of
Monday May 7th. Although he was shot in the leg, there
fortunately won’t be any permanent consequences of the attack,
which was subsequently claimed by an anarchic-subversive
terrorist group.
Roberto Adinolfi was visited in hospital immediately after the
attack by many colleagues who wished to learn personally
about his real conditions. Finmeccanica top management representatives
also visited him with a message of solidarity after
meeting Ansaldo Energia and Ansaldo Nucleare managers.
Over the following days, solidarity with Adinolfi and the workforce
of Ansaldo
Nucleare and
Ansaldo Energia
as a whole was expressed
by politicians
across the
spectrum and by
religious, economic
and social
leaders, reaching
its peak with the
demonstration
called on Thursday
May 17th by
Liguria Regional
President Claudio
Burlando, by
the mayor of
Genoa Marta Vincenzi
and by the
extraordinary
commissioner for the Province of Genoa Piero Fossati. The
demonstration was attended by more than three thousand
people in a powerful and unified reaction to all forms of terrorism.
Ansaldo Energia and Ansaldo Nucleare revealed the level of cohesion
between management and workforce in this dramatic
situation, making a strong statement and also respecting the
emotional nature of the episode by continuing their daily work
calmly and vigorously.

APRILIA COMBINED CYCLE
POWER PLANT
La centrale di Aprilia, situata in
provincia di Latina (vicino a
Roma) in Italia è di proprietà
di Sorgenia. La centrale è collocata
in un’area adiacente alla strada Nettunense,
chiamata Campo di Carne,
perché anticamente fu teatro di battaglie
e, non molto tempo fa, il luogo
di alcuni fra i più sanguinosi scontri
della Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
Nel Novembre 2007, Ansaldo Energia
si è aggiudicata il contratto EPC Turano
Lodigiano/Bertonico (Provincia
The Aprilia power plant, situated
in the Province of Latina
(near Rome) in Central Italy, is
owned by Sorgenia S.p.A. The plant
is located in an area adjacent to the
Nettunense road called Campo di
Carne (Meatfield), a theatre of war
since ancient times and more recently
the scene of some of the
bloodiest fighting in World War II.
In November 2007, Ansaldo Energia
was awarded the Bertonico-Turano
Lodigiano EPC contract to build the
power plant (in the province of
Lodi) on a turnkey basis and a Long
Term Service Agreement (LTSA) to
maintain the two gas turbines and
relative generators. In January 2008
the customer awarded Ansaldo Energia
a similar contract for the sister
plant in Aprilia (in the province of
Latina) and work on it began in July
2009.
The power plant comprises a combined
cycle with two gas turbines
and one 2+1 configuration steam
turbine delivering a nominal output
of 800 MW.
The turnkey supply included the design,
supply, installation, start up
and testing of the entire power
plant.
In addition to the main power block
components, the supply also included
the gas station, the thermal
cycle, the auxiliary systems, including
one auxiliary boiler and a water
demineralisation and recover plant
(ZLD), the HV, MV and LV electrical
equipment, including one metalclad
gas insulated switchgear (GIS)
for connection to the Terna substadi
Lodi) per la costruzione della centrale
elettrica “chiavi in mano” e
un Accordo di Assistenza a Lungo
Termine (LTSA) per le attività di service
relative alle turbine a gas e ai
relativi generatori. Nel Gennaio
2008 il Cliente ha assegnato ad Ansaldo
Energia un contratto simile
per la centrale gemella di Aprilia i
cui lavori sono iniziati nel Luglio
2009.
La Centrale elettrica è composta da
un ciclo combinato con due turbine
a gas e una a vapore in configurazione
2+1, che forniscono una potenza
nominale di 800 MW.
La fornitura del tipo “chiavi in
mano” comprendeva la progettazione,
fornitura, installazione, startup
e collaudo dell’intera Centrale.
Oltre i principali componenti dell’isola
di potenza la fornitura comprendeva
anche la stazione gas, il
ciclo termico, i sistemi ausiliari, fra
tion, the plant automation system
(DCS) and the design and realisation
of civil works for the entire
plant.
Third parties commissioned directly
by the customer built the
pipeline to feed the plant with natural
gas and the high voltage electric
substation to connect it to the
national grid.
The distinctive features of the design
are its focus on environmental issues
and excellent operating flexibility,
which are critical success factors
for power producers today, who are
faced with an ever more competitive
market and a society that is increasingly
aware of environmental problems.
A combined cycle solution
plus Ansaldo Energia technology delivers
excellent plant performance
with low atmospheric emission impact.
Le caratteristiche particolari del
progetto sono state l’attenzione alle
tematiche ambientali e l’eccellente
flessibilità operativa, che sono oggi
fattori di successo fondamentali
per i produttori di energia elettrica.
I produttori devono infatti affrontare
un mercato sempre più competitivo
e una società sempre più
consapevole delle problematiche
ambientali. La soluzione a ciclo
combinato, unita alla tecnologia
Ansaldo Energia, offre eccellenti
successfully tested in other power
plants and the base load efficiency
measured during testing was approximately
57%, with CO and NOx
emissions much lower than
30 mg/Nm 3 . The results
of plant efficiency
tests at
equally satisfactory.
T h e
management
of water
resources
was also a key focus
and the plant has a Zero Liquid
Discharge (ZLD) water treatment
system that reduces the input of
process water from wells, as well as
a powerful air condenser used to
condense the steam without resorting
to external water resources for
cooling.
prestazioni con ridotte emissioni
atmosferiche. La turbina a gas
AE94.3A di classe 4, dotata di bruciatori
VeLoNOx, è stata collaudata
con successo in altre centrali e l’efficienza
a carico di base, misurata
durante il collaudo, era attorno al
57%, con emissioni CO e NOx molto
inferiori a 30 mg/Nm3. I risultati
dei test di efficienza della centrale
a carico parziale sono stati ugualmente
soddisfacenti. Anche la gestione
delle risorse d’acqua è stata
al centro dell’attenzione e la centrale
è dotata di un impianto di trattamento
delle acque senza scarichi liquidi
(Zero Liquid Discharge – ZLD),
isolano dai rumori e li assorbono. I
pannelli sono una delle principali
caratteristiche visive della centrale,
The design meets specific architectural
requirements to ensure environmental
and landscape integration
in such a way as to reduce
visual and acoustic impact. The
buildings are clad in panels that insulate
from and absorb sound, as
well as representing one of the
main visual features of the plant,
along with the brick red colour
used for various plant sections. So
far as power generation is concerned,
the plant has been designed
to meet the voltage and frequency
regulation requirements of
the Italian transmission network as
stipulated by Terna (the Italian National
Grid operator), while on a
functional level the plant has been
designed to deliver maximum operating
flexibility in accordance
with legal atmospheric pollutant
emission criteria. The customer can
vary load on a daily basis in peak
hours and during the weekend.
Rapid plant start up allows the customer
to begin generating power
quickly, as well as to operate with
different plant configurations and
variable loads, providing a rapid
and flexible response to network
demand.
The project was given “Notice to
Proceed” by the customer in July
2009 and civil works began in August
2009. A constant focus on the
real needs of the customer and the
climate of proactive collaboration
established, together with technical
expertise and careful planning
and monitoring of work, have
made it possible to achieve the

insieme al colore rosso mattone
usato in varie sezioni della struttura.
Per quanto riguarda la generazione
di elettricità, la centrale è stata progettata
per essere conforme ai requisiti
di regolazione della tensione
e della frequenza della rete di trasmissione
italiana, come stipulato
da Terna (l’operatore della Rete Nazionale
Italiana), mentre a livello
funzionale, la centrale è stata progettata
per fornire la massima flessibilità
operativa, in conformità con
i criteri legali di emissione in atmosfera
delle sostanze inquinanti.
Il cliente può variare il carico quotidianamente,
nelle ore di punta e
durante il fine settimana. Lo startup
rapido della centrale permette al
cliente di iniziare a generare velocemente
elettricità, oltre che operare
con configurazioni diverse e carichi
variabili, fornendo una risposta rapida
e flessibile alla domanda della
rete.
Il progetto ha ricevuto l’autorizzazione
a procedere del cliente nel luglio
2009 e le opere civili sono iniziate
nell’agosto 2009. La costante
attenzione alle esigenze reali del
cliente, il clima di fattiva collaborazione
che si è creato, insieme all’esperienza
tecnica e all’accurata
programmazione e monitoraggio
dei lavori, hanno permesso di raggiungere
gli obiettivi generali del
progetto e, specificamente, la consegna
della centrale (PAC emesso
dal cliente Sorgenia) in soli 31 mesi
dall’NTP, nonostante varie problematiche,
in anticipo di quasi due
mesi sulla data contrattuale. I lavori
general project objectives and,
specifically, plant delivery (PAC issued
by customer Sorgenia) in just
31 months from the NTP, or almost
two months ahead of the contract
deadline, despite a series of problems.
Site work (civil works,
electromechanical assembly, start-
in loco (opere civili, assemblaggio
elettromeccanico, attività di startup
e test) hanno comportato l’impegno
di oltre 1.200 persone nei periodi
di massima attività e sono
stati eseguiti in modo da assicurare
la salute e sicurezza dei dipendenti
della centrale, delle società associate
e dei sub-appaltatori presenti sul
luogo, (zero infortuni sul lavoro).
Con la consegna definitiva della
manutenzione ordinaria sulle 2 serie
di turbine a gas, allo scopo di mantenere
i valori di prestazione con il
minimo deterioramento e un’elevata
disponibilità dei generatori
per l’intera durata del contratto.
L’accordo riguarda anche la registrazione
dei parametri operativi e
il monitoraggio remoto 24/7 dalla
sala di controllo diagnostica situata
nella sede produttiva di Ansaldo
Energia a Genova.
up activities and testing) involved
more than 200 people on site in
peak periods and was performed in
such a way as to ensure the health
and safety of both its own workers,
and those of associated companies
and sub-contractors working on
site (zero accidents in the workplace).
With the final hand-over of the
plant to the customer in February
2012, the Long Term Service Agreement
covering maintenance came
into effect. Under the terms of this
over an area of 150,000 square metres and consists
of two turbines fired by natural gas and a
steam turbine.
The plant is equipped with a high voltage power
transmission line 1.6 km long and a 6 km gas
e circa 30 aziende, provenienti per circa
la metà dal territorio lodigiano. Pur essendo
caratterizzato da una elevata automazione,
oggi l’impianto dà lavoro a circa 50 persone
Protezione dell’Ambiente (Arpa). La società
in the fuel into electricity, is over 57%, compared
to around 40% for traditional thermoelectric
plants, while carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide
emissions are 30% and 70% lower respectively. The
company has also undertaken to reduce nitrogen
oxide emissions by a further 15% and carbon
monoxide emissions by 90% compared to the authorized
limits and the amount of water used by
70%. Sorgenia has supplied a system to monitor the
air quality in the areas bordering on the power
Il nuovo impianto consente a Sorgenia di
avvicinarsi all’obiettivo di produrre in autonomia
tutta l’energia venduta ai clienti
finali. Con la centrale di Bertonico-Turano
Lodigiano, la capacità installata di Sorgenia
ha superato i 5.000 Megawatt. Si tratta della
terza centrale a ciclo combinato progettata e
L’avvio
della marcia commerciale è previsto entro la
fine del primo semestre del 2012.
thanks to the new Bertonico-Turano Lodigiano
plant, in 2011 the combined cycle plants built by
Sorgenia recorded 30.8% less carbon dioxide emissions
than the national average for thermoelectric
production (386 grams per kilowatt hour compared
to an average of 557 grams per kilowatt hour,
according to Terna figures).
The new plant moves Sorgenia closer to its objective
of independently producing all the electricity
it sells to its end-user clients. The Bertonico-
Turano Lodigiano plant increases Sorgenia’s
installed capacity to over 5,000 Megawatts and is
the third combined cycle plant designed and
built by the company.
At the beginning of 2012, the construction was
also completed of the fourth plant in the company’s
development plan, which is located in the
town of Aprilia (Latina). This plant is scheduled
to start commercial operation by the end of the
first half of 2012.

The gas turbine uses an advanced technology combustion system
(DNL-Dry Low NOx type, known as “VeLoNox”) which
enables the customer to operate at minimal power generation
levels in cases of low or no demand for electricity from the
grid. This ensures that legal atmospheric emission limits are
respected, with significant economic benefits for the customer,
and the participation in voltage and frequency regulation
pursuant to the requirements of Elia, the operator of the
Belgian national grid.
The two vessel type steam turbine with three pressure levels
features a low pressure section
based on the use of a 48” steel
discharge bucket. It is the first
application of this new design,
which has been developed in
the framework of cooperation
In March 2011, the order for the turnkey construction
of the 6th October power plant was
awarded to Ansaldo Energia as EPC contractor
by CEPC (Cairo Electricity Production Company),
a subsidiary of Egyptian electric power operator
EEHC (Egyptian Electricity Holding Company).
It was the first contract signed by the new government
in Egypt.
The EPC contract worth Euro 245 million involves
the design and construction of a turnkey open
cycle power plant rated 600 MW at the site
known as “6th October”, located on the outskirts
of Cairo where the highway to Alexandria begins.
The open cycle power plant comprises four units
stato assegnato a marzo 2011 a Ansaldo
Energia, quale EPC contractor, da CEPC,
Cairo Electricity production company, società
di EEHC, Egyptian Electricity Holding Company,
operatore elettrico egiziano, ed è stato
il primo contratto siglato dal Nuovo Corso
in Egitto.
periferia del Cairo all’inizio dell’Autostrada
per Alessandria. La centrale a ciclo aperto è
composta da quattro unità equipaggiate da
turbine a gas modello AE94.2 con i relativi
alternatori e sistemi ausiliari.
The project is one result of the Egyptian Energy
Ministry’s decision to commission additional
power plants as a matter of urgency to remedy
the electric power deficit which in summer 2010
caused a crisis in the country’s electric power distribution
system. The so-called fast track project
was scheduled for completion in a very demanding
14.5 months and follows on from the two previous
El Shabab and Damietta plants awarded in
October 2010.
Engineering, supply orders and subsequent delivery
represented the critical points for project
start up and rapid development. The work site
was opened early in April 2011. Egyptian contractor
ORASCOM performed the civil works for the
various buildings, making it possible for mechanical
and electrical assembly workers to access
the site at predefined deadlines under the
close supervision of the Ansaldo Energia work
site team. Good transportation and customs procedure
efficiency should also be mentioned,
which allowed the construction and erection
schedule to be respected.
Work site activities – from civil works to electromechanical
erection, and from start up to testing
– required a peak of about two thousand people
on site during the busiest period from October
to December 2011, and were carried out in such a
way as to guarantee the utmost worker safety, under
the close supervision of the various safety entities
involved. In confirmation of this, the customer
presented Ansaldo Energia with a
certificate recognising seven million hours of
work without an accident in May 2012.
One year after the start of the project, between
April 8th and 19th, the four gas turbines were synchronised
with the grid for the first time, followed
in May by successful performance tests on
the new 600 MW power plant.
Also worthy of mention is the recognition by the
Authorities and the Client of the important effort
made by Ansaldo Energia to complete the
ore senza incidenti a maggio 2012.
start up of all units according to the contract
schedule, contributing 600 MW during the summer
to satisfy increasing demand, also in a period
of profound change for the country, which
has already elected a new Parliament and will
shortly choose a new President (by the end of
June 2012).
This success confirms that Ansaldo Energia is a
leading player in the power production sector
and can satisfy increasingly taxing plant delivery
demands in today’s EPC fast track project market.
The good results achieved by Ansaldo Energia,
initially with the El Atf and Sidi Krir plants and
subsequently with the 6th October project, have
consolidated EEHC’s confidence in our company,
which at the end of 2011 was awarded two more
steam turbine supply contracts for the Giza
North and Bahna power plants, which form part
of the development projects launched by Egypt,
involving an increase in installed power by at
least 2000 MW/year.

major inspection
I lavori
saranno completati nel mese di giugno.
In November 2011, Ansaldo Thomassen was awarded a multi-million euro
order by Finnish company Lahti Energia Oy to provide various service activities
for their GE Frame 6B gas turbine, including a Brush Generator.
The scope of work consisted of an extensive major overhaul of the gas turbine,
including the replacement of the IGVs, compressor blades and rotor
blades. It also included a major overhaul of the generator and rotor. The
Frame 6B rotor was repaired during the major inspection. Furthermore, as
part of the scope of supply, Ansaldo Thomassen provided the nozzles and
shrouds for all three stages and the second and third stage buckets. The
gas turbine’s dual fuel combustion system components were also repaired,
modified to gas only and upgraded with Ansaldo Thomassen’s lifetime extension
known as ThomELT. The delivery and installation of a new exhaust
plenum and new gas turbine / generator control systems are part of the
scheduled activities. The complete scope will be finalized in June.
projects on Frame 6B and Frame 9E DLN combustion liner sets.
Two Frame 6B DLN combustion liner sets have been repaired for Rural
Power Company. After inspection, these liners were declared to be at the
end of their life. By applying sectional replacement, the customer is able
to use the DLN combustion liners for another six years, which translates
into a huge cost saving. Three Frame 9E DLN combustion liner sets were
also repaired for Israel Electric Company. The secondary zone of all liners
was affected by bulging, which appears frequently in this section of the
combustion liner when a gas turbine runs on liquid fuel.

La presenza di Ansaldo Energia
nel campo della geotermia si
è arricchita di una nuova significativa
esperienza. Dopo alcuni
anni nei quali l’attività è proseguita
solo nell’ambito del service
con la fornitura di importanti
parti di ricambio, nel 2010 Enel
Green Power ha assegnato a Ansaldo
Energia l’ordine per la fornitura
di tre nuovi gruppi (turbine a
vapore e relativi alternatori) da 20
MW destinati a sostituire tre unità
di pari potenza ormai giunte alla
fine della
vita utile. A
questo si è successivamente
aggiunta un’estensione
d’ordine per altre tre unità,
per un totale di sei macchine.
Ansaldo Energia has recently
gained significant new experience
in the geothermal sector.
After several years spent working
exclusively in the service segment,
with supplies of key spare parts, in
2010 Enel Green Power awarded
Ansaldo Energia the order to supply
three new 20 MW generating sets
(steam turbines and the relative
alternators) or a total of six
machines.
The first unit, installed at Rancia in
the Larderello-Radicondoli area,
was successfully connected to the
national grid on May 16th and the
unit is currently operating at
full load.
The order
received is particularly
significant as it marks the
return of Ansaldo Energia to the
domestic geothermal market,
where it has been working for a century,
at a time when the use of
è stato effettuato
con successo il 16 maggio e
l’unità sta attualmente funzionando
L’ordine ricevuto è particolarmente
significativo in quanto segna
il ritorno di Ansaldo Energia
sul mercato geotermico nazionale,
nel quale è presente da un secolo,
in un momento in cui l’utilizzo
delle energie rinnovabili assume
un ruolo di sempre maggior rilievo.
Le nuove unità sono caratterizzate
da un progetto che, pur capitalizzando
l’esperienza precedentemente
fatta sui gruppi di prima e
seconda generazione, risalenti rispettivamente
agli inizi degli anni
’80 e ’90, ed essendo basato sulla
stessa impostazione di principio,
da parte del
Cliente, molto qualificato
e particolarmente attento
alle problematiche di
Tra questi si segnalano l’utilizzo di
una pala di scarico di maggiori dimensioni
The design of the new units, while
the early 1980s and 1990s respectively)
and using the same basic
layout, introduces several new
design elements devised as a result
of operating experience in the particularly
aggressive geothermal
of various requests made by
this highly qualified customer
which regards operating issues as
extremely important.
These requests include: the use of a
bigger discharge bucket than in the
original units; the adoption of special
technical solutions for
improved resistance to the erosive
action of the endogenous fluid and
to prevent the formation of
deposits, some of which are covered
by Ansaldo Energia patents; as well
as the broad-based use of materials
which are different from those normally
adopted in conventional
turbines, in order to offer the maximum
possible resistance to
corrosion.

Il progetto della macchina è stato
l’ingombro delle unità preesistenti
caratteristica fondamentale
richiesta dal Cliente ed indispensabile
per poter permettere la sostituzione
delle unità esistenti con
per l’esercente una mancata
fundamental request for the customer
and indispensable to allow
the existing units to be replaced
L’Argentina
programma di mantenimento
e potenziamento delle centrali
nucleari che ha in funzione, per accrescere
le proprie competenze tecnologiche
e per avere una diversificazione
delle fonti energetiche.
L’Argentina ha attualmente due
centrali nucleari in funzione, Embalse
e Atucha. Embalse è una centrale
Candu 6, di tecnologia canadese,
di circa 650 MW elettrici, funzionante
ad uranio naturale, raffreddata
e moderata ad acqua pesante.
Atucha è una centrale pressurizzata
ad acqua pesante, di tecnologia
tedesca, di circa 360 MW
elettrici, funzionante ad una miscela
di uranio naturale e uranio
leggermente arricchito, raffreddata
e moderata ad acqua pesante.
Con la politica energetica attualmente
in vigore, il governo argentino
ha deciso di continuare a sviluppare
il programma nucleare nazionale
finanziando la costruzione
della seconda unità ad Atucha e decidendo
di estendere la vita operativa
di Embalse aumentandone inoltre
la capacità.
La centrale nucleare di Embalse, secondo
i criteri di progettazione in
base ai quali è stata costruita, completerà
il suo funzionamento normale
alla fine del 2013 e dal quel
momento inizierà un programma
di aggiornamento e riqualifica per
sostenere altri venticinque anni di
funzionamento in condizioni sicure
Argentina recently decided to continue its
programme to maintain and repower the
country’s in service nuclear power plants,
to improve technical skills and to diversify energy
sources.
At the present time Argentina has two nuclear
power plants in operation, Embalse and Atucha.
Embalse is a Candu 6 plant based on Canadian
technology, rated about 650 MW, which uses natural
uranium as fuel and is cooled and moderated
by heavy water. Atucha is a pressurised plant
cooled by heavy water, based on German technology
and rated about 360 MW, which uses a mixture
of natural uranium and slightly enriched
uranium as fuel and is cooled and moderated by
heavy water.
With the energy policy currently in place, the Argentine
government has decided to continue to
develop the country’s nuclear programme and to
finance the construction of a second unit at
Atucha, as well as to extend the operating life of
Embalse and increase its capacity.
Based on the design criteria applied to its construction,
the Embalse nuclear plant will complete
its normal period of operation at the end of
2013, at which point an upgrade and refurbishment
programme will be introduced to support
twenty five more years of safe and stable operation
in terms of both security and production. To
altri contratti su temi qualificanti quali i generatori diesel
point of view, it was decided to repower
the plant from the current 650 MW to about 680
Against this backdrop, Ansaldo Nucleare and
Ansaldo Energia have been awarded a contract
worth Euro 105 million by the plant’s operator,
Nucleoeléctrica Argentina Sociedad Anonima
(NA-SA), to perform all the equipment and system
modifications required to obtain the requested
power rating. The turnkey project involves
work on the turbine set, electric generator
and thermal cycle in order to increase the global
efficiency of the plant and generate more electric
power with a small increase in nuclear power. The
contract involves both manufacturing and system
engineering work. The manufacturing work,
mainly to build turbine and generator set components,
will be performed by Ansaldo Energia,
while systems engineering will be the responsibility
of Ansaldo Nucleare.
The contract, which forms part of a broader lifetime
extension project for the Embalse nuclear
power plant, involves the original designer, Canadian
company Candu Energy, which has been
charged with modernising and redeveloping the
nuclear section of the plant and the safety systems.
Also involved in the project, in addition to
Ansaldo Nucleare and Ansaldo Energia as the
original designers of the conventional section of
the plant, are the local Argentine companies
which have become points of reference in the
country’s nuclear industry panorama and which
can develop local technological skills and drive
economic and production growth in Argentina.
Ansaldo Energia and Ansaldo Nucleare are also
expected to be awarded contracts for the diesel
generators that ensure the operation of the
plant’s safety functions, the electrical systems
The contract involves engineering, component
and equipment procurement, on site construction
and erection, and the final commissioning
of the plant’s conventional machinery. The aim
of engineering work is to develop improvements
that guarantee functionality and productivity,
from concept to detailed and construction planning,
for the turbine set and electric generator
and for the heat cycle systems connected to them
(condensate extraction water, feed water, turbine
bleeding, thermal cycle preheaters and
drainage). Modification work on these systems
will improve component performance, operation
and safety. Construction work will be performed
by local personnel organised under the
supervision of Ansaldo Energia and Ansaldo Nucleare,
as will the entire process of verification
and start up, in addition to assistance restarting
the plant after the long outage required to perform
the modernisation work.
The industrial challenge entails an initial engineering
and procurement phase lasting about a
year and a half, culminating in large-scale modernisation
work on the entire plant from the end
of 2013 to mid 2015: an opportunity to demonstrate
that synergy between Italian technological
excellence and Argentine production resources
can deliver competitive industrial results in the
Cenni storici
La storia di questa parte del laboratorio
materiali di Ansaldo Energia
risale a oltre 25 anni fa, quando Ansaldo
era fortemente coinvolta nello
sviluppo di tecnologia per i reattori
a fissione nucleare. Era il laboratorio
materiali dell’ex Ansaldo Ricerche,
specializzato nello sviluppo di
processi di coating e di accoppiamento
di materiali eterogenei.
Le aree di ricerca originali sono
state mantenute, specialmente per
le applicazioni della fusione nucleare
(l’unione di “materiali di
protezione” come il tungsteno e di
composti in fibra di carbonio con
leghe al rame a elevata conduttività
termica), ma le attività si sono
gradualmente estese a molti materiali
e applicazioni diverse, che condividono
alcune caratteristiche: il
funzionamento ad alte temperature
in dispositivi per la produzione
di energia elettrica, come turbine
a gas e a vapore; celle a
combustibile, waste-to-energy,
MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT AND
TESTING LABORATORIES
Some History
The history of this part of Ansaldo
Energia’s materials laboratory dates
back to the period more than 25
years ago when Ansaldo was heavily
involved in the development of
technology for nuclear fission reactors.
It was the materials laboratory
of the former Ansaldo Ricerche
throughout its entire lifetime, specializing
in the development of
processes for coatings and joining
heterogeneous materials.
The original fields of research have
been maintained, especially for nuclear
fusion applications (the joining
of “protective materials” like
Tungsten and Carbon Fibre Composites
to high thermal conductivity
Copper alloys), but work has
gradually been extended to many
different materials and applications
which share certain characteristics:
high temperature operation in devices
for electric power production,
like gas and steam turbines, fuel
cells, waste-to-energy, very high
temperature heat exchangers, heat
recovery from industrial processes
like glass melting, etc.
Coatings and joining development
left the leading role to high temperature
characterisation of materials,
like oxidation in air and steam, thermal
shock, microstructure evolution
and corrosion in various environments
(gas, coal, municipal waste
and heavy fuel oil combustion).
In recent years the Laboratory has
sione in vari ambienti (gas, carbone,
rifiuti urbani e combustione
di olio pesante).
Recentemente, il Laboratorio si è
specializzato nei test “ambientali”
sui materiali ad alta temperatura
e nei modelli di degrado dei materiali,
anche grazie allo sviluppo di
nuove tecniche di caratterizzazione
e analisi metallografica.
Test “ambientali” per alte
temperature
I materiali ad alta temperatura
che si utilizzano nei dispositivi
per la produzione dell’energia
elettrica, con un particolare accento
sulle turbine a gas, vengono
testati per capirne il comportamento
“ambientale”, ossia i fenomeni
di ossidazione ad alta temperatura
( sia in condizioni
statiche che cicliche), la corrosione
in presenza di flussi di gas
che simulano la composizione dei
prodotti di combustione e la presenza
di depositi corrosivi previsti
sui componenti reali, l’evoluzione
della microstruttura e la resistenza
allo choc termico.
Vengono esaminati anche i componenti
reali dopo l’esercizio attraverso
metallografia distruttiva
specialized in high temperature materials
environmental testing as well
as in material degradation models,
also through the development of
new characterization and metallographic
analysis techniques.
High temperature environmental
tests
High temperature materials for use
in a variety of electric power production
machinery, with a special focus
on gas turbines, are tested for their
“environmental” behaviour, i.e. oxidation
in static and cyclic temperature
conditions, corrosion in a flowing
atmosphere that simulates
combustion gas composition and
corrosive deposits expected on real
components, microstructure evolution
and thermal shock resistance.
Ex-service real components are examined
too, through both destructive
metallography and NDT techniques,
as well as samples subject to
mechanical testing (creep, TMF, LCF)
performed by other laboratories
within or outside Ansaldo Energia.
cyclic oxidation tests
o, dove possibile, con tecniche
meccanici (deformazione permanente,
TMF, LCF) eseguiti da altri
laboratori all’interno o all’esterno
di AEN.
Forni tubolari per test di corrosione a
caldo e ossidazione ciclica
In questi forni elettrici tubolari
(funzionanti fino a 1200-1500°C),
possono scorrere miscele di gas
per simulare la reale composizione
dei gas di combustione, compreso
il vapore acqueo, e si possono mettere
ceneri sintetiche sui campioni
per simulare i depositi corrosivi.
Sono già stati simulati i gas derivanti
dalla combustione del gas
naturale o di combustibili liquidi
in turbine a gas, di carbone e di legno.
La tendenza recente del funzionamento
delle turbine a gas evidenzia
un tempo maggiore dedicato
al funzionamento ciclico (accensione/spegnimento
anche con ciclo
giornaliero), che sta sostituendo
la condizione di carico di
base standard. I frequenti ciclaggi
cui i componenti, specie le parti
calde, sono sottoposti rendono
quindi particolarmente importanti
i test di ossidazione ciclica
per caratterizzare i materiali, e in
particolare i coating e le barriere
termiche in ceramica.
statica, i laboratori possono
eseguire test sia specifci su
coupon di dimensione limitata sia
più grandi.
to 1,200-1,500°C) to simulate the real
composition of combustion gases,
including water vapour, and synthetic
ashes can be put on the samples
to simulate corrosive deposits.
Gases originating from the combustion
of natural gas, gas turbine liquid
fuels, coal and wood have already
been simulated.
In addition to static temperature
tests, cyclic oxidation tests are very
important to characterise materials,
and coatings and ceramic thermal
barriers in particular, in part because
the recent trend of gas turbine
operation fearures more time
spent in cycling operation (also
daily cycling), which is replacing
the standard base load condition.
The laboratories can test samples
both as small coupons (“buttonlike”)
but also in larger sizes.
Furnaces with a large tubular
shaped chamber (300 mm in diameter,
500 mm long), a maximum operating
temperature of 1,100°C and
a mobile hot chamber are available.
Typical thermal cycles entail 1, 2, 8 or
24 hours at high temperature, followed
by cooling down to 50°C in 4
minutes (if the fan is operated); cycles
can be repeated up to 2,500
times.
Another furnace for cyclic oxidation
tests, with a maximum operating
temperature of 1,150°C, uses 5 independently
moving sample holders
and 1 fixed hot chamber.
The sample holders automatically
move away from the hot chamber to
allow samples to cool down. Typical
thermal cycles are similar to those
Sono infatti disponibili forni con
camera tubolare di grandi dimensioni
(300 mm di diametro, 500 mm
di lunghezza), una temperatura
d’esercizio massima di 1.100 °C e camera
calda mobile. I tipici cicli termici
comprendono 1, 2, 8 o 24 ore
ad alta temperatura, seguite da un
raffreddamento a 50°C in 4 minuti
(se viene attivato il ventilatore); i
cicli si possono ripetere fino a 2.500
volte.
Un altro forno per test di ossidazione
ciclica, con temperatura d’esercizio
massima di 1.150°C, utilizza 5 slitte
porta campioni mobili indipendenti
e una camera calda fissa. I porta
campioni si allontanano automaticamente
dalla camera calda per permettere
ai campioni di raffreddarsi.
I tipici cicli termici sono simili a
quelli descritti sopra, ma sfruttando
i tempi di inserimento/estrazione
dei diversi porta campioni si possono
eseguire contemporaneamente cicli
termici diversi.
Una tipica applicazione è il test dei
rivestimenti a barriera termica, che
described above, but different thermal
cycles can be performed concurrently
in each sample holder.
A typical application is testing thermal
barrier coatings that are cycled
up to the complete detachment of
the barrier.
Using the results both from static
and cyclic oxidation tests, the behaviour
of the coating is studied
and the parameters describing its
life cycle equations are evaluated.
The results provide design data for
the FEM models used for life evaluation
Thermal shock facility “giostrina”
(“miniature merry-go-round”)
Various sample shapes can be
tested, with heating by means of
oxygen-propane torches and cooling
down by compressed air. Controlled
thermal gradients are possible
through disc shaped samples.
Maximum temperature in excess of
1,400°C can be achieved on ceramic
coated samples, with fast heating
and cooling (less than 20 seconds).

e raffreddandoli
con aria compressa ottenendo così
gradienti termici controllati su campioni
tipicamente a forma di disco.
La temperatura massima utilizzata
è di circa 1.400°C, sui campioni rivestiti
in ceramica, con riscaldamento
e raffreddamento veloce (meno di
20 secondi). Si possono aggiungere
dispositivi per iniettare polvere nella
fiamma, per produrre sui campioni
depositi corrosivi che simulino le
effettive condizioni operative osservate
in alcuni componenti fuori servizio,
ad esempio l’attacco da CMAS.
Evoluzione della microstruttura nelle super-leghe
Corrosion of ceramic Thermal Barrier
Coatings due to Vanadium containing
heavy fuel oil
Vanadium contained in heavy fuel
oil produces a very harsh environment
for gas turbine components
and even ceramic coatings can be
degraded. Vanadium penetrates
into the coating through microcracks
and porosities and then reacts
with Yttrium, forming a mixed
oxide (red in the picture); surrounding
partially yttria stabilized zirconia
becomes lacking in yttria and
monoclinic phase (green in picture)
forms instead of the usual tetragonal
one (yellow in picture). Phase
transformation produces an increase
in volume and then coating
cracking.
con gli esami metallografici delle
palette esercite. La misurazione delle
particelle della fase consente di
effettuare stime locali della temperatura
cui la pala è stata sottoposta
durante l’esercizio.
Corrosione dei rivestimenti a barriera termica
in ceramica, dovuta a olio combustibile
pesante contenente vanadio.
Il vanadio contenuto nell’olio combustibile
pesante produce un ambiente
molto sfavorevole per i componenti
della turbina a gas in particolare
per i coating in ceramica. Il
vanadio penetra nel coating attraverso
micro-fenditure e porosità e
reagisce quindi con l’ittrio, formando
un ossido misto (rosso nella foto);
la zirconia circostante, parzialmente
stabilizzata con ittria, diventa carente
di ittrio e si forma una fase
monoclina (verde nella foto) invece
della normale fase tetragonale (gialla
nella foto). La trasformazione di fase
produce un aumento del volume e
quindi la cricca nel coating.
Le super-leghe a base di cobalto non
hanno una fase secondaria caratterizzata
da un’evoluzione microstrutturale
chiaramente visibile. Di conseguenza,
sino ad oggi è stato impossibile
trovare una correlazione
ben definita fra le loro caratteristiche
tale correlazione si sta studiando
una tecnica di analisi che utilizzi le
a ingradimento molto elevato
da FEG-SEM (> di 100000 x). Si
possono osservare le dislocazioni
sotto forma di nervature sulle pareti
della particelle : sulla sinistra è
presente un materiale che è stato
appena esposto ad elevata temperatura,
sulla destra, lo stesso materiale
dopo un test di creep (elevata
temperatura più carico meccanico).
Carbide particles extracted from a
Cobalt base superalloy
Cobalt base superalloys don’t have a
secondary phase that undergoes
clearly visible microstructure evolution.
As a result, until now it has
been impossible to find a well defined
correlation between their microstructure
features and the operating
temperature they had to
withstand. Accurate examination of
carbide particles, extracted from the
alloy through electrolytic dissolution,
is actively pursued in order to
find such a correlation.
by a strong metallographic
can be seen as ribs on the walls
which has just been exposed to
Once again this year, MiCo in Milan hosted the prize-giving ceremony for
long service employees and Maestri del Lavoro, held during Finmeccanica
Day.
With each passing year this event underlines the importance of experience
and professionalism in the Group. And in fact the title “Experience is value”
was given to the event, which played host to colleagues who this year celebrated
forty years of service in the company, as well as to those who were
honoured as Maestri del Lavoro, the title given by the President of the Italian
Republic to employees who have been “an example, an encouragement
and a lesson for others”.
This year the Ansaldo Energia employees to receive awards were Franco
Fioredda, Emilio Gavioli, Giovanni Gozzi, Marco Maineri, Alberto Murgia,
Pier Aldo Nicora, Renato Parodi and Luciano Valerio, together with Maestri
and to Marco Reale for Ansaldo Nucleare.
MARIA GRAZIA CATTANEO has devoted her entire
working life to Ansaldo group management.
She has always represented a distinctive presence
for the company’s top customers, building significant
experience in EPC (Equipment, Procurement
and Construction) contract control activities and
contributing specifically to the realisation of foreign
plants.
During her professional career, she has worked on
top level project teams, contributing effectively to
planning and production control. In 2003 she was
made Project Controller.
Today she represents an extremely valuable resource
for the company and its overseas activities,
with an approach, skills and commitment that
make her a benchmark for senior colleagues and
an untiring tutor for younger employees.
GIOVANNI FERRANDO has always worked in the factories
of Ansaldo group, in its various corporate
transformations over the years.
He continues to stand out today for his attachment
to the company, which is demonstrated not
least by his availability, inventiveness and ability
sperimentale PEC (Progetto Unificato
ingegneristici e gestionali; i reattori a fusione
attività Covra-Habog in Olanda. L’elenco poi potrebbe
continuare.
La sua indiscussa competenza tecnica nel
campo dell’analisi strutturale agli Elementi Finiti
that he trains the people who go on to occupy
positions of responsibility, not only in relation
to technical issues, but also to professional
and moral questions. In 2009, he was officially
recognised for his operational excellence in “critical
and technical operating duties assigned to him.
At the present time he works as a mechanical adjuster
and installer of fixed bucket wheels in the
erection department of Ansaldo Energia’s Genoa
production facility, in a role of great responsibility
and delicacy.
MARCO REALE has spent his entire professional career
in the Ansaldo group.
Over the years he has left his imprint on modeling,
computation and verification activities for the
most complex and innovative components in nuclear
plants, including the PEC experimental plant
(Unified Nuclear Project) for Enel based on Westinghouse
PWR technology; the steam generator
for the Palo Verde plant in the US; the Superphenix
plant in France, a top level international project in
terms of its technological, engineering and management
content; the NET and JET fusion reactors;
and the Covra-Habog storage plant for highly radioactive
waste in The Netherlands. And we could
go on.
His undisputed technical competence in relation
to Finite Element structural analysis and mechanical
point of reference in the company, particularly for
new generations, who receive precise, prompt answers
from him, together with the invitation
“never to forget common engineering sense”. He
al “nuovo” e all’alta tecnologia è testimoniata
con General Electric per turbine a vapore ed alternatori;
Ansaldo Energia
has a storied tradition in development
and innovation, with deep roots
in the cultural and entrepreneurial fabric that produced
the original Ansaldo in Genoa in 1853.
Through two world wars, changes of ownership
and various restructurings, the company has gradually
rationalised its product portfolio, which initially
included trains, cars, ships and submarines,
to create companies with more focused core businesses
like Ansaldo Energia and Ansaldo STS. The
company’s vocation for innovation and advanced
technology is also demonstrated by the main
shareholder Finmeccanica Group, which develops
products and systems for applications in avionics,
space, the military, telecommunications and security,
as well as creating and/or incorporating specialised
companies in these business sectors.
Ansaldo Energia has an installed fleet with an outsiva,
come un mero esecutore, ma ha tratto
sempre spunto dalla sua attività costruttiva
per un’azione propositiva di sviluppo autonomo
dei prodotti e dei processi.
In questa missione, Ansaldo Energia ha tratto
anche vantaggio dalla disponibilità, nelle proprie
aree, di laboratori e impianti di prova altamente
specializzati e quasi sempre all’avanguardia
con i tempi, che hanno sempre goduto
di ridotta visibilità all’esterno perché strettamente
orientati al prodotto e fruiti completamente
dalla produzione.
Competenze e infrastrutture hanno permesso
così di migliorare in modo significativo i diversi
prodotti e di attuare soluzioni mutuate
dalle diverse tecnologie proponendo Ansaldo
Energia come un OEM, “Original Equipment
capace di sviluppare propria tecnologia.

plant in 1923: the 16 MW Pietrafitta generating
set in the Province of Cosenza in southern
Italy.
For many years, Ansaldo Energia licenced the machinery
it produced from leading manufacturers:
General Electric, for steam turbines and alternators,
from after the second world war to the end of
the 1980s, then ABB, also for steam turbines and alternators,
and finally Siemens, for gas turbines,
which was also a competitor on international markets.
Because of its engineering tradition, Ansaldo has
never played the role of passive licensee and simple
executor, but always drawn on the company’s
construction skills to propose independent product
and process developments.
In this mission, Ansaldo Energia has also benefited
Grazie a questi presupposti ed
alla integrazione nell’organizzazione
Ansaldo Thomassen e la svizzera
Ansaldo ESG, nel 2007 ha depositato
il trade mark OSP e si propone
sul mercato come “Original
Ansaldo Energia, ormai tecnologicamente
indipendente da accordi
di licenza, ha inoltre stretto accordi
con università italiane e
straniere, centri di eccellenza internazionali,
clienti e fornitori
partner, garantendosi una catena
forte nello sviluppo che va dalla
concezione a la realizzazione, l’installazione
e l’esercizio.
ways been of limited visibility outside the company
because they are closely linked to the product
and used only for production purposes.
In this way competences and infrastructure have
made it possible to improve products significantly
and introduce solutions that take account of various
technologies, presenting Ansaldo Energia as a
multiple technology OEM (Original Equipment
Manufacturer) that can develop its own technology.
Based on these premises and on the integration of
companies including the Dutch Ansaldo
Thomassen and the Swiss Ansaldo ESG, in 2007 the
company registered the OSP trademark and now
markets itself as an Original Service Provider.
Ansaldo Energia, now technologically independent
of licence agreements, also works with Italian
and international universities, international centres
of excellence and customer and supplier partners,
thus ensuring a strong development chain
that covers everything from concept to production,
installation and operation.
To achieve this target, use is also made of open innovation.
The possibility of strong synergy with other Finmeccanica
companies is also an important factor.
This consolidated corporate approach has made it
possible, with the termination of all licences in
2005 and the technological independence this has
brought, to register a remarkable 184 patents in 7
years.
We report the trend of patents registered by
Ansaldo Energia and its subsidiaries, not least
Ansaldo Nucleare, in the period from 1993 to 2011.
Page 31 reports the breakdown of the aforementioned
patents by product/specialisation.
It is important to underline that these patents are
not just formal exercises that will remain only on
paper to add prestige to the company that registered
them. More than 80% of them are used regularly
in the production both of new components
and for service work.

tecnologia oggi tanto popolare Ansaldo fosse
attiva e competitiva.
1913 sulle turbine a gas sono state messe a disposizione
dalla Fondazione Ansaldo.
This strong growth in patent registrations is due
not only to formal independence from licences,
but also to the greater emphasis given by corporate
management over the last decade to intellectual
property.
But this is not a real novelty, because if we retrace
the long history of Ansaldo, we find that certain
years were particularly important in terms of intellectual
property: 1915 (74 patents, of which 26
extensions) and 1918 (68 patents of which 26 extensions).
The company’s top innovative achievements
were in the first decade of the twentieth
century, with two peaks reached during the first
world war.
We would like to draw your attention to a 1913
patent because it refers to gas turbines. It is surprising
to see how Ansaldo was active and competitive
right from the outset of this technology that
is now so popular.
Pictures show the original documents used to register
the project.
Another interesting fact is that after Ansaldo was
taken over by IRI, in 1935 an electrotechnical workshop
was set up that eventually grew to have a
workforce of three hundred, including seventy engineers.
Still in the area of gas turbines, we would like to remind
you that twenty years after starting production
in 1991, Ansaldo Energia delivered its one hundred
and fiftieth unit, which was not of course
based on that original patent, but represents clear
proof of the company’s ongoing effort to improve
performance, first and foremost in terms of efficiency
and environmental impact, and its own independent
technology.
The historical references in this article are contained in
terza, “Technological Innovations” Chapter, by
patent were kindly provided by the Ansaldo
ANSALDO ENERGIA IS ENERGY
FOR SPORT IN LIGURIA
Ansaldo Energia sostiene da ormai
qualche anno la manifestazione
“Stelle nello Sport”,
che premia le eccellenze dello sport
ligure. Quest’anno, in particolare,
ha puntato sui giovanissimi premiando
i “green”, atleti o atlete di
ogni disciplina e livello con età inferiore
ai 14 anni, con l’augurio che
questo possa contribuire a costruire
una cultura sportiva e di squadra
fin dall’adolescenza.
Lo sport, in tutte le sue innumerevoli
forme, ha trionfato al Porto
Antico nelle tre giornate della Festa
dello Sport.
For several years new Ansaldo
Energia has been offering its
support to the “Stelle in Sport”
[Stars in Sport] event that rewards
sporting excellence in Liguria. This
year, in particular, it focused on the
youngest sports enthusiasts, rewarding
athletes aged under 14 in all
disciplines, in the hope that this
contributes to
building a culture
of sport and team
spirit from an early
age.
Sport, in all its various
forms, triumphed
at the
Porto Antico during
the three-day Festa
dello Sport [Sport
Festival]. All the
events linked to the
“Stelle nello Sport”
project, from the
Gala event and Arena stage, to the
Tendone and all the other land and
water sports, were entered by thousands
of enthusiasts, from beginners
who decided to spend the day
trying out unusual sports, to internationally
successful champions
and stars.
In the Maestrale Auditorium at the
Porto Antico conference centre, a
huge party was organised for the
Stelle nello Sport Gala event at
tecipazione di migliaia di praticanti:
dai neofiti, coloro che per un giorno
hanno deciso di avventurarsi per
scoprire sport non molto conosciuti,
ai campioni, alle Stelle capaci di
firmare i migliori successi in campo
internazionale.
ultimi quattro mesi. In una sala
gremita in ogni ordine di posto, c’è
stata soprattutto l’occasione di lanciare
un forte messaggio benefico
attraverso l’Associazione Gigi Ghirotti
onlus presente con i suoi volontari
per raccogliere fondi per
l’assistenza ai malati terminali.
Il trofeo Ansaldo Energia, consegnato
da Andrea Del Chicca, direttore
Risorse Umane e Organizzazione
della società, è stato aggiudicato
dalle atlete Federica Mazzarello
ed Elisa Bisi. Nelle foto alcuni momenti
della premiazione.
which the athletes voted for by the
public over the last four months
were presented with their awards.
The packed auditorium provided an
opportunity to send a strong charitable
message through the Gigi Ghirotti
no profit Association and its
volunteers, who attended the event
to raise funds to offer assistance to
the terminally ill.
The Ansaldo Energia trophy, presented
by the company’s Human Resources
and Organisation director
Andrea Del Chicca, was awarded to
Federica Mazzarello and Elisa Bisi.
moments of the prize-giving ceremony.
