Margherita I spent my first night out. Incredible being out all night with her. And I didn’t feel cold because she wrapped me in her gaze and she asked me lots of questions as if someone could really care that when I was nine I was still afraid of the dark. I told her things that I’ve never told anyone else because I thought they were insignificant or stupid, but no, I found her smiling and caressing me while I told her about the first time I went into town alone and I took the wrong bus and ended up outside the city. But she was full of ‘You know I did that too, me too, really, incredible’. Incredible spending the whole night out together. We walked without ever stopping and I didn’t notice that time was passing. It seems strange because whenever I can I check the time to know how things stand and to see how much they have moved. Nothing like that happened last night. While my mother and father sat silently in front of the television and my sister talked on the phone with her friends about guys that they’ll never have. While some of my school friends were having a wank thinking about Bonelli, Margherita and I were running through the night until we got to the sea. Me and Margherita Bonelli, the most beautiful girl in school, and not just beautiful. Margherita looked me right in the eyes and told me to take her to the sea, when you hear a sentence like that in a film you think that it can only happen in the movies. But no, because I got my bike and I took her there and we screamed against the waves and the only thing that I could hear was the sound of Margherita which seemed like a song. When you shout against the sea it doesn’t send anything back to you, but tonight I had her and that was enough. Margherita’s scent was like that fragrance laundry has, the one that I like to smell before my mother starts ironing and all at once I needed to have her more and more. E non ho sentito il freddo perché mi teneva stretto con lo sguardo e mi faceva tante domande come se a qualcuno davvero potesse interessare che a nove anni avevo ancora paura del buio. Le ho raccontato delle cose che non ho mai detto a nessuno perché pensavo fossero piccole e stupide e invece no, me la ritrovavo a sorridere e ad accarezzarmi mentre le parlavo di quando sono andato la prima volta in centro da solo e ho sbagliato a prendere l’autobus e sono arrivato fuori città. Ma lei era piena di Sai anch’io, pure io, ma dai, incredibile. Incredibile: tutta la notte fuori insieme. Abbiamo camminato senza fermarci mai e non mi sono accorto del tempo che passava, mi fa strano perché io appena posso controllo l’ora per sapere come stanno le cose e di quanto si sono spostate. Niente di tutto questo ieri sera. Mentre mia madre e mio padre se ne stavano zitti davanti alla televisione e mia sorella parlava al telefono con qualche sua amica dei ragazzi che non avranno mai. Mentre qualche mio compagno di classe si faceva una sega pensando alla Bonelli, io e Margherita correvamo nella notte fino ad arrivare al mare. Io e Margherita Bonelli, la ragazza più bella della scuola, e non solo bella. Margherita mi ha guardato dritto negli occhi e mi ha detto portami al mare, quando una frase così la senti nei film pensi che non c’è altro modo che al cinema. Invece no perché io ho preso la bici e ce l’ho portata e abbiamo urlato contro le onde e l’unica cosa che ho sentito è che il suono di Margherita mi è sembrato una canzone. Il mare quando gli urli contro non ti fa tornare niente indietro, ma io stanotte ho avuto lei e mi è bastato. Margherita profumava come quell’odore di bucato che mi piace annusare prima che la mamma cominci a stirare e tutto ad un tratto ho avuto bisogno di averla sempre di più e sempre di più. Fire Il fuoco My parents have been running a restaurant in Regensburg for over 20 years. It demands a lot of time and commitment. Because of this as a child, my parents’ only child, I often had to look after myself. Fortunately our home was directly above the restaurant and had a two-way intercom which kept me permanently in touch with my parents. One evening I was sitting in the living room watching “Tom and Jerry” when the breakfast table by the window suddenly caught on fire. I thought my parents had lit a campfire to make the living room cozy. I was pleased that they cared for me even if they were away. So I continued to sit in front of the television while flames were licking high up the curtains. However, by the time the fire climbed up to the ceiling I thought it was time to ask my mother whether it was not better if the fire was kept under control. Però quando il fuoco montò fino a toccare il soffitto, pensai che fosse giunto il momento di chiedere a mia madre se non fosse il caso di controllarlo.
