Dear Brothers, At the conclusion of the Pauline Vocation Year, I am happy to be able to offer for your consideration the Compendium of the main teachings of Blessed James Alberione on vocation. Prepared by the Pauline Spirituality Centre on the request of the General Government, it presents significant writings of the Founder, proposing in the first three chapters a well coordinated vision of Alberionian thoughts, gathered from the formative experience directed by the "Signor teologo" (Blessed Giaccardo) (according to some witnesses) for reflection on vocation, as indications regarding research and formation of vocations, on the repeated insistence to make oneself responsible for the problem of vocations. A forth chapter, proposing in parallel to the writings of the Founder with some of the recent Church documents (Consecrated Life, New Vocations for a New Europe) highlights the permanent validity and the current situation. A book, hence, to read and to meditate from the part of all and therefore no one can make himself a stranger to the problem of vocations or reserve it to those who are involved in this work. On this Alberione is very categorical: “To put everything in action: forming the conviction that the problem of vocation is basic and is taking place: reminding the obligation of all to a solution”. A book, besides, questions everyone on his own style of pauline life, if true, as the Founder says the first means consists in putting in order our life in the house according to the true religious spirit. To a greater reason, to those who work directly in the vocation pastoral and in the formation, the Compendium (whose translation is already in progress into English and Spanish) offers timely service, even if not exhaustive, on the Alberionian theme of vocation: it reveals as a precious fountain which attracts; it characterises as a manual which can be easily referred to. 2
The personal and communitarian commitment in the field of vocation is a sign of “love for the Church, for the Institute, for souls” and follows, in obedience to the Founder, the finality of working with other as a “Society of souls... that offer themselves to work for the Church, being happy for the divine remuneration”. I place these pages in your hands at the conclusion of the Vocation Year. They can provide new guidelines and vitality to a theme, that is Vocation, that can make us aware of the poverty of our present, while the horizons are wide which confronts us.
